ISLAMIC FINANCE REVIEW: AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH PROF. DWIA ARIES TINA PULUBUHU

The Islamic Finance Review (ISFIRE) is the official publication of the Islamic Bankers Association (IBA) and the recently concluded Global Islamic Fintech Summit 2018. ISFIRE disseminates information on current issues in Islamic banking and finance industry, highlighting the achievements and success stories of leading institutions and individuals in Islamic banking and finance. On its August 2018 issue, Hasanuddin University Rector, Prof. Dwia Aries Tina Pulubuhu, was exclusively interviewed to share her experiences as the leader of the leading university in Eastern Indonesia.

Being among the youngest of her peers, Prof. Dwia shared the complexities associated in running a complex organization like a university. Prof. Dwia elaborated how the university has undergone great heights in attaining the international recognition it holds in the present time.

Having entered the Asian University Rankings, she stated that leading the university becoming a World Class University is one of the critical priorities of her leadership terms. As a state-owned university, the complexities of leading Hasanudidn University is also based on the fact that out of the 130 state-owned universities in Indonesia, only 11 (including Hasanuddin University) have been granted legal status of an autonomous university. Faculty of Economics and Business UniversitasHasanuddin (FEB Unhas) and Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy National University of Singapore (LKY) held an event: Survey and Discussion on the Com-petitiveness of South Sulawesi Regions in 2018. The event was held at the GDLN Room 3rd Floor, FEB Unhas on September, 6th 2018. The event was opened by a discussion and public lecture regarding the competitiveness of South Sulawesi Regions by Nursyahida Ahmad, Dr. Zhang Xuyao from LKY School of Public Policy.

Hasanuddin University recently facilitated a conference on Shari’a-based economic and financial services, which heavily influenced the reputation of Hasanudidn University in advancing scientific developments on Islamic economics and finance.

Conference on Islamic Economic and Finance hosted by Hasanuddin University, exposed the potentials of a Shari’a-based economy in Indonesia.

She is determined and encouraged to further research the scientific development of Islamic economics and finance, as this can be the basis for innovative forms of economic and financial services for a country that consists of 90% Muslims. She further stated that the development of digital-based information technology has the potential to further spur the outreach of Islamic economic and financial services in Indonesia. “My aspiration in the future is that the alumni of our Islamic economics programs will be the driving force for the development of Islamic economics and finance in Indonesia,” Prof. Dwia closed.




VISIT BY EXPERTS FROM AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY TO UNHASUNHAS received guests from Australian National University (ANU): Professor Kiaran Kirk, Dean of ANU College of Science; Professor Stephen Eggins, Director of Research School of Earth Sciences at ANU College of Science; and Dr. Sara Beavis, a Senior Lecturer at ANU Fenner School of Environment and Society. In the visit Professor Kirk gave a lecture about Waging Chemical Warfare on Microorganisms: Drugs and Drug-Resistance; while Dr. Beavis talked about Artisanal Small Scale Gold Mining (ASGM): Legacies and Future Opportunities. After giving lectures, Professor Kirk and Dr. Beavis had meeting with Dr. Iqbal Djawad, UNHAS Director of Partnership; and officials and lecturers from Faculty of Forestry, Faculty of Public Health, &Faculty of Marine Science and Fishery. Prof.Eggins visited Engineering Faculty at UNHAS campus in Gowa, & had discussion with officials & lecturers from the faculty to explore possible collaborations in the future.

UNHAS got an honor to be involved in the NOVA PhD course at the University of Helsinki, Finland. One of the lecturers at the Faculty of Agriculture, UNHAS, Dr. Ir. andi Nasruddin., M.Sc., became one of the teaching teams at that event.

There were also several teachers who came from various countries including four professors from the USA, UK, Sweden and Finland.

This event was the first time for NOVA to involve teachers from Indonesia. Previously, this program always only invited lecturers from Europe, USA, or Canada.

The NOVA PhD course was attended by PhD students from various leading universities in Nordic countries such as Aarhus University, Univ. of Helsinki, University of Eastern Finland, Agricultural University of Iceland, Norwegian University of Life Science, and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

UNHAS LECTURER AS ONE OF INDONESIAN REPRESENTATIVES IN NOVA PHD COURSE

PUBLIC LECTURE BY THE MAYOR OF ALKHALIL (HEBRON), PALESTINEA very special event was held at UNHAS. Mayor of Alkhalil (Hebron), Palestine gave a public lecture entitled “Alkhalil, The City of Ibra-him, The Grandfather of All Prophets, The City of World Heritage in Danger”. The program was opened by UNHAS Rector, Professor Dwia Aries Tina Pulubuhu, and attended by about175 students and lecturers from UNHAS and other universities in Makassar. The event was also attended by HE Zuhair Al Shun, the Ambassador of Palestine in Indo-nesia; Mr. Mohammad Kamal Zeerhouseni and Mr. Belal Almuhtaseb from Palestine; Dr. Zainulbahar Noor, Former Ambassador of Indo-nesia to Jordan and now an official in BAZNAS; and Mr. Nico Adam, representative of Indonesian Embassy in Amman, Jordan.




The Department of International Relations of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of Hasanuddin University and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs collaborated to hold the 3rd MIKTA Goes to Campus Talk Show at Universitas Hasanuddin. MIKTA (Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, and Australia) was formed in 2013 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly with a mission to ensure that the global governance system is beneficial to all countries, and dedicated to advance non-formal partnerships.

