UCSB Recreation Center Receives LEED EB Gold Certification

In April 2008, the UCSB Recreation Center was recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council with a LEED Silver Existing Building (EB) Certification. In December 2013 the Rec Cen achieved the LEED-EBOM Gold Certification. The Rec Cen was the first and still the only university recreation center in the United States to receive such distinctions.

The Rec Cen has decreased its mea-sured environmental footprint by install-ing a 155kW photovoltaic array, water and natural gas conservation, recycling, air quality improvements and trash reduc-tion. The pv array generates 90% of the power to run the building.

The Rec Cen has also been designated as a Southern California Edison (SCE) Demonstration Showcase Facility for energy efficiency and sustainability. Ev-ery light in the facility is currently being changed to LED, further reducing electri-cal consumption by nearly 75%. You can do your part too, next time you come in for a workout bring your own bottle and fill up from one of the 2 new hydration stations, take a spin on one of the VisCycles which send energy back to the grid and limit your showers to save water.

RockclimbingImagine yourself moving fluidly over a

vertical rock surface. Your concentration is at its peak, mind and body moving over stone as one. The freedom and personal satisfaction one feels when rockclimbing is very difficult to put into words. Some describe climbing as ballet on rock.

We offer a comprehensive and progressive climbing program. Our series of classes will keep you challenged as your skills improve. The number one prerequisite for enrolling in our classes is your desire to learn.

Forget about those self-imposed limi-tations regarding strength, gender and age. Here is your chance to do YOUR dance on the rock.

Be sure to pick up a rockclimbing infor-mation sheet in the Rec Cen cashier's office when you register.

ADVENTURE CLIMBING CENTER Hours: 11:30am-1/2 hour before Rec Cen ClosingLocation: Rec Cen II Fee: Rec Cen Membership or Day Pass.

The UCSB indoor climbing center is open to the public. If you haven’t seen it then you are missing out on not only a beautiful work of art but a fantastic and very challenging training facility.

Entre Prises USA Inc designed “the largest imprint wall on the west coast!” The wall offers a dedicated bouldering section, 30 foot main wall, top rope climbing, autobelays, lead bolts, belay ledge and 3 crack features. We use a wide variety of artificial holds on the wall to keep you challenged regardless of your skill level.

The club atmosphere allows climbers to train, share techniques, exercise, meet new friends and plan weekend outings to the rocks. This is also a great place to discover or rediscover climbing. If you have taken a sabbatical from the sport then here is a place to get back into the mainstream. If you would like to take an instructional clinic, choose from a variety of levels offered regularly.

The facility is open everyday which allows for training after you get off work or out of class. We also rent harnesses and rock shoes.

ROCK I Beg. Rock ClimbingThis is our introductory rockclimbing

class and focuses on the fundamentals of climbing. You will be instructed in knot tying, basic movement techniques, belaying, rappelling and introduced to basic climbing equipment.

We start the class at our indoor climbing facility where you will be practicing move-ment techniques on a bouldering wall. Please wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes for this evening session. The full day lab takes place at one of the local climbing areas in the mountains behind Santa Barbara.

The fee includes instruction, climbing equipment and climbing shoes. Transporta-tion is by carpool. Maximum enrollment of eight so register early.

ROCKCLIMBING II, Intermediate Rock ClimbingPrerequisite: Rock I or equivalent.

This two day intensive class is designed to give you the time needed to practice the basic foundations of rockclimbing after you have completed an introductory climbing class. It is also a great refresher class for those who have temporarily retired from climbing. Instruction will include theory of top rope systems, belay systems, anchor con-struction and climbing techniques. Students often repeat this class so they can master the many skills involved.

The evening session meets at the climb-ing wall so come ready climb. The full day classes will be held on the rocks in the Santa Barbara area.

The fee includes instruction, climbing equipment and climbing shoes. Transporta-tion is by carpool. Max enrollment of six.

CANYON I, Intro to CanyoneeringThis course is an introduction to the art of

descending a canyon. A typical canyoneer-ing outing involves hiking into a canyon and entering the water course. When you reach a drop that is either too difficult or dangerous to hike, you connect to and lower down on a rope. Seasoned rock climbers and novices alike will enjoy the innovative skill sets used in canyoneering, such as rappelling on a re-trievable single line. Canyon 1 has a 2 hour evening session where you will learn proper preparation for a land/water sport and basic skills involved in rappelling. The weekend day will be in a local canyon where you can practice these skills in a natural setting and prepare for bigger canyons in the future.

CLIMBING MOVEMENT SERIESThe goal of this 2-part clinic is to break

down the fundamentals of climbing tech-nique, so that you can climb to your full po-tential! Contrary to popular belief, successful climbing does not require superior upper body strength. In the first class, the basics of climbing movement will be introduced by

besque, Double Maypole, and Half-Buddha. Additionally, the aerial silks course is very attractive for those who want to explore new ways of getting into better shape and staying fit. This full body workout will not only build forearm, bicep, back, abdomi-nal, and leg strength, but also will increase endurance, cardio strength, core strength and flexibility.

AERIAL SILKS II Prerequisite: Minimum requirements include being able to invert from the air. Instructor approval is recommended before enrolling.

