    FADE IN:

EXT. UNDERWATER FIRE STATION - DAY

In the bottom of the ocean sits a 4 story red building in the

shape of one of those fire hydrants dogs pee on. A few lightsshine through some windows. Fish and other ocean life fillout the strange, yet peaceful scene.

Suddenly a hatch opens and out shoots some sort of underwatervessel. It looks like a space ship crossed with a fire truck, with a ladder attached to the top.

It seems to be in a hurry.

INT. UNDERWATER FIRE SUBMARINE (MOVING) - CONTINUOUS

2 Men sit in the cab of this fascinating vehicle. Both seemquite serious in their shiny red leotard getups. These areactually made of some state of the art material that iswaterproof.

The driver is SANCHO, 65, a balding man with white hair. Helooks like an alternate version of Gandalf, with much lessfacial hair. Yeah, like a space age wizard, who may actuallybe an idiot.

His passenger is MICK CAMPBELL, 33, a slinky guy with fieryred hair.

These guys are those Underwater Firefighters we've all beenso curious about.

SANCHOThe turbo thrusters are workinglike a dream.

MICKAll of our cleaning must be payingoff!

SANCHONo time for compliments, we've got

    a fire to put out.

    Zoom.

EXT. BURNING SUNKEN SHIP - MOMENTS LATER

The Underwater Fire Submarine arrives at its destination, which is a sunken cruise ship on the bottom of the ocean thatis engulfed in flames.

INT. UNDERWATER FIRE SUBMARINE (MOVING) - CONTINUOUS

The guys stare in horror at the sight.

MICKWhat do you think caused it?!

SANCHOFrom the looks of it, this was noaccident.

    MICK

    How can you tell?

SANCHOBeen doing this job for a longtime. I've got a 6th sense for thisstuff.

MICKSome day I hope to be like you.

SANCHOIt's a blessing and a curse. Comeon, we have to move fast!

EXT. BURNING SUNKEN SHIP - CONTINUOUS

We cut away from the submarine for only a moment and when wecut back Sancho is swimming straight for the cruise ship inthe open ocean holding a long fire hose attached to the firesubmarine.

INT. SANCHO'S FACE MASK - CONTINUOUS

He's got a microphone in the thing, like Iron Man.

SANCHOMick, I need more slack. Pull theFire Submarine closer.

    MICK (O.S.)You got it boss.

EXT. BURNING SUNKEN SHIP - CONTINUOUS

The Fire Submarine inches closer. It looks as if Sancho isdragging it through the water.

INT. SANCHO'S FACE MASK - CONTINUOUSSancho is talking to himself about what he's doing.

SANCHOOkay guy, time to do what you wereborn to do. Just like Bermuda.

    (to Mick)Watering on.

    MICKI hear you watering on.

EXT. BURNING SUNKEN SHIP - CONTINUOUS

The hose in his hands begins shooting a powerful stream ofwater through the water and onto the burning cruise ship.

It takes about 5 seconds to put it out.

INT. UNDERWATER FIRE SUBMARINE (FLOATING) - CONTINUOUS

Mick throws his hands up in the air.

MICKYou did it, Sancho! You saved theboat!

SANCHONo Mick, we did it. As a team.

MICKYou're the hero, Sancho. I'm justthe guy in the background. I justdo what you tell me to. And it'salways right.

SANCHOYou flatter me, kid. Say, let's gograb some beers. My treat.

    MICKNo way!

INT. THE SAND BAR - LATER

Sancho and Mick sit at the bar in a crowded underwater bar, sipping some cold ones. Everyone in the crowd is looking atand pointing at them. They try not to notice.

MICKDoes the attention ever go to yourhead?

SANCHOYou have to keep everything inperspective. Fire fighting is animportant service to the community.First and foremost, I'm here tosave lives. Everything else is justicing on the cake.

Out of nowhere a ridiculously beautiful woman walks up to

    Sancho.

WOMANCan I buy you a drink?

SANCHONo. But I'll buy you one. What areyou having?

WOMANSomething sassy with an olive init.

    SANCHO(to the bartender)

You heard the lady. Put it on mytab.

    BARTENDERRight away, sir.

A drink that looks exactly like what she said slides down thebar and stops right in front of her.

