President’s Report

Six premierships in 2006!

The 2006 season will be remembered as one of our most successful seasons in over 100 years of football at Brindisi Street. As a first year president of the club, I find myself in a proud and privileged position as I review the season that has just passed before us. When elected as president in 2005, I had a clear belief as to which areas the club needed to improve. Obviously at senior playing level we had just experienced the pain and disappointment of being relegated some months earlier. Once this bitter pill had been swallowed, we set about establishing ourselves in a position, off field, that would have a maximum affect on field.

The appointment of Luke Beveridge as senior coach was a coup for the Tigers. Luke's appointment and the concerted effort by a dedicated recruiting team during the summer months ensured we would turn the new year positive and we could enjoy the spoils of success in September. In a positive move, the club registered a team in the VAFA Club 18 competition.

At junior level, the unflappable Steve Zagami had set the wheels in motion for the upcoming season and with the appointment of several first time coaches the club looked comfortably placed. During February we held three registration days for the young tigers and with a tremendous team of volunteers, Steve had us positioned perfectly approaching the new season.

We were presented with a challenge to wipe out the remaining debt owed to the City of Kingston for their financial assistance during the construction of the Corboy Pavilion in 2003 and also to fund future upgrades to the facilities. Mal Garside accepted the position of Treasurer and set about putting procedures in place to ensure our viability towards the future. The financial report will indicate we have made significant progress in this area. Through the efforts of Mal and with the assistance of Mario Misso and the terrific fundraising this year we have been able repay all debts and build a war chest that will be used for those upgrades. Whilst we have enjoyed a successful season it would be naive to think this is the sole reason we see a significant boost to the bottom line financial result. The dedication by everyone involved in this result has been nothing short of superb and you all deserve to be congratulated!

Some areas that have assisted in our improved financial position are as follows: • A strong emphasis on subscription payment. • A review and new approach undertaken by the sponsorship committee. • A concerted effort to minimize expenditure. • A carefully planned VAFA season draw request. • The introduction of the Tiger Coterie. • The hugely successful "Ladies Match" social event. • The efficient operation of both the bar and canteen.

The introduction of the Tiger Coterie proved an overwhelming success in its first year, with the promise of offering a value for money social membership we raised almost $9000. Importantly, we held three tremendous pre senior match functions boosting our supporter base and game crowd attendances. This project will continue next season with a target of attracting 100 members. I am confident we will achieve our objective. I would like to thank my brothers Mark and Michael for their assistance in setting up the Tiger Coterie and those that worked tirelessly to co-ordinate the functions, and importantly the Coterie members for their support and attendance.

Following a review of our sponsorship arrangements, Blair Hutchinson undertook the unenviable task of selling our club to various business and members. This season we saw The Bendigo Bank and Scicluna's Fruit n Veg join the club as our major sponsors and along with a lengthy list of many generous sponsors and members, Blair was able to deliver a first class result. Well done Blair!

Without a doubt the social event of the year was the "Ladies Match", which was held at Brindisi St this year against Mordi/Braeside. With meticulous planning by a committee of mum's and the coaching and guidance of Phil Vawdrey, we witnessed an event unequalled in terms of family enjoyment. Whilst the football might have lacked the skills of the AFL, this event proved that with planning, commitment and promotion our club can produce community social gatherings that are the envy of other clubs. On behalf of the committee I wish to thank all involved in this tremendous production.

On the football field this season we saw unprecedented success culminating in our famous senior victory. Six premierships in one season is truly remarkable. This success is only brought about through dedication and old fashioned hard work. Obviously we are eternally grateful and proud of the coaches, captains, players, team managers, medical staff, support staff, sponsors and supporters who have collectively delivered an amazing result that we will remember forever.

To the successful premiership coaches Luke Beveridge, Tim Lamb, Owen Lalor, Tim Beasley, Steve Hyland and Shane Rayner congratulations! To coach a successful team is the ultimate personal reward. On behalf of the club we acknowledge your contributions.

To senior coach Luke Beveridge I would like to take the opportunity to formally thank you for the success you have ultimately bestowed upon us in your first coaching season. Your ability to lead by example, identify and rectify deficiencies and balance friendships and player welfare were a major part of the reason you have been able to deliver our premiership success this season. I have personally witnessed the numerous hours you have spent over and above what would be reasonably expected in your pursuit of success. I have no doubt that you will enjoy a sustained career as a coach and in doing so, compliment your playing days.

To my committee I would like to thank you for your dedication throughout, which at times has been a difficult journey. I have attempted to acknowledge the efforts of our army of volunteers during the season as I believe at times you can inadvertently be taken for granted. We should be extremely proud of our achievements in 2006 and together strive to place the club in a position of strength for the future.

I would also like to single out for special mention the efforts made by these valued members during this season.

Tim Beasley As well as coaching the under 17's to a premiership, Tim prepared two grounds for us on a weekly basis.

Mark Bennett Mark was instrumental in the organization of the Sunday evening tucker.Dale Collins For his devotion to the club website and with the assistance of Marge

Pritchard they produced the weekly newsletter. Francis Barr Francis was always there to do the statistics, help with video operations,

behind the bar and with catering.Peter Corboy Peter as one would expect was at the club daily. He also kept a keen eye

on me during my first year as President. Kevin Lynch A worthy winner of the best club person, Kevin operated the bar

professionally as well as preparing his culinary delights. Damien Harris Not only did Damien coach the Under 9's, he umpired the reserves and

prepared our legal documentation.Brother Ken Omerod During his final year at St Bede's College, Brother Ken has continued to

support and promote our club beyond our expectations.Peter Davis A dedicated clubman, Peter stepped aside as club secretary mid season

due to work commitments. With limited time available he still dedicated his experience and dedication.

Shane Heatley Special thanks for co-ordinating our Auskick program over the past five years.

Phil Vawdrey A genuine character, Phil ran Sunday evenings and in doing so relieved the pressure from both Steve and myself.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank my family and friends. Their support over the last year has been nothing short of fantastic.

With the members consent I would like to continue as club President during season 2007. I believe if we continue to commit the necessary energy to the club we will enjoy another successful season both on and off the sporting arena. Our committee will strive to protect the investments our predecessors have made for over one hundred years. We will act responsibly and at all times make decisions that are only in the best interests of the St Bede's/ Mentone Tigers AFC. These decisions may not always prove popular however tough decisions seldom are.

Enjoy the off season, have a safe Christmas and New Year and I look forward to seeing you down at Brindisi St in 2007.

Go Tigers!!!

Secretary’s Report

What a season 2006 has been for St Bedes/Mentone Tigers AFC ! All the hard work and dedication over the course of the previous years and the preseason culminated in three senior teams and three junior teams winning premiership flags. Congratulations to all the players, officials and supporters who worked for that fantastic result.

From a club point of view, I think most members would know that a number of key committee positions were vacated and filled by new members this year. I would like to personally thank and congratulate the previous committees for their achievements and for the facilities that their hard work and dedication has left for the club. There is no doubt that without the drive shown by those committee members the club would not be enjoying the updated social club rooms and the Corboy Pavilion and the club would not have achieved the on ground successes of 2006.

As a first time, late recruit onto the club committee I took on the pared down role of secretary. The responsibility for VAFA and MSJFL secretary was taken on by others. I find myself in awe of the calibre of people involved in the running of this club. These people are all totally committed in their support of the club. Not only have they have been generous with their own time, in many cases they have enlisted their family members as well to serve the needs of the club. At the very least, the time that they can spend with their families has been limited by the time taken for their roles with the club.

Matt Beasley stepped into the challenging role of President and took with it the role if not the title of senior football operations manager. And the club has been the beneficiary of Matt’s energy and dedication this year. The role that Matt filled this year was the equivalent of a full time job and more. Matt put himself on the line to ensure that whatever jobs had to be done would be completed often completing the jobs personally. Matt’s rapport with the senior players and officials has helped build a strong basis for the future of the senior sides.

