The purpose of this Tank Removal Report is to summarize historical activitiesinvolving underground storage tank #UT-47, located near Bldg . 324 , in Area I ofthe Rockwell International, Rocketdyne Division , Santa Susana Field Lab .

IV. Discussion
UT-47 was located in Area I of SSFL, immediately south of the Instrumentationlaboratory, Building 324 . It was buried approximately seven to ten feetunderground between the buildings and the Area I Service Road . The tank wasreportedly installed in 1959 and was used to store fuel oil to operate powe r
• generators during natural gas curtailment .
The tank was excavated and removed on August 26, 1987 as part of
Rocketdyne's Tank Removal Program . A soil sample was collected from thebottom of the excavation and analyzed by the Rockwell International, AnalyticalChemistry Laboratory . Diesel was reported at a concentration of 1,700 parts,per million. Records indicate that soils containing diesel fuel were removed atthe time of the tank removal .
Following the results to the soil sample, the site was referred to the VCEHDLeaking-Underground Fuel Tank--(LI FT) program- (attachmv ent D) ..Consequently, Rocketdyne engaged the services of Groundwater ResourceConsultants, inc . (GRC) to prepare a "Preliminary Site Assessment Work Plan,

Based on the GRC soil sampling results and a VCEHD correspondence, datedMarch 26, 1991, no further action is recommended (attachment G) .

The Ventura County Environmental Health Division (VCEHD)- hasreceived Rocketdyne's letter dated April 27, 1990, regarding the
underground tank abandonments . Rocketdyne's request for cleanclosure at sites requiring the submission of additional soilanalysis or cleanup documientation can not be approved at this time .
An evaluation of soil analysis indicates six sites may not be
clean.
The sites where tanks were reported leaking will be referred to theLeaking Underground Fuel Tank (LUFT) program of this office forreview of the information provided . A determination will be madeas to what work is necessary to close backfilled sites . Any
cleanup work must be approved in order to consider site closure .
Based on the submittals, several tanks have been included underabandonment records on file . Further site evaluation is needed toconfirm the correction of tank no 48 to tank no . 53, as discussed
March 20, 1990 ; as we as reconcile the number or tanks remove d
from buildings no. 9, 55, and 59 .

It does not appear likely that shallow perched groundwater will be
encountered in the immediate vicinity of the former Tank site ;