    SANCHO

    Now, where were we?WOMAN

I have a catfish stuck in someseaweed. Some very high seaweed.

SANCHOThat's easy. We have a ladder onour ship.

    4.

    6/28

The woman shudders, overcome by Sancho's smoothness andpracticality.

WOMANI don't see a ring on your finger. Is it safe to assume there's not a

    Mrs. Firefighter.

SANCHOYou assume correctly. But I mustwarn you that I am a very busy manwith a dangerous and intriguinglifestyle. I attack life with thesame force that I attack fires atmy job.

WOMANI'm only going to live once. I MUSTdo whatever I can to make it work

with you. Even if it's inconvenientfor me to plan my life around you,I know it will be worth it.

SANCHOLet's start our relationship bykissing now.

    Sancho leans in and --

    BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP

    DISSOLVE TO:

    INT. SANCHO'S BEDROOM - MORNING

The real life Sancho springs awake and shuts off his annoyingalarm clock. It's 5 AM. For a second he thinks about thedream he was in and wishes it didn't have to end.

Sancho wakes up in the world that's all too real. He's in hisbunk room in the Underwater Fire Station. It's just like theone in his dream only here there aren't ever any firesbecause water puts out fires and it's silly to want to fightthem underwater. Get it?

But this is where Sancho lives and his room is impeccablyclean. Does a person really live in here? Yes, someone does. It's Sancho. The Underwater Firefighter.

There is hardly any clutter in his room. Everything has aplace and there seems to be zero dust.

    5.

    7/28

Sancho stands and looks out a round window in his wall intothe deep, dark ocean around him. There are some flood lightsright outside the station shooting out into the water, sosome of the world out there is visible but it's all blacknessbeyond that. Definitely no fires.

    INT. HALLWAY - MOMENTS LATER

Sancho, now in work out clothes and sneakers, walks down aquiet white hall with similar round windows lining one side.

He lets out a yawn but stops himself in the middle and slapshimself.

INT. WORK OUT ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Sancho runs on a treadmill in a tiny workout room. He seems

to be in excellent shape.A quick cut and he's got the treadmill spinning slowly as hewipes off his footprints.

A second later he's lifting weights.

Next he's wiping down the weight bench with a tightly foldedwhite towel. He's clearing every inch of the thing.

    He smiles at his handiwork.

    INT. SANCHO'S OFFICE - LATER

Now he's at his impossibly clean desk looking over graphs andcharts. One is labeled "Daily Chores" and has a list ofthings to clean every 30 minutes of the day for him and Mick.

    Yeah, Mick's real too.

Sancho has a sheet of graph paper laid out with Q-tips placedexactly within the lines and each is labeled with a specificjob: "Window 1A-C", "Window 1D-F", "Window 1G-H", etc. One Q-tip bumps out of its frame and Sancho nudges it back in itsplace.

    6.

    8/28

The camera pans and swings out the door, down a hall not toodifferent from the earlier one, past a shower room, theworkout room, through a door, down a flight of stairs, downthe original hallway, past Sancho's bedroom, past a closeddoor, through another door, down another flight of stairs, out another door, through a small living room to a small

kitchen, past a bathroom, through a door, down some morestairs, into a large basement storing the unused, yet stillinsanely shiny, Underwater Fire Submarine, through a door, down another hall to a large, glass door labeled "ExpulsionRoom". Everything has a slightly 70s style to it.

A peppy, muffled 80s song begins and the camera goes intosuper rewind backwards through all the previous stuff andstops on the closed door that was right next to Sancho'sroom.

    INT. MICK'S BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

Inside, the music is louder and less muffled. Mick is asleepon an unkempt bed. His hair is just as red as it was inSancho's dream. His blankets are all twisted up. He opens hiseyes slowly and seems to groan as he looks around.

His bunk room is almost the opposite of Sancho's. It's messyand out of order, almost to a violent extent. There are thetypical dirty clothes everywhere but there's also a chairlaying on its side and a couple of mysterious holes in onewall.

Mick gets up, ambles into an adjoining bathroom and

immediately starts peeing into a toilet while stretching andyawning. After that he brushes his teeth and looks in themirror. He seems doubtful of the guy he sees.

