ST. MARY PARISH WORSHIP PROCEDURES as of May 30, 2020

These rules comply with State regulations, Archdiocesan Requirements and our Church’s physical plan allowing for the safe and rever-ent celebration of the Holy Eucharist.

PLANNING/PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP CELEBRATIONS 1. Edgar Escobar Cleaning Co, a professional cleaning company, disinfected and cleaned the Church. (May 20-21, 2020) 2. The previous Mass schedule has been adjusted to comply with occupancy requirements (400 people maximum occupancy). The

Mass at 11:00 AM normally exceeds 400 people, so we are adding a Mass in Spanish on Sunday evenings at 6:00 PM. Average attendance at all other Masses is normally substantially below 400 people. Masses at St. Charles chapel remain suspended until a later date.

3. The lower church hall is now ready to be used as an overflow church when the upper church reaches its seating capacity. A priest is ready to celebrate this overflow Mass when necessary.

4. Our custodian has changed his weekday hours to work on Sundays. He will lead a team cleaning church and bathrooms between Masses.

5. A team of volunteers has been trained to provide assistance and direction at all Masses. 6. Rehearsals to test procedures have taken place from May 18-May 22. 7. Traffic patterns and designated seating areas have been created with rope, caution tape and floor markers to ensure physical dis-

tancing. 8. Signs and markers posted; holy water fonts emptied (3/20); hymnals removed (3/20); suspended communal chalice (3/20); upper

and lower level windows opened; doors set ajar where possible; new stations and procedures designated for hand sanitizing, offer-tory baskets and Holy Communion have been put in place.

9. Lectors, sacristan and priests have been trained for new procedures regarding Mass preparation and clean-up. One lector, instead of two, will read at Mass.

10. Extraordinary Ministers of Communion, altar servers and choir members have been notified that their schedules are suspended until further notice.

11. Access for disabled and handicapped worshippers has been included in all planning. 12. One accessible entrance (the front center door) is designated for all worshippers. An usher will use a counter to monitor number of

worshippers. Side doors have been designated as exits. 13. Created comprehensive procedures for seating, physical movement, mask wearing, distancing and worship response requirements,

reception of Holy Communion, and exiting church and property that will be explained before and during services. 14. Fulfilled requirements of both the state and the Archdiocesan checklists for opening 15. Received permission of Regional Bishop, Bishop Robert Reed, to begin public worship on May 23. 16. Planned staff meeting on Monday to review weekend procedures/policies. 17. Alternative confessionals have been established

WORSHIPPERS’ PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITIES/OBLIGATIONS 1. Worshippers who are ill, have a cold or are recovering from sickness must not attend worship services. 2. Must wear a mask and follow directions. The Archdiocesan guidelines say that those with medical or breathing issues can decide

not to wear them though they must be worn when moving around the Church. 3. Avoid touching surfaces when possible. 4. We recommend each person carry sanitizing wipes for personal use. 5. Maintain distance of 6 feet from one another. 6. Be on time for Mass; remain until end of Mass to maintain social distancing when exiting Church and in parking lot. 7. Maintain the Eucharistic Fast of at least one hour before Mass. This diminishes the need to use restrooms during Mass. 8. USE YOUR OWN BATHROOM BEFORE LEAVING YOUR HOME; REQUIRE CHILDREN TO DO THE SAME.

ACCESSIBILITY NEEDS We ask that worshippers who require extra time to depart the Church at the end of Mass to wait until all others have departed the build-ing. You can either exit the side doors or exit by using the front center doors with the ramp. Anyone needing assistance to find a seat can ask the usher to lead you to a suitable seat for your needs.

ST. CHARLES CHAPEL Reopening of St. Charles will begin gradually as soon as possible. The small size and occupancy capacity make it more difficult to im-plement the changes. The average age of the worshipping population makes everyone more vulnerable. We have concerns for the usual celebrant, Fr. Regan, and the Jesuit Community of Campion Center. We need to open one physical plant and make sure that it is work-ing safely before we open a second site.

REMINDERS 1. Entry to Church will remain the same. 2. The long period of announcements will not be repeated this

weekend. 3. Homily will be available on parish website. 4. Donations can be dropped in baskets at entrance and exits. 5. Communion will be streamlined and made easier. Directions

will be given just before Communion. 6. The bathroom is only for emergencies. Worshippers must exit

the church and go to the bathroom in lower hall, then re-enter the church through front center door. People with disabilities and needing extra help can ask the usher at side door for Church bathroom access.