Mal Garside took on the job of handling the clubs finances this year and has also been involved with Shane Rayner in organising the merchandising for the club and with Matt in operations. Mal’s experience in business has allowed him to bring a level of attention to detail that the accounting and financial reporting requirements of a club such as St Bedes/Mentone Tigers requires these days. Mal’s contribution to the club extends to sponsorship through his business and to the hands on approach that he takes to jobs that need to be done around the club.

Steve Zagami, as Vice President Juniors, always made himself available for any jobs that needed to be done and has always been available for the junior parents when an issue needed to be dealt with. Steve has coordinated the many events in the junior team calendar with aplomb and like Matt, he is rarely seen without a phone to his ear - he is a master of multi-tasking.

Shaun Napier as Vice President Seniors represented the club for initiatives like the Red Cross Blood Bank challenge, worked on sponsorship initiatives with Blair and, as captain of the reserves, was a club leader for the senior teams.

Darren Fisher continued his role of MSJFL secretary – a time consuming and demanding role that requires endless patience with the administrators at the league. It is difficult to fully appreciate the number of discussions and scheduling revisions that take place before a season’s fixture is locked in. With the conflicting considerations of game times, numbers of teams and available venues it takes persistence to complete the job. And it takes a sense of humour when a good job is unravelled mid-season by late changes to team gradings.

Mark Beasley was the VAFA secretary and worked with Dale Collins to ensure that the senior players were all registered and legal, and that the ongoing weekly reporting requirements of the VAFA were handled without fuss. Mark then looked after the bar on Thursday nights and acted as MC at many of the functions held throughout the year.

11

Page 12: UNDER 9 Blue€¦  · Web viewAnnual Report. 2006 TABLE OF CONTENTS. CLUB OFFICIALS 2006. 2. Committee. 2. Club Leaders. 2. COMMITTEE REPORTS. 2. President’s Report. 2. Secretary’s

Shane Rayner handled the job of merchandising as well as running the Southern Road Reserve sub committee and coaching the Under 13 teams to a premiership. Shane, with help from Mal, spent countless hours sourcing new products and deals for merchandise and formulating plans to keep the clubs stock levels down while still supplying merchandise in a timely manner – not an easy feat to accomplish.

Mario Misso brought his considerable business experience and expertise to the committee and helped Matt recruit committee members with a view to building an ever more professional approach to the running of the club. Mario and the rest of his family are also generous financial supporters of the club and are always there to help with any jobs that need to be done.

Blair Hutchinson took on the primary responsibility for sponsorship this year and with able assistance from Mal and Shaun. Blair had great success with his approaches to previous and new sponsors and followed up diligently to ensure that the sponsors honoured their promises.

Tim Beasley, in addition to his role in the committee, took on the ground marking for both the Mentone Reserve and the Southern Road ovals every weekend for the season. This is another of those time consuming jobs that cannot be missed or postponed and we were fortunate that Tim made it his job.

John Meyer has a long history of involvement with football in Mentone and has brought the experience and sound judgement gained over those years to the current committee. John is also working with Kingston Council and the Mentone Cricket Club to establish the Committee of Management for the pavilions and facilities at Mentone Reserve.

Marj Pritchard has brought many years of experience with various businesses and community organisations to the club. As well as her role on the committee she has worked tirelessly in a number of roles – timekeeper on game days, preparing meals and serving at the dinners on Thursday nights after training, helping out with canteen and other duties.

I would like to thank all of those committee members for all the effort that they have put in to making the club an even better place to be this year.

But the committee were by no means the only ones making a contribution to the successful season. A number of club stalwarts have pitched in wherever necessary to do all the jobs that keep the place going. The description below is only an indication of what they do for the club. I don’t have the room to list everything that they have done to give them full recognition. My thanks to them for the persistence they have shown over the years.

Dale Collins Our most recent past president has still been busy with VAFA registrations secretary, general administration, web site editor and designer, newsletter production

Peter Davis A club man who is always on the lookout for ways to improve the club and its facilities and who helped me immensely with the secretary role

Gerry Ryan Our volunteer trainer who kept the players ready for actionFrancis Barr Our team statistician who provided valuable information to the senior

coaching panel and helped with catering for lunches and Thursday nights dinners

Russell Gould Also our team statistician and commentator Paul Newport The club video producer and recipient of a life membership this yearKevin Lynch Our genial barman and host and caterer at our lunchesTony Norman& Joanne Norman Who were always on hand to help out with lunches and functionsRod Bryant Our chef du jour who is always ready to help out on the big (and small)

occasionTony Bova Who has been a terrific ambassador and recruiter for the club, has pitched in

to help with any jobs that need to be done as well as being a generous sponsor

12

Page 13: UNDER 9 Blue€¦  · Web viewAnnual Report. 2006 TABLE OF CONTENTS. CLUB OFFICIALS 2006. 2. Committee. 2. Club Leaders. 2. COMMITTEE REPORTS. 2. President’s Report. 2. Secretary’s

Kerry Bova Who quietly supports the club and runs the family business when Tony is on club business

Mark Bennett For organising the culinary delights and raffles for the Sunday nights Tracey Cahill The organiser of many a fine celebrationPeter and Malcolm For taking care of the scoreboard on match daysKevin Gaynor For providing the club with a sound system and the expertise to work itPeter Corboy For organising the canteen, organising supplies, running all the errands,

keeping the committee honest and still finding time to come up with a joke every week.

I’d also like to extend my thanks to all the parents who put up their hands to take on the jobs of coach, runner, trainer and manager for the junior teams this year, and also to all those parents who helped their teams out with the training and match day duties. With all the demands on your time it can be hard to squeeze in, but nothing compares to watching the development of the young players as they progress through the ranks and develop their skills.

And then there are the supporters who come from all over to watch their teams in action week in and week out. Their continued support and depth of feeling is what makes the club so strong.

But most of all I say thank you to the players of all ages for choosing to come to St Bedes / Mentone Tigers. We believe that we have a strong club with much to offer in terms of facilities and character, but it is the players and their talents that everyone comes to watch.

No matter how much space you devote to thanking people there will always be someone deserving whose name is not mentioned and I hope I haven’t offended anyone by omission.

On the social side of things we have also had a hugely successful year with a number of well supported and very successful functions both formal and informal that were organised by Jon Kane and Matt Beasley. But we are looking to strengthen the social side further next season by re-establishing a sub committee for social functions. The value of having a dedicated organising team was proven by Jen Blackburn, Kath Barca, Georgie Pickles and Mary Lanera and their able assistants who turned a narrow loss on field in the ladies match into a triumph for the club.

In a club of this size there are many opinions and sometimes they are passionately held. And that is a positive for the whole club because it keeps us on our toes and forces us to think about where our energies will be best directed. We have been fortunate again this year to have so many people involved with the club who have their own style and yet all have the best interest of the club at heart.

As a club we often receive compliments that are not publicly noticed. On a number of occasions comments have been made about the professionalism that our coaches and officials have shown at the matches. One great example of this was the email and letter sent by Wayne Holdsworth, Club Development Manager at Football Victoria, to compliment the under 16 team after a thrilling, close win over Ormond whom he was coaching. Wayne commented on the graciousness of the boys in their victory, in particular their young coach Brendan Neville and the captain Jaime Neville Young. As a club we can’t take credit for the character of these young men, but we can say that we can spot it and recruit it. My congratulations to all of them.

There is much afoot for next year and the plans have started already. Some of the goals you will recognise – they have been carried over from previous years. We have limited budgets and resources and each year we need to flip through the wish list and choose the items that matter before turning our energies to achieving them.

