3. Training setup in each country

Portugal

The training the trainers’ phase (WP5) was successfully implemented in Portugal with 5 participants, 3 of which employed in institutions working on a daily basis with seniors and 2 of them working as trainers for seniors in a more independent format. One of the participants is a nurse which stimulates his senior patients with resource to ICT tools. The training in b-learning format run along 11th - 28th of April. Two attending sessions were held, one at the beginning and the other at the end, and in between participants have performed individual work. The e-learning component consisted in accessing the UISEL Moodle platform and going through the contents module by module, besides exploring the app and the game for the seniors’ learning. The attending sessions were animated by Cláudia Azevedo (VC team).

The Immersion session consisted in the presentation of the UISEL project, a brief introduction to the contents and the platform allowing time for short group exploration. It was followed by an informal discussion about the materials produced and the participants’ expectations. The closing session was meant to collect feedback from the participants and select the trainers with interest and availability to pass to the next phase – the seniors’ training. These trainers proposed an individual plan for implementation. A Certificate of Participation was delivered to each participant.

Italy

In Italy the training the trainers has involved 8 participants (4 members of ANS and 4 external) working in the following sectors: clinical psychology at the University and training/leisure activities for people with mental disabilities (G. Casu), Italian language course for migrants (R. Barberini), eldelry social clubs management (I. Giovanardi), Third Age education (G. Olivieri). The criteria used by ANS to have these experts involved were their area of expertise and their previous involvement on local, national and European initiatives carried out by the cooperative. It’s important to remark that trainers work in different geograhic areas: Carpi, Bologna, Reggio Emilia and Verona, which is a relevant factor considering the dissemination and exploitation of the project results.

Another important information concerning the target group is their working status, except from Gabriele Olivieri who is pensioner, the others work for other companies/ institutions. This factor was taken into account during the planification of the „group sessions“ in which the virtual or physical trainers‘presence was required. Anyway the choice to organize this course in a blended modality and to let trainers the possibility to follow the majority of the sessions from their own place was appreciated a lot.

The training the trainers was organized as follow: two initial sessions were set up through skype (one on the 19th and on the 20th of March). From the 20th of March till the 23th of April trainers had the possibility to access the Moodle platform and the Uisel Game App by using their personal accounts. They could also download all the training material (expect from the videos) and go through it directly from their PC/tablet. On the 7th of April the majority of them attended the virtual lecture delivered by Federica Mazzocchi. The final section was organized on the 24th of April, and this time all the trainers were invited to ANS’s offices for exchange of ideas and comments on the training course: content and technologies used.

The first initial session held on the 19th of March at 16.30 through skype, involved the following trainers: Serena D’Angelo, Federica Mazzocchi, Rita Seneca and Gabriele Olivieri. The second initial session held on the 20th of March involved the following trainers: Serena D’Angelo, Licia Boccaletti, Giulia Casu, Isabella Giovanardi and Roberta Barberini. After a first presentation of the participants, Serena illustrated the project aims, activities and the training the trainers organizations focusing on: the Uisel game, the modules structures, the supporting material and the procedures to access the Uisel platform. During the second phase of the meeting, each participant was invited to visit the platform with a special attention to the basic module, and went through the materials for at least 30 minutes. At the end they filled in a document reporting their expectations from the course and the first feedback from the material they had explored. The material has been considered very rich and well structured.

Their expectations were registered and are presented. The majority of the trainers expected from the training to learn (1) pedagogical strategies to teach to people aged over 50, (2) skills within the lifelong learning through multimedia tools and (3) technical knowledge on the use of tablet. In fact, although all trainers own a tablet not all of them know the Mobile device in detail. Some others expected to find learning material that, after

UISEL: Ubiquitous Information for SEniors Life 539730-LLP-1-2013-1-PT-GRUNDTVIG-GMP

some adequate adaptations, could be transferable to other target groups such as mentally ill people. Concerning the comments, it’s important to remark that the Moodle platform was perceived as very easy to use and very well structured. For example the fact that the material of a module is completely visualized within one page gives immediately the trainers the general idea of the course content and organisation. Some trainers suggested changing the order of the 4 modules according to their complexity (the introductory module should be put in the first position). Moreover trainers considered the topics treated within the modules very relevant for the selected target group. Finally, concerning the UISEL game the opinion was very positive; the only suggestion regards the possibility to let users free to choose the exercise they need to practice the most instead than oblige them to go through all of them in the established sequence.

