MESSAGE FROM DEVON COUNTY COUNCILLOR JOHN BERRY

As your County Councillor I am here to help and I have dealt with a range of problems, including grass cutting, school transport appeals, but overwhelmingly traffic concerns are the biggest problem. With more houses, it can only become worse.

At Kingfisher Reach there has been huge disruption from contractors’ vehicles involved with building Knowle II development. The road through Kingfisher Reach is only 6 metres wide with many twists and turns, is expected to become the link road joining Swallow Way 7.2m wide, to a new road 6.5m wide, through the North West Development (area from Tiverton Road, behind College Surgery and beyond Rull Lane), diverting traffic away from the Town Centre. This is likely to be a bottleneck. There is a suggestion that Langlands Road should be considered as an alternative, which is not in the plan, and which I do not support. I am working with other Councillors to try to improve things. The NW Development will comprise approximately 1100 new houses, new school and commercial units which will generate even more traffic. Following talks there is now a chance that contractors will not use St Georges Well to access this development when work commences.

An Eastern Relief Road is essential. I continue to make the case for this to come forward before further development, and make DCC Highways aware of the huge problems of congestion and air pollution created by lack of adequate highway infrastructure. Decisions have been delayed further due to investigation by the Environment Agency.

Delays at traffic lights on the M5 junction, cause problems for traffic at peak times and exiting from the Kingsmill Estate. I am lobbying Highways for the following:

adjustments to the lights to improve things for everyone.

a bridge over the M5 to give pedestrians and cyclists safe crossing. On the High St I have managed to get parking

restrictions between 5 – 8 pm which I hope will help keep the traffic flowing.

Grass cutting, or lack of it, caused problems this year and talking with a new contractor hoping for better results next year.

As your County Councillor each year I have a Locality Budget which can be allocated to non-profit making clubs or organisations in the Ward, for projects or improvements. This year the following organisations in Cullompton were awarded grants amounting to £8,500 :

Cullompton Food Festival

Disability Group

Cullompton Family Centre

John Tallack Youth Centre

Cullompton Rugby Club

Parks Community Group

Youth Football

Cullompton Rangers Football

Cullompton Bowling Club

Allotment Association

St Andrews School

Cullompton Community College

Willowbank School

Cullompton Majorettes

The Hayridge In 2015/16 other organisations were awarded

£7,100. Cullompton is well blessed with many diverse organisations whose success bring a better community spirit and quality of life for all. Funding alone is not everything, it is the huge commitment of time and energy by all the volunteers that ensures success and creates a vibrant Town. My thanks and admiration go to you for all you do, for your help and guidance.

I welcome those who are new to the town, and wish everyone in Cullompton a very Happy Christmas and a successful New Year. If you have problems with anything concerning DCC please don't hesitate to contact me by phone 01884 32320 or email [email protected]. I regularly attend Town council meetings and can be contacted there. I will do my best to help.

John Berry

Devon County Councillor for Cullompton Rural (comprising parishes of Cullompton, Kentisbeare, Blackborough, Butterleigh, Bradninch, Silverton)

Very many thanks to Walter H Squires and Son

for sponsoring the Higher Bullring Christmas

Tree again this year.

JOHN TALLACK YOUTH & COMMUNITY CENTRE The YMCA organises youth clubs at the John Tallack Centre on

Monday evenings 7pm-9pm for those aged 11-14 and Thursday evenings 7pm-9pm for 14-17 year olds. Sessions are very well attended, particularly on Monday evenings when numbers can reach 75. This is becoming difficult for the youth workers to supervise effectively and voluntary help with these sessions would be a great benefit. If you would like to offer your help at these sessions then for more information please contact [email protected] or ringing him at the YMCA office 01392 410530.

TAKING CARE OF OUR OLDER PETS Do you own a dog or a cat that is over 9 years old? Like us, as dogs and cats grow older, they are at an increased risk of developing common age-related diseases, such as Cancer, Kidney Disease, Diabetes mellitus, Dental disease, Arthritis, Heart disease, Mental confusion, Hyperthyroidism. Animals that are developing arthritis, for example, may be more reluctant to jump or run and you may see changes in their normal behaviour, such as sleeping in unusual positions and uncharacteristic grumpiness!