The course is designed to build upon the introductory skills learned in the Aerial I classes. Students will be taught a variety of climbing techniques and descent positions, the aerial dance wrap tie-in, inversions in the air, variations on known moves, and beginning drops. This course will dedicate a portion of each class to the flexibility and strength conditioning aspects that will be required to learn more complex moves and wraps. It will also focus on movement con-trol on the fabrics and transitions between static positions. Like the Aerial I courses, Aerial II is very attractive for those who want to explore new ways of getting into better shape and staying fit.

AERIAL SILKS, Intensive IntroPerhaps you were thinking of taking the

Aerial Silks 8-week course? This 2 hour intensive clinic is designed to give you a strong introduction to this incredible sport. It is also a good way to get a feel for the sport without the full time commitment. Although there is no prerequisite, those with more up-per body strength and overall flexibility will have an advantage.

Kayak AdventureCenter

Ocean kayaking is an ideal sport for the Santa Barbara area. The beautiful natural vistas, the kelp beds rich in marine life, and the south facing beaches offer opportunities from idyllic protected coastal excursions to kayak surfing at point breaks and paddlers can find secluded beaches close to many accessible launching sites. While touring the local coast, paddlers usually see a variety of sea life. Curious seals and sea lions pop their heads up to spy on the slender boats as they glide quietly through the water. Dolphin and whales have occasionally been spotted dur-ing our outings.

SAN GABRIELS CANYONEERING Prerequisite: hiking experience, good physical condition

Imagine gallons of water being poured over your head. Now imagine that happening 65 feet off the ground. Canyoneering is an experience unlike anything else. It combines hiking, rock hopping, rappelling and often times swimming. A typical canyon outing involves hiking into a canyon and entering the watercourse. When you reach a drop that is either too difficult or dangerous to hike or climb, you connect to a rope and lower down.

The San Gabriel Mountains offer the best canyoneering in Southern California and the most fun canyons for beginners. This is an overnight trip, leaving on Saturday morn-ing and returning Sunday evening. Dinner and breakfast will be provided, as well as all technical canyoneering equipment. You will run a canyon each day. Canyons are formed by water, so plan to get wet!

COLORADO RIVER CANOEAwesome is the only word that can truly

describe the feeling one gets when canoeing through Black Canyon below Hoover Dam. Canoeing on the clear, cold water released from the dam, and being surrounded by high cliff walls is a great way to spend a week-end.

We start our paddling at Willow Beach and paddle up canyon to our camping area. Hot springs near our campsite are a welcome treat at the end of a day of paddling. All

three days are scheduled for paddling and exploring on the river.

Canoe instruction will be provided by trip leaders. We camp along the river for two nights, so we must carry our gear in canoes.

All skill levels are welcome to join this trip. Fee includes round trip transportation, basic canoe instruction, use of canoes and canoeing gear, breakfasts and dinners while camping, and group cooking gear. You must supply your own lunches, road meals and personal equipment.

YOSEMITE BACKPACKINGYosemite Valley is only one feature of

this magnificent National Park. For those of you who’d like to throw on a backpack and leave civilization behind, this is your chance. Come see some beautiful backcountry, in-credible rock formations, vigorous waterfalls and spirited wildlife. Your final destination will be Little Yosemite Valley.

We’ll spend our first night camping in the main valley and begin your incredible jour-ney in the morning. We’ll wind our way up the John Muir Trail towards Little Yosemite Valley, passing magnificent Vernal and Ne-vada Falls along the way. Spring in the back-country is lovely but it can be cold, wet and snowy if storms come in. Therefore, you will need good boots, warm clothes (not cottons), a warm sleeping bag (25° or below), and a tent. Having an enjoyable time is closely related to how well you are equipped.

IDYLLWILD CLIMBING TRIPIdyllwild is one of those quiet mountain

towns with delicious mom n’ pop food stops, cabin-side firewood piles and one general store, where each local knows the other and everything closes by 5pm. Not only is this pine forested paradise a beautiful place for

camping, hiking and viewing wildlife, it just so happens to be one of Southern Califor-nia’s top destinations for rock climbing. Ask anyone in the climbing community and they’ll agree, Idyllwild boasts world-class granite formations. Tahquitz Rock, a mono-lith visible from miles down the highway, towers over 2,000 feet above the mile-high town. Suicide Rock, it’s shy but solid counterpart, gapes with smooth granite faces across the valley floor. Viewing vertical multi-pitch terrain and feeling the techni-cal strain of these giant rocks will provide worthy exposure to the life of a traditional rock climber. This trip is designed to give aspiring climbers experience in a classic trad climbing setting. Good health and physical condition is recommended.

BACKPACKING IN THE SEQUOIASCome explore this beautiful park with us,

hike to vistas of the Great Western Divide. Backpacking enthusiasts with a sense of ad-venture welcome! We will drive from UCSB to Sequoia National Park stopping along the way for lunch, admire the scenery of the park, and camp at Lodgepole. Day Two, we pack up our backpacks and hit the Twin Lakes trail. We will lunch at Cahoon Mead-ows and set up base camp at Clover Creek. Day Three, it is up to beautiful Twin Lakes over the Cahoon Gap. Day four, breakfast in the woods, break down camp, pack out to Lodgepole, and take a final drive through the forest before heading back to Santa Barbara. This trip is a backpacking trip. All hikes will be rewarding and moderately strenuous; any reasonably fit person will find them enjoy-able. Fees include transportation, permits, camping, group gear, and all breakfasts and dinners while camping. You need to supply your own lunches, snacks, and personal gear.
