Important information you need to know!

Driving in New ZealandIf you hold a valid overseas driver’s licence or an international driving permit, you can drive in New Zealand for a maximum of 3 months after you first arrive. You should then apply for a New Zealand driver’s licence. You will need two kinds of identification (ID) to prove who you are and what your current address is. You must also be able to prove you hold a valid overseas licence. You will only be able to drive those types of vehicles for which you were licensed in your country of origin and you must also carry that licence or permit with you at all times when driving. If you do not apply for a New Zealand driver’s licence within three months of arriving in New Zealand, you will become an unlicensed driver and could be charged if you are caught driving by the police. You need a licence to obtain vehicle insurance.

CodeUCOL has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Minister of Education. Copies of the Code are available on request from this institution or from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at: www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/international.

Full details on entitlements to publicly-funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website at: www.moh.govt.nz.

ACCIDENT INSURANCE

The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at: www.acc.co.nz.

mEDICAL AND TRAVEL INSURANCE

International students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand. This is because most students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand unless they are:

– A resident or citizen of Australia, or

– A national of the United Kingdom in New Zealand, or

– The holder of a temporary permit that is valid for two years or more.

If you do not belong to one of these special categories and you receive medical treatment during your visit, you must pay for the full costs of that treatment. There is a $15 charge for a clinic visit on our campus. If you need assistance after hours, you can visit a local emergency clinic or hospital. Medical insurance must cover the cost of staying in hospital, visits to the doctor, urgent medical treatments and emergency dental treatment. It is compulsory for all international students to have appropriate medical and travel insurance cover before they leave their home country. UCOL will purchase medical and travel insurance on your behalf unless you can show proof that you have arranged your own insurance cover. The cost of insurance cover arranged by UCOL is shown on your offer of place.

TransportA free bus service exists for UCOL students for local rides within Palmerston North and Wanganui. Students must show current UCOL Student Identification to be granted a free ride. If students decide to ride a bicycle please remember a cycle helmet, as it is compulsory to wear a cycle helmet in New Zealand.

There is an excellent national public transport system in place which includes buses, ferries and trains. If you are planning a tour throughout New Zealand, you can obtain special student travel passes. Discount fares are also available for plane travel if you book early.

Helpful Tips

– Bring your International Student Card (ISIC) with you, it is cheaper than obtaining one in New Zealand — you can purchase discounted plane fares with an ISIC card.

– If you have a Driver’s Licence, bring it with you — this makes it easier to obtain a New Zealand Licence.

– Bring half a dozen passport size photos with you — they are expensive in New Zealand.

– Don’t bring electrical goods (hair dryer, CD player etc.); even with the proper adapter, they may blow out. There are various electrical appliance stores in Wanganui, Masterton and Palmerston North where you can buy small electrical goods at reasonable rates.

– Bring your own sports gear, e.g. squash racquet, badminton racquet, etc. These will probably cost more in New Zealand. The exception is good quality hockey sticks, which are cheap in New Zealand.

– Make a written request in advance for a book list. Books may be cheaper in your own country.

– Make sure you have information about your own country. People will ask you a lot of questions.

– Cigarettes are expensive in New Zealand, it is also illegal to smoke in public areas like restaurants and bars, also all home stays will not allow smoking in their homes. Give up before you arrive!

– Remember, 20kg is all the luggage you can bring to New Zealand without paying an excess baggage fee.

– Bring your national costume if you consider this appropriate.

Things you should know before you leave home:

– Basic cooking (how to cook rice, prepare dinner etc.)

– Basic first aid (how to clean wounds, deal with vomiting etc.)

– How to take care of your own clothes and bedding.

Naween Premadasa NZ Diploma in Business

Naween Premadasa gave up a good career and travelled halfway across the world to further his education, but the UCOL graduate says it was all worth it.

“I enrolled at UCOL from Sri Lanka as an international student as I had heard that the class sizes were smaller and the lecturers more approachable because of that.”

The more intimate class size made a great difference when it came to subjects Naween was unfamiliar with.

“I think the UCOL lecturers played a huge role in my success. Accounting was something I had previously thought was too difficult for me to pick up, and now I am a straight A student. The lecturers are very real people with valuable experience.”

The next step for Naween is to choose the best career path for him and his family. He’s very interested in pursuing a career in accounting.

“I am studying my final paper to be an Accounting Technician which is recognized by NZ Institute of Chartered Accountants and then I can work as an Accounting Technician and also continue with my studies. It will be a step down for a short while but I’m a very competitive person by nature and I know I will get where I want to be in five years time.”

Since this interview Naween has graduated from UCOL and has been proudly presented with the “Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand Award for Excellence in Academic Performance by a Graduating Student in the New Zealand Diploma in Business Programme”

mark Gilbert Diploma in Furniture Design and Making

Mark Gilbert relocated from the UK to New Zealand in 2007 to undertake “the best furniture design and making course of its kind in the world". Today, he works as a technician at UCOL and hopes to one day become a lecturer so he too can ‘Pass On The Passion’.

“In my case it’s what made a man move his wife and three children to the other side of the world, leaving family and friends behind and giving up all that he has ever known,” Mark says.

As an international student, Mark’s fees were not subsidised, however he says that the programme is still a lot cheaper than similar courses in the UK.

Mark says that UCOL’s Diploma in Furniture Design and Making has it all. “There was something for all levels and abilities plus the lecturers encourage you to develop your own ideas and style. The passion has been passed on and I’m sure it will always be with me.”

“I was looking for a missing piece of my jigsaw but instead I got a whole new jigsaw with many pieces to put into place. I can see what the picture is now.”

Sandeep Singh Rana National Diploma in Science

Sandeep Singh Rana moved to New Zealand from India in July 2006 to study the National Diploma in Science at UCOL. After completing his studies in three semesters instead of the usual four, Sandeep was offered a job as a lab technician at Fonterra Research Centre in Palmerston North. He now tests milk and milk products for various purposes using different analytical techniques in the chromatography and composition sections of the department.

Sandeep says that the skills he learned at UCOL are directly applied to his new job. “As there is a large practical component it prepared me well for the work I do today,” he says. “It gives a good understanding of scientific concepts and technology.”

In a country like New Zealand where dairy farming is one of the largest economic sectors, Sandeep believes that there will always be work opportunities. “Vineries, the meat industry, research centres – they will always need technicians and UCOL offers practical courses that teach the things that are relevant to current industry.”

In the future Sandeep hopes to study management to further his career with Fonterra.

Gurpreet Singh Brar National Diploma in Engineering (Electrotechnology)

This year Gurpreet Singh Brar started his second year in the National Diploma in Engineering (Electrotechnology), Level 6, at UCOL Palmerston North.

Gurpreet says UCOL is a good place to study and make friends. “The tutors are very good, I have good classmates, and the environment is really friendly.”

He is really enjoying the programme, and when he graduates, his skills will line him up for a career in a strong industry with a wide range of career opportunities. “Electrotechnology is a good career. You can be in power engineering or electronics, or telecommunications. There are so many careers you can go into.”
