NEW DELHI, Mar 9:

The United Kingdom'sHome Secretary has recentlyreferred India's request forextraditing PNB scam accusedNirav Modi to a court for initiat-ing legal proceedings againstthe diamantaire, theEnforcement Directorate saidtoday.

"Request for extradition ofNirav Modi to India was sentin July 2018 to the UK. TheUK Central Authority ofHome Office has confirmedthat the extradition request hasbeen sent to the WestminsterMagistrate Court for the dis-trict judge for further proceed-ings," the agency said in astatement.

A British daily today report-ed that Nirav Modi, accused inthe USD 2-billion PunjabNational Bank (PNB) scam, isliving in a swanky 8-millionpound apartment in London'sWest End and is now involvedin a new diamond business.

Sources in the EnforcementDirectorate (ED) said they hadbeen officially informed aboutUK Home Secretary SajidJavid's move to forward the caseto a London court about twodays back.

The move takes the processof extraditing and bringing backNirav Modi to face the law inIndia to the next stage, thesources said.

Soon, they said, a joint teamof the ED and the CentralBureau of Investigation (CBI)would travel to the UK toapprise the lawyers about theIndian case and evidenceagainst Nirav Modi, in a similarfashion that was done in the caseof another absconding bank-fraud accused, Vijay Mallya.

The ED and the CBI areinvestigating Nirav Modi, hisuncle Mehul Choksi and othersfor alleged money launderingand corruption to perpetrate thealleged scam in the BradyHouse branch of the PNB inMumbai that was unearthed lastyear.

Nirav Modi, 48, is currentlyliving in a three-bedroom flatoccupying half of a floor of thelandmark Centre Point towerblock in London, where rent isestimated to cost 17,000 poundsa month, The Telegraph report-ed.

The revelation comes a dayafter Nirav Modi's 30,000 sq ftseaside mansion at Kihim beachin Maharashtra's Raigad districtwas demolished by authoritiesusing explosives for alleged vio-lation of coastal regulation

rules.The Ministry of External

Affairs (MEA) also reacted onthe issue of Nirav Modi's extra-dition, saying the UK was still

considering India's request.India is taking all steps nec-

essary for his extradition, anMEA spokesperson saidSaturday.(PTI)