    INT. KITCHEN/LIVING ROOM - LATER

A few minutes later, a slightly more composed Mick enters thesmall kitchen next to the living room we passed by earlier. He notices that Sancho has already brewed some coffee andpours a cup. He opens up a cabinet that for whatever reasonis filled completely with Pop Tarts.

He pulls out 2 packages, tears them open and puts all 4 intoa 4 slot toaster before crossing the room to the couch andgrabbing a remote to turn on the TV.

After a bit of channel changing he arrives at The Today Show.Matt Lauer sends the audience over to the news desk soNatalie Morales can talk about the day's top stories.

Mick stares and grins at her with a sort of familiar look.

    7.

  • 7/30/2019 Underwater Firefighters Act 1

    9/28

MICKWhat's happening in the worldtoday, baby?

Ms. Morales tells of friction in the Middle East, a bankrobbery in Wisconsin where 2 people were killed, more on a

continuing story of a kidnapped little girl, something aboutLindsay Lohan being arrested again and a YouTube video that'sjust gone viral about people lip syncing to some old songonly the lyrics are all about some current event and twitteris in a whirlwind over it for some reason.

Through all of this Mick just stares at her and grins.

    MICK (CONTD)(to himself)

    I'm in love.

The Pop Tarts bounce out of the toaster and he's shaken out

of his daze. This happens nearly every morning.

Out of nowhere, Sancho's voice comes over the intercom.

SANCHOHey Mick. I'm assuming you're awakeand eating. Let's meet up in halfan hour at window 1A through 1C.

Mick just listens as he pulls his Pop Tarts out of thetoaster. He doesn't seem too jazzed.

    INT. SANCHO'S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS

Sancho sets the intercom device aside and looks over hisgraph paper with the Q-tips and picks up the one in the"Window 1A-C" box. He hesitates a second and grabs the nextone too. Why not?

He opens a desk drawer and pulls out 2 zip lock bags anddrops one in one and labels it. Then he does the same withthe other.

    INT - HALLWAY - LATER

Mick and Sancho are standing next to a window now. Must be1A. Sancho takes out the bag of the corresponding Q-tip.

SANCHONow remember, we Windexed thesewindows yesterday but now we'rejust doing touchups.

I know we did this just a few weeksago but I wanted to do a quickreview just to refresh you.

Mick knows it's not worth it to fight it so he just playsalong.

    MICKOkay.

Sancho pulls the Q-tip out of the bag and pretty much doesexactly what he's saying here.

SANCHOThe only real enemy here isstreaks, and they may be difficultto see. I've noticed that if I lookat the window at a 45 angle theyshow up a little more. You may have

to get close and squint a bit.

Mick mimics Sancho. They're both close up to the window andsquinting.

MICKI.. I think I see some.

SANCHOOkay, good. Now, I'm going todemonstrate the best procedurehere. You're going to bring the Q-tip up to the streak and yourinstinct will be to just wipe fromside to side, but you have to blockthat out. The key here is small, concentric circles. And don't beshy, you have to attack the streaksin consistent, diligent swirls. Youmight feel that nothing ishappening but you'll see. I'venoticed it can take up to 30,sometimes 40 swirls to clear thesurface of smudge marks.

MICKNow, you'll be watching to makesure I'm doing this correctly, right?

SANCHODefinitely. But only for this firstfloor.

    SANCHO (CONT'D)

    9.

  • 7/30/2019 Underwater Firefighters Act 1

    11/28

MICKAnd how many Q-tips per window arewe using?

    SANCHOI've allotted 1 Q-tip for every 3

windows. But don't rush through, this takes time to get it lookingright. We'll go for about half anhour before moving onto the nextproject.

MICKBut we'll pick this back uptomorrow, where we left off?

SANCHOPrecisely. Now, go ahead and giveit a try. I'll just stand here and

    observe.

    MICKSure.

Mick begins swirling. He's going a little fast. Sancho iswatching with a laser eye.

SANCHOSlow down just a tad. And make sureyou're going in circles and notovals. I know it sounds ridiculousbut it's -- it's very important.

Mick accommodates. Sancho squints his eyes. He isn'tsatisfied with what he's seeing.

