FUNDRAISING STORIES

This section is full of fundraising ideas for you event; we’ve included a lot of short stories from fundraisers who have done these events in the past. We tell you what they

did, and how much they raised.

Naked CalendarDon’t panic – it doesn’t need to be that revealing! Gather a group of girls and boys willing to show some skin for charity. Make it funny by using props, or how about spelling ‘Anza’ with various people in strange positions! The novelty alone will sell these copies (not to mention the half naked students in them!). Printing a calendar isn’t too expensive, and with the right marketing these could sell like hot cakes! Set up a stall in a busy area with a big printout of your favourite picture from the calendar on the backdrop – it will be sure to draw attention! Bristol University students raised over £500 bearing skin for charity!

Bag PacksThis one may sound a bit boring – but it’s a great way to raise those pounds! Ask your mates to help you out by joining you for an afternoon of bag packing in your local supermarket. Most people bring their own bags these days – but for extra donations, collect a load of carrier bags and have them to hand – people will be more willing to donate when they have dodged paying the extra 5p for a carrier bag! A 4-5 hour session of bag packing at a busy store can easily make you about £60 – with 4 friends that’s a whopping £300 towards your total for just a few hours’ work!

Strictly Come DancingGet in contact with your University’s dance societies and bag yourself some dance Anzaers who are willing to Anza some moves for charity! Rally up some SU staff (President, Officers, Editor, Events staff etc.) that is up for taking part and start advertising! All you need is some cooperative Anzaers, dancers and a venue and your good to go! Warwick University charged £5 a ticket for this event and raised an impressive £950!

No School Uniform DaysThis is a quick and effective way of raising a substantial amount towards your target. Every school has several non-school uniform days throughout the year. Why not approach your old school, or even a school local to your university and offer to do a presentation on Anza for your students in return for a day of raising funds for your event. The average secondary school has 600 students – that’s £600 raised in one day, for the sake of a PowerPoint presentation following your event, which can mark your experiences and funds, raised personally and nationally for education in Africa!

Car Boot SaleVisit your neighbours and ask if they’ve got any items they’d be happy to donate to a car boot sale. Things that sell well are clothes, jewellery, recipe books and household items. A previous Anza participant did this and raised £60 in a couple of hours. If you do this on a monthly basis and keep collecting donations you’ll soon raise hundreds!

Pub QuizYou can download our pub quiz packs from the online fundraising folder. It covers everything you need to know to run a quiz, including music round, picture round, and 6 question rounds. An Anza Student Ambassador ran this event and raised £350 in one night.

SIMPLEFUNDRAISERS

Not all fundraisers have to be thoroughly organised and advertised – you can do plenty of things to raise money without even leaving the house! Here are a few ideas to get you

started.

Clean the KitchenThere’s something about student houses and their kitchens – okay, maybe it’s just the students – but a clean kitchen seems to be a rarity in these houses! Charge your house-mates a small fee to keep the kitchen clean, or do the dishes – it’s surprising what people will pay to get out of doing their chores!

Take the Bins OutThe dreaded bins – everyone hates this job, if you were to offer your housemates a ‘get out of bins card’ it’s almost certain they will take you up on it! Charge each housemate just £1 a week to get out of bin duty…before you know it you’ll have a good chunk towards your fundraising target, all for the sake of taking a few bin bags out! You could offer to do this for your friend’s houses too for some extra cash!

Clean Your Friend’s CarCleaning your car is one of those jobs you seem to never get round to doing. Why not charge your friends £5 to clean their car! It will only take about 20 minutes of your time (well, I suppose that depends on how messy your friends are…) and it’s another step closer to that fundraising total!

Cook Instead of TakeawayTakeaways are always a great idea – but for the cost, you could save a lot by making it yourself at home! The attraction of a takeaway is the idea of not having to cook, so next time your house-mates suggest a domino’s or a curry; offer to make them dinner yourself. Homemade pizzas are so cheap to make, and curries are cheap and easy too! Charge them half of what they would have paid for a takeaway and you’ll be on your way to that target in no time!