After having visualized and practiced the whole material during one-month period, trainers attended the final session. The meeting held on the 24th of April at ANS‘ premises, lasted about two hours and involved the following trainers: Serena D’Angelo, Federica Mazzocchi, Rita Seneca, Giulia Casu, Isabella Giovanardi, Roberta Barberini and Licia Boccaletti, unfortunately for health problems Gabriele Olivieri could not participate. The moderator illustrated the main findings that came up from the initial expectations, and the trainers enreached them with new feedback.

Austria

The Train-the-Trainer phase in Austria was organized in three steps: A train-the-trainer Workshop at the Institute for Sociology, Vienna for all interested partners, participation in an online lecture by Franz Kolland on the 28th of April, and a follow-up meeting with the trainers selected to participate as trainers in WP6.

The initial Train-the-Trainer Workshop at the Institute for Sociology was held on April 10th, 2015. Twelve trainers from six organizations, each active in the field of senior education and new technologies, were invited. 7 trainers from 3 different organizations participated in the workshop. The workshop was held at the Institute for Sociology, Vienna from 09:30 until 15:30 including a one-hour lunch break for all participants. Trainers were given information on main topics of the UISEL project and course, but were also invited to browse through the UISEL contents (e.g. platform for trainers, UISEL Game) and collect feedback and topics for discussion. The topics were collected and used as a basis for several group discussions on the UISEL contents. The workshop covered the following topics:

• Introduction to the UISEL project: Aims, Background, Methods • The UISEL Pedagogical Model • Structure of the UISEL Course • German UISEL Contents: e-Government/Information, e-Interaktion/Kommunikation,

e-Unterhaltung/Medien, Basismodul • The UISEL platform for trainers, UISEL Game and e-Learning App, UISEL

YouTube-Channel • Discussion and feedback of the pedagogical contents • “Lifelong Learning and Seniors’ Education” – Lecture by Ao. Univ. Prof. Dr. Franz

Kolland

After the first workshop, the train-the-trainer process in Austria continued in two steps: Firstly, the trainers were asked to go through the UISEL contents individually, which were available at the UISEL platform and attend the 2nd Online lecture by Prof. Dr. Franz Kolland (Topic: “Benefits of Learning in Later Life”) on 10:00 CET 28th April, 2015. Secondly, the Austrian project team set up individual follow-up meetings with trainers selected to participate in WP6. These follow-up meetings were organized partly in Vienna, partly via Skype. The dates of the follow-up meetings:

• Aktives Zentrum Wien (Christa Witz, Waltraud Lukasser, Godana Kovalij): 5th May 2015, 15:00 CET

• SeniorenColleg Wien (Karin Niederhofer): 12th May 2015, 09:30 CET • NOWA Graz (Susanne Gaulhofer): 15th May 2015, 17:00 CET

All the participants in the workshop were asked to participate in WP6 and train seniors using the UISEL materials. Trainers’ reactions were mixed, although all of them agreed

UISEL: Ubiquitous Information for SEniors Life 539730-LLP-1-2013-1-PT-GRUNDTVIG-GMP

that the topics that UISEL is covering are important. The greatest problem for most of the trainers was the short timeframe the course should cover, arguing that May-September is of very short notice to organize a course and that in summer months it is especially difficult to find senior participants. Generally, the feedback to the invitation was rather positive, with five of seven trainers showing interest in further cooperation. Trainers who were interested in future cooperation were asked to deliver a list of participants and dates for the UISEL course in a follow-up E-Mail. Finally four trainers from three organizations decided to pilot the UISEL course in different formats.

The training the trainers’ phase was successfully implemented in Slovakia by partner FPPS. The training in b-learning format run from 23th to 30th of April with 5 participants. The attending sessions, initial and closing meetings, were held in Prievidza at FPPS’s office and the training was conducted by Jana Piačeková.

