Medical University of Łódź (MUL) as a merger of Medical Academy and Military Medical Academy was

established on 1 October 2002 by the act of Polish Parliament.

Military Medical Academy had a long, almost fifty year history of training medical students-candidates for

army doctors, with total output of nearly 6000 graduates physicians-medical officers. At present, majority of

the teacher’s staff of the former Military Medical Academy compose the teaching personnel of the Military

Medical Faculty continuing the tradition of training medical students for the army. Within the structure of the

Faculty there are Division of Medical Studies in the English Language, Division of Physiotherapy and Defense

Education Centre which organize military training for the students. The Military Medical Faculty employs more

than three hundred educational staff including over two hundred medical doctors and 40 medical professors-

top scientists and clinicians, and, beside teaching typical medical program we run military training for medical

officers. To improve the educational activity of our Faculty we cooperate with Military Center for Medical

Training where our students get their military medical practices.

The Faculty can run the military medical training for foreigner students from NATO member states. The

training can be based mainly on the Division of Medical Studies in the English Language

At the Medical University of Łódź, programs in English run from 2003/2004.

International demand for highly qualified medical staff as well as requirements of global market in the field of

higher education determined Rector and Senate of MUL to make decisions which facilitated teaching in English.

Presently over 300 students attend all three medical programs.

MUL’s offer to study medicine and dentistry in English is addressed to students regardless of country they are

living or coming from. Candidates have to meet respective admission criteria which depend on the program they

choose to study. Thus 4-year MD program is designed for college/university graduates i.e. all those candidates

who whish to pursue the American model of medical education. Such candidates should have completed their

pre-medical education in the following subjects:

general chemistry (8 credits)

organic chemistry (8 credits)

biology ( 8 credits)

physics (8 credits)

It is important for candidates from the USA and Canada that medical programs in English carried by MUL are

on the list of International Medical Education Directory (IMED) which make our students eligible to sit for

three-phase American licensing exams – USMLE administered by Educational Commission for Foreign Medical

Graduates (ECFMG).

For candidates being high school graduates we offer 6 year MD program . Such candidates should demonstrate

sound knowledge in basic science courses comprising biology, chemistry and physics evidenced on respective

school graduation documents. Exactly the same requirements have to be met by candidates who want to study

dentistry in the frame of the 5 year DMD program.

MUL offer is addressed to all future students who have achieved linguistic skills proved by such English

certificates like IELTS or TOEFL, preferably.

It is worth mentioning that diplomas conferred by MUL are recognized in all EU countries.

We encourage all potential candidates to visit our website:

and make good decision to choose education at state-of-the-art level, in prestigious university and in friendly,

multinational atmosphere.

The military medical subjects include:

Military surgery called ,,field surgery” is a complex discipline that has progressed far beyond triage and the

debridement of battle wounds. Even the trauma specialist will face significant differences and difficulties treating

war wounds in field hospitals. The surgical management of war wounds continues to require a solid foundation

in general surgery training and experience, plus additional specific training in wartime surgery. The aim of war

surgery is to achieve the return of the greatest number of injured to combat and the preservation of life, limb,

and eyesight. Because hemorrhage is the most common cause of death in military trauma, airway preservation

and effective control of bleeding represent the highest priorities in war injuries. Wound excision (the so-called

debridement) is a significant part in the management of war injuries. It involves excision of all foreign objects

and contaminants and dead/nonviable tissue that, if not removed, would become a medium for infection. Broad-

spectrum antibiotics should be administered and tetanus prophylaxis measures should be taken, as indicated.

Delayed wound closure (usually after 4-5 days) is the standard procedure after wound excision.

The evolution of modern warfare now demands that the combat surgeon be knowledgeable in military tactics,

logistics, transport of personnel, trauma surgery, tropical medicine, public health, industrial medicine, and

special weapons, as well as have a familiarity with the organizational structure and culture of the military

services.