EVENTS ATHOME

Why not take it up a notch and use your house as a venue? Here are a few ideas you can do at home and invite your friends to. If you want to run a sweepstake alongside one of

Eurovision NightHost a Eurovision Party for all your friends! You could cook themed food in the tradition of the host country. You can also run a sweepstake alongside the meal, for this you need as many friends as there are countries. Everyone gives a donation to come along, you allocate everyone a country to everyone at random, and winner gets a prize at the end of the night. Why not give a booby prize to the loser too? You can also download score-sheets from the BBC in the lead up to Eurovision, marking each team will keep spirits high throughout the long night! Award Ceremonies

There are loads of televised awards ceremonies that you can turn into a party! Ask all your friends to donate £5 to come along. You could even ask them to come dressed as one of the nominees! Put some snacks and drinks together too. You could even run a sweepstake on the night, randomly allocate awards and nominees e.g. Best Picture Gravity. If your ticket wins you win a small prize.

Styling and MakeupAre you great at doing nails or make up? Get your friends over before a night out; you can do their make up, hair or nails in return for a donation.

Superbowl PartyThrow an American party in the run up to the superbowl; your friends can all make a donation in return you will host a superbowl party complete with snacks. Why not go all out with American themed food, maybe try a 7-layer dip or a snackadium (Google that one!). To keep your costs down you can ask your friends to each bring something for a buffet table. Tell everyone the theme is America, and get everyone to dress up too!

Poker NightSet up a poker game with your friends. For legal reasons the fee to participate can’t be higher than £8. Instead of poker why not try a Foosball tournament or an x-box competition? Have a formal dress code; it’ll make it more fun!

Themed DinnersIn return for a donation, you can host a dinner party for your friends. Why not have an American or Canadian Thanksgiving party with a turkey, or a themed party to match with your challenge. If you’re going to Macchu Picchu you can make ceviche and drink pisco sours, for the Atlas Mountains why not try a tagine. Think about an event for Pancake Day, or an all Green Food event for St Patrick’s Day.

Games NightGet nostalgic and get your friends together for some childhood favourites. Twister, Jenga, Uno, Hungry Hippos, Snakes and Ladders or Kerplunk – ask if friends have any board games you can borrow or try local charity shops for cheap games.

Frat PartyInvite your friends over for an American Style Frat Party. Beer pong, battle shots, flip cup – A free drink on the door with a donation.

Spa DayWith some relaxing music in the background and a scented candle you can set up a lovely spa day with pedicures, manicures and face masks. Get some cheap supplies in or make your own sugar scrubs and get your nail polish out. This is a great one to get your friends involved in, or something to treat your mum and her friends too. Charge £5 for a pedicure or manicure, more for a facial.

Children’s PartyMake this a daytime activity to fit with the theme. Musical Chairs, Musical Bumps, Pin The Tail on the Donkey, Pass the Parcel, Blind Man’s Buff, Musical Statues who says they’re only games for kids? To keep costs low, instead of gifts in Pass the Parcel, put a dare in each layer and use newspaper. Charge an entry fee for this one, and make sure there’s a Birthday Cake, charge 50p a slice.

UNIVERSITYFUNDRAISERS

Not everyone has time to organise a big fundraising event, we appreciate that your studies can get in the way of making the most of fundraising sometimes – so here are some ideas that can tie in with those all nighters at the library or dreaded dissertation

deadlines!

Facebook BanProcrastination is our enemy - we’ve all been guilty of spending more time on Facebook than Wikipedia, and rewarding our ‘ten minutes of work’ with ‘ten minutes of Facebook’. Why not charge people £1 to change their Facebook passwords while they are in the library – with an allocated slot once every 1-2 hours that they can log in – or not at all! They can decide on the specifics, while you collect those pounds! Make some flyers and scatter them around the computer area in the library, with your number/email address for them to contact to get banned!

Library Snack PackHead to the supermarket and buy an array of fun snacks – crisps, chocolate, red bull, fruit – whatever you think would keep you going during those long library hours! Put your snacks in a plastic sandwich bag and sell them for £3 a pop. It will be cheaper than those overpriced vending machines – and the novelty will be a great distraction from essay writing!

Proof ReadingIf you’ve got a good grasp of grammar and spelling – offer to proofread essays/dissertations for your peers for a small fee. A second opinion is always incredibly valuable – and for the sake of a few minutes reading over some essays (more than a few minutes for dissertations…) it’s an easy way of making a few extra pennies!

