damageandwhenIdiscovered Udyr,Ifoundtheperfectchampionforme.Withthenewdevelopmentsinthispreseason,I'mreallylookingforwardtothestrengthofUdyrthisseason.

StrengthsandWeaknessesofUdyr

Overall, Udyrisoneofthestrongestmidlategamechampionsthereis.Hisspeed,damageandtankinesscombinedmakehimadeadlythreattoalmostanyteamcomp.Let'sstartbylookingathisstrengths.

Greatclear,veryhardtobecounterjungled.MaxingPhoenixStancecontributestoUdyr'sincrediblejungleclear.

Incredibleatsplitpushing.Udyr'ssplitpushingpowersareunparalleled.Oncehe'ssatedwiththisbuild,hecaneasily1v1andsometimes1v2ormoredependentonhowaheadheis,sotheenemyteamhastoeithersendatleast2peopleforyouorjustoneandthenyoukillthemandtaketheirbase.Seemoreaboutsplitpushinginthesectionbelow.

Veryhighmobility.OnceyourBearStanceismaxedandyougetthefullspeedboostfromit,youareprettymuchuncatchablesinceyoucanspambetweenBearandTurtle,whichgivesyoumassivemovespeedandashieldeveryfewseconds,plusthefullystackedpassive Monkey'sAgility.

Cansolodragearly.Yourearlygamekitisperfectforsoloingdrag,somakesuretoobtainthoseobjectives

early,readmoreaboutwhenandhowyoushouldsoloitinobjectivessection.

StrongCCwithstun.Yourstunisveryuniqueinthatyoucanstuneveryenemyontheirteaminunderafewseconds.UsingBearStanceonanenemyputsa5seconddebuffonthemwheretheycan'tbestunnedagain.Inteamfightsthiscanbeveryusefulasyoucanhelppeelbystunningtheirfrontline,andthendivethebacklineandstuntheircarriesbeforeyouroastthemwithyourphoenix.

Oneofthehighestdamagechampslategame.Asyou'llfindoutveryquickly,thisbuildgivesyouoneofthehighestdamageoutputsinthegameonceyou'resatedwithrageblade.Afterthatyoucangotanky,butonceyouhityourpowerspikearound1520minutesdon'tbackdownfromfights,don'tbeafraid.Prettymuchnoonecan1v1youtherestofthegameunlessthey'reinsanelyfed.

However,Udyrhashisdownsidesaswell,specificallyonemajorone:crowdcontrol.

Canbekitedbychampswithhighmobility/cc.Unfortunately,eventhoughUdyrhasmanystrengths,thisonethingcanbeamassiveproblemandisthemainreasonheisnotplayedmuchinLCS.Hereliesonfacetofacecombat,pummelingenemiesdownwithhisfists,butbecauseofthat,hecanbelockeddown/kitedfairlyeasily.Stuns,slows,fears,binds,silences,etcprettymuchallremoveUdyrfromafight.Thisiswhatwehaveitemsforthough.Thereasonyoualmostalwayspurchase Mercury'sTreadsisbecauseitreducesthedurationofallcrowdcontrolby20%,whichisincrediblystrongforyou.Forteamswithalotofcrowdcontrol( Morgana, Leona,etc)orchampionsthathavedisableultssuchas WarwickorMalzahar,buya QuicksilverSashearly.Thatisonepurchasethatyouwillneverregretasitmakesyoumuchmoredangerousinteamfightsor1v1s.

Verymanadependent.Allofyourskillscostmana,andtoplayUdyrtohismaximumpotential,everyfightrequiresyoutorotatequicklythroughyourabilities.ThiscanrunUdyroomveryquickly,soyouneedtokeepaneyeonyourmanabarbeforeenteringafightandknowabouthowmanystancesyoushiftthroughbeforeyoujustbecomeanautoattackingbear.Also,alwaystakethefirst2bluebuffsunlessmidlanedesperatelyneedsthesecondoneasitwillhelpyourjungleclearandabilitytoganklanesimmensely.