Department of Thoracic Surgery, General & Onocological Surgery in Lodz has considerable experience in the

field of war surgery and the people who are professionally prepared to do their jobs appropriately. Since 1957

in our department a great number of students, surgeons and other specialists have been educated. Thanks

to the studies their knowledge has been improved in this area. The subject called military surgery run in the

Medical University of Lodz is supposed to prepare future surgeons and doctors specializing in other diseases

to work in the conditions of the theaters of war, particularly regarding the response to mass casualties, blast

and fragmentation injuries, and resuscitation of casualties in austere environments, likely resonate strongly

with civilian trauma surgeons in the current era. Recently, changes in the dogma of war necessitated significant

changes in the organization schema of military services supporting modern military operations. The concept

of highly mobile, easily deployed, forward surgical facilities is the most important change in the philosophy

of modern war injury. Military surgeons are now facing new challenges; appropriate education is required to

achieve success in their mission.

combine the knowledge of internal medicine and military medicine. Field Internal Medicine involves specific

rules of diagnosis and treatment in combat environments and general guidance of Force Health Protection

during peacetime and wartime. The students will know the special conditions of work of military physicians,

the four level of care, organization of military combat health support system, and will be prepared for leading

different types of medical units such as medical platoon, medical company and provide medical care during

military operations.

Main topics. Medical aspects of NBC weapon. Medical aspects of harsh environments. Deployment and Post-

Deployment Health Protection during crisis response operations. Guidance and management of internal

medicine in tactical scenarios: casualty tactical triage, Tactical Combat casualty Care, Battlefield Advanced

Trauma Life Support, Damage Control Resuscitation, MEDEVAC Intensive Care Units, Postoperative care. Force

Health Protection during peacetime and wartime.

Practical exercises: Medical planning, Medical Intelligence, determining the population at risk, assuming the

population of diseases and combat injures, calculation of medical assets in specific tactical situations, the

practical work in Level 1 and Level 2 MTF’s.

The aim of teaching is to introduce to the student basic concepts of:

possibility of using biological weapon, national safety in connection with using biological weapon, international

safety in connection with using biological weapon.

Geneva protocol from 1925 - prohibition of using biological factors, prohibition of scientific research on the

weapon using and production. The meaning of smallpox virus and Bacillus antracis in bioterrorism. Classification

of factors potentially useful as biological weapon. Description of ‘new infections’ (SARS, WNV). Scientists versus

biological weapon. Strategies of defense. The role of family doctors in biological attack’s recognition.

organization of force health protection and public health

leads training activities for military medical students and postgraduate courses for army doctors and run

research on chosen subjects of health protection during peacetime and wartime. Forms of education are:

lectures, field exercises and map trainings. Research activities includes: organization and functioning of military

medical service during peacetime and wartime and in the crisis situation. Improvement of medical evacuation

system according to medical indication during the combat activity.

The main aim of teaching toxicology is passing the knowledge to students about basic toxicological concept,

how the toxic chemical substances work and what are the pathological symptoms of intoxication. Mostly, we pay

attention to toxic substances that are used in military conflicts.

Including: Comprehensive hygienic-ergonomic studies onboard naval battleships. Analysis of morbidity of

marines on different duty posts. Examinations of hazards present onboard battleships (noise, vibrations,

accelerations). Development of salvage system in accidents at sea. Development of epidemiological early

warning system.

The course of lectures and seminars acquaints the students with the pathomechanisms and pathological

images of lesions and damages caused by contemporary warfare, as well as observed in casualties of terrorist’s

assaults. The course is conducted in the Clinical Pathomorphology and Cytopathology Department, thus the

lectures are focused on microscopic and gross pathology images of the discussed topics. During the course the

students get familiar with such problems as terminal ballistics in human body, the pathology and complications

of gunshot wounds, the physics of blast wave and the pathomechanism of blast injury (especially in respiratory

and abdominal organs), the peculiarities of landmine injury. Another topics of the course are the effects of

the nuclear explosions and the pathology of radiological injuries caused by nuclear warfare or by radiological

dispersal devices (“dirty” bombs). The special attention is paid on the molecular background of the poisoning

by selected agents as vesicants and blisters (e.g. mustards, lewisite), choking gases (e.g. phosgene, chlorine),

phosphoroorganic nerve agents, and biological toxins (ricin, botulin). Similarly, the pathology of most dangerous

diseases caused by biological factors enlisted on CDC list (e.g. hemorrhagic fever viruses, smallpox virus, anthrax,

tularemia, pestis) are presented together with the molecular mechanisms of action of viruses and bacteria.

Military Center of Medical Training located in Łódź nearby MUL employs experienced army doctors and run
