Match backgroundHaving suffered a first defeat against Lyon, Juventus have work to do on home soil for the second season insuccession to turn round their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie and avoid a first-ever elimination by Frenchopposition in a two-legged European tie.

• Lucas Tousart's first-half goal at the OL Stadium on 26 February earned Lyon their first UEFA Champions Leagueknockout phase victory in eight years, and left Juve once again needing a Turin comeback at this stage.

• The French club have lost their three most recent last-16 ties – and six of their last seven contests at this stage –and have not reached the quarter-finals since 2009/10. Juve have not been eliminated in the last 16 since a 2015/16defeat by Bayern München, their only reverse in their last six appearances at this juncture, and produced a finesecond-leg comeback to progress last season.

Previous meetings• This is the sides' sixth match, all in the last six years. Juve won three of the first four fixtures, with the first leg of thistie OL's sole success against the Bianconeri.

• The teams first met in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League quarter-finals, Leonardo Bonucci scoring the only goal ofthe first leg at Lyon's former home, the Stade de Gerland, five minutes from time. Andrea Pirlo increased Juve'saggregate advantage four minutes into the Turin return and, although Jimmy Briand's 18th-minute strike gave OLhope, a Samuel Umtiti own goal midway through the second half sealed Juventus's place in the semi-finals.

• In the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League group stage Juventus again secured a narrow victory in France, JuanCuadrado getting the only goal with 14 minutes left at the OL Stadium on Matchday 3. The Bianconeri looked set foranother narrow victory at the Juventus Stadium thanks to Gonzalo Higuaín's 13th-minute penalty, but Corentin Tolissoearned Lyon a point with five minutes left.

• Juve went on to finish first in Group H, third-placed Lyon moving into the UEFA Europa League, where they reachedthe semi-finals.

Form guideJuventus• The Bianconeri won five of their six Group D games to finish six points clear at the top. They dropped points only intheir first fixture, Maurizio Sarri's first European game as Juventus coach, being pegged back by two late AtléticoMadrid goals in a 2-2 draw in Spain, but went on to beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in Italy and Lokomotiv Moskva 2-1home and away. A 1-0 home win against Atlético and a 2-0 success at Leverkusen completed the section.

• The loss at Lyon made it four defeats in Juve's last 12 UEFA Champions League matches (W6 D2).

• Gianluigi Buffon's appearance in Leverkusen made him the second oldest player to feature in the UEFA ChampionsLeague, aged 41 years 317 days. The only older participant is another Italian goalkeeper, Marco Ballotta, who playedfor Lazio against Real Madrid in December 2007 aged 43 years 252 days.

• This is Juventus's 11th UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie (W7 L3); they have won the last three, producing amemorable comeback against Atlético last season (0-2 a, 3-0 h) thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo's second-leg hat-trick.

• In 2018/19, under Massimiliano Allegri, Juve finished first in their group and, after turning round their last-16 tieagainst Atlético, drew 1-1 at Ajax in the first leg of their quarter-final only to bow out following a 2-1 home defeat. Thatwas the Bianconeri's second defeat in Turin in last season's competition having lost by the same scoreline againstManchester United on Matchday 4 – the only time Juventus have ever lost more than one home game in a Europeancampaign.

• Last season's win against Atlético is Juve's only success in their last four home UEFA Champions League knockoutmatches (D1 L2).

• Before losing to Real Madrid in the 2017/18 quarter-final first leg (0-3), Juve were unbeaten in 27 home matches inUEFA competition (W16 D11), dating back to a 2-0 reverse against Bayern in April 2013. They have still lost only fourof their 41 European matches at the Juventus Stadium (W25 D12), although three of those defeats have come in theirlast nine matches.

• This is Juve's first two-legged tie against a French club since they defeated Monaco in the 2016/17 UEFAChampions League semi-finals (2-0 a, 2-1 h) to make it 12 aggregate wins out of 12 against Ligue 1 opponents.