MASS COUNTS FOR MAY 31 A total of 579 people attended Masses: SATURDAY 4:00 PM – 77 people

SUNDAY 9:00 AM – 103 people 11:00 AM – 260 people 1:00 PM – 33 people 6:00 PM – 56 people

VOLUNTEER USHERS (TOTAL) – 50

My brothers and sisters in Christ, Last weekend 579 worshippers attended the five Masses at St. Mary Church for Pentecost Sunday. This is a slight increase from last weekend. That is a good sign for a community. Slow but steady growth is, in my estimate, a much better sign of vitality and long term stability than sudden bursts of growth. It has been the way we have grown as a community and family over the past few years. The response from the faithful of the parish – from the time in March when public worship services were suspended until today – gives me hope that we will sail like a ship through the stormy waters; with the help of the God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit we will reach the safe harbor. The pandemic has required all of us to adjust and be flexible in being faithful Christians. For the priests, and all of us, it means remembering that there are still many who are homebound and cannot return to Church yet. We will try to keep reaching out to those who are homebound so they do not remain isolated. We are also trying to remember that while the numbers of infected persons declines, there are still many who are sick and need our prayers. We are also reminded that we have to keep thinking of how to educate, catechize and form the young people especially if the schools do not reopen in September. The current days marked by anger, resentment, violence, fear, divi-sion, abuse and lack of leadership remind us more than ever of the need to be taught and formed in the ways of the Holy Spirit! The education of the heart is needed if we are truly to become one in love. For God so loved the world that he sent His only Son... Happy Trinity Sunday! – Father Michael

Fr. Joseph waits outside where confessions are heard during the usual scheduled times. In case of inclement weather, confessions

move inside near the piano.

PLEASE PRAY FOR . . . Ruth, Carlos and Ernestina Echeverria, all the sick and suffering.

Note: If you want a name added or removed from the sick list, please email or call the parish office.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL As we celebrate the mystery of the Trinity we also realize the mystery of how much God loves and cares for us each day. Be-lieving in this our lives can then overflow in thanksgiving and praise.

Your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box will help the poor to believe in the mystery of God’s love for them.

O Holy Trinity, three Persons in one, we pray, keep us in the cir-cle of your love. All peoples of the earth, created in God’s image, may we work toward reconciliation and peace. For married cou-ples, parents, and children, may their mutual love be a reflection of your love. For all of us gathered together, may our love and service bear witness to God’s care. For all who share in the faith of the Catholic Church, may we grow in unity, peace and truth. Amen.

THANK YOU CHILDREN With the return of Sunday Masses, many children of the parish, have started to bring their Lenten Sacrifice Bowls to the Church. On Ash Wednesday, the children were asked to save their money that they would spend on themselves for other children in need. So far over $600 has been collected. Most of this money will go towards paying the annual expenses for a young orphan girl in Guatemala who has been adopted by the children in the Catechet-ical and After School Programs. The young girl, Vilma, will be able to stay at the orphanage for the next year because of this Lenten sacrifice.

AD MULTOS ANNOS On June 9th, Father Regan will celebrate his 93rd Birthday. Give thanks to God for this man; for his service, his witness, his faith, and his youth. He is turning 93 but he has more youth and vigor than many 20 year olds. For parishioners unfamiliar with Fr. Re-gan, he has been celebrating Mass at St. Charles for many years. He was brought to the parish through his brother Fr. David Bol-ton. Happy Birthday Fr. Regan. Anyone who would like to send him a birthday card can mail it to: Rev. Robert Regan S.J., Cam-pion Center, 319 Concord Road Weston MA 02493.

CHURCH CLEANING TEAM Although we have a team of people cleaning the church and bath-rooms between weekend Masses, there are other times when we will need this cleaning to be done – such as after a funeral or oth-er event. We want to put together a team of people who are will-ing to clean the church and bathroom on an on-call basis. Clean-ing supplies would be provided. If you are interested, please email or call the parish office.

UGANDA MARTYRS FEAST 2020 The celebrations in Uganda have been cancelled because of the pandemic. Normally we celebrate the memory of the Martyrs with pomp and ceremony on the Sunday closest to the actual feast day of June 3rd. Usually a bishop and many priests travel from Africa to be with us; the dancers and choirs prepare months in advance. We couldn’t have such a big and ceremonious celebra-tion this year, but we still celebrated the Holy Eucharist with fer-vor and prayer. An evening Mass was celebrated by Bishop Rob-ert Reed at St. Mary’s on June 3rd. St. Charles Lwanga and the Uganda Martyrs pray for us.

SAINT MARY’S WEBSITE - WHAT’S NEW? https://www.stmarywaltham.org/ Our parish website continues to grow and change to bring you not only the latest parish updates but also some teachings and series that will help strengthen your faith. We have recently finished the series featuring the Lives of the Uganda Martyrs and added the audio recordings of the Book of Tobit; these are in addition to the Beauty that will save video series and the audio recordings of the Acts of the Apostles. Soon we will be condensing the audio re-cordings from the Bible into a single home page entitled “Audio Bible” from which you can access the Acts of the Apostles, the Book of Tobit and all future scripture recordings (the Gospel of Matthew is coming soon!) Please visit the website often!