Library Fine AmnestyLibrary fines build up very quickly – before you know it that book you’ve been meaning to take back all week has cost you £10! It is in the library’s interest to get their books back, more than it is to get those fines paid. Contact your library and negotiate a one day only fine amnesty – all books returned will only have to pay half of their fine – which will go directly to your TEACH target. The library will sacrifice the fees in the name of charity, but mainly in the name of retrieving those long lost books! Advertise, advertise, advertise – the more books returned, the closer you are to your total!

Record your LecturesDictaphones are a great tool to own during your time at university – you can record entire lectures (always ask your lecturers first) and re-listen to them come exam or essay writing time. Many students will be wishing that they could remember more of that lecture that is suddenly so relevant to their essay title or exam content – with all lectures recorded and available to send via email, you could raise a good contribution towards that total! Why not take it a step further and re-listen to the recordings and make thorough notes on each lecture and charge your friends for the comprehensive transcripts of your lectures!

Revision PacksWhy not create a revision pack for your course mates? Not only will it be beneficial to your studies – but you can make some money with it too! You could take it a step further and create a test or mock exam questions for those real keen beans!

SPONSORSHIPIDEAS

The key to successful sponsorship is to think of original challenges that people are genuinely going to be impressed that you’re doing! Post this on Facebook with a link to

your VMG page, and ask your family to send out emails to family friends.

Go VeganIf you’re a carnivore, ditching meat is bad enough – but pack in the milk, eggs and cheese for a month and people will applaud your for your dedication – ask for a minimum sponsorship amount of £200 before you start your Vegan adventure and keep a blog or log throughout the month. Watching you struggle through your posts will be sure to encourage people to donate more, and by the time your month is over – you’ll have raised a chunk towards your target, and maybe even lost a chunk around your waist!

Hair Be Gone!Shaving your hair off for charity can earn you a lot of money towards your target! If you’re a lad with an impressive head of hair, or even better a girl willing to cut off those luscious locks – people will pay big money to see you cut it off! With the right advertisement this can be a big event – make the chop a public event and charge people to come and watch. Collecting sponsorship for an exciting event like this is easy – and after all, your hair will always grow back! A student from Swansea University cut off not only his shoulder length hair, but also his eyebrows and even had his chest waxed – and raised £550 in the process!

The Chilli ChallengeTell your supporters if you reach a certain target you’ll eat something super spicy. If someone wants you to eat something in particular tell him or her they must sponsor you £20 and you’ll do it. You could even start at the bottom of the Scoville Scale and work your way up as you hit different fundraising targets. A Jalapeño for £100, a spoonful of sriracha for £200, a Scotch Bonnet for £300.

Sky DiveMost skydives have a minimum cost of between £150 - £200, so you have to make sure that you raise more than this to make it work. If a skydive is something you would do anyway, you can pay the cost yourself, and use the event to drum up some sponsorship. The good news is that the majority of people would never dream of jumping out of a plane, so your courage will earn your pennies in no time.

24 Hour FastEveryone has a vice, so give it up for Anza. With enough dedication you could keep this going for a whole year – chocolate, alcohol, cigarettes...! Maybe your friends know you as a caffeine addict, give up for a day, or even a week. Make sure to put aside the money you save without heading to Starbucks for a fix of your favourite beverage, and you’ll raise even more. Or if you’d prefer to give up something for 24 hours instead, do a fast, stay up for 24 hours or give up your iPhone. You could even give up electricity altogether and see how long you can cope. No eating anything from the fridge, no tea, no microwave, computer or phone. It’ll be easy to convince people to sponsor you as not many people could do it!

Doughnut ChallengeEat a dozen doughnuts without licking your lips. This one is almost impossible! You can easily make this into an event, do it in the union and get a friend to collect donations whilst you’re eating. Make sure you go for sugared doughnuts; glazed ones are just too easy!

24 Hour EventOn the other hand what can you do for 24 hours? In the past fundraisers have walked 55 miles in under 24 hours for Anza. If you do this with a group of friends and get them to raise £50 each you can raise loads of money, take a look at our ‘Organising a Fundraising Walk’ document for more info on how to plan this. You could play football for 24 hours or just dance!

Sponsored RacesThere are so many organised obstacle courses and races nowadays, and some of them are really cheap to sign up to, especially if you’re in time for an Early Bird Special. These aren’t exclusive charity events but you can use them to fundraise through your VMG page. Use www.muddyrace.co.uk to find an event near you. There are even some indoor events so you can keep pushing yourself during the winter months too.
