‘Amazing Grace’ and the task of living our faith more deeply

“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.

I once was lost, but now am found;was blind, but now I see.”

Whether Catholic, Orthodox or Protestant, nearly every American

Chrisan knows John Newton’s beauful hymn, “Amazing Grace.”

Believers have sung it for more than 200 years. Its words and melody

speak to one of the deepest insncts of the human heart: the need for

deliverance. Like St. Augusne before him, Newton discovered that

“our hearts are restless unl they rest in (God).”

A former slave trader, Newton converted to Chrisanity during a

storm on the Atlanc. He later became one of the leading Chrisan

evangelizers of his day in England as an Anglican priest. But he never

forgot his role in the slave trade. He spent the rest of his life repenng

for it and preaching against it. He understood from direct experience

that real personal conversion must have broader consequences. If we

claim to love God, then we need to prove it with our acons. Slavery,

Newton saw, violated human dignity in a profound way.

Newton did more than write a memorable hymn, however. His life

had a huge impact on others among them the son of a wealthy

merchant named William Wilberforce. Like Newton, Wilberforce

underwent his own Chrisan conversion. He took Newton’s

anslavery message into Parliament in 1789, where he became the

leading voice against slavery for the next 18 years. Largely because of

Wilberforce, England abolished the slave trade throughout its empire

in 1807 the same year Newton died.

Last year, the story of William Wilberforce and John Newton

opened in theaters throughout the United States in the new film by

Walden Media, “Amazing Grace.” It’s a compelling movie; a beaufully

wri<en, acted and directed portrait of a man Wilberforce on fire

with his faith and its consequences. Inspired by Newton, Wilberforce

literally reshaped the conscience of the modern world. Walden Media

is the same company that brought the wonderful “Chronicles of

Narnia” to the screen in 2005. It’s easy to recommend a film like

“Amazing Grace” because the story is so powerful and so very well

done. But it’s also an ideal source of personal reflecon as we begin

our own journey of Lent.

As long as we have breath, God offers us the chance for repentance

and conversion, and through them, a path to eternal life in Jesus

Christ. St. Paul, St. Augusne and St. Ignaus all took that path. So did

William Wilberforce and a selfdescribed former slaver and “wretch”

like John Newton. In fact, every Chrisan man or woman who takes

the Gospel seriously must walk the same road.

Safe wherever we go. Grant us summertime refreshment,

devoted to one another. Like Abraham and Sarah,

WHAT IS YOUR CATHOLIC IQ?

St. Anthony of Padua is remembered on June 13. He was born in

Lisbon, Portugal in 1195 and died in Padua, Italy in 1231. He was

a Catholic priest and friar of the Franciscan Order. One of many

stories about Anthony: he had a book of psalms that was very

important to him because it had notes he made to use teaching

students in the Franciscan Order. One of the novices decided to

leave the Order and took the psalter. Anthony prayed and both the

novice and the book returned. He is the patron saint for:

a) lost things c) travelers

b) Vocaons d) wring

Why do we do that? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED

Queson: Why do we celebrate the Hearts of Jesus in the month of

June?

Answer: Devo!on to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is an ancient prac-

!ce. We can see its Scriptural origins in Jesus' own references to His

Heart. "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will

give you rest ? for I am meek and humble of heart" (c.f. MaChew

11:28, 29).

The devo!on received a surge of popularity in the late 1600s. Jesus

appeared several !mes to a French religious sister, St. Margaret

Mary Alacoque, poin!ng to his heart. During this !me, the Jansenist

heresy had risen in France, which preached limited predes!na!on

for salva!on. When appearing to Margaret Mary, Jesus affirmed his

love for all mankind: "Behold the Heart which has so loved men that

it has spared nothing." He asked for a special feast celebra!ng his

Sacred Heart on the Friday following the feast of Corpus Chris!.

Over !me, June has become known as the month of Sacred Heart.

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEKA kingdom divided against itself cannot

stand. Is the kingdom of your soul divided?

We are oUen confronted with choices that

appear to be good but in essence are not.

We struggle with choosing good over evil

and right from wrong. Conflicts oUen exist

within, and we walk through life with a

divided heart. We realize what is needed to

live with God but find ourselves doing the

exact opposite. As we gather with our

brothers and sisters and seek God's giU of

Christ in the Eucharist, may we not only be

united with one another in faith but united

with God within. All conflicts and divisions

can cease, and we can act with a focused,

strong, and determined heart.