Kitchen extension and renovation Away team change room and toilet renovations Gents toilet renovations and disabled toilet Additional training lights with associated upgrade to fuse box Follow up the successful sponsorship initiatives of this year Develop relationships with more schools in the area Develop media / marketing relationships

I think we have a fabulous club at St Bedes/Mentone Tigers and I encourage everyone to pitch in to help in any way they can. The more you involve yourself in the club, the more you and your family will get out of it.

Have a happy and safe summer and I hope to see you all back fit and ready for the 2007 season.

Hall of Fame Committee Report

The 2006 season will no doubt become an indelible piece of our Club’s history, with a historic 6 Premiership Cups to proudly display. At the time of writing the Hall of Fame Committee believe that no VAFA Club can boast having won 6 Premierships in the one season!

This amazing year of success was enjoyed by many, and we were indeed proud that so many past players, supporters and committee, were able to be at home and away games throughout the season and to witness the three finals, culminating with the Grand Final at Sandringham.

The Hall of Fame committee were thrilled to be able to organise the reunions of the Mentone 1956 and 1976 Senior Premiership Teams this year, held at the pre match luncheons prior to the senior games on May 27th & August 12th.

It was and has been a most gratifying experience to track down and locate past players and officials from these two famous era’s in the Mentone Football Club and to see the enjoyment and emotion of these people’s faces at the reunion lunches.

However, just as rewarding is seeing our past players proudly watching the senior and reserve games and the young talent representing our Club today, and the smiles on these warriors of the past, when able to join the players post match to sing the Club theme song is a memory that will live long.

There were 40 new inductees into the Hall of Fame from these two Premiership Years, who were acknowledged for their individual performances as a player or their efforts as an official or supporter at the reunion luncheons on these two days.

Special booklets to commemorate the new inductees were published and distributed by the HOF Committee, and the full list of Hall of Fame members, including new inductees, are now available on the Club website.

Next year we will again be organising the reunions of two Premiership teams. The Mentone FC 1967/68 ‘back to back’ Premiership teams and the St.Bedes OCFC 1977 VAFA Premierships teams (Seniors & Reserves) will become the main focus of the HOF committee. I would personally like to thank Robert Hess and Brett Marchant for their outstanding efforts, throughout the 2006 season in organising our HOF reunions and inductions. In addition the HOF committee would like to thank the many people who assisted on the days in the organisation of the reunion lunches, in particular Kevin Lynch and Francis Barr and all the support staff who provided outstanding meals and service, to those who were able to enjoy on these days.

Finally, our thanks to President Matthew Beasley and the Club Committee for their support of the Hall of Fame committee and organisation that goes into holding these successful events in our Club and to Luke Beveridge, Tim Lamb, Owen Lalor and all the players in the senior, reserve and U/19 teams congratulations on the outstanding success of this season which will in time become your own special piece of the Hall of Fame.

SENIOR TEAM REPORTSSenior Coaches Report

What an amazing year it has been for the Club! We have all looked back at some stage and asked ourselves; “what made the difference?” There are different opinions on this one, but I am of the firm belief that weight of numbers has made us successful in 2006. We simply had too many people with talent and work ethic, on and off the field, striving to make the club successful. Most significantly, the players’ efforts were sustained over what is a lengthy football year and ultimately their strength and their unity prevailed.

Planning is an obvious key to success and our player retention/recruitment strategy was a significant factor in our success. The work by the players and their networks (particularly Geoff and Mat Terrell) to entice their mates to the Club, ultimately enabled us to:

Field our inaugural Club XVIII side (a new and exciting dynamic for the Football Club), and

Play seven players who had returned or were new to the Football Club in the Senior Premiership side.

Our success can be attributed to a new injection of talent but also significantly the general improvements and rise in performance levels of our players who have been at the club prior to 2006.

My focus on player retention was overwhelmingly supported through the efforts of Matt Beasley who increasingly made the players feel appreciated and loved. Our strongest intangible assets are our friendships! We stay together and entice our mates down to Brindisi St mainly through mateship. This realisation is not new but it drives home the important fact that our strongest tangible assets are our players. The more content our players are, the more involved they want to be and the more they want to contribute. Thanks Mat and everyone who helped the players this year, you made the difference!

I believe our achievements this year are a direct result of our players’ devotion to each other and their Football Club! We need to make sure that in 2007 the players continue to enjoy their friendships so that ultimately their football flourishes. I believe the link between friendships and performance is stronger at an amateur level because it is our choice how long we stay involved. We won’t be told that our time is up! Therefore we are able to build relationships for as long as we want to or as long as our busy lives allow us! These strong bonds correlate to success on the football field and it is a priority for me that all players treat each other with respect and with the dignity that we would expect to be treated. I believe this philosophy fosters unity and builds character in individuals and as a direct result; the St Bedes Mentone Tigers Football Club will thrive.

We have set new standards and I am hoping our 2006 success makes us hungry for more. It would be a tragedy if we became complacent and did not capitalise on what can be a sustained period of success for everyone!

After our loss to AJAX in the 2nd Semi Final, things happened at the club that made me realise (if I hadn't before) what an awesome club St Bedes Mentone Tigers is. People gave up their Father's day plans to cook the boys breakfast after our rehab session at Mentone beach. Both the seniors and reserves walked into the club at about 10.30am and it was as if they walked into a Hotel buffet. I have seen people drop sportsmen and women like a hot

scone when things go bad. In contrast, I was witnessing first hand how much people at the club care for the players.

People who I confided in during the week know how toey I was leading up to the Preliminary Final against Parkdale. In my eyes it would have been a disaster for the players to work so hard for so long, be undefeated and walk away without anything to show for it except 3rd position on the ladder. We had to win and we did, in an emphatic manner. I have no doubt that the way the boys were treated by Mat Beasley, Francis Barr and the Garside family on Father’s Day 2006 had an enormous effect on the playing group and their ability to refocus.

As I reflect on our 1 point Grand Final victory over AJAX on 16 September 2006 at Trevor Barker Oval, Sandringham. I think about all the elements, all the little things that made up that day. I think about the individual efforts, the heroics that saw us claw our way back from 47 points down in the 2nd quarter. I think about seeing grown men cry as they struggled to control their emotions after the game. I think about all the people who deserve to share in this premiership with the players. I think about family and friends and the proud looks on their faces as they swarmed us after the game. I think about the affect the day will have on the club in the future. I think about guys like Jonno Kane who is such a part of it, yet couldn't take the field (just had a knee reco from 2nd semi incident). I think about singing the club song with the victorious Reserves and U/19 sides that had won the premiership earlier in the day. The vivid memory of the three cup pyramid in the middle of us while we bellowed will never leave me. I think about what got us to the Grand Final. Most of all I think about the players. Even now as I type, I am emotional. I reflect on their attitudes and their ability to push through the mental and physical anguish they experienced during the game. I remember their steeliness and their systematic approach to the comeback. I remember their words as if they had just been spoken to me. "One more, we need to get it back to seven down!" "One more, we need to be in touch at half time!" Many people have asked me, "how did you do it?" I have pondered and asked myself how, when the opposition is never satisfied and it is the biggest and most important game of the year, did we find it within us to drag ourselves to the handles on the cup from a seemingly hopeless position? We all know the answer! It has got something to do with integrity and belief. It has got something to do with physical and mental hardness. But mostly it is because of mateship and care for each other. We will never forget what we did for each other. Nor will anyone else who witnessed it. Not for a long, long time!

I am eternally grateful to all the players for embracing my ideas and allowing me to experience these moving times. Thankyou to Timmy lamb my right hand man, for your work throughout the year and your enormous efforts from the sideline during the Grand Final. You were awesome mate. We are lucky to have you continue in the ‘Chairman of Selectors’ capacity as you and Danielle ponder life as Mum and Dad of twins.

Thanks to Luke Wintle for your efforts as our Captain. I believe you have grown as a person Juice, you have had a very good year and your tenacity to get yourself up for the Grand Final will go down as one of the more inspirational efforts leading up to Grand Final day.

