Software Tests Avira Free Antivirus (virus scanner) Avira is located in the Start > Programs > menu after the computer has booted into WindowsXP via the UBCD4WIN CD-ROM. It is labeled as AntiVir.

1. Boot the computer into Windows XP from the UBCD4WIN CD-ROM. 2. Start > Programs > Anti-Virus Tools > AntiVir 3. An “Access is denied” message will appear as Ariva attempts to write files to the

CD-ROM (“File System Name: CDFS”). When prompted for a drive letter, press <enter> to select the default drive letter B:. NOTE: If an “Out of Virtual Memory” warning appeared when the computer booted, then select drive letter C:. This will allow Avira to copy the files it needs to the hard drive, since there is insufficient space in RAM. Files will be copied to “C:\Program Files\AntiVir”. Be advised the files will be removed when Avira exits.

4. When the Avira program opens, the screen will indicate, “3 services are not working correctly”. Additionally, “Real-Time Protection” and “Web Protection” are disabled. This is normal since the system was booted from a CD-ROM.

5. On the menu bar at the top of the screen, select Help > About Avira Anti-Virus. a. Click on the “Virus Information” tab. b. Note the date of the “Virus definition file:

Virus definition file 7.11.52.88 12/3/2012 c. Click on the “License Information” tab. d. Note the expiration date of the license.

License valid until: 6/30/2013 Click OK to close the Help window. NOTE: If the computer is connected to the internet and if you enabled network support during startup, then you can update the virus definitions by clicking on… Update > Start on the menu bar. Afterwards, repeat step 5 to determine if a new virus definition file was downloaded.

6. On the left-side of the Avira window, click on “System Scanner”, then select the device to be scanned (typically, “Local Hard Disks”). Click on the magnifying glass to begin scanning. NOTE: Most virus and malware will only infect the C:\ partition; therefore, if time is a factor, you may want to scan only the C:\ partition. Click on “System Scanner”, then select “Manual Selection” and afterwards, select the (C:) partition. Click on the magnifying glass to begin scanning.

7. Upon completion of scanning, if a virus was found, then “A virus or unwanted program was found!” message will appear. Review each detection and take appropriate action. Usually, you will simply click on “Apply now”. WARNING: If you remove an infected file, it will be quarantined to either… B:\AntiVir\AppData\INFECTED (if you selected drive letter B: in step 2 or C:\Program Files\ AntiVir\AppData\INFECTED (if you selected drive letter C: in step 2 To determine the quanrantine folder, on the left-side of the Avira window, click on “Quanratine” and then select the folder icon at the top of the page.

Be advised the B: drive is merely a RAM Disk; therefore after rebooting, the aforementioned folder and its contents will no longer exist. Likewise, the C:\Program Files\ AntiVir\AppData\INFECTED folder is merely a temp folder; therefore after rebooting, the folder and its contents will no longer exist. If you have any doubts about permanently deleting a reported infection, than as a precaution, copy the aforementioned INFECTED folder to the C:\ drive. Any virus within the folder has been renamed as a *.qua file and is no longer a threat.

copy B:\AntiVir\AppData\INFECTED to C:\AntiVir\AppData\INFECTED Also copy the Avira virus report (aka, the log file) to the C:\ drive.

copy B:\AntiVir\AppData\logfiles to C:\ AntiVir\AppData\logfiles Both the INFECTED folder and the logfiles can be deleted from the C:\ drive once you have verified the system is 100% operational. Conversely, if you discover one of the quarantined files is needed (e.g., Avira reported a false positive), then you can restore that file using the information in the report.

8. Review the scan results by clicking on “Report”. If you want to print the report,

then save the logfiles as indicted in step 7. After rebooting into normal mode from the system’s hard drive, then you can print the report.
