THE PREMIER CONFERENCE FOR PUBLIC SAFETY AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE

19 SEPTEMBER | COURSE DESCRIPTIONS08:30–09:00Opening Session: ACE Recognition and Dispatcher of the Year AwardJerry Overton, Pam Stewart

09:00–09:45Moving Away From Time-Based TargetsDr. Brendan Lloyd, Richard Lee

This presentation will centre around the Welsh Ambulance Service and its success with its clinical model that shifted away from time-based responses. Attendees will hear about the journey the Welsh Ambulance Service has taken during the past two years with the support of the Welsh Assembly.

10:15–11:00Reducing Complaints and Empowering EMDsDarren Game, Dawn Poulson Whelan

We’ll explore the two most common types of complaints made against EMDs and how they are investigated. Where and how do managers and ED-Qs™ fit into this process? Can CDE help prevent these complaints? If so, what are the challenges of delivering relevant and inspiring CDE that engages EMDs? We’ll provide an overview of current CDE in the London Ambulance Service and discuss ideas to create more innovative CDE.

11:15–12:00The Elephant in the Room—A Birthing TravestyAmanda Mansfield, Lyn Sugg, James Gummett

We’ll discuss childbirth: engaging in the scenario using Protocol 24, looking at MPDS® and beyond, and developing your inner midwife.

13:00–13:45‘Demeanor’ the Dispatcher ‘Demeanor’ the Caller Peter Keating, Tracy Dale

How do EMDs measure their coping mechanisms? Do EMDs need a MOT mental check to see if their jobs are changing their lives for better or worse? This presentation will look to empower EMDs to talk about mental health issues—good and bad. We will explore the factors that cause these issues and show ways to avoid them. By identifying the symptoms, we can show how to begin coping with the effects they have on your personnel and work life. The hot topic today is celebs talking about their problems so let’s get our celebs (EMDs) talking too.

14:00–14:45Meningitis and Sepsis—Do You Know the Score?Alexandra Kane

This presentation will look at what meningitis and sepsis are and how well we understand the symptoms if they are offered during a 999 call. We will examine how missed meningitis cases have been presented in the media and the minefield this area is for both EMDs and clinicians. During this session, we will look at how SWAST trains EMDs to recognise the symptoms and how to manage these types of calls.

15:15–16:00Nurse Triage: Across the SpectrumDr. Conrad Fivaz

Nurse triage has been identified as one of the key considerations as health care systems transform. We will explore best practices, the science behind nurse triage, clinical governance and safety, and where and how this intervention is practised around the world.

16:15–17:00How Can we Get EMDs to Learn From Their Mistakes?Zerena Duhaney, James Gummett

When you make a mistake, it’s important that you don’t fall into the trap of trying to justify it. Mistakes must be embraced rather than rationalised. Unless you take ownership of your mistakes, you will never truly learn the lessons you must master to move forward in this area of your life. This session will present ideas to help EMDs learn from their mistakes.

THE PREMIER CONFERENCE FOR PUBLIC SAFETY AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE

20 SEPTEMBER | COURSE DESCRIPTIONS 08:15–09:00IAED Universal Standards for Customer ServiceJessica Hooper

Customer service training has not historically been delivered to new EMDs, despite the fact that we have very rigid customer service standards on which audits are based. This session will discuss a training document that was written in an effort to improve overall customer service compliance and provide continued customer service training and support for EMDs.

09:00–09:30Welcome Keynote Vaughan Gething AMThe Cabinet Secretary for Health, Well-being, and Sport is responsible for: Day to day oversight of all aspects of NHS delivery and performance in Wales, including: performance against targets set out in the NHS Outcomes and Delivery Framework, which include measures of quality, referral to treatment times, cancer, cardiac, delayed transfers of care, accident and emergency, ambulance response times, public health, and mental health indicators.

09:30–10:15Highlights of High Performance EMDBrett Patterson

This session is designed to provide EMDs, ED-Qs, supervisors and engaged managers an appreciation for their critical role in Sudden Cardiac Arrest survival by relating the basic “why” (research and physiology) to the “how” (MPDS v13) of high performance CPR in dispatch. Critical thinking and situational awareness and explores some potential impact areas of the MPDS that many agencies are not taking advantage of. The critical role of quality improvement versus basic auditing and EMD performance versus EMD compliance.

10:30–11:15Aeromedical and National Emergency Ops OverviewCathal Keaveney, Martin Keenan

This presentation gives a detailed look at the operations of the Aeromedical Desk within the National Emergency Ops Centre and the technology used to locate people in search and rescue missions. This session also covers the operations of the NEOC sites within the National Ambulance Service of Ireland.

11:15-12:00Let’s Get Ready to RumbleJason Beese, Peter Keating

Ever thought a colleague was spoiling for a fight with a caller? Ever felt like a colleague was looking to start a fight with you or another colleague? Ever feel like you are itching for a fight? This session will look at the mindsets that lead to this confrontation and discuss ways to minimise the impact on ourselves, our patients, and our colleagues.

13:00–13:45Changing TechnologyAndy Heward

Technology is changing the way we communicate. The world is becoming a smaller place. Different generations have different expectations. Emergency services are really good at embracing and implementing Next Gen infrastructure such as IP telephony, cloud-based services, and resilient platforms, BUT are we as good at embracing incoming Next Gen call types? Are we meeting public expectations? Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, SMS, and “The Internet of Things”—what comes next? Importantly, how do we make sure communication flows?

14:00–14:45The 10 Most Deadly ConditionsJohn Kilroe

This session will present the 10 most deadly conditions (medical and trauma) from across the world according to WHO data and look at the physiology behind them including the whys and hows, e.g., why you might have pains in your left arm when you are having a heart attack. Then we’ll discuss how the Medical Protocol and the tools within MPDS identify these conditions.

15:15–16:00What’s Happened to my Body?Dominick McNabb

A lot of research and talks have been presented on the emotional difficulties and stresses of processing emergency calls. In this session we’ll explore some of the physical problems associated with a career spent sitting at a busy workstation and what can be done to make it better.

16:15–17:00The Big Fat NAVIGATOR QuizJason Beese, Peter Keating

Following up on last year’s quiz, this will be a fun session where you can show off your knowledge and win some prizes. Do you have what it takes? Are you ready for the UK NAVIGATOR Quiz Part II?
