Mushrooms – Fruit of the Forest

Fungi are more than dirty decomposers, they are life givers. Mushrooms, which are the often forgotten fruit of the forest, evoke mystery and intrigue. Let’s take a look beyond the surface level and go underground into the world of fungi with Rachel. She will breakdown how to identify mushrooms and the basics of foraging them safely, also sharing how fungi are an incredible part of creation that was clearly designed for connecting life as much as it was for decomposing it.

How to Fold A Rock

A big THANK YOU to the hikers and volunteers for the 2019 Timberline Challenge fundraising event!

For this year’s Timberline Challenge, Hike DCC raced against the clock in an attempt to beat the record of 16:20:47, which they set two years ago. After starting in the chilly pre-dawn at 4:30am on Saturday, July 20, the Leg 1 hikers finished their leg twelve minutes faster than expected, setting the tone for the rest of the race. The anchor leg (Leg 5) hikers crossed the finish line just after 8:30pm with plenty of daylight to spare. Hike DCC took over 20 minutes off their 2017 course record, just missing 16 hours and finishing in 16:00:46. They also raised over $1,300 for DSA in the process. By all accounts, the 2019 Timberline Challenge was a successful event. You can relive the race by going to http://www.facebook.com/timberlinechallenge

Don’t miss the trophy and check presentation at this month’s DSA meeting, and save the date for next year’s Timberline Challenge: July 18, 2020. Please consider volunteering for next year’s race. We are always looking for volunteers. More information to come in the next few months.

Needed - DSA has several volunteer positions open: 1) Webmaster – this person would update our website monthly, putting in meeting notices and sending out the DSA newsletter to those who signed up for the email version. 2) Timberline Challenge Coordinator – someone who would be the local contact for the Timberline Challenge and help Phil Gaskill with coordinating all the various aspects of the event. 3) Videographer – Starting next summer, film our DSA meetings, edit and create DVDs for the book table.