Thanks to Peter Kerr (Nobby) our quiet unassuming Team Manager and workhorse who has made everything on match day run like clockwork. Thanks to Stevey Bregaz, my runner, for all your help and support during the year. You just got across the finish line with those troublesome feet of yours mate – you are a tough bugger.

Reserves Team Report

What a Year!

This is the last line of my season report for 2005: "To the playing group I would like to say that the coaching panel for 2006 of Luke, Owen, and myself are ready for the challenge and are prepared to go the extra mile to ensure we succeed, the question I ask is, ARE YOU?"

I think we can safely say that the answer to the question I asked at the end of last year was an emphatic YES !!

It is now just over two weeks since we achieved the ultimate by destroying Old Camberwell by 88 points to take out the C Section Reserves Premiership, and it still brings a smile to my face!! The final result was nothing short of what the players deserved after an awesome season that saw them dominate the competition. We won 19 of a possible 20 games with one hiccup against Old Camberwell away. We finished the home and away season with the highest % of any team in the ammos - an incredible 380.67 ! We only conceded 600 points for the season, an average of 33 a game and we scored a huge 2284 at an average of 126 points a game. You do the maths and that works out to an average winning margin of 93 points a game. ( I know prez - not quite a hundred!) Now stats can be manipulated to support almost any argument, but in this case I think they spell out just exactly how dominant the boys were this year.

Our last home and away game was against Ormond and it was the ultimate dead rubber because regardless of the result we were going to play them the next week in the 2nd Semi Final. We had two options, just cruise along in the game and save ourselves for the next week or try and employ a bit of Steve Waugh mental disintegration and give it everything. The players seemed to prefer the second option as we pulled out our best performance of the year to that stage and pummelled Ormond by 130 odd points. The seeds of doubt had been well and truly sown!

To capitalise on that we had to ensure we got off to a good start in the 2nd Semi - I was a bit concerned going in that the previous weeks demolition might still be on the boys minds - well it was - and they just wanted to keep it going as we had 17 shots at goal in the 1st quarter to be 9.8 to 2.2 up at quarter time - it was effectively game over. There were some brilliant performances in this game - Jesse Windebank played one of the best 1st halves you are ever likely to see with 17 possessions and 3 goals, Kempy kicked 6 and marked everything in sight, Mick McGettigan dominated in the middle and the half backline of Kieran McConnell, Jordan Lynch and Jamie Maddocks were brilliant. When the final siren sounded you could sense that whilst happy with making the Grand Final the boys were by no means satisfied, there was one game to go.

We started our preparation the next morning with a recovery session and I would like to echo Bevo's sentiments on the breakfast that was put on back at the club by Matt, Francis and the Garside's - BRILLIANT. Unfortunately not everything had gone to plan and the seniors had a narrow loss but getting everyone together on the Sunday morning was crucial and I believe played a big role in our ultimate success. I ventured back to Sandy and saw Old Camberwell come from 6 goals to nil down at quarter time to beat Fitzroy Reds and progress to the Preliminary Final - pretty impressive. We continued our Grand Final preparation with training on the Saturday of the Preliminary Final - we felt it was important to get together again and then head out to Mazenod to hopefully see Old Camberwell and Ormond beat the living suitcases out of each other ! Conditions were tough with a strong wind and OC got over the line to reach the Grand Final from 4th. The highlight of the day of course was the seniors great win over Parkdale that saw them reach the Grand Final and the Club go up to B Grade - well done boys. We had another recovery on the Sunday (even though we didn't play!) and it was great to see guys who had missed out on the 2nd Semi Final side continue to work hard and train and put their names forward.

Training during the week was good and selection on the final Thursday night was difficult. Unfortunately our on field leader and general Shaun 'the ox' Napier broke his wrist in the 2nd semi

20

Page 21: UNDER 9 Blue€¦  · Web viewAnnual Report. 2006 TABLE OF CONTENTS. CLUB OFFICIALS 2006. 2. Committee. 2. Club Leaders. 2. COMMITTEE REPORTS. 2. President’s Report. 2. Secretary’s

and couldn't take his place in the team, a hard pill to swallow for someone who had contributed so much to the team and had lead them so well but the manner in which Ox took the disappointment only highlighted why he was the captain. For every tragic tale there is an uplifting one and this year it came in the form of Dean 'Lazarus' Porter. Portsy suffered a bizarre and serious leg injury in the 2nd semi but with a bit of luck and a lot of hard work he was right to go. Again we had quality players missing out which is always tough, I won't mention names but you know who you are and you should all be proud of the way you handled the disappointment. A side can be judged by the quality of it's bench and we went into the Grand Final with an interchange of Luke Porter, Dave Ferrarro, Adam Paterson and Mick Zhara. Anyone who has seen these boys play will agree that is a pretty awesome bench!

With Ox out we had to decide on a Captain for the big one, there were a few candidates but one stood out for me for a number of reasons and he led us superbly on the day - Michael McGettigan. Well done Shag and thanks mate. The Grand Final was a true reflection of the season with the boys putting on an awesome display. 10 shots to 1 in the 1st quarter set things up and we didn't let up all day. Andrew Walstab who had an interrupted season with injury reminded everyone what a quality player he is dominating off a wing, Mick MCGettigan was again enormous in the pivot, Steve Kidd, Damien Waters and Matt Terrell carved up the midfield and Gary Kempster kicked another 6 to round out a terrific finals series. We had winners all over the ground, the backline was super, Simon Doukas played a terrific game at full back, Jimmy Connelly shut down the oppositions most dangerous forward and we got a lot of drive from Dean Porter, Jimmy Terrell and Kieran McConnell. Kizza unfortunately pulled his hammy but we were lucky to have Adam Paterson on the bench who just slotted into half back and picked up where Kizza left off. We had 22 contributors and didn't miss a beat when we made changes, again the advantage of such a strong squad. One of the most pleasing aspects of the game was the courage and the discipline the boys showed. Camberwell had 3 players sent off, two reported (who both got weeks) and a couple more who should of. Don't get me wrong, the boys stood up for themselves but also had their eyes on the footy and the prize at the end of the day. We thought they would have a crack at us physically and welcomed the challenge, what OC didn't bank on was the hardness and resolve of our players to get the job done. The final siren was great, but for me 3/4 time was nearly just as good, the chance to speak to the boys for the last time when they were 13 goals up in the Grand Final was a moment I'll cherish forever. Thanks for giving me that opportunity boys. The last quarter was one to savour and again we held our composure whilst the opposition lost theirs - well done again boys (I seem to have been typing that phrase a lot) We ran out 88 point winners and the celebrations showed how much it meant to everyone.

Wins like that just don't happen, a lot of work goes into them and there are many who contribute. Firstly to all the players - thankyou all for your efforts during the year. It was a pleasure to coach you (at times it was like winding up a toy and watching it go you were that good!) and I'll never forget this year. To Bevo, thanks for all your advice, help, guidance and friendship. Make no mistake about it, you were the driving force behind 3 flags, not one. We started building for this over 12 months ago when you were appointed and we bloody did it! Thanks mate. To the best team manager in football, Dave Paterson, thanks Patto. All I had to do was turn up and coach - you did everything else, including reminding me when I should perhaps lower my voice!! In all seriousness Patto you earnt that medal you had around your neck on Grand Final night as much as any player - and the hangover you had the next day! To my great mate and runner Chrissy Meyer - thanks again mate. I know you love being involved and I loved having you there, you and Patto acted as Assistant Coaches and I couldn't have done it without you. To the Medical Staff, Mick (Feathers) Beasley, Stacey, Shari, Tash and Gerri. Super effort, you guys keep our most important assets (the players) on the park and without you we would be in a lot of trouble. Feathers - there may be a career as a boundary rider for you after your post Grand Final Interviews! To Newy - again the videos are invaluable mate. To Francis Barr and Mark Beasley - I know you would rather watch the game properly than do the stats but that little sacrifice helped us achieve the ultimate. To Matt Beasley - what a first year Prez. Some of you may have no concept of the amount of time Matt put in, but it was awesome mate. As Bevo said in his post game speech - you were a key factor in creating an environment that people wanted to be involved in - a massive key to our success. To the rest of the committee, thankyou for all your work during the year in what is generally a thankless task. To all of the people who helped out on match days - Marg, Ron, Pete thanks to you too. To Tom and Dan Garside - you two are champions, always there to help at training and on match day,

thanks boys. To the senior side - amazing performance all year and especially when it mattered!. Thanks also to all the guys playing seniors for the way you were prepared to take on board my thoughts and messages especially when Luke was playing. It was a privilege to be involved with you guys as well, although I did think I was going to have a heart attack on the bench in the Grand Final! To Owey and the U/19's - great effort boys congratulations on an awesome season, to miffa - the toughest job of all the coaches in the 1st year of the clubbies - well done mate. To my wife Danielle, thanks again babe, you are a star and I couldn't do it without you.

