This doesn’t do justice to Russell’s talk but the Editor ran out of time to put in the full version. Suffi ce to say there were many great questions asked from the fl oor and great answers given by Russell. At the end of the questions President Pat presented Russell with the Club tie that he hoped he would wear at one of his next press conferences.

With only one week to go to the Winter Solstice, it was a dark and dim start to the day as a hardy group of nine Hackers lined up for the Pre-Game Putting Competition, won decisively by Bill Howley. However it was all breaking bad for Bill thereafter, seemingly suffering from symptoms of dendrophilia.

It was a great morning for golf - mild, overcast and no wind. Competition was keen. David Lee was a model of consistency, winning both Longest Drive and Lowest Score. Ron Stark got Nearest the Pin while Ivan Vojlay excelled in narrowly winning the Handicap Trophy from an improving Ray Street. At the Venus trophy hole, Arthur Hubbard surprised himself by successfully negotiating the water hazard while Acting Captain Bruce Crossley drove on to the green only to narrowly miss a birdie putt. Sven-Erik Bredenberg and Tom Buxton played solid rounds and were close, but no cigar.

Mayer Page Health WalkOn Sunday 30 plus Rotarians, partners

and wives (not forgetting the dogs!) and one fitness trainer braved the

chilly conditions on the foreshore at Hampton Pavilion to enjoy an afternoon

of fellowship and gentle exercise. All except the Editor managed to touch

their toes in the warmup conducted by Pete Beaumont. This was followed by a slow walk to Green Point and on return

tunnel ball and tug-of-war. We all felt we deserved a good feed after that and that’s

what we got. A BBQ with salads and desserts followed. Many thanks to Glenn

and Suzie Ross, Sue Fairlam, Vera Sherman and Sally Morris for organising such a great day!

GREAT TO SEE YOU WEARING THE CLUB CAPS GUYS!

Rotary International Conference SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA 1-4 JUNEThe 105th Rotary International Convention was held at Sydney’s Olympic Park from Sunday 1st June to Wednesday 4th June. Approximately 18,000 people from around the world attended, including about 170 people from District 9800. It was a wonderful experience. With 4000 clubs from around the world represented the Convention created a real awareness of being part of an international organization. The opening ceremony was a particular highlight. (There were actually two ceremonies to cope with the numbers of people attending.) The Premier of NSW and the Prime Minister of Australia both made great welcome speeches. PM Tony Abbott received a standing ovation when he announced that Australia would make a $100 million dollar donation to the End Polio campaign. Life savers rowed the Rotary flag from Manly to the Allphones Arena and paraded the flags of the 200 nations represented. Human Nature then entertained with an hour long show of Motown songs. Ron Burton summed it up by saying “It was the best RI Convention ever”.At right top: - Prime Minister Tony Abbott at the Convention. Bottom: RI President-elect Gary C.K.