Other signs of illness can be increased or decreased appetite or drinking and weight loss or gain. Signs of disease can develop slowly over a period of time and sometimes go unnoticed. Early detection of these diseases mean steps can be taken to slow their progression and promote a good quality of life in old age. When diabetes and hyperthyroidism are caught early, they can be treated effectively for many years. Signs of kidney failure only start to show when 75% of the animal’s kidneys have been destroyed, so the earlier this is diagnosed, the more of the kidney function can be saved.

If you feel that your older pet would benefit from a check up, call your veterinary practice. Most practices will offer a ‘Free Creaky clinic’ with a nurse where your pet can be examined for signs of disease, including urine test and blood pressure measurements.

Complimentary services such as Physiotherapy and Hydrotherapy are often used to help our Oldies lead happier and more comfortable lives.

DEVONSHIRE HOMES CELEBRATES SALES SUCCESS AT RIVEL’S GREEN

Sales Executives Susie and Yvonne at Devonshire Homes’ exciting new Cullompton development, named Rivel’s Green, have been rushed off their feet with visitors following the launch of its first brand new, beautifully furnished show homes.

The launch event was a huge success, packed full of local people eager to see the two bedroom ‘Tavy’ house type and three bedroom ‘Webb’ house type up close. TUFTY PARK AND HEADWEIR ROAD

PLAY AREAS Cullompton Town Council will be taking a 25 year lease on the Tufty and Headweir Road play areas. Final terms of the lease are agreed and the lease will be signed in the near future.

Tufty Park, in particular, is in need of significant modernisation with much of the play equipment having been removed or decommissioned by Mid Devon District Council due to safety concerns. The council has conducted two public consultation exercises in conjunction with a local support group to establish exactly what kind of equipment is required at these parks.

One was a Survey Monkey survey that was completed by lots of respondents to give the council an idea of what type of equipment was needed at these parks including the age ranges that should be provided for. This formed the basis of a briefing given to several play area design companies who came up with some suggestions of the type and layout of equipment that could be installed and these ideas were shown to the public at this year’s Summer Fayre in the CCA Fields. There was lots of interest in these ideas and, from the results of this consultation, an invitation to tender was issued.

A grant fund application has been made to raise the remainder of the funding required—the council has agreed to earmark some money from the Section 106 Public Open Space agreements made with developers in the town and Save Tufty and Headweir Parks has raised some money as well including a donation from Devon County Councillor John Berry from his Locality Budget—but there will still be a significant shortfall.

Should this grant funding application be successful, new play equipment will be installed. Timescales are still a bit open ended, but it is anticipated that the new parks will be open for business no later than the Spring of 2017.

Watch this space for developments. If you think you can help with fundraising or publicity for the play parks at Tufty and Headweir Road, you can help by visiting and liking www.facebook.com/tuftyandheadweirparks and getting involved.

CULLOMPTON MARKETS The Town Council runs an outdoor market in High Street

every Wednesday morning, stalls are £10 to include a gazebo, but you will need to bring your own table. Also on Wednesday mornings there is an indoor market in the Town Hall. Anyone interested in having a stall at the street market should contact the Town Council office for more information.

THE WALRONDS For newcomers to Cullompton and those who have not

explored it, the Walronds is the recently restored Grade 1 house on Fore Street in the centre of Cullompton. The garden at the rear of the house is open daily between 8am and 5pm with free access and provides an ideal route for pedestrians between Shortlands Lane and Fore Street. It makes it possible to avoid the narrow pavements of Tiverton Road and is an oasis of peace in a busy town centre. The garden is regularly used by boules players and the pitch is available during opening hours. It also provides a lovely setting for music in the garden and has been used to host performances by Tiverton Town Band, the Community Choir, and the Blackdown Samba Band, and a performance of Shakespeare in the Park.

The ground floor of the house itself was one of the central venues for the Cullompton Festival of Food and Drink and provides the perfect setting for family parties, celebrations, pop up meals, meetings, music and drama. It has 3 reception rooms, lavatories and a commercially equipped kitchen. The Burrow Room, which is the home of Café Walronds on the second and fourth Saturday morning of each month, has a touch screen with some very interesting local history information, including the Walronds, St. Andrew’s Church and Coldharbour Mill.

Details of room availability and hire charges can be found on the Walronds website www.walronds.com or for further information leave a message on 01884 35934.
