Repairs and Maintenance Afloat
Repairs Equipment failures are never planned and typically come when least expected. Performing critical repairs to stern tube seals and other equipment while keeping the vessel in service enables uninterrupted operation and continuity of performance. An extensive range of both Face type and Sealing ring type seals can be repaired afloat. This can be achieved either wet or via the instal-lation of a hyperbaric habitat allowing Lip type sterntube seals to be bonded insitu.
Maintenance Docking vessels is expensive! One option is to overhaul and maintain the seals underwater. Our products and capability provides a cost effective alternative solution for seal specific dockings. This allows operators to reduce downtime, maintain schedules and extend time between dry dockings

Wet Repairs / Maintenance
What is it? Divers work directly on the product insitu while fully immersed. Scope of Work: • Seal Repair (subject to seal configuration and
scope of work) • Bearing wear down readings • Rope guard removal/installation and modifications • Blanking of open sterntubes for inboard seal work Repair/Maintenance can be preformed without stern tube oil contamination (subject to seal configuration) Minimises vessel schedule disruption

Dry (Habitat) Repairs / Maintenance
What is it? Divers work directly on the seal in a dry environment using a Habitat installed between Propeller and Stern Tube Scope of Work: • Seal Repair inc component bonding • Seal removal and replacement /
retro fit. Repair / Maintenance can be performed without stern tube oil contamination. Maximises repair scope capability

Way of Working
As part of the exceptional standards of support expected from an OEM we produce a detailed and comprehensive project proposal upfront. This document contains the scope of work, time frames and complete cost estimation based on duration and complexity of work. As well as identifying all spare parts and any specialist tooling.

Cruise Ship Repair
• Wärtsilä was contacted by a large Cruise operator with reports of high levels of water ingress through the port side Wärtsilä Oceanguard outboard seal. Due to the design of the seal it was possible to manage the leakage with no risk of water entering the sterntube oil.
• A diver inspection of the seal highlighted damage to the Silicone Carbide interfaces and a substantial amount of fishing line around the seal. Working in conjunction with the diving team and the Customer, Wärtsilä compiled a detailed repair plan to perform an extensive seal overhaul underwater.
• An afloat repair was performed within the confined restrictions of a hyperbaric habitat (a large fabric bag retained to the propeller and Sterntube filled with air, creating a dry environment for the divers to work on the seal).
• After much planning, training and preparation, a team of Wärtsilä representatives and divers joined the vessel in Rhodes to undertake this overhaul. The repair was successfully completed, without the need to dry dock, allowing the ship to set sail and with no detrimental affect to the cruise schedule.
• Warm and positive praise and feedback was received from the customer with respect to all elements of the job.

Crane Platform Maintain
• There are only a very few dry docks in the world where this platform could be docked due to its depth, having a seal that can be repaired anywhere was a great benefit to the owner. In 2000, the platform was retrofitted with fully split Wärtsilä Sternguard seals (previously called Cedervall KR) due to the fact that these seals were fully serviceable under water.
• In autumn 2008, the owner contacted Wärtsilä S&B to ask if an overhaul could be made to the seals without docking the vessel. The overhaul was done afloat resulting in huge cost savings and a very happy customer.
