Crop UpdateApples & Pears

Avocados

Asparagus

Bell Peppers

Berries

Broccoli

Cauliflower

Washington is wrapping up with old crop, and new crop is on the horizon. Golden Delicious, Granny Smth, and Gala apples are snug as we are awaiting new crop to get into product. Look for markets to be firm, and apples snug until new crop is in full swing. Bartlett, Bosc, and Red pears are available out of the California growing region.

Supplies from central Mexico continues to decrease as current growing regions finish. There is better availability on smaller sizes. Markets continue to increase. Jumbo sizes are limited from all growing regions.

California is at the tail end of their season. The MX “Flora Loca” is heavier on smaller size fruit, but is beginning to wind down as we approach the next crop. Overall quality is good. Markets are steady but we could see the market increase once California finishes.

Green bell production has increased with Fresno and new fields in Stockton/Hollister starting. Red and Yellow bells are winding down out of Bakersfield with limited supplies coming from Fresno and will be limited until new starts in Oxnard. Markets are higher on Reds/Yellows while Greens start to come off. Quality is great.

The broccoli market continues to stay steady with steady supplies in the pipeline. This recent warm weather has brought fields forward the last couple of weeks and has effected the overall quality. Quality is fair with slight purpling, some mechanical damage and occasional yellow cast.

The recent warm weather in the Salinas Valley continues to keep supplies at a moderate level. Cauliflower fields are slightly ahead of schedule and seeing a slight gap in supply. Overall, the quality is good with minor bruising and yellow cast with weights in the 25 to 28-pound level.

Blackberries California is the main supplier right now, with Mexican product gaining steam. Quality overall is decent, with some leakers and red cell found in some cases.

Raspberries Quality overall has been good, with some slightly softer fruit, and leakers found in some cases. Supply has increased with additional fruit being shipped up from Mexico, and should increase as their production continues to ramp up.

Strawberries The heat in Salinas has wreaked havoc on the strawberries all summer long. The plants are tired and have yielded less fruit that expected, which has caused prices to remain snug. Bruising, smaller berries, white shoulder, and cat face are all prevalent in the fruit being shipped. The Santa Maria crop has started in a small way, and will hopefully bring on some better quality fruit and increased supplies.

Blueberries Blueberry quality out of the Pacific Northwest continues to be less than ideal, with soft, smaller fruit being packed and shipped out. Supplies out of Mexico are on the horizon, and hopefully we should see some improved quality with their arrival.

FRESH FACTSYour Weekly Market Update!

Steady supplies of product continue out of Salinas and Santa Maria. The best availability continues on large sizing, twenty-four counts in particular. A few shippers are flexing for volume type orders. Thirty-six counts are the least available, but there is enough to meet demand. Michigan has started production. This will inevitably ease the pressure on California production to meet demand in the marketplace. Some minimal quality issues include leafy tops, insect damage and mechanical. Overall quality continues to be reported as strong. The weights are averaging 48 -54 pounds.

Leaf Lettuce & Iceberg100% Salinas Product

Potatoes

Tomatoes

The Burbank season is on the tail end, and Norkotahs are the main variety being shipped. Quality has been good, with a few reports of hollow hearts. Markets are firm, but should ease up as we get further along into the Norkotah season. Colored potatoes are limited out of Idaho and California.

Central Mexico has finished on Gas Green tomatoes and California has been limited product. New fields begin on Rounds and Romas from Baja causing markets to even out with steady production. Quality is good. Cherries and Grape supplies continue to be limited due to transition in Baja. Markets are higher. Quality is very nice.

Iceberg Lettuce: Demand has fallen off and the quality is much stronger. Escalated pricing on value-added items is still in play, but expect normal pricing towards the end of the week. The problem of lightweights has gone away. Expect wrap lettuce at 39-44 pounds from multiple suppliers. Processors are still watching averages but there is more availability compared to past weeks. There have been minor reports of insect damage, puffiness, and some mildew but minimal. The overall reports on this commodity are above average. Expect good availability for the entire week.

Leaf Lettuce: Better availability on romaine continues with most shippers. There is no escalated pricing on value-added romaine items, as well as Green and Red Leaf. Romaine Hearts have better availability compared to past weeks but availability is still moderate to light, overall. Green and Red Leaf have been reported on the strong side. Aside from occasional insect damage, mildew and light fringe burn, reports are very good for all the romaine and leaf items. The weights on romaine are averaging 32-37 pounds and Green and Red Leaf range from 22-25 pounds.

OnionsCalifornia is done for the season, and we have transitioned back up into Idaho. Quality has been good across the board.

Pineapple

Celery

Pineapple supplies are forecasted to be tight through mid-September. This is typical for this time of year due to a condition called Naturally Differentiated Flowering (NDF). NDF occurs when weather patterns of low light or cool temperatures trigger ethylene product of the pineapple plant which leads to a disrupted supply of fruit resulting in lower yields per acre. Typically the summer demand during July – September tends to be soft and the entire industry is forecasted to experience similar supply issues until they improve.

Information is subject to daily weather and market fluctuations and is meant to be used as a guide.

SquashSupplies are strong out of Santa Maria and are lighter out of Baja. Markets are steady and quality is excellent.
