Understanding and Participating in The Utah Republican Party Caucuses & Conventions The Basics All state recognized political parties hold caucus meetings. The Caucus is a meeting where neighbors meet together once every two years to elect a few of their fellow neighbors to represent their Neighborhood in choosing Republican Candidates. These meetings take place in Schools, Homes, Churches, and Community Centers all across Utah on Caucus Night in March 2016. Register to Vote!! Step #1 Register to vote at your County or City Offices or when you renew your drivers license at the DVM. You can also register online at:You should also Register to Vote by Mail! Reminder: If you move, make sure you have updated your address with the County so you can be informed of your new precinct number and voting location. Get Involved! Attend Your Neighborhood Caucus Meeting The Republican Caucus is held in March in even years. Precinct locations are printed in your community newspapers and publicized on Television to help remind you. Your precinct number is usually located on your voter registration card. If you are unsure, call your County Clerk or The Utah Republican Party. The purpose of caucus meeting is to: Step #2 1.Elect Precinct Officers 2.Elect County Delegates 3.Elect State Delegates 4.Vote for Presidential Preference Election of Delegates Step #3 It is relatively easy to get elected, but if you run for a position make sure you are willing to fulfill the obligation of your office for the full two years. You will be representing your neighbors.. Duties of Precinct Officers Chair & Vice Chair Invite registered party members in neighborhood to caucus night; presides over neighborhood caucus meeting; help in finding location to hold meeting; disseminates candidate information to attendees. Works to register more Republicans in their area. Secretary & Treasurer Sign in attendees, assist in elections, take minutes of proceedings and count ballots. County Delegates Each precinct has a predetermined number of county delegates to elect. These delegates will promise to attend the County Nominating Convention in even-years, for their party, to vote to narrow down the candidates for County offices. This vote will determine if some candidates need to run in a primary election or not. They will also attend the odd-year Organizing Convention to vote to select the new County Central Committee members and County Party Leadership. State Delegates Each precinct has a predetermined number of state delegates to elect. These delegates will promise to attend the Utah State Convention, in even-years, for their party to vote to narrow down the candidates for State and Federal offices. This vote will determine if some candidates need to run in a primary election or not. They also promise to attend the Utah State Organizing Convention in odd-years to vote to select new State Party Officers. Meet the Candidates Do Your Homework Step #4 If you are a delegate it is your job to determine which candidate will serve best the needs of those in your neighborhood the best. You will need to: Listen to what your Neighbors are saying, Ask questions of candidates. Learn about the needs in your community. Familiarize yourself with the choices. Show up and vote. Narrow the Field Attend Your County or State Nominating Convention The purpose of this meeting is to: Step #5 1.Visit with all the Candidates from the Republican Party. 2.Listen to the formal campaign speeches by the Candidates 3.Vote to narrow the field until someone wins by a 60% margin OR until the two highest vote-getters are sent to run in a primary election. These meetings are open to the public but only those designated as County or State Delegates are allowed to vote. The State-Wide Primary Election Primary Day Elections Step #6 When a Republican Candidate cannot be chosen by the 60% of the Delegates all Registered Republicans in Utah participate to elect The Republican nominee.
