In the pages of this Undergraduate Research Annual Report, you’ll find a snapshot of funded and curriculum-based projects that illustrate our growing culture of engagement in the broad spectrum of scholarship, research and creative activities (SRCA).

We’re committed to integrating experiential and community-based projects into our curricula, ensuring students across Faculties have the opportunity to work on projects with industry clients or community partners that help them put into practice their classroom learning and collaborate with their peers to address an external partner’s challenge. This annual report contains stories from across our Faculties and Research Centres describing the amazing work our professors and research experts do to integrate strong experiential learning components for the students that lead to innovative solutions to real-world problems.

Dr. Mary Preece President and Vice Chancellor

At Sheridan, purposeful creativity is a key part of our mission. We look for opportunities to put creativity to work, and to give our students opportunities to collaborate with external partners, professors and peers in other disciplines as part of problem-solving teams.

From our externally-funded undergraduate research to SRCA Growth Grant projects and curriculum-based activities, interdisciplinary collaboration is one of the hallmarks of Sheridan research excellence. This report includes a diverse range of projects that involved illustration and engineering, mindfulness and adult colouring, virtual reality and social innovation, to name just a few. I hope you’ll enjoy exploring how scholarship, research and creative activities have taken shape at Sheridan in the 2016-17 fiscal year.

Dr. Janet Morrison Provost and Vice President, Academic

This is an exciting time for undergraduate research at Sheridan. Through our commitment to scholarship, research, and creative activities (SRCA), we provide great experiential learning for our students, growth opportunities for our professors, and valuable insight and problem-solving for the communities we serve.

As the number of professors and students involved in SRCA has grown within our Faculties, so has the range of our activities and the value we deliver to our communities. This fiscal year, we received close to $8 million in external funding, and engaged over 2,000 students in a record 340 partnerships and collaborations with community and industry. Guided by our Academic Plan, we’re working to further integrate applied research across our curricula and create truly one-of-a-kind learning experiences for Sheridan students.

Research awards Pat Spadafora, Director of the Centre for Elder Research, is a collaborator on a Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada Community and College Social Innovation Fund grant awarded to Bow Valley College in Calgary. The goal of the project is to develop strategies to enhance the well-being, social and civic engagement of immigrant women retirees.

Dr. Manju Sunil Varghese and Daniel Liao (Faculty of Applied Science and Technology [FAST]) receive the first applied research grant for Sheridan’s School of Applied Chemical and Environmental Sciences from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Their project will evaluate partner Drystill Holding Inc.’s Pass-Through Distillation process, which could lead to more efficient production of bioethanol as a renewable fuel.

EventsThe Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences hosts its second Research Community Café at the Davis Campus, in partnership with the Region of Peel. Sheridan researchers from across the College and Peel community-based organizations share their social innovation work and discuss partnerships.

Thirty-two Early Childhood Leadership students present the findings of their research at the fourth annual Honours Bachelor of Early Childhood Leadership Research Symposium. In many cases, their research work is completed as a result of past placement/internships, or other partnerships built through the degree program.

‘Woven stories’ mural puts experiential design to workSheridan unveils ‘Woven Stories,’ a colourful, two-storey public art mural, on the western façade of the Rob Turner Building at the Davis Campus in Brampton.

The project is Sheridan’s first large-scale foray into experiential design. An interdisciplinary team of six illustration and industrial design students from the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design (FAAD) and an electromechanical engineering technology co-op student from FAST worked closely with PLANT Architect to design the window mural from vinyl applications and blinds. The mural tackles the long-standing challenge of glare and heat build-up in the adjacent stairwell and social space. The project team was mentored by professors from FAAD, FAST and the Office for Sustainability.