SANCHO (CONTD)I feel you may be putting too muchpressure on the Q-tip. Think of itas if you're just sneaking up onthe streak. Like a ninja Q-tip.

    MICKNinja Q-tip. Got it.

He does this for about 5 seconds. Sancho nods.

SANCHOI think you can handle this. Justtake your time and try to get thesefirst 3 windows finished. If you doyou can go ahead and begin the next3. Now, let me give you a quickprimer for that.

    10.

  • 7/30/2019 Underwater Firefighters Act 1

    12/28

    MICKYep.

SANCHOIF you get to the 4th window in ourtime frame but you don't make it

through to the 6th, don't panic.Standard procedure here is to justput the Q-tip back in the bag andwith a felt tip marker write thenumber of the window followed bythe percentage you've completedcleaning directly on the bagitself. If you're up to it, draw apicture of the window and mark theareas you've already cleaned.

    MICKWhy do we do that?

SANCHOWell, tomorrow all we'll have to dois pick up the bag and finish thedoors the Q-tip is assigned to andit won't be confusing and we won'twaste any Q-tips.

    MICKOh. That's smart.

SANCHOYou learn these things as you go.Okay, I'll hand it to you. You'vegot about 25 minutes. Just takeyour time and remember that we'renot looking for perfection. Just doyour best.

MICKRight. And when's the morningmeeting again?

SANCHOAt 11. And I'll print out a new

schedule. There've been some minorchanges made.

    MICKFantastic.

Sancho nods, turns and walks away down the hallway. Mick hasa smile on his face that says, "I can't believe I'm actuallydoing this" as he continues cleaning the smudges.

    11.

INT - CONFERENCE ROOM - LATER

The clock strikes 11 AM and Mick and Sancho are now sittingat one end of a long, empty conference room table. Mick isleaning back, looking quite bored. Sancho has more of hispapers and graphs and is going over some notes.

    SANCHOOkay, let's get started.

    Mick sits up.

SANCHO (CONTD)We've had a productive month.

    MICKThat's great.

    SANCHO

The windows should be done by theend of next week. We've got somegood carpet cleaning coming uplater today.

    MICKWe cleaning it with Q-tips?

SANCHODon't be silly. I have some nicemustache combs that'll work well.

    Mick tries to absorb this.

    MICKYou're not kidding.

SANCHOFloor cleaning is a serious thing,Mick. We can't take too many risksdown here. Low sea level is a hotbed for bacterial activity.

MICKYeah. I know. You keep telling me

    that.SANCHO

If we don't respect filth thenfilth won't respect us. You thinkit's paranoia but it's a matter oflife and death, I assure you.

    MICKSure.

    12.

  • 7/30/2019 Underwater Firefighters Act 1

    14/28

Mick is not interested in this conversation. His attention isturning to a wall, which is much more fascinating.

SANCHOIs there anything you'd like to airout? You know, we do these meetings

to help. If you have any complaintsnow is the time to share them.

MICKMan, I don't want to step on your..stuff. I know how you are.

SANCHOWe're a team, Mick. If one of usisn't feeling up to task it affectsall of us.

    MICK

    Both of us.

    SANCHORight.

Mick takes a beat to compose his thoughts.

MICKSancho, this job is a real drag, man.

    SANCHOIt doesn't have to be.

MICKBut it is. This is an awful job.

    SANCHOPlease explain what you mean.

MICKI can't believe I have to actuallyexplain this to you.

    SANCHO

    Is it too difficult?MICK

It's not that. It's just.. it'sjust so pointless.

    SANCHOPointless?

    13.

  • 7/30/2019 Underwater Firefighters Act 1

    15/28

MICKAll we do is clean. Over and over.Sweep, mop, vacuum. Then all thisdetailed stuff you're so fond of.

    SANCHO

Work is work. No one ever said itwould be fun and games.

MICKNo, you don't get it. What we do,or what we're supposed to be doing, fighting fires under water, youknow how dumb that sounds?

    SANCHONo.

    MICK

You really don't get how dumb thatsounds?

SANCHOFirefighting is a HUGELY importantpart of society. If we weren'taround everything would burn down.

MICKYeah, but we live under water. There aren't fires in the bottom ofthe ocean. Have you noticed that?

