St Katharines Church in Uitenhage is cele-brating its 146th year and this grand old

lady is still in good shape.The foundation stone which cannot be

found today, was laid in 1867 and it is fromthis date that the anniversaries are countedalthough the building started only in 1869.The churchwas built in the simpleGothic ar-chitectural style by stonemasons of theMos-lem faithwith stones quarried in the vicinityof the farm “Hillwacht” and transported byox wagon until the building’s completion in1875. The original galvanized iron roof wasreplaced in 1966 by a slate roof that under-went major repairs in 2012.

The first harmonium was sold in 1881 andreplaced by an organ harmonium until thepresent organ, made by Norman & Beard,England with water power and alternativemanual operation, was installed in 1911. In1921 a Discus Electric Blower was purchased(to the relief of the choir boys who had to

pump it vigorously during services) and isstill in service today. Several costly renova-tions have been done over the years includ-ing the augmentation of the range, by install-ing “voices” and the organ is currently inneed of further repairs although still usedevery Sunday at services.

To help fund these and other major coststhe parishioners will be joining in with thecarnival spirit on the afternoon and eveningof 29th November with VID and LAN gamesas well as supper stalls (curry & rice andchicken braai) and all day on 30th Novemberwith many food, arts, crafts and fun stalls, awater slide, a jumping castle as well as a dogshow, a model aircraft display and muchmore in the churchgrounds inMarket Street.

The public is asked to support this ventureandbepart ofmaintaining theheritageof oneof the oldest andmost beautiful church build-ings in Uitenhage.

It’s time for off-road action. With the seasoncoming to its end some serious action packedracing is to be expected. The East Cape Off-Road club (ECOC) will be holding round eightof the Data Scout Championship this comingSaturday, 23 November.

The racing starts at 11:00 on the Uitsig farm,(Latitude: 33°57’38.81”S; Longitude:24°55’18.09”E). There will be indicators in theform of orange stickers and route signs forspectators to follow. Come and enjoy an excit-ing day with us.