The first meeting started at 10:30 until 15:00 including one-hour lunch break for all participants. The UISEL project was introduced, its aims, methodology, background and structure of the course. This was followed by a short discussion to collect the participants’ first impressions. Then the Moodle platform was presented, participants logged in and went through the learning materials. The UISEL pedagogical model and contents were discussed, namely the specific modules, game and videos which will be used for self-learning. After a one-hour lunch break, their feedback was collected in non-formal way and WP6 was also presented in order to leave time for the participants to consider their interest

UISEL: Ubiquitous Information for SEniors Life 539730-LLP-1-2013-1-PT-GRUNDTVIG-GMP

in getting further involved. After the first session the trainers went through the UISEL materials on an individual basis. The second and closing meeting started at 12:30 until 15:00. The group was organized and discussed about the modules, the videos and game and a few questions were answered. After the coffee break, the feedback and improvement suggestions were registered. Finally 3 trainers were selected according to their interest and availability to participate as trainers in the seniors’ training phase.

The training of trainers’ (WP5) was successfully implemented in Prague, the Czech Republic. It run on Wednesdays at 15h, from 8th to 21th of April in b-learning format. Two workshops have been organized on 10th March (previous to the training formal start) and on 28th April (for evaluation purposes). A total of six persons attended the course, including the lecturer. There were 2 participants from partner ZIVOT90, 2 from NGOs Elpida, 1 participant from NGO Repromat and 1 NGO participant, expert and lecturer of

UISEL: Ubiquitous Information for SEniors Life 539730-LLP-1-2013-1-PT-GRUNDTVIG-GMP

trainers from the NGO Diakonie, Lifetool Prague. All participants had different experiences in training seniors.

The first meeting focused on presenting the UISEL project - Why the project was created? What are its goals? Then the focus was on the methodology - How we learn? About the methodology we have dismantled the role of coach - by 8 geragogical principles, the structure of the participants - what type of clients most likely would be in the course. We have worked well what would be the most suitable environment for learning and teaching our clients. What the advantages and pitfalls of offering a combination of teaching in class and at home, therefore, through e-learning.

The training took place in the premises of the NGO Život 90, classrooms in Prague, where all the necessary ICT equipment and refreshments were provided. As technical resources were used PowerPoint presentation, tablets, a projector and connection to wifi. Each participant got their own tablet to practice lent by NGO Život 90, still some participants used their own tablets. During the lecture we have to transfer the image from the lecturer’s tablet directly at the projector, so everyone could clearly see what was happening. We spent plenty of time describing forms of instruction divided into modules, time schedule and content modules and lessons. In the first block of instruction of trainers we had planned to discuss in detail the first two lessons - Basic module and e-interaction and e-communication. In Basic module the UISEL app game was explored for training gesture and touches on tablet, which was considered very interesting and trainers appreciated it. In second block of instruction of trainers we had planned to discuss in detail the second two modules – e-government and e-entertainment.

About WP6 planning: All 6 trainers, including the one who delivered the training accepted to go further and train the seniors in their respective organizations. ZIVOT90´s project staff will monitor the implementation in each training place.

Spain

The training the trainers’ phase (WP5) was successfully implemented in Granada, Spain, from 13th of April to 4th of May in blended learning format. Due to scheduling problems we had to make two working groups, and in each of them we did two sessions, one at the beginning (13th of April with 4 trainers and 20th of April with 2 of them) and one more at the end of the training phase (27th of April and 4th of May). These sessions were held in the “Virtual Learning Centre” of the University of Granada and each session had duration of about 2 hours. The face-to face sessions were coordinated by Pedro Cano (APFA team) and in two of them also participated Juan Carlos Maroto (APFA team) as collaborator. There were 6 participants: 4 form the University of Granada and 2 ICT trainer volunteers from the Day Centre "San Ildefonso" at the City Council of Granada.

In the first face-to-face session with each group we made a short presentation of the UISEL project, we show the developed contents for the training, we presented the learning platform that trainers would use at this stage to access all materials and the training phase was planned.

There was then a period of two weeks to let the trainers review all the materials using the Moodle e-learning platform, through which we were in contact to answer any questions that may arise. After this two weeks period of individual work by the trainers, a new face-to-face meeting was carried out to discuss their opinions, propose any improvements or corrections and plan the training phase with the seniors (WP6). It was decided that all the trainers will participate in WP6, working in different groups with senior students to cover a greater number of participants.

