8.0 QUALITY CONTROL
8.1 For each group of samples processed, preparation blanks (Type IIwater and reagents) should be carried throughout the entire sample preparationand analytical process. These blanks will be useful In determining If samplesare being contaminated.
8.2 Duplicate samples should be processed on a routine basis. Duplicatesamples will be used to determine precision. The sample load will dictate thefrequency, but 20X 1s recommended.
8.3 Spiked samples or standard reference materials should be employed todetermine accuracy. A spiked sample should be Included with each group ofsamples processed and whenever a new sample matrix Is being analyzed.
8.4 The concentration of all calibration standards should be verifiedagainst a quality control check sample obtained from an outside source.
8.5 The method of standard addition shall be used for the analysis ofall EP extracts. See Method 7000, Section 8.7, for further Information.

ACID DIGESTION OF SEDIMENTS. SLUDGES, AND SOILS
1.0 SCOPE AND APPLICATION
1.1 This method 1s an add digestion procedure used to prepare sedi-ments, sludges, and soil samples for analysis by flame or furnace atomicabsorption spectroscopy (FLAA and GFAA, respectively) or by Inductivelycoupled argon plasma spectroscopy (ICP). Samples prepared by this method maybe analyzed by ICP for all the listed metals, or by FLAA or GFAA as Indicatedbelow (see also Paragraph 2.1):

2.1 A representative 1- to 2-g (wet weight) sample 1s digested 1n nitricadd and hydrogen peroxide. The dlgestate 1s then refluxed with either nitricadd or hydrochloric add. Dilute hydrochloric add Is used as the finalreflux add for (1) the ICP analysis of As and Se, and (2) the flame AA or ICPanalysis of Al, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Mo, Pb, N1, K, Na, Tl, V, andZn. Dilute nitric acid 1s employed as the final dilution add for the furnaceAA analysis of As, Be, Cd, Cr, Co, Pb, Mo, Se, Tl, and V. A separate sampleshall be dried for a total solids determination.
