Community spiritLiving in University accommodation is a great way to startyour University career. You will have the chance to meetfellow University of Leeds students following differentcourses of study, helping you to expand your social circleand widen your interests. As well as joining in with thesocial activities at your residence, you can get the sociallife you want by standing for election to the Residents’Committee which organises events and activitiesthroughout term time (except in the Smaller Residences)and represents the interests of fellow residents to theaccommodation staff. You can also take part in the InterHalls Shield, competing against students from differentresidences in a number of different sports (includingbasketball, netball, squash, badminton, hockey andfootball), to become the Inter Halls Sports Champions.

Your welfareEvery residence has one or more wardens (most live onsite) who you can turn to for advice, or for help sorting outany problems. There are also resident subwardens in mostof our residences – usually postgraduate or maturestudents – which means there’s someone there 24 hours aday. Wardens and subwardens also work with thecommittees at each residence to organise sporting andsocial events.

Your safety is paramount to us. All our accommodation iscovered by the Residence Watch scheme and in the eventof an emergency you can contact our Security Services atany time of day or night. In recognition of ourcommitment to keeping you safe, the University of Leedswas one of the first in the country to be awarded anational security standard (the Secured EnvironmentsAccreditation Standard). Your rent also includes insurancefor your personal possessions (terms and conditions apply, see our website for more information). You’re covered bothwhen you’re in your accommodation and when you’retravelling to and from home within the UK at the start andend of each term.

What will it cost?Living in University accommodation is great value formoney. We have a wide range of properties at differentrents and there's something to suit every budget.Accommodation fees for 2010-2011 will be published inApril, but as a guide you can look at our current fees onour website: www.leeds.ac.uk/accommodation/costs.html Rents currently (2009/10) range from £67 (for a smallerroom at North Hill Court) to £153 per week (for a verylarge en-suite room in Lyddon Hall). In University

accommodation there are no hidden extras to pay andthere are a variety of flexible payment methods. Your rentis fully inclusive of all energy and utility charges, andcontents insurance. You will also need to budget for a£200 refundable deposit which you pay on accepting theaccommodation offer.

In all university accommodation you also get 24-hour,high speed internet access and, in most residences, 12 free IPTV channels. You also have peace of mind, knowing that the full range of welfare and securityservices provided by the University is available to youwhilst in residence. Please remember too that, in the unlikely event that you are not happy in youraccommodation, you can move to another vacant room at a different residence from 1st October for just a smalladministration charge - something you can only do inUniversity accommodation.

Getting aroundAll our accommodation is within easy reach of theUniversity and city centre. Some residences are oncampus, others within walking distance, and those furtherafield are close to frequent bus routes. Leeds has anexcellent public transport system, with buses running toand from the city centre until 3am. There are cycle routesalong the main roads and bike storage facilities at mostresidences.

Most of our accommodation has some parking spaces forresidents. However, if you plan to bring a car we’re sorryto say that, because of space restrictions, you won’t beable to park on campus (unless you’re registereddisabled). We actively encourage students and staff tomake use of the great public transport system in place.

How to use this guideThe following pages give you details about all ourresidences to help you make your choices before youapply. There’s also a simple coding system that gives youall the important information at a glance. To help youmake these choices, here are some of the main features:

Catered or Self-catering?One of the key factors in helping you to choose youraccommodation might be based on whether you wantcatered or self-catering. If you don’t want to cook foryourself and like to know that meals during term time willbe ready for you at specific times of the day, cateredaccommodation might suit you best. We have two types ofcatered accommodation: traditional catered facilities canbe found in Bodington Hall and Devonshire Hall, wheremeals are served in the residence dining hall; students incatered halls on campus (i.e. Ellerslie, Lyddon andCharles Morris), receive a meal card with which you can‘purchase’ meals from the newly refurbished Refectory, next to the Union. This method offers you more flexibilityin terms of what you eat and when and gives you thechance to mingle with students from outside your hall. All our catered residences also have kitchen facilities, in case you want to make a snack. The cost of meals is included in the rent.

Most catered residences also have a number of specialformal dinners each year. There’s no extra cost for formaldinners and they’re usually fun events.

There’s at least one vegetarian option at each meal andwhen beef or pork dishes are on the menu an alternativeis always made available. Unfortunately we’re not able toserve Halal, Kosher or vegan food; during Ramadan wecan provide food for you to eat after sunset. If you havespecial dietary requirements (e.g. diabetes) or a foodallergy, we will try to help, but if you are very specificabout the kind of food you eat, you may be more suited toself-catering accommodation.

Self-catering might be better if you like to live life moreindependently. In self-catering residences we providekitchen facilities that you share with a small number ofother residents.

If you follow a vegetarian, Kosher or Halal diet, it’s goodto let us know when you apply – that way we can try tofind you flatmates with similar diets. We are now able tooffer Kosher accommodation in one of our SmallerResidences (see page 17).

Please email Accommodation Services [email protected] for more details.

En-suite or standard room?If having an en-suite room is important to you then most ofour en-suite facilities are in self-catering accommodation.

If you are not in en-suite accommodation, you will usuallyshare bathroom facilities with three to four other people, and in some cases with as few as one other. There’s rarely a queue for the bathroom and sharing facilities can keep costs down.

How to apply We don’t operate a ‘first come first served policy’,therefore it is worth taking the time to consider yourchoices before you apply.

To make the process quicker and more efficient, you applyfor accommodation online atwww.leeds.ac.uk/accommodation/apply.html. If you don’thave access to the internet, don’t worry - you can ring uson 0113 343 7777 or 0870 1200 189 and we’llcomplete your online application for you.