The implementation plan for WP6 is presented below:

4. Assessment by the trainers/caretakers

The participants’ opinions and improvement suggestions were collected through group discussion around four evaluation topics pre-defined:

ü Learning Platform: navigation, interface, overall layout

ü App for the seniors

ü UISEL Game

ü Contents: ease of understanding, technical quality, suitability of the activities proposed, adequacy of the time expected to follow the contents and perform the activities, appropriateness to national contexts, comments on specific modules (if any)

1. Moodle Platform

General comments:

All the trainers considered it clear, well structured, simple, with intuitive interface. It was

also noticed that it contains just the MOODLE functions relevant for the training which

focuses the attention on the needed information. For many of them it was not the first

contact with the Moodle platform, and so they feel comfortable in using it and considered it

a good option for the training the trainers course. Trainers from ES even proposed to use it

in the training phase with seniors to allow students to access all the material together and

to use the collaboration tools offered to share experiences and stay in contact with

colleagues and tutors.

Improvement suggestions:

• The documents should be available on the platform setting its appearance on

embed displaying (IT)

UISEL: Ubiquitous Information for SEniors Life 539730-LLP-1-2013-1-PT-GRUNDTVIG-GMP

2. UISEL App for the seniors

General comments:

General appreciation was positive, considering that it will be available in local languages. It was mentioned that including the PPTs (even if these materials were not specifically designed for the seniors) was a good option as seniors appreciate to have access to as much readable information as possible.

Improvement suggestions:

• Would be better to group the videos according to the units of each module. Some

modules, e.g. Introductory, contain many videos and trainees can get confused.

(IT)

3. Uisel game App

General comments:

Well designed, similar to video-games. The UISEL game was perceived to be good

entertainment and a smooth learning activity for the beginning of the UISEL course. It is an

interesting tool to support the first steps for people who have not worked with tablets

before. It will help developing certain gesture skills in the seniors.

Improvement suggestions:

• Maybe it can be better to make the general menu visible from the beginning so that

trainees can choose which exercise to practice the most; It is not clear how to exit.

(IT)

• The game might be too long or should at least have information on the number of

levels and a possibility to pause the game and continue afterwards. (AT)

• The game is quite long and it´s not possible to stop and continue later. But the

worst issue is that we can´t stop the game in normal way. When we want to quit we

have to switch off our tablets. It can be very confusing for our seniors. (SK)

• Introduce the possibility to rewind/forward, to pause any time and to finish at the

end (PT)

• Trainers believe that it`s a bit slow. Perhaps too many steps are repeated. (ES)

UISEL: Ubiquitous Information for SEniors Life 539730-LLP-1-2013-1-PT-GRUNDTVIG-GMP

4. The Contents

General comments:

The contents were generally very much appreciated, inspiring most of the trainers to use it in their regular work with the seniors. They believe the course will capture the seniors’ attention and motivate them to go on learning.

Contents are considered to be well structured and complete, and the activities appropriate and well placed as final examples to assimilate the studied concepts. The tools supporting the exercises to be performed at home are clear and detailed with all the steps illustrated in a good and adequate way. The language used is appropriate for the seniors and the topics addressed are suitable and useful for them.

Another positive highlight is the set of videos that support the autonomous work at home. IT trainers considered that the videos are well structured, the audio is clear and that the speed of the actions is adequate to the target group. On the other hand trainers from some other countries noticed that a few improvements would be appreciated concerning these resources which are expressed below in the improvement suggestions.

Although the majority of the units have an adequate balance among the quantity of information to be taught and the lesson duration, there are some worries at this level expressed below in the improvement suggestions. However trainers described the flexible structure of the UISEL course positively, which opens the possibility to shorten or extend single units or modules.

Improvement suggestions:

• Several trainers think that the time dedicated to each face-to-face session (2h) may be insufficient, especially in some units where content can be more complex. (ES)

• Insufficient time for some units, especially if totally unknown by the seniors, for example Online Security or Apps. Seniors need more time to understand certain aspects, concepts, functionality and also need a lot of repetition. (RO)

• In some cases they plan to simplify the material (encapsulate), while in other cases they think the material is too much comprehensive. (CZ)

• About the length of the training material and the proposed schedule, in some cases was considered that more than 2h could be necessary to introduce some of the units to senior citizens non familiar with the topics, such as Facebook, but this should not be the case of all the units. (PT)

• Length of the contents. Trainers all agreed that each module covers too much content to be taught in eight hours. Each unit should be reduced drastically in the topics it is discussing. This is especially important for the basis module. (AT)

• E-Banking: Units 2 and 3 are too rich of information; they should be split in more units. e-communication: Unit 1 contains too many concepts, maybe 2 hours won’t be enough to complete it (IT)

• Concerning the videos would be useful to highlight the steps along the voice recording to facilitate the seniors’ learning and that the voice could be a bit louder. (PT)

• One of the trainers commented that the human image used in the PPTs reduces readability in some slides. (PT)

• The videos have been recorded too fast considering the target group and that many websites shown in the guides are in English and therefore will be necessary to find alternative websites in national language. (CZ)

• Was recommended integrating questions of online security in every unit or module instead of addressing the topic in a separate unit as questions of online security are important in every unit. (AT). On the other hand PT Trainers highlighted as positive aspect the fact that online security is a transversal issue mentioned in more than one module.

