In early 2015, the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) announced a £200 million investment in to its Preston campus. This development, known as the UCLan Campus Masterplan 2020, will see historic and transformational change over the course of the next ten years. It is the hope of the

University that these new and cutting-edge facilities will attract and retain new talent that will ultimately create a skilled workforce that can meet local, national and international needs. As well as this, the Masterplan will continue to foster an environment built upon UCLan’s key principles of

Determined that the Masterplan should benefit the University’s existing students as soon as possible, it was decided that the first instalment to completed would be new social spaces. UCLan selected multi-award winning architecture practice, AHR, to design the planned £8. 15 million development. Key design features include glass rooves and an indoor hidden garden, as well as moveable furniture so students can reconfigure the space to suit their needs. Completed in December 2017, the social areas provide staff and students with a comfortable and well-equipped space where they can work, relax and socialise.

Following the successful completion of the social spaces, in Spring 2018 the University opened the Oasis Faith and Spirituality Centre, a bespoke, purpose-built multi-

faith centre. This space was designed in consultation with staff, students and the Students’ Union to ensure the space was optimised for use by all.

“we have been inspired by the vision of the Students’ Union (SU) and the Faith Team for how a very ambitious facility will make a positive difference to all of our communities. We are very excited to be making this substantial investment to ensure all students and staff have the perfect environment for prayer, contemplation and reflection”

— Michael Ahern, UClan chief operating officer

Engineering and Innovation Centre (EIC)

“It will be fantastic for the City to be home to such a modern, innovative building which will be a real hive of activity ... Beyond being a world-class teaching and research facility, it’s going to be a real asset to the City and the people of Preston, as well as Lancashire and the North West as a whole”

— Simon Atkinson, EIC Project Manager

The next major milestone of the Masterplan will be the opening of the £32 million Engineering Innovation Centre (EIC) in early 2019. This state-of-the-art facility will provide students and staff with an environment optimised for learning, with integrated teaching and research spaces.

This will inspire teaching, research and knowledge exchange, establishing UCLan as a leader in engineering innovation. It is UCLan’s aspiration that this centre will produce an increase of hundreds of locally trained graduates per year in areas such as aerospace, mechanical and oil engineering.

The first two phases of enabling works for the UCLan’s £57 million Student Centre and Civic Square have been hailed a success. This part

of the development will seamlessly integrate the University and the City in new ways, as well as providing a home for the variety of services that the University provides. The Student Centre will also provide the community with meeting spaces and event venues, helping to further extend the University’s outreach. The date for completion of this final key piece of the Masterplan is September 2020.
