If you’re a new student, you might be feeling a bit overwhelmed right now. Don’t worry; that’s understandable, and we’ve got your back.

This Student Guidebook is designed to help you get settled into life at UCOL. It contains details about the different services available to you, along with information to help you get the most out of your time here.

As well as keeping this Student Guidebook handy, we recommend that you familiarise yourself with the Student Intranet and UCOL website. Both have a wealth of information to help you have an enjoyable and successful time at UCOL.

One of the first things you should do this year is attend your campus po-whiri. UCOL starts each semester with a powhiri, a traditional Ma-ori welcoming. It will involve karanga (being called and led onto campus), kaiko-rero (welcome speeches), waiata (singing) and hongi (a traditional Ma-ori greeting), all of which are to welcome students into the UCOL wha-nau (family). UCOL staff look forward to greeting you there.

Keep an eye on ucol.ac.nz/events for details about the po-whiri and Orientation Week activities.

welcome to UCOL.

Student ID CardsKa-ri Tautohu Tauira

We recommend that you always have your student ID card on you. You’ll need it to check out resources from the library, access some specialist rooms, top up your printing/photocopying credit, and use the printers. You may also need your ID card to ‘swipe in’ if you intend on coming to UCOL after the main doors are closed. If you need a replacement card, please have a chat to our friendly staff at the Information Centres. Replacement cards may incur a charge.

Computers, WiFi, Printing & PhotocopyingTaputapu Hangarau Whakaaturanga

If you need access to a computer, UCOL has you more than covered. We have a number of computer labs and pods across the campuses ready for you to use. All you need is your login information.

You can also access the free WiFi network, ‘UCOL iConnect’, while you’re on campus. Just select ‘UCOL iConnect’ from the available networks on your device, enter your student login details, and you’re away.

Printers are usually located in the computer labs, Learning Hubs, Atriums, student studios and Libraries. There is a charge for all printing and photocopying. You can top up your printing/photocopying credit at the Information Centres in Palmerston North and Whanganui, and reception or the Learning Hub in Wairarapa.

ParkingTu-nga Waka

You can park in UCOL campus carparks all day, as long you display a UCOL parking sticker (available from the Information Centres) on your vehicle’s rear window.

Parking is free at the Whanganui and Wairarapa campuses.

At the Palmerston North campus, there are some free (blue) parks, along with $1 half-day parks and $2 whole-day parks. Make sure you put your parking receipt on the dashboard each day so it can be clearly seen. The carpark is monitored and tickets are issued.

We recommend you respect any no-parking zones, particularly beside nearby businesses, in case your vehicle gets towed.

Free BusesPahi utu kore

As a UCOL student, you can travel on Palmerston North and Whanganui urban buses for free. Just show the driver your student ID card and you’re good to go.

There are also certain buses that travel between our Palmerston North and Whanganui campuses that you can travel on free of charge. More details and timetables for those services are on the Student Intranet.

AS@UThe Association of Students at UCOL (AS@U) is your student union. AS@U provides advocacy and representation for students at UCOL and on a national level. AS@U also organises Orientation, fundraisers, and other fun events and initiatives that you can get involved with.

AS@U holds yearly elections for a Student President and Vice Presidents to represent the student body, so put your name forward if you want to make a difference for your fellow students.

You can also volunteer to be a Student Representative, which will give you the chance to develop your leadership skills and share your ideas to help improve the student experience. Contact the AS@U Student President if you’re interested.

0510 HAVE FUN

Your time at UCOL will probably fly by, so make the most of it. Keep an eye on the Events page of the UCOL website for cool things happening around the campus and the community.

KNOW WHAT IS EXPECTED OF YOU IN CLASS AND ON CAMPUS

Familiarise yourself with your programme’s handbook, which is available on the Student Intranet.

MANAGE YOUR TIME

Have a plan and stick to it, but be sure to give yourself breaks. Our Learning Advisors can help you with your time management.

GET TO KNOW THE CAMPUS

Take the time to explore the campus, and find spots that suit you for studying or just chilling out.

COMBAT PROCRASTINATION

Write down the tasks you need to complete. Breaking complex tasks down into smaller ones can make them feel more achievable. Reward yourself when you finish something really difficult.

ASK FOR HELP

Whether you’re feeling lost on campus or you’re having trouble with your studies, ask for help before it starts feeling like a big problem.

DON’T CRAM

Cramming for exams and doing assignments the day before they’re due it not a great way to learn and it can really stress you out. Pace your learning throughout the semester.

GET TO KNOW YOUR CLASSMATES

The classes here are smaller than what you’d see at a university, so it’s easier to get to know your classmates and make great friends.

ASK QUESTIONS AND CONTRIBUTE TO CLASS DISCUSSIONS

Speaking up in class can be scary for some people, but it’s a great way to keep your learning on track. If you don’t ask the question, you may never know the answer.

STAY HEALTHY

Eat well and get a good amount of sleep. Our Wellness team can point you in the right direction if you have any health concerns.