    SANCHOIt's been light, but that's good.We're lucky.

MICKLight? There hasn't EVER been afire down here. You know how longI've been living in this stationwaiting for a fire to break out? 15years.

    SANCHO

Yeah, and I've been down here alittle over 30 years, what's yourpoint.

MICKI mean, don't you ever just wonderwhat it all means?

    14.

  • 7/30/2019 Underwater Firefighters Act 1

    16/28

SANCHOMick, firefighting isn't aphilosophical thing. It's apractical service.

    MICK

Our lives are a waste, Sancho. Thejoke's on us and we just take it.

SANCHOYou're thinking WAY too much aboutthis.

They sit in silence for a second.

Then Sancho reaches into his pocket and pulls out 2 mustachecombs.

    SANCHO (CONTD)

Come on. Let's go clean the carpet. It'll help you get your mind offit.

INT. KITCHEN/LIVING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Both guys are on their knees on the shag carpet between theTV and the couch, literally combing it with their combs.

Sancho has a serious, peaceful look on his face. Mick iscoming to a boil in his head. The comb for about 15 secondsand then Mick jumps up on his feet.

    MICKI cannot do this anymore!!

Sancho slowly stands to meet him.

SANCHOYou've just gotta take it onestrand at a time. It's simplestuff.

MICKNo! No, I can't -- comb carpetanymore! I don't have the capacityto do this. This is flat outtorchere(?).

    SANCHOIt's all about your perspective,Mick.

    15.

    17/28

Mick glares at Sancho like he's about to punch him in theface, but he holds it back.

    SANCHO (CONTD)(smiling)

    Don't lose your head, buddy.

MICKWhat the hell, man! You're the onewho's losing his head. You are awacko, Sancho!

SANCHOI know you don't want to hear itright now but you're justprojecting. You'll be okay. Whydon't you take a breather. Go spendsome time alone, I got this.

Mick doesn't see the point in arguing and this is idioticwork anyway.

    MICKThanks.

    He goes to his room.

Sancho watches him go with a smile on his face as if heunderstands the "phase" he's in.

INT. MICK'S ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Mick sits on his messed up bed with his back hunched and hishead in his hands. He looks over at the wall where the holesare and lets out a slow exhale.

He throws himself back on his bed, his head spinning. He rubshis temples as if fighting a headache. He stares at theceiling. Another exhale.

    A few seconds.

He sits back up and walks over to a chest and pulls open thetop drawer. He fishes through some socks and underwear andpulls out 2 photos. One is a much younger version of himstanding on a mini golf course with his arms around a girlabout his age. The other is him at around the same age withan older woman that could be his mom. He looks at bothpictures with a great amount of sadness. He misses both ofthese women.

His gaze falls from the pictures and lands on a suitcasebehind some furniture on the opposite wall. A closer look atit reveals a tag that says "waterproof".

    Thoughts spin in Mick's head.

    INT. KITCHEN/LIVING ROOM - MORNING

Sancho stands at the kitchen counter cooking eggs in askillet. Coffee has been made.

Suddenly, Mick walks in but once he see's Sancho he walksover to the couch. Sancho calls out to him across the room.

SANCHOI won't be long. Did you needanything specific?

    MICKI'm fine. I'll just wait untilyou're done.

Mick turns on the TV. It's The Today Show again.

    SANCHOGet some good sleep?

    MICKSure.

    SANCHO

You want some eggs? I'm just makingmine right now.

    MICK.No. Thanks.

    SANCHOYou want some coffee?

    MICKUh..

Sancho goes ahead and pours Mick a cup and sets it on thebar.

    MICK (CONTD)Okay, thanks.

He grabs it and stands next to the counter, baited.

SANCHOI've been thinking about what yousaid.

    MICKYeah?

SANCHOI get why you're losing interest inthis. I've felt the same way manytimes, believe me.

MICKLike this whole job is pointless?

SANCHOSure. This job is like cookingeggs.

    MICKWhat?

SANCHOJust go with me for a second.

Mick stares at Sancho, fully aware that he's beingmanipulated.

SANCHO (CONTD)Look at this egg cooking in thisfrying pan.

MICKThis is some drug thing. I've seenthis.

