Edmonton’s The Provincial Archive’s upcoming full length. It’s All Shaken Wonder, is set for release August 19 on Black Box (Shad, The Wooden Sky, Northcote, Lyon, SonReal), and sees the band

pushing themselves artistically on this, their third full length release. “We've always felt that it's important to keep changing,” says singer/guitarist Craig Schram. “So we would hope that the songs

that you hear on It's All Shaken Wonder, and this EP are something that you haven't heard from us before. We want to be challenged to write music that we haven't already written, and this album

is definitely a part of that."

It’s All Shaken Wonder is actually their first in‐studio recording, which helped to shape to the band’s sonic progression. “In the past we recorded exclusively at home with all of the time and

comforts that it affords. The studio puts some constraints around us and made it more important for us to examine all of our ideas in rehearsal before getting in to record. I think it made

everything that we did, from writing to production, more thoughtful.”

The album is preceded by a digital‐only EP, Hide Like A Secret which was released June 10th in conjunction with a video for the lead single Daisy Garden, which is also featured as the first song on

the album. The single is currently serviced to CBC Radio while the video is seeing play on M3 and AUX respectively.

The band released It’s All Shaken Wonder in Germany in April, and recently completed a 3‐week tour of Europe and the UK. Catch them on tour in Canada in support of the new album this Fall, or

at Calgary Folk Fest later in July.

In the summer of 2012, a completely unknown band called Satellites released an elaborately packaged, “limited edition”

(only 500 copies) album simply entitled Satellites 01. The album, available only in the UK, garnered rave reviews, winding up

#16 on Rough Trade’s “Best Albums of 2012” that year.

Satellites 02 followed soon after, again released only in the UK, with gorgeous “bring back the beauty of the album”

packaging, and again the critically acclaimed album wound up on Rough Trade’s “Best Albums of 2013” charts.

Satellites is actually writer, singer, multi‐instrumentalist and producer Johnny Vic, an Englishman living in Copenhagen, who

has spent most of his professional life touring the world as a band member and musical director for other more famous

artists.

Since their initial release both 01 and 02 have gained momentum. They became blogger gold in the UK, word of mouth

successes that received write‐ups from The Guardian, Mojo & Clash. This summer Vic is finally making his long‐awaited jump

across the pond, releasing 02 for an North American audience. The North American release will be available as a “producer’s

To celebrate the release of Satellites 02 in North America, Vic is giving away “God Bless America,” his own introspective

homage to United States. The song is written from the perspective of a foreigner spending a two‐year stint living in the

States. “I wrote the song one sleepless night in a hotel room somewhere in middle America,” he says. “I was channel hopping

and the song is literally about what was on TV. Only in America would you see a guy selling a piece of cloth that he said had

been blessed by Jesus and that, if purchased and kept about one’s person, would scare off the devil! Then there was a news

article about some lonely kid who had gone on a gun rampage. It’s not an anti‐American song by any means. It’s more a song

about how crazy the place is for someone coming from outside.“

Oliver Seeler, a bagpipe player who was inspired by Golden Toad and Robert Thomas, recorded fellow busker Dawson in 1971 in Sea Ranch, CA. Oliver describes George as restless and uncomfortable in the studio, but what we hear is remarkable. “My whole training came from Mozart’s father’s book about violin technique (Versuch einer gründlichen Violinschule).” A tune like “The Minotaur” however, sounds like a swarm of bees violently shaken out of their hive. Where did he come up with that technique? “I made it up. But my influence is from baroque violin, and on bagpipes I know Dutch, German, Spanish, Welsh and great tunes from a couple of hundred years ago.” These are traditional tunes leavened with a touch of sorcery (see cover), a bit of Mendocino hippie, an audible ‘60’s hangover. 750 copies of the album were manufactured. In 1972, Dawson took the stage at Ash Grove with The White Brothers (Clarence, Roland & Eric), their father Eric White, Sr., LeRoy Mack and Pat Cloud. It would be the last moment in the limelight for Smoke Dawson, at least in terms of playing with nationally recognized artists. “I’ve been a computer programmer for IBM, a commercial fisherman, blacksmith, aerial photographer, goldmining engineer, wrestler, entertainer,” Dawson says. “I’ve played music for three to eight hours a day for thirty, forty years.” In 1992, George was diagnosed with cancer at the base of his tongue, was given six months to live, and went through experimental treatment protocol. The treatment was devastating and it took five years for him to recover. On his way from Eugene to Spokane WA, he collapsed. And he has stayed in that same small town in eastern Washington state ever since. Although he was left with essential tremor and other debilitating effects from radiation, he continued to play bagpipes. His town bought him a beautiful set so he could play weddings, funerals and town events. He is in touch with his four sons, from four different relationships. “I row a boat, smoke dope, my girlfriend of twenty years is in the advanced stages of Parkinson’s Disease. I talk to fish, deer, birds.” George turns reflective. “I was cuckoo, couldn’t get along in the world. The music always saved me. American Artifact chronicles the rise of American rock poster art since its birth in the '60s. The film explores the history and rise of the current rock poster movement in America, and features a cast of quirky, interesting, and extremely talented rock poster artists talking about their work and telling the story of their underground art movement. Beginning in the 1960s in San Francisco with the birth of the dance concert, a rock poster accompanied almost every show that was put on during that era. Soon, people began pulling the posters off of the telephone poles almost as quickly as they were put up. In the '80s, flyers were done for punk shows on Xerox machines in local libraries or at Kinko's. They were glued to buildings and phone poles surreptitiously at night by kids in the scene. The next one up in our series of releases from Don Peake is his classic score to Wes Craven's cult film "The Hills Have Eyes". Assembled and produced by the composer himself, this album features the entire score and a specially added bonus: The track slates of the individual cues! These short communications between stage and booth make the listener feel as if he were right at the recording session. The score is very eerie, and you might want to keep the lights on... Excerpts from the liner notes by Don Peake: "In 1977, Wes Craven hired me to score a very dark horror film entitled "The Hills Have Eyes". I was immediately struck with the brutality of the characters, and I decided to create a sparse and disturbing score, utilizing both acoustic instruments and a few experimental electronic instruments. I used "The Beam", a long aluminum channel (about 10 feet), strung with a single wire. The player (Craig Huntley) would slide a piece of steel up the wire string, creating a long glissando. I also had the prop master deliver the bone necklaces that the actors wore in the movie, to the scoring stage. I used these bones as shakers for the chase scenes. The percussionists each had a necklace to play. Mike Lang played the wild piano part for the interior search of the trailer. The strange viola sound came from an old recording viola with a horn attached, played by Toni Marcus".

Coleman Hawkins was a hugely influential exponent of the tenor saxophone in jazz, being widely regarded as the first artist to establish the instrument as an essential component of the genre's sound. Beginning his career in the early days of jazz in the late '20s, he became a major figure during the swing and big band eras spanning WWII, but also made a significant contribution to the bebop scene into the 1950s. His distinctive but highly adaptable style and sound enabled him to perform over the years in small bands and large orchestras alike both as sideman, leader and featured soloist, and this collection draws on examples of all those elements of his career, from his early recordings with Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra in 1927 through to bebop sessions alongside lush recordings with strings in the mid-'50s. It's a great value 48-track 2-CD , and along the way, there are contributions from many great names of the genre, too numerous to list here, but including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Cozy Cole, J.J.