I have rambled on a bit, but after a season like that there was a fair bit to say. Savour the memories boys - you earned them. Lamby

Under 19s Team Report

PREMIERS!!!!

The 2006 season would have to be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences I have had over my past 6 seasons of coaching. Not just from winning a Premiership but also from the week to week dealings with the under 19 playing group. It was evident from the start of the season that this group had a very important ingredient in that they were a very close and tight group on and off the field. Training attendances were fantastic with regularly over 25 attendees, accountability was always reported in, and the boys more importantly pushed each other to succeed. Winning 16 out of 18 home and away games and a Premiership is an outstanding effort.

One of the major highlights for the year was the round 8 clash with Ormond. With 7 minutes to go we found ourselves 22 points down. From somewhere the St.Bede’s boys found something amazing and were able to kick 4 unanswered goals to win by 2 points. I believe this was the point of the season where the playing group really adopted a sense of belief about how successful they could be. The players learnt a lot about each others character in this game and demonstrated amazing spirit.

Another major highlight was the round 15 clash with our huge rival Oakleigh. Oakleigh has had our measure for the past 2 seasons having beaten us 4 times by an average of 11 goals a game. The lead up to this game was like a final – training was intense / players were nervous but at the same time there was a real feel of confidence about the boys. The game would have to be one of the real quality under 19 games I have ever been involved in, let alone seen. The lead changed several times throughout the day and their were intriguing contests occurring allover the ground. At ¾ time The St.Bedes Boys were 3 goals down. With 2 minutes to go we were 4 points down and then Sam L’Hullier kicked an excellent crumbing goal to win the game. It was like a huge weight had been lifted of every ones shoulders and that sense of belief of what we could achieve this season grew bigger.

The third major highlight was obviously the Finals series. The second Semi-Final win was nearly a complete performance – we planned well, trained well, prepared well And carried out our game style effectively. We jumped Oakleigh early and never looked in trouble throughout the day. Excellent performances by the team and special efforts on the day by the Swayne boys, Andrews, L’Hullier, Bodinaar, Neville, Browney and Tobin. With the week off we were able to study our opposition for the Grand Final – Ormond.

Grand Final day and the lead up to it was a little different to what I expected. The playing group was very relaxed throughout the week. The nerves and the mistakes that sometimes come with pressure were not visible as can often be the case in big games. We were lucky enough to have Allan Jeans motivate the boys on the Wednesday which was a fantastic experience for all those their to see such a credentialed man who has done this at the elite level so many times. The feel on game day was calm and composed in the rooms, you could sense the boys were ready and more importantly were hungry to get out there and play selfless football for each other. Once again we were able to jump Ormond and maintain a steady lead all day that was never under threat. The playing group should be so proud of their efforts and the style of football they produce to win big games. They are disciplined, they share, they stay composed, they take risks and learn from the risk if it doesn’t come off and most importantly they love playing with each other and putting their bodies on the line for each other. WHAT A SUPERB RESULT FROM A SUPERB GROUP OF YOUNG MEN – THOUROUGHLY DESERVED. Special mention on Grand Final day to Dean Francis and his Best on Ground award.

A big thankyou must go to the leadership group in Captain Rob Swayne and his deputies Brendan Neville, Alex Falkiner, and Mark Geshke. Rob led the side admirably on game days and at training, his input into team selection and thoughts on plans and tactics was greatly appreciated. I really enjoyed watching Rob develop into a fine leader and player this year – his efforts to win the

Under 19 section 3 Best and Fairest was outstanding. Brendan should be acknowledged for his selection in the VAFA Under 19 representative team that journeyed to Queensland to play on the GABBA earlier in the season. Brendan was named as one of the best players in the game.

Another big thankyou must go to all the supporters and parents who helped out this season. Paul Tobin did an amazing job as Team Manager completing all the little jobs on game day that make the Coaches job so much easier. Gerry and Rhiannon as our trainers were terrific in preparing and looking after the players during the week and especially on game day. Greg L’Huillier was a great help not just as team runner but also as assistant coach. These people are very selfless in their time and effort they give to the team and the club and this should be acknowledged as they were so vital to our success this year.

Congratulations must go to the award winners namely Brendan Neville (Best and Fairest), Rob Swayne (Runner Up B & F), Mark Geshke (Coaches Award) Claye Tobin (Most Consistent), Mitch Bodinaar (leading Goalkicker – 87 goals) and Justin Swayne (Best player in the finals). Well done boys on excellent seasons.

I would like to wish all the under 19 boys who move up to the seniors next year the best of luck. These boys are vitally important to the future of the club and I hope the majority of these boys will challenge themselves next year. To the boys who have another season of under 19’s ahead of them I hope you all get onboard again in 2007 and join me and each other in a more challenging environment in Section 2 football. We had a great deal of fun this year and with an increased work ethic and desire to succeed, 2007 promises to be very enjoyable.

Finally I would like to thank the club and especially Matt Beasley for giving me an opportunity to coach the Under 19’s. I have enjoyed working with the coaching staff and committee and I am looking forward to developing future senior players for the club next year.

Club XVIIIs Team Report

This season saw the introduction of a Club 18 team in the VAFA.

As it continues to grow within the Ammo's ranks the Club 18 concept is a competition that gives the opportunity to senior players who for a variety of reasons struggle to commit weekly to the rigours of training and playing. Offering a reduced home and away season of 14 games plus finals the idea of fielding a team has been bandied around for several years.

With an influx of new recruits this season the decision was made to field a team in the competition. We made a tough decision to enter with a baptism of fire by filling a vacancy in the top grade of the three tiered system. With no disillusions that it certainly be a tough season the boys under the leadership of Marc Mifsud enjoyed a fantastic year. With one of the youngest teams the Clubbies enjoyed two wins and several near misses as they either played home games at Southern Rd and Brindisi St. This win loss ratio will improve as the team consolidates and recruits a couple of key position players.

The introduction of this team has been a substantial step forward for our club. It has significantly boosted our club membership base and importantly allowed the Under 19 team supporters and players the opportunity to have a curtain raiser played prior to their match. More importantly it has given the opportunity for a group of terrific guys the chance to play footy for the Tigers. I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of some of the contributors who made the first year of the Clubbies an outstanding success. To coach Mark Mifsud well done "Miffa". When we were scratching our heads pre season saying " yes we have got a team, but we need a coach" you walked in and were handed the reigns. A sensational performance by a true tiger man.

When David L'Huillier was unfortunately injured yet again, he put up his dodgy hand and volunteered to team manage the side. Dave your devotion to the job went beyond what would ordinarily be expected of a team manager. In one of the most difficult roles to fulfil this season you excelled. To Blair Hutchinson who looked right at home in the white coat behind the goals and everyone who officiated or manned the BBQ post game thank you very much. Finally I would like to formally congratulate my old mate Matt McCraw for finally shaking the perennial bridesmaid's title when he was judged the Clubbies Best and Fairest.