Notastrongtowerdefender.Aspowerfulasyouare1v1,inorderforyoutowaveclearyouhavetobeinmeleerangeofthecreepsforafewhits,thisleavesyouveryvulnerableincomparisontootherchampionsthatcanwaveclearfromfurtherback.Thismeansdefendingatoweragainstastrongeropponent(s)alonewillbeverydifficultforyou.

Masteries

Ifyou'regoingdevoureryouwanttotaketheFerocitytreeasitwillgiveyouincredibleamountsofburstdamagemidlategame.Fortunatelywiththenewmasterysystemyoudon'thavetosacrificetoomuchtankinesssinceyou

canstillput12pointsinresolve.

Furyistheonlyviableoptionwiththisbuild.The4%attackspeedisallaroundfarbetterthanmagicdamagewhenyou'regoingsateddevourer.

Tier1.5 DoubleEdgedSwordvs Feast

Yourchoiceisbetweenmoresustainormoredamage,andhonestlythisisn'tadebateeither:DoubleEdgedSwordalltheway.AsUdyryoursustainisalreadycrazyhigh.Add Hunter'sPotiontothemixandthere'snoreasonyou'dneedFeast.Plusthe3%increaseddamageisinsanelystrong.

Tier2 Vampirismvs NaturalTalent

Vampirismisdefinitelytherightchoicehere.EspeciallywiththeRunicArmortalentyoutakeintheResolvetree,thelifestealyougainfromVampirismismuchstrongerthanabitofAP/AD.

Tier2.5 BountyHuntervs Oppressor

ForUdyr'skit,thebestmasteryhereisBountyHunter.Onceyoukill2differentchampions,thismasterywillgiveyoumoredamagethanOppressor.Sinceyouonlyhaveonestunforashortperiodoftime,youcan'tmakegreatusethe2.5%increaseddamagetoenemieswithimpairedmovement.Thisissimplysacrificingavery

smallamountofearlygamedamageforatonofdamagelategame(5%increaseddamageonceyou'vekilledeachenemychampion).

Tier3 BatteringBlowsvs PiercingThoughts

Sincewe'regoingphoenix,youwanttogetPiercingThoughts.Themagicpenetrationwillhelpyoushredtanks.

Keystone FervorofBattle

Yayyyy6.1,theyfinallybuffedFervorofBattlemakingitbyfarthebestkeystoneforUdyr!Sinceyou'regoingsatedrageblade,yourattackspeedisalreadyhilarious,soyoubuildyourfervorstacksfrom0tomaxinamatterofseconds,whichgivesyouunparalleledburstdamagethatfarexceedsanyoftheotherkeystonechoices.

Sinceyou'llbemaxingyour TurtleStancesecond,thebestmasteryinthistierisRunicArmor.Itmakesyourturtlefarmorepowerful,asitincreasesyourlifestealandshieldby8%.

Tier2.5 Insightvs Perseverance

ThelastmasteryinthistreeyouwantisInsight,andthisoneisn'tupfordebate.The15%reducedcooldownofyourflashandsmiteisfartoovaluabletogiveupfor75health.

FlashvsGhost

Thereisalotofdebatewith Udyrastowhichsummonerspellsyoushouldtake.Inactuality,thereareveryfewscenariosinwhichghostismorebeneficialthanflashonUdyr.Firstoff,youhavenoabilitytogooverawallsoanytimeyouneedafastescapetopreventdeath,orajumpoverbaron/dragpittostealobjectives,you'llbescrewedwithoutflash.Second,inteamfightsthereisnobetterwaytodisruptacombo/takeouttheenemycarriesthanflash.Let'ssayforexamplethatateamfightstartsandtheenemyteamhasanMFwhostartstochannelherult.Insteadofghostingandpossiblybeingcc'dalongthewaytoherandbeingdeadbythetimeyoureachher,youjustinstantlyflashontoher,stunher,andsaveyourwholeteamfromtheultwhile2shottingherwhileshe'sstunned.Orforanotherexample,let'ssaytheirteamhasakillerwombocombo(malph/ori/yasuo)forexample.Iftheyengageonyou,youwon'tbeabletoghostoutintimebutyoucanflashtheirengageandblowuptheircarriesinstead.

