Uganda Martyrs University THE PREMIER CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY IN UGANDA
Why study @ UMU
Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) is a faith-based private, not-for-profit University, owned by
the Episcopal Conference of Catholic Bishops of Uganda. The University was officially
launched on 18th October 1993 by His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of the
Republic of Uganda. UMU received a Charter from the Government of Uganda on 2nd April
2005.
In her 26 years of existence, Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) has developed into a reputable
institution in the region. In 2016, given her track record of excellence and making a difference in
society, UMU, through a very competitive process was selected by the World Bank to host the
African Centre of Excellence in Agro-ecology and Livelihood Systems. At the same time, UMU
hosts a UN Centre of Expertise for Mainstreaming Education for Sustainable Development in
Uganda. UMU is a leading Private Chartered University in the East African Region, with a
student population of over 5050.
UMU: An Ideal Place for Academic engagement
UMU is located along the Equator on the shores of Lake Victoria which is a direct link with the
‘centre of the world’, with an environmentally friendly campus ideal for study, learning and
reflection. Students are able to compound their academic experience with touristic adventures as
they stand at the very point where the northern and the southern hemispheres cross.
Internationally connected
UMU has academic alliances with complementary institutions in the region, Asia, Europe, the
Middle East and the Americas. These alliances support academic relationships and enhance
educational opportunities for staff, students and those undertaking advanced research. Some of
these include Kenyatta University in Kenya and St. Mary’s University Halifax, Canada;
Katholieke Universteit Nijmegen, Netherlands; and the University of Notre Dame, USA.

GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Postgraduate Programmes: At least a Second Class Honours degree from recognized
Institutions in a relevant field or in exceptional circumstances, professional qualifications will be
required. Candidates are required to pass the UMU Graduate Admission Test (GAT) and have
at least two years of working experience in the relevant field.
Undergraduate Programmes: Minimum of Two (2) Principle Passes in the Uganda Advanced
Certificate of Education obtained at the same sitting, or its equivalent. Diploma holders with at
least a Credit or 2nd Class are also invited to apply. For all those applying for distance learning,
relevant certified Academic Documents are required.
Diploma Programmes: Minimum requirement is One (1) Principle Pass in the Uganda
Advanced Certificate of Education in the subjects relevant to the programme applied for, or
Certificate holders with at least a Credit or 2nd Class in related field. And should have obtained at
least Five (5) Passes in the Uganda Certificate of Education at one sitting or its equivalent

APPLICATION FEES
A non-refundable fee of Ugx.50,000 for both Undergraduates and Postgraduates (excluding bank
charges) should be paid on submission of the Application Form.
HALF-TUITION BURSARIES
Half-Tuition Bursaries are available for SOME FULL TIME Programmes at all UMU Campuses
except Lubaga and Nsambya.
Please receive Half-Tuition Bursary recommendation from your Bishop, Superior General, Head
Teacher and LC 5 Chairperson as indicated on the Scholarship Form.
NOTE
UMU has intakes in August and January, and the deadlines for receiving application forms for
the August Intake is 31st July and for the January Intake is 31st December.
Tuition and Functional fees are paid per semester (twice in a year)