JUNIOR TEAM SEASON SUMMARIES Under 17 (Division 1)

What a fantastic year for the club and the U\17’s. We played some great attacking football during the home and away season which resulted in us winning 11 out of 13 games played. In the two games that went against us we finished with 16 players on the field and only lost by less than 3 goals.

Finishing on top of the ladder was a great stepping stone for a finals campaign that saw us win the Second Semi against St Pauls and progress to the grand final. The grand final was a fantastic game between two quality teams us and Beaumaris. Both sides had great respect for eachothers ability and new that they had to play well to win. Both teams were strengthened by some quality inclusions for the granny. In the end the best team won and we took out the premiership. Just rewards for a group of players that stuck together all year, showed great character when under pressure, listened to instructions and most of all enjoyed there football. Grand Final score: St Bedes Mentone Tigers 18.11 defeated Beaumaris 14.8

The premiership would not have been possible if wasn’t for the fantastic work that the players parents did throughout the year to ensure that they took the field. As a first year coach I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive group of parents, so to them thankyou. 2006 Award winners. (listed below)150 Games players : Adam Zagami, Scott Hobson, Steve Cahill. The U17 Best and Fairest night was fitting finale to a fantastic season. A great celebration of the football the boys had played in there junior years and the friendships they had made. Hopefully this can become an annual event as it is a great concept. Thanks again to everyone from the club that helped out during the season and made this an extremely enjoyable time for all involved. Tim Beasley.

Under 16 (Division 2)

After a flying start and winning the first two games, we had an early setback losing the next three games.

However under new coach Brendan Neville (Under 19 player), the team lifted and went on to win eight out of the next ten games to reach the finals.

In a thrilling finish to the Elimination Final against Ormond, the team hung on to win by six points. It was very pleasing to receive an email from the Ormond Coach Wayne Holdsworth (Club Development Manager for Football Victoria) complimenting our Coach, Captain Jamie Neville-Young and our team on their sportsmanship. In another close result in the 2nd Semi-Final, the team lost to St. Peters by seven points but showed great heart and commitment, giving their all which was the way they played all season. It is great to see the players forming strong friendships after a number of years together and the way they welcomed eight new players into the squad.

In his first year as Coach, Brendan formed a strong bond with all the players and inspired them to achieve their individual potential. Brendan’s emphasis on team rather than individual performance, his rotation of the bench to involve all players (most games we had 23/24 players), the warm-up’s before games, two nights of training, one minute of silent focusing before each game were highlights of his performance!

The team was fortunate to have strong encouragement from their families who provided excellent off-field support on match days. A special thank- you to Steve Zagami, who provided great support to the coach and team in a variety of roles.

Having tasted the finals, the team is determined to go further next year and we are confident that most of the players will return next season to achieve their goal.Sharan Talbot.

Under 15 (Division 2)

The year started with the struggle to get two teams on the field, having of 32 players. Not enough for two teams, and too many for one.

With a couple of weeks prior to the opening game, it was decided to run with one, as after a recruitment drive, couldn’t get the numbers up.

We implemented a roster system and a game time alternating plan, which Tom Green managed and spent most match days with his head buried in the chart.

Matt Goodman and Mick Meehan were elected captains by the playing group and what two outstanding blokes and leaders they showed themselves to be.Both led by example on and off the field and are truly great footballers.

We travelled through the home and away season without a loss and were certainly hot favourite’s to go all the way. That was until, the second semi, which we lost to Cheltenham who seemed to have grown an extra foot and played outstanding footy. This was a major blow to everyone’s confidence and took some rebuilding to make sure we all came up for the preliminary final the following week.

The boys, to their credit lifted, won the preliminary final to set us up for Cheltenham, again, for the Grand Final.

The Grand Final, with Cheltenham’s confidence riding high was sure to be a tough encounter. We hit the ground running in the first quarter and led by some 4 goals at the first break.Cheltenham fought hard in the 2nd quarter and belted us around the ears a bit, but our guys stood up when it was needed and simply just played footy. We ran out victorious, holding the premiership cup which this group of guys had fought so long and hard for, most of them playing since U9’s, with no little or no finals success. It was a fantastic moment for the boys and their families.

Congratulations to all the players on a magnificent season.

Congratulations to the guys for the following awards----Dale Foley – Best and FairestMick Meehan – Runner up Best and Fairest / MSJFL League Best and FairestMatt Goodman – Runner up Best and Fairest

Under 14 (Division 1)

The season looked promising for our Under 14 Team with 24 players under Coach Andrew Cleverley. Practise Match form had been sound and the players approached the season in a positive mindset. ●Round 1 saw the team travel to Ormond. In a fairly even tussle SBMT drew away in the last quarter to win 10.7.67 to 6.10.46. Best Players were even across the board with Chris Roggero, Josh Green, Luke Hull & Michael Mindelis the standouts. ●Round 2 had SBMT pitted against arch rival St Peters at Southern Rd. In a fairly physical and sometimes spiteful game, St Peters suffered for their lack of onfield discipline with 3 players sent off in the last quarter, allowing SBMT to get home by 8 points, 8.13.61 to 7.11.53. Best Players were Chris Roggero, Josh Green, Lochie Doyle & Daniel Garside. ●Round 3 saw newly promoted East Sandringham coming to Southern Road. In a shock result, the Sandringham boys had all the answers on the day, making our boys look very slow and lethargic. Final Scores East Sandringham 8.10.58 d. SBMT 3.11.29. Best Players were Callum Byrnes, Michael Mindelis & Josh Green. ●Round 4 was against Oakleigh Dragons at their ground. In a free flowing, high standard match, Oakleigh held on to win by 13 points, 11.7.73 to 9.6.60. Best Players were Lachie Doyle, Chris Roggero, James Mason & Callan Douglas. Our season imploded off the field in the week following the Oakleigh match. Without rehashing the issues that unfolded during the week, the end result was Andrew Cleverley deciding that he could know longer continue in his role as the U/14’s Coach. His stance was supported by his Assistants Marco Roggero, Dean Amon & Team Manager Judy Cleverley. ●Round 5 vs East Brighton at Southern Rd. As players arrived at the ground for the match, information about the drama during the week started to filter through. Junior President Steve Zagami appointed an interim Coach, Matt Quinn, to take over the helm until some of the issues could be sorted out. Our players took to the field but it was certainly hard for them to concentrate on the game given what had happened in the