Hunter'sPotionisundeniablythebest250goldyouwillspendinagame.Youalreadystartwith RefillablePotionsoupgradingitbarelycostsyouanythingandthesustainitgivesyouisunparalleled.Keepinmind,thisitemisboughtAFTERyourdevourer,alwayspurchasedevourerbeforebuyinganythingelse.ManypeoplewillarguethatbecauseUdyralreadyhassuchgreatjunglesustain,it'sanunnecessarybuy.However,therearemanyreasonswhythatiscompletelyfalse,themainreasonbeingHunter'sPotionallowsyoutoprettymuchneverbackifyoudon'twantto.Youstartwith5stacks,andeverytimeyoukillajunglecreature,itrefills1stack(ifyou'reatmaxstacksitwilluseachargeonyouandthenrefillthatcharge).Andthebestpartis,itrefillsyourmana.Soyoucanclearyourwholejungleextremelyfastandcomeoutwithfullmanaandhealthwith5stacksstillonyourpotion.Ithasatonofotherusesaswell:soloingrift/dragonis10timeseasiersinceyoucanjustuseall5stackswhenyoustarttheobjectiveandendupatfullhealthandmanaafterwards.Oryoucouldgankalane,losesomehealthfromthefight,butuseupyour5stacksandthengostraightbacktofarmingwithouthavingtoback.Andthebestpartiswiththisitem,youcanstartyourjunglefarmingat20%health/manaandcomeoutontheothersidewith100%healthandmanabecauseitbuildsstacksasyougo.Withoutthisitem,ifyouwanttogainhealthinyourjungleusingturtlestance,it'llcomeatthecostofallyourmana.Switchingbetweenphoenixandturtleisacostlywaytoclearyourjunglewithoutbluebuff,andwhatHunter'sPotionallowsyoutodoisusephoenixtoclearyourjunglesoyoucancomeoutwithfullhealthANDmana,allowingyoutocontinueontootherobjectives/gankswithoutbacking.Allinallthisisthebest250goldyouwillspend,asitallowsyoutostayin

Skirmisher'sSabreisagreatitemforduelingbutisnotthebestforUdyr.TheproblemwiththisitemonUdyristhatitdoesn'tgiveyouthegapclosethat Stalker'sBladedoes.ThisitemismeantforChampionswhohaveenoughCCtolockpeopledownsotheydon'thavetochaseyou( Rammus, Warwick,etc),orchampionsthatcansticktoanenemynomatterhowmuchescapethehave( MasterYi, Shyvana,etc).

DefensiveItems

IcebornGauntletisyourgotofirstarmoritemforafewreasons.Whatyou'relookingforinyourfirstitemafterdevourer/ragebladeiscooldownreduction,mana,andtypicallyarmorunlesstheenemyteamdoesn'thaveanythreateningADchamps.Thisiswhyalotofpeopleadvisegettinga FrozenHeartasyourfirstitem.However,mostofthetimeyoursupport,orevensometimestoplaner,willendupgettingoneandyouwon'tneedtobuythisitem.IcebornGauntletprovidesthesamemana/cdrandplentyofarmorbutgivesyouoneofthestrongestpassivesinthegameforUdyr.It'sthesheenpassive(bonusdamageonhitafterusingaspell)butitalsocreatesanicyzonethatslowsenemies,thaticyzoneiswhatmakesthisitemsopowerfulonUdyr.Younowslowenemiesanytimeyouattackthem(sinceyou'reconstantlychangingstances),whichmakesit10timesharderforenemiestoescapeyourclaws.Becauseyourelysoheavilyonclosecombat,thisitemhelpspreventyourbiggestdownfall:beingkited.Andthatiswhythisisanessentialiteminthisbuild.

SpiritVisageisyourmainmagicresistitem.Itgivesyoualittlemorecdr,tonsofmagicresistandhealth,PLUSapassivethatincreasesallhealingby20%.Becausewealsotook RunicArmoryourturtlestanceisnowincrediblydeadly.Notonlydoesitgiveyouamassiveshieldwhenmaxed,butyoualsogainatonoflifesteal.Thisitemisespecaillystrongwhenyouhaveanyoneonyourteamthatgivesheals( Soraka, Sona, Fiora,etc).Overall,spiritvisageworksgreatwithyourkitandshouldbeyourgotomagicresistitem.