MIKTA Goes to Campus III which carries the theme “Fostering Creative Economy & Contributing to Global Peace,” presented ambassadors and embassy leaders in member countries, namely the Mexican Ambassador to Indonesia Armando Gonzalo Alvarez Reina, Deputy Head of the Australian Embassy Mission in Jakarta Mr. Allaster Cox, Consular Embassy of the Republic of South Korea in Jakarta. Also present were representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Muhsin Syihab, as part of the Directorate of Economic & Environmental Development.

The four speakers were met with academics and think tanks, namely researchers from LIPI Nanto Sriyanton, lecturers of the Department of HI Unhas Agussalim Burhanuddin, and Executive Director of the Habibie Center.

The speakers reviewed many things about the presence of MIKTA, its role, and function, its constraints, and challenges in ensuring a safe and peaceful global governance & contributing to the progress and welfare of the nation-state in the world.

2018/2019 CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTATION AT UNHAS

More than 100 students & alumni attended Chevening Scholarship Presentation. The presentation was officially opened by the Head of International Office of UNHAS, Karmila Mokoginta, M.Arts. In her opening remarks, she stated her hope that more students and alumni from UNHAS would like to apply for Chevening scholarship, considering the fact that number of applicants from South Sulawesi

Province last year, was only around 70 applicants. Following to that, Rowena Rompas delivered a presentation for 40 minutes. She stressed that applicants are required to have working expe-rience at least for two years. The working areas are not necessarily in formal job. Alumni who work as lecturer assistant, laboratory assistant or in Non-Government Organization (NGO) are also accepted. She also involved 2 of Chevening Scholarship Alumni to share experiences including tips and trick in filling the application form and requirement that should be prepared prior to application process.

FACULTY OF LAW UNHAS OFFICIALLY JOINED THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LAW SCHOOLS (IALS) Unhas Faculty of Law is officially accepted to join the International Association of Law Schools (IALS). IALS is a private, non-political, non-profit, volunteer, collaborative, educated community dedicated to serve the law education community around the world.

Its main mission is to improve the law education throughout the world. By joining IALS, the faculty of Law of Unhas, have chance to get many benefits as a member. For instance, the faculty able to access to delegation papers or reports from the previous conference and Meeting, have access to IALS membership to

Groupsite - through social networking sites, get financial assistance and travel accommodation to conduct meetings or workshops based on needs. The Law faculty also can get the opportunity to collaborate with other schools and faculties, participate in the development of the curriculum and other guidelines for adjusting law education to the needs of diverse cultures and communities. In addition, members can also propose for the visiting professor program, become part of a law school network that collaborates in various types of faculties, students, and scientific exchanges program.

UNHAS LECTURER AS AN ASSESSOR OF ABEST21 ACCREDITATION IN AOYAMA GAKUIN UNIVERSITY, TOKYO

Prof. Dr. H. Gagaring Pagalung,SE.,Ak.,M.S.,CA., a lecturer of Accounting Dept, Faculty of Economics and Business, UNHAS who is also the Director of The Centre of Micro Finance BRI UNHAS become one the peer review team members of ABEST21 (The Alliance on Business Education & Scholarship for Tomorrow, a 21st Century Organization) accreditation in Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo. ABEST21 is one of the prestigious international accreditations for business school.

The mission of ABEST21 is to guarantee the quality of education and research at business schools. Prof. Gagaring, along with other members, the Presiden of ABEST21, Dr. Fumio Itoh, Prof. Hirotaka Kawano (Graduate School of Management, Kyoto University), Prof. Emeritus Dr. Richard Taggart Murphy (University of Tsukuba), Kayo Sato (ABEST21), and Mizuki Uehara (ABEST21) conducted the assessment at the Graduate School of International Management in Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo. The accreditation process was began by discussion among the Peer review team members, followed by a set of on-site interviews with the Dean, faculty members, staffs, students & alumni respectively. After that, the reviewer team had a tour around the business school to see the infra-structure & ensure that faculty meets ABEST21 accreditation standard. The process of evaluation was ended by a brief meeting with the faculty.

Faculty of Public Health, UNHAS was visited by Prof. Lybrich Kramer, MSc, IBCLC a Professor in child growth from Hanze Univ, Groningen, Netherland on Wednesday, 12 September 2018. She was the representative of Nutrition and dietetic department in Hanze University. This visit is a continuation of a former visit of her colleague to Unhas in April 2018.

The discussion took place at the Dean’s room. It was attended by the Dean himself, the vice dean for student & alumni, & 3 lecturers from Nutrition Study Program. The discussion was mainly about potential future collaboration between Nutrition Study Program 0f UNHAS & Nutrition & Dietetic Department in School of Health Care Studies, Hanze University. It was found that there were some similarities between the 2 study programs in terms of teaching methodology, so that the possibility of students exchange programs was also discussed.

PROFESSOR LYBRICH KRAMER FROM HANZE UNIVERSITY VISITED FACULTY OF PUBLIC HEALTH, UNHAS

Following the discussion, Prof. Lybrich delivered a public lecture about culture & stunting. It was attended by 100 students. She explained about Hanze University particularly the Nutrition & dietetic Dept, where She teaches. She also explained facts about the over-lapping case in stunting for child age 6–24 months (under 2 years). According to her research, stunt-ing at this age were caused by low educational level of parents, poor mobility of health care services, & level of health status of community.