lead up. East Brighton won 21.23.149 to SBMT 8.3.51. Best Players were Lochie Doyle, Tom Garside, Chris Roggero, Josh Green & James Mason. ●Round 6 saw Matt Quinn continue in his interim role as Coach. SBMT welcomed Ormond to Southern Rd and proceeded to give them an absolute thrashing, 11.12.78 to 1.5.11. A week is a long time in football. Best Players were Josh Green, Tom & Dan Garside, Michael Mindelis & Sam Amon. ●Round 7 saw the appointment of Phil Scott at Coach for the remainder of the season. The team was rocked with the news of the transfer of Chris Roggero, Callum Douglas & Dustin Mills to other clubs as fallout from Andrew Cleverley’s departure continued. On the morning of the match against Beaumaris at their ground, we were further weakened by the disastrous news that Daniel Garside had broken a bone in his arm and would be a long term injury. Callum Byrnes failed to arrive and we were suddenly looking at the bare 18 players taking the field. The players found it very difficult to cope with the off field dramas and we were soundly beaten by Beaumaris 26.13.169 to 2.4.16. Best Players were Hartley McLean, Sam Amon & Lochie Doyle. ●Round 8 was played in the 1st week of the school holidays. 8 players were away on holidays when we fronted up at Southern Rd to play St Pauls Bentleigh. We took the field with 11 regular Under 14’s and 3 Under 13’s (Steve Zagami, Joe Bova & Tom Cahill). St Paul’s were allowed to field 15 players and had 5 on the interchange. In a free flowing game with lots of room to run, our boys fought a gallant battle but could not withstand the constant pressure of fresh legs and went down gamely 9.8.62 to St Pauls 25.16.166. Best Players were James Mason, Luke Hull, Tom Maley, Tom Hurst, Michael Seeber & Michael Mindelis. ●Round 9 had us playing St Peters at their ground. With a number of boys still away on holidays, we ventured out with 15 players, allowing St Peters to field 16 players. The first half was not pretty to watch and we were soundly beaten in just about every position. Thankfully the boys lifted their heads after ½ time and we cut their scoring right down to finish the game St Peters 18.22. 130 to SBMT 1.5.11. Best Players were Tom Garside, Sam Amon, Michael Mindelis & Josh Green. ●Round 10 saw us playing East Sandringham at their ground. The mood was positive as we looked forward to fielding 18 players for the first time in weeks. We welcomed Dylan Simpson back to the fold after a 2 year absence. Unfortunately we failed to get a full side on the park and again the pain of having to play against extra numbers weighed heavily on the boys. The first half was a terrible display of undisciplined footy as East Sandringham ran riot. At half time, buoyed with the arrival of Josh Green and fielding a full side, we outscored East Sandringham in the 2nd half but the final score was a tragic 17.10.112 to 3.12.30. Best Players were James Mason, Hartley McLean & Tom Hurst. ●Round 11 welcomed Oakleigh to Southern Rd. In a very spirited and physical encounter, the Dragons were too strong for us on the day but it was our best performance for many weeks. The lack of scoreboard pressure continued to weigh us down. Final Scores were Oakleigh Dragons 14.28.112 to SBMT 2.11.23. Best Players were James Mason, Tim Nixon, Tiernan Ravesi , Tom Garside & Sam Amon. ●Round 12 had us playing East Brighton at Hurlingham Park. We were assisted on the day by Dale Foley from the Under 15 ‘s and Steve Zagami & Tom Cahill from the Under 13’s. We attacked brilliantly in the 1st quarter, only to see 6 points on the board at the end of the quarter. Hartley McLean was quite ill and had to relinquish the key defence role at CHB. Dean Saunders copped a knee to the back and could hardly run. East Brighton suddenly went up a notch and in the last quarter it became a goal fest as we could no longer hold back a much stronger outfit. Final Score East Brighton 21.19.145 to SBMT 2.10.22 Best Players were Tom Garside, Dale Foley, James Mason, Sam Amon & Michael Mindelis. ●Round 13 saw us at Ormond for the 2nd time this season. We welcomed the return of Daniel Garside back from injury and looked forward to fielding 18 players. Unfortunately Michael Mindelis could not make the trip and we took to the field with 17 players. Dean Saunders was extremely restricted by his sore back from the week before and suddenly we were looking down the barrel of another hiding. Ormond raced off to a match winning lead, going in at ½ time with 12 goals to Nil. Needless to say a few things were said during the break and the boys came out to play in the 2nd half, outscoring Ormond 7 goals to 5 with 17 players, 2 of them severely hampered by injury. Agreat fightback in that ½ of football. Final Scores: Ormond 17.17.119 to SBMT 7.9.51. Best Players were Sam Amon, Tom Garside, Dale Foley, Luke Hull & Lochie Doyle. ●Round 14 had us hosting Beaumaris at Southern Rd. With our 3 Under 13 guests (Hanson, Bova & Cahill) playing, we started the game with 20 players. The players were just rapped to be on a level playing field and took it right up to Beaumaris. It was a great game, fast & physical and our players earnt their opponents respect on the day. Final scores saw Beaumaris 12.16.88 defeat SBMT 5.9.39. Best Players were James Mason, Dylan Simpson, Dan & Tom Garside & Hartley McLean. ●Round 15. Our final game! Thank heavens a lot would say, but finally we knew that we would be fielding a full strength Under 14 side against St Pauls Bentleigh at their Tucker Rd ground. They had beaten us by 104 points in our last meeting but we

knew that was not going to happen again. In a superb opening quarter, kicking with a strong breeze, our forwards notched up 6.6 to 1 goal to put the pressure on our opponents. In the 2nd quarter we equalled their score kicking into the wind and in the 3rd we raced away again. Restricting them to 2 goals in the last quarter we won our final match 15.15.105 to 5.10.40. Best Players were the whole team but standouts on the day were James Mason, Tim Nixon, Luke Hull, Tom Hurst , Dan & Tom Garside and Sam Amon. It was great to finish on such a positive note and the things that standout for me are the strength of these guys mateship and their steely resolve to keep going even when everything seemed to be going against them. We have seen some wonderful development in players who have had very limited game time in previous seasons and it is to these 20 players that we say “Well done, you’ve earnt the rest”. Special thanks to Steve Zagami for finding us players in our hour of need. To Chris Seeber, Matt Quinn & Dave Saunders for their job in the Coach’s box and to Carmen Maley for her enthusiasm in the Team Managers role. Thank you to all those parents who volunteered for game day chores, be it Goal Umpiring, Time Keeping, Boundary Umpire, Umpires Escort, bringing the Oranges or helping in the Canteen. Thank you so much. Phil Scott

Under 13 (East)

The Under 13 East team of 2006 had an outstanding season achieving a number of significant milestones culminating in an East Division Grand Final win.

The Club welcomed new players Jonathon Russo (St Peters), Chris Smout and Scott Scheldrick (Mordi Brae), Ben Wighton (East Bentleigh) and first year player Tom Jones to the team - it was pleasing to see how well each player (and parents) settled into their new team and Club.

As in the 2005 season, each player had an opportunity to vote who they wanted as their leaders and congratulations are in order to the following players who were selected and who throughout the season conducted themselves in a sportsman like manner - Captain Cameron Hansen, Vice Captain Kevin Cevec and Deputy Vice Captains Lloyd Misso.

The team won an amazing 13 of the 14 home and away games and finished two games ahead and % on top of the ladder - our only loss for the season was against St Peters who came back from a 5 goal half time deficit to win the game.

The team played St Peters in the Semi Final and as most would know St Peters have had the wood over us in the last few years however with a 17 point win against St Peters in our last home and away game we were confident that we would be very competitive but didn't expect to win by such a big margin to get a week rest and go straight through to the Grand Final - St Bedes 11.10.76 defeated St Peters 1.4.10.

Grand Final Day

What a great day for the players, officials, parents, supporters and the Club - getting to a Grand Final let alone winning it is a significant achievement and the entire team is to be congratulated for the way they approached the game and in the end our 1st quarter performance of 5 unanswered goals set the team up for a memorable win over arch rival Beaumaris - St Bedes 9.1.55 defeated Beaumaris 4.3.27.

Every player contributed to the win and the Teams continued improvement over the past five years culminating in this years Grand Final success. Congratulations to Steve Zagami for being judged by the umpires as St Bedes best player.

For full details of the premiership please refer to the table below.

Again, I most impressed with the way in which each player and parent represented the team and the club throughout the season - we can certainly hold our heads high in this respect!! On a personnel note, I was proud of each and every player for the way in which they applied themselves at training and each game and you thoroughly deserve your success which is something that you will cherish and be able to call on in future years.

My sincere thanks and gratitude are again extended to our runner Noel Fitzgibbon who continued to provide fantastic support to the players and myself throughout the season - thanks Noel!! - to Tony Bova for his trainer assistance throughout the season including some great half time "pep talks" and a big thank you to our two Team Managers, Colin Thompson and Jim Cevec who kept the team admin in check and provided excellent support to me throughout the season - these guys are definitely the best Team Managers in the Club and I'm sure that they will enjoy a well earned rest next season and perhaps they may get an opportunity to watch Will and Kevin play.

Finally, thanks to the many parents who helped with canteen, umpire escort, time keeper, oranges etc… your support is greatly appreciated!!