SANCHONo. No, look at the egg.

The egg was just cracked open and dropped into the skillet. It's burning.

    MICKWhat about it?

    SANCHOSee how dark it is?

    MICKYeah, you're burning it.

SANCHOWell of course, but you know why?

    18.

  • 7/30/2019 Underwater Firefighters Act 1

    20/28

MICKBecause you don't know how to cookeggs suddenly?

SANCHOMick, I've been cooking eggs longer

than I've been fighting firesunderwater. I know what I'm doing.

    MICKYour egg is burning, man.

SANCHOBecause I let it burn. I allowed itto burn.

MICKI do not understand what you'retrying to tell me here. Is the egg

    a metaphor?

SANCHOThe egg is a symbol for what weallow to happen and what we don't.

He grabs a spatula and throws the burnt egg in a trash can orsomething.

    SANCHO (CONTD)Check this out.

He cracks open another egg and drops the yolk on the skillet. He cooks it perfectly, sunny side up.

    MICK(sarcastic)

    Wow..

SANCHONah, I think I'll make it overeasy.

He flips it and does it over easy, then grabs the spatulaagain and places it on a plate.

    MICKI've learned nothing from this.

SANCHOYou're just not listening. Mick, weare in control of our lives. We cando whatever we want. We can thinkwhatever we want. It's all aboutperspective.

    19.

  • 7/30/2019 Underwater Firefighters Act 1

MICKThis seems like it makes sense butit doesn't make sense.

    SANCHOIt's all about perspective.

    This really bothers Mick.

MICKYou wanna know what this all lookslike from my perspective? I thinkyou've been underwater too long. Ithink you and I were idiots to comedown here and try to fight fires inthe bottom of the ocean. I think weare massive fools and I think we'vesacrificed a lot of importantthings to be here.

    SANCHOLike what?

MICKLike our family. Like our future.Like our real potential, instead ofthis ridiculous existence. Sancho,do you realize that the world weleft behind so long ago, it's STILLup there, STILL moving along?

SANCHOIt wasn't that great of a world,Mick. We aren't missing out onmuch.

MICKYou're a fool! You're a fool who'shappy in his foolishness! Youdeserve this awful existence!

    SANCHOWhat's that supposed to mean?

Mick is tired of waiting and squeezes into the kitchen. Heswings open his Pop Tart cabinet and pulls out 2 packs. Herips them open.

    Still talking..

    Sancho is right.

A fire has started on the cabinet just above the toaster. Itneeds help but it looks to be a manageable size.

Then it starts burning through another cabinet.

    Both guys have stood up

MICKThis is your hero moment, Sancho.

Sancho looks at Mick for a beat and then runs for thebasement stairs.

Mick stands and watches the fire for a beat, then runs forthe staircase that goes up.

INT. UNDERWATER FIRE STATION - BASEMENT - MOMENTS LATER

Sancho hurries in and grabs the perfectly coiled hose.Seriously, the thing is wrapped in perfect circles.

    SANCHOSorry, circles.

He spins it out and pulls one end to a round valve in thewall. He plugs one end in. There's a lever next to it. Hepulls it and starts dragging the other end up the stairs. It's a mess. Water is spraying all over the place.

    INT. MICK'S ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Mick runs quickly into his bedroom and reaches for hissuitcase. He turns to leave and then stops for a second.

He grabs it out of Sancho's hands and keeps trying to put thefire out, but it keeps growing. It looks like it's making itup to the next floor, though they don't know for sure.

Sancho has fallen to the floor, exhausted.

He ties one slack end to a loop on the non-inflated life raftand the other to his water proof suitcase.

Sancho is still unconscious and Mick is looking a littleworried. He double checks the knots and then straps theoxygen tanks on both of them.

He looks back and the fire has made it's way down the stairs.

    This is it.

He puts the oxygen masks on both of them and pulls themtight. Maybe too tight.

    MICKFamous last words.

He shuts his eyes out of fear and slams a big red button. Agiant door opens and water thunders in.

Both men, along with everything connected to them, fly out ofthe room and into the big dark ocean surrounding them.

Mick manages to pull the cord on the life raft and theybullet up into the darkness.

All sound disappears and a lonely violin plays on thesoundtrack.