• There are some slides that can be confusing: website of Uisel within unit1, Basic Module and Paypal functioning slide within e-banking module (too many arrows). Material related to „subito.it“ have some inaccuracies on the titles (IT)

• Seniors should not be pushed to create a Gmail account, as for instance most of them already use other accounts, ex. Seznam.cz. (CZ)

• Some exercises are very specific (i.e. how to recharge a mobile phone, functionalities of the online „poste“account. It’s important to give always a general example. (IT)

• About the e-Government module some trainers doubt of their interest for the seniors, specifically the unit referring to European websites. (CZ). AT Trainers expressed the same thought.

• Besides the topics covered in the course, a few trainers mentioned additional topics which should be relevant: Possibilities of printing from tablets, safe search-engines and alternatives to Google but most importantly basic settings of the Samsung tablets. Was also suggested the integration of a glossary, which explains important vocabulary for tablets use. (AT)

• Introductory: Maybe it could be important to make a general introduction on the different ways a tablet can be connected to the Internet (sim, wireless, etc.). Some definitions are not very useful for the course target such as: hardware, software, etc. (IT)

• It’s important to take into account that some trainees can have an Ipad, so trainers should be able to give some references (the setting icon in Android is…. while in iOS system is….just to let people understand that the logic is very similar). (IT)

• We agreed it might be confusing for seniors if they see one type of tablet on the video when they have different type of it in their hands. That is why we should show them individually, to each one of them, what “the main buttons” are and explain

symbols they can find on other electronic device such as or so they will be able to understand the connection. (CZ)

5. Additional considerations for the WP6 phase

§ Number of participants. Some trainers argued that the groups of seniors should be

limited as each trainee always needs support from the trainer. AT trainers define as

maximum 8 people, while ES trainers believe 10 people would be a good number, and

agreed to have larger groups (up to 20) but always with 2 trainers working in class.

§ Follow-up sessions. It was suggested by the AT Trainers to plan the organization of a

follow-up meeting two weeks after the UISEL course, in which participants could share

experiences and raise new questions.

§ Assessment and Evaluation. The development of a final exercise to be completed by

the trainees at the end of the course was proposed. Also the inclusion of an external

observer can be very useful in order to collect feedback and difficulties trainees may

have during the class, knowing that teachers will be too busy to record all the

comments and problems. And finally the application of a check list in order to give the

trainees the possibility to self-evaluate their skills before and after the training course.

All these suggested by the IT Trainers.

“Everything was very productive, inspiring and rewarding.”

5. Conclusions

v The Moodle Platform and the UISEL App were positively appreciated with just a suggestion for improvement each which should be easy to implement.

v The UISEL Game App needs to be upgraded as there are specific features that are not working properly, and that might create difficulties for the seniors to use it. It should include: a) an initial menu with the different activities allowing selection or info about the levels, and b) the possibility to pause, rewind, forward and exit at any time.

v The Contents are generally very much appreciated, some improvements are suggested although. Most of them can be considered for further developments, instead of immediate corrections. Besides some corrections/improvements proposed for specific contents/topics, would be important to consider that: a) some modules/units need to be rebalanced in terms of the quantity of information to be taught and the lesson duration, b) the supporting tools (videos, guides) for autonomous work could be improved but this is valid only for some countries as it is a result of the localization process, c) the inclusion of additional topics was proposed, specially for the Introductory module to help better understanding of the tablet usage, d) a solution should be discussed concerning the difficulties that may arise from using different operative systems.

v About WP6 planning, trainers recommend to: a) keep the number of participants per group limited, b) organize follow-up meetings with each group 2 weeks after the training, and c) implement an evaluation process which should include a final exercise per module, a check-list to be filled in by the seniors at the beginning and then at the end, and an observer from the local partner team registering feedback and impressions of each group along the training.
