CYCLING CYCLING 2013-2014 Newsletter Jonathan Penaloza Photo by Sam Price A Successful Year Over the past school year, the University of Califor- nia, Davis Cycling team, managed to pull off yet another successful season. We had approximately 70 club members, including around 25 women who helped us continue our tradition of having not only the largest colligate cycling club in the west coast, but the largest women’s team as well. Our success not only came from our veteran riders, but from the many students who joined our team for the first time this year. Our team successfully hosted three separate races this year - a mountain bike race and two road races. In No- vember, racers from all over the Western Collegiate Cycling Conference (WCCC) traveled to the town of Auburn to com- pete in Short- Track, Downhill, and Cross-Country races on their mountain bikes. It was a great weekend that allowed many of our new club members to familiarize themselves with their teammates and with collegiate cycling in general. It even gave many of our road cyclists the opportunity to race mountain bikes for the first time. For the road season, our team hosted a collegiate criterium and an open cate- gory criterium at Land Park in Sacramento. The Cal Aggie Criterium in January, which has become known as the open- ing race for the Northern California road-racing season, saw over 500 participants spread across all categories. For our collegiate race, schools from all over the WCCC came to battle for the overall conference team title as well as rights to qualify for the Collegiate National Championships. Overall, our races were very successful, and we saw many Aggies on the podiums. Sarah Beard Photo by Sam Price

Road Season Highlights Thanks to the success of our dedicat-ed racing team, we were able to secure our spot as the top team in the WCCC for the fifth year in a row. Our team spent almost every weekend from February through April travel-ing from Humboldt County to Santa Barbara to Reno. All season long our team members gave it their all on and off the bike which led to numerous individual victories as well as our team title. Finally, at the end of April everyone in the WCCC went to Fresno to compete in the conference championships. Numerous Aggies brought home medals in all different categories and events.

The Aggies’ A squad once again qualified to com-pete at the USA Cycling Collegiate National Champion-ships in Richmond, Virginia. On the first day in the men’s and women’s Team Time Trials, our two teams raced against the clock through the technical downtown 20 mile circuit. Our phenomenal women finished 2nd in the nation, while our men’s team finished 9th, just 30 seconds outside of 3rd place! Day two kicked off with amazing Criterium performances from Judy Wexler, Sara Enders, and Diane Moug, who finished 2nd, 11th, and 13th respectively. In the evening, the men fought hard to match the women’s results and succeeded in putting Daniel Kosykh and Jon-athan Penaloza into the top 10 at the finish. Our team was looking very good going into day 3, which consisted of the same road race as the 2015 professional world championships. Once again, our women were able to be at the front of the race and Judy Wexler ended up with a 4th place finish, followed by Diane and Sara in the top 20. Unfortunately, our men did not have such great luck, and Daniel Kosykh was our only rider to finish in the front group with a top 30 performance out of over 180 riders. This amazing team display resulted in a trip to the podium for the overall Division I team title as we finished 4th place in the nation!
