Summer 2011 Volume 21 • Number 1 E ach year America celebrates its independence on the 4th of July. At United Cerebral Palsy we’re celebrating independence each and every day for people with developmental disabilities. The article in The Record titled, “The Spirit of Independence,” described how Kate Daugherty has become self-employed with her business KLD Errand Service. Kate has been diagnosed with a disabili- ty, but she doesn’t let that stop her from living a life of independence. She cur- rently works for UCP utilizing our Supported Employment Program in an Adult Day Program helping others with disabilities. On the side, she has her very own business helping people by running errands for them. She recently earned her full independence when she moved out of her parent’s home. The article quoted Kate as saying that hav- ing a job at UCP is what has set her free, “I really can have my independ- ence.” See the full Record article on our website – www.ucpsj.org Jose Garcia was the guest speaker at UCP’s Annual Crab Feed. UCP serves Jose in our Supported Living Program and our Program Without Walls. Jose expressed what happened to him the previous year and how UCP fought to get him back on track: “My medications were off. I was having great difficulty doing anything. My behaviors were alienating me from many of my friends and family. They didn’t have to, but UCP worked with my doctor and my service coordinator at VMRC to get me back on track. I don’t know what I would have done without them.” Jose lives in an apartment by himself with the help of a UCP direct care pro- fessional. He is currently working toward his AA degree at Delta College and hopes to pass his final exams this summer to attain his goal. He likes to go to church, socialize at schoo,l and go have a hamburger with his best friends, Steven and Jeorge. Jose is happy to say that most of those broken relationships have now been mended. Jose is another example of how UCP works with peo- ple to help them live lives with greater independence. Independence changes people’s lives by instilling a sense of pride and confi- dence. UCP’s programs are designed to help people live to their greatest inde- pendence. The philosophy is that we will do with, not for, the people we serve in order to promote that inde- pendence. Nearly 20 years ago, I walked into UnitedCerebral Palsy, a 12 year-old kid with only avague impression of what UCP is. It did not

take long for me to realize the amazing mission andimportant work the organization does with the community.Over the years, my role at UCP has changed from custodianto President of the Board. As I prepare to end my term asPresident, I reflect not on how my service may have helpedUCP, but how UCP has changed my life. Staff has become family, caring andreliable. Our customers have changed the perceptions of what people withdisabilities are capable of: Life without Limits. While staff, board members, andcustomers have changed over the years, one thing remains the same as it did when Ifirst walked through those doors: the mission. UCP’s mission to enhance the quali-ty of life for persons with disabilities is at the core of our service. It is the one con-stant that reminds us of how important our work is and how much we rely on thecommunity to continue supporting that mission. Our incoming President, DanPlatt, shares the same enthusiasm and devotion we all have for UCP. I wish himand our staff continued success. My final act as President is to re-commit to UCP’smission and focus my efforts on sharing my passion with those who have yet toexperience UCP’s magic.

United Cerebral Palsy’s earlyintervention program wasone of three programs in

the nation to be awarded a NewcombGrant from Raising A Reader. In 2006,UCP teamed with Raising A Reader toenhance their reading program withadaptations which make it easier forchildren with learning differences orspecial needs to engage in readingexperiences with their parents. Thispilot program was funded through agrant from First 5 San Joaquin. Aftershowing great success, Raising A Readermade grant dollars available for agenciesto adapt their book bag program tobetter suit the needs of young childrenwith special needs, insuring that thechild’s disability or learning style doesnot prevent them from experiencing thejoy of sharing a book. This funding willbe used to adapt more books, meetingthe specific needs of children served inUCP’s Early Intervention programs.UCP will present their adaptations atRaising A Readers NationalCoordinators Institute in October.

Raising A Reader is a nationalnonprofit organization helping localagencies provide research-based literacy

programs that encourage parents toengage their children in readingexperiences at an early age. ThroughRaising A Reader, service providersrotate a library of age- appropriatebooks into the home, helping parentscreate a language and literacy-richenvironment. Families are also encour-aged to make connections to their locallibrary to build lasting family literacyhabits. Raising A Reader has shownpositive outcomes in many areasincluding: child enjoyment of reading, improved language skills, emergentliteracy skills (comprehension, letternaming, rhyming, etc.), more books inthe home, increased frequency ofparent-child reading, and increased useof the library

Raising A Reader is also teamingwith UCP to develop a training moduleto be used with all Raising A Readeraffiliates. The focus of this module is topresent best practices in adapting andimplementing Raising A Reader for chil-dren with different abilities and needs.UCP will work with the otherNewcomb Award recipients to incorpo-rate their adaptations into this trainingmodule.