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!! well done boys and I wish you the best in your future football pursuits - I will be watching from the sidelines with keen interest.

At the beginning of season 2006 the boys were all quite happy and appreciative to be individually fitted with new light weight jumpers This is a characteristic of this group of boys who seem just happy to be playing football. With twenty-eight players on the list three boys had to be rostered off each week. There was minimal discontent about this or the fact that this left seven players on the bench each week. The boys were team focused and accepted the game day rotations.

Having enjoyed their football but won only two games the previous season expectations were not overly high .New coach Peter Laskey asserted his authority early. Training nights were very well attended and enjoyed by all .As time passed Peters positive coaching methods began to reap some

rewards and the team begun to string a few wins together. Before we knew it the home and away season was over and we were fourth on the ladder and in the finals.

After strong showings in the semi and preliminary finals we reached the Grand Final. Grand Final day came .The parents and supporters were excited .The boys were happy to be there. Banners were erected, video cameras whirred, the boys threw all they had at an undefeated East Sandringham .It wasn’t enough. We started the season with our first practice match on the 2nd April with a very full list of players, 28 in total and of those 28 we had four new recruits, Jackson, Beau, Sam and Jordan, these boys fitted in extremely well and improved on their footy skills each week.

This season saw seven of our finest young men achieve 50 games for the club. Jake Beddoe, Jordan Bichsel, Pat Nixon, Jimmy Colyvan , Ash Chand, Ned Griffin and Daniel Bova. This is a wonderful achievement for an under 11s team, well done boys.

Our team regularly took part in the Sunday night gatherings and made the Suausage Sizzle night on the 4th of June a great success, all parents pitched in and made it a fun night for everyone.

Even though we did not make the finals the boys certainly did improved from week to week. All boys achieved great things this year with our overall best and fairest player voted as Jordan Bichsel.

We thank Ivan Bichsel for his efforts coaching our boys this year, we all know the time and effort that is put in by coaches to ensure the team gets on the field and enjoys themselves while developing their skills.

We are looking forward with great anticipation to the 2007 season. Go Tigers!!Lynette Lyddiard

Twenty seven enthusiastic boys started the season off on 23rd April. From the outset our goals were simply to have fun and improve the boy’s skills whilst giving even game time to all.

We know at this level we don’t judge the season performance by the number of wins. Out of 14 home and away games the boys managed to win only 2 but were very competitive in most games. Other than our win in Game 2 of the Lightening Premiership, the season highlight had to be round

5 against Oakleigh Dragons where a spirited come from behind win and contributions from the whole team lead to a stirring victory. Playing in the EAST level we came across strong opposition however the boys always played proudly representing their club in a sporting manner.

Best and Fairest this year went to Daniel Moloney, Runner Up Patrick Hurst, Most Improved to Sam Upton, Best Team Player Alex Boulton, Most Courageous To Andrew Watterson and Coaches award to Julian Lam.

We thank parents filling in the weekly positions and recognising each week the spirit of having fun and improving the boy’s skills.

Finally we thank our Coach John Deppe, Runner Mark O’Conner who both gave the boys fun and improved skills and the Executive Committee of the club, particularly Steve Zagami for his ongoing support.

Under 9 Red (East)

Another season has come to the end for the Under 9’s with some great football played by the boys. The club has produced some big wins this year, well-deserved ones at that, and our under 9 boys were no exception. They played some terrific football and their love for the game was evident every week. At the start of the season, parents reported the enthusiasm of the lads who were chomping at the bit to start training.

However, the season proved to be a bit harder than we expected, as we were slotted in to East division, which was two levels above the previous year. Nonetheless, the boys stuck to their guns all season, never letting the club down on or off the field.

Our coaches, John Taylor and Anthony Pickles, put aside their busy schedules and gave so much of their time to the team. Everyone involved in this team appreciated their generosity, patience and commitment to the boys. Dave ‘Fireman” Saunders was also a great help as skills coach and trainer. Rod Bryant offered support by taking on many jobs as required. Word has it that he has put his hand up to coach the Under 10’s next year and we wish him every success.

Special thanks to the parents who were fantastic and gave assistance with those extra footy duties whenever asked. Kath Barca and Lyn Saunders were generous ladies who organised the half-time refreshments for our thirsty cubs.

No flag this year but watch out for this team in the under 10 competition. With their love of the game, and the support of the club, our boys should experience the same fortune that our senior sides had this year. Best of luck for 2007 boys and thanks for all your hard work.Liam McWeeney

Under 9 Blue (South) The club's newest team, the Under 9 North team, consisted of a group of very happy & enthusiastic boys aged primarily 7 and 8 years of age. Only one of the group had payed competive football before, although most of the boys had progressed through the club's Auskick program. The team

was coached by Damian Harriss. Stephen Gallagher was team Manager, Nick Brennan was runner, and our trainer was Terry Evans, with assistance from Shane Steegstra from time to time. From the outset we made it clear to the boys that the main goal of the season was not to win games but to teach them about some of the basics of football, help them in developing their skills, and most of all, have fun & enjoy their footy. Although placed in the League's most junior Under 9 division, we came up against some bigger and more experienced teams and suffered some heavy losses throughout the season. Nevertheless the boys were competitive throughout, and stayed positive and happy even after our losses. Our breakthrough win came at Brindisi Street in Round 11, when the boys put on a great display to score a 22 point victory over St Paul's in front of a large and vocal home crowd. Both the boys and parents were absolutely delirious after a winless season to date, and the boys celebrated by dunking their coach, yours truly, in the very muddy patch in the centre of the ground at the end of the game. Various mothers were even seen to shed tears of joy. The boys' performance then went to another level and we had an exciting, narrow loss to East Brighton at Southern Road the following week when playing with only 17 players, and we then went into the Lighting Premiership a week later and won our first match (against St Pauls), lost our second game to East Sandringham, and then had a narrow loss against St Pauls who turned the tables on us in the last match. The Lighting Premiership was a wonderful day as we were blessed with great weather and a very happy bunch of boys, parents, grandparents and other enthusiastic supporters. Other highlights of the season included a Friday night match at Brindisi St against local rival Beaumaris, which caused great excitement for the boys, and a few keenly contested games of soccer at training during the 2006 World Cup in Germany, to get the boys into the spirit of that and to enjoy playing another code with their mates. All of the boys appeared to very much enjoy their first season of competitive football and were disappointed when the season came to an end. Sadly, we will be losing 6 to 8 of our older boys to the Under 10s next year but we are very confident that we shall retain the great majority of our other boys who are bound to further develop their football skills having had the benefit of their first season of footy under their belts. All of the boys received a trophy and certificate at the end of the season. Our Best & Fairest award went to Don D'Aquino, Runner up Best & Fairest to Will Burmeister and third Best & Fairest to Robbie Evans. All of these boys had terrific, stand-out seasons and we congratulate them on their awards. We record our special thanks and appreciation for the very generous donation of the trophies to Mr Brett Randall (Sean's Dad) and his partner Rod of Hunt Heating in Braeside. Thanks to their generosity, each boy has been awarded a very impressive trophy that they will be able to cherish forever as a memeto of their first season of Aussie Rules football.   My thanks also go the many parents of the team who made my first year as a coach so enjoyable and fulfilling, but in particular I wish to thank Stephen Gallagher, who did an absolutely first-rate job as Team Manager, Nick Brennan whose enthusiastic job as our runner each week was just brilliant, and Terry Evans & Shane Steegstra who performed their very important jobs as trainer very well. Thanks also to all those parents who did other jobs such as providing oranges, voting, canteen duty, etc. Thanks also go to Steve Zagami and Peter Corboy for their fantastic support of the team throughout the season. Steve very kindly donated 24 brand new footballs that were awarded on a weekly basis to our players and they were gratefully received and I'm sure given a great workout in the weeks and months that followed.