• The first leg ended Juve's eight-match unbeaten run (W6 D2) against French sides, home and away, stretching backto a 2-0 loss at Bordeaux in the 2009/10 group stage.

• The Turin team have never lost at home to French visitors, winning 11 of their 14 matches.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League: Did you know?Overall records• In 2016/17 Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League trophy, with ACMilan (1989, 1990) the previous club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996),Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League finalas holders only to lose.

• Real Madrid then made it three wins in a row in 2017/18, becoming the fourth club to win three or more successivetitles in European Cup history, and the first to do it twice.

• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final inMunich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 monthslater Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.

Knockout stage• Real Madrid have qualified for the UEFA Champions League knockout phase a record 24 times, including 23 insuccession. They have also played a competition-high 97 knockout phase matches – ahead of Bayern München (92)and Barcelona (91).

• Teams have overturned a first-leg deficit to go through 49 times, including six in 2018/19 – a competition record for asingle season – and Paris Saint-Germain in this season's round of 16..

• Before last season, only twice – Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos in the 1995/96 semi-finals and Internazionale'svictory against Bayern in the 2010/11 round of 16 – had a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. However, Ajaxagain (against Real Madrid) and Manchester United (against Paris Saint-Germain) both achieved the feat in the2018/19 round of 16 before Tottenham (against Ajax) did likewise in the semi-finals.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overhauled was achieved by Barcelona against Paris in the 2016/17 last 16,when they lost 4-0 away but progressed thanks to a 6-1 home success. That eclipsed the previous record held byDeportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals, when they went down 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home; Romaequalled that margin in the 2017/18 quarter-finals, turning round a 4-1 first-leg loss at Barcelona with a 3-0 homesuccess, while in the 2018/19 semi-finals Liverpool lost 3-0 in the first leg at Barcelona but went through after a 4-0home victory.

• Thirty-three ties have been decided on away goals, including 13 where the triumphant team lost the first leg. Bayernand Monaco have benefited from the away goals rule five times – more than any other club – whereas Internazionalehave been eliminated by that method a record four times.

• In all, 30 ties have required extra time. Fourteen have been settled by extra time alone: six round of 16 encountersincluding Atlético-Liverpool in 2019/20, five quarter-finals, the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea and Liverpool, andthe 2013/14 final between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.

• Sixteen ties have gone to penalties, including seven finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016. The firsttwo-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory over Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2aggregate draw, still the only quarter-final to go to penalties. Bayern, Chelsea and Atlético Madrid have all appearedin three shoot-outs, sharing the competition record, with Bayern, Atlético and Liverpool having won the most (twoapiece).

• The 2015/16 round of 16 tie between Atlético Madrid and PSV was the first to finish goalless after two legs. Thirteenhave finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Real Madrid's defeat of Manchester City in the 2015/16 semi-finals.

• Liverpool (versus Porto) and Bayern (versus Beşiktaş) both won 5-0 in the 2017/18 round of 16, equalling theknockout phase record for the biggest first-leg lead – Real Madrid's 6-1 victory at Schalke in 2013/14 and Bayern's 5-0success at Sporting CP in 2008/09, both also in the round of 16.

• Bayern eventually beat Sporting by a record aggregate margin of 12-1 after a 7-1 stroll in the home second leg; thattie also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie until it wasequalled by Liverpool's 7-6 aggregate win against Roma in the 2017/18 semi-final.

• Bayern and Manchester City jointly hold the record for the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions Leagueknockout match. Bayern beat both Basel (2011/12) and Shakhtar Donetsk (2014/15) 7-0 in the round of 16 secondleg, while City beat Schalke by the same scoreline at the same stage of the 2018/19 competition.

• A record five clubs from England participated in the 2017/18 knockout phase. Including 2019/20, England has alsoprovided four clubs on eight other occasions – as has Spain five times and Germany twice. England is the only nation
