WOLLONGONG – INC
PATRON: Professor Paul Wellings CBE, Vice Chancellor UOW
Term 2, 2018 Newsletter:
MONDAY 30TH APRIL – FRIDAY 29TH JUNE
FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Colleagues It seems to me that everyone is enjoying the talks Australian History and Italy on Thursdays. Next term the talks will be ‘Rebels and Revolutionaries’ and Egypt. My thanks to Dennis Vukovic for taking over the leadership of the Current Affairs Group that meets at 12:00 on Mondays. Also our thanks to Bill Mowbray for running it for many years. Our membership is similar to this time last year. Each year there are some that do not renew their membership but happily they are replaced by new members. To aid new members fit in, could everyone please remember to wear their badges. With the completion of the construction works outside the Salvation Army Centre, I am hoping that this will encourage more people to attend. We are also letterboxing the new buildings as they are being occupied. Financially, last year we ran at a small profit, so I am not anticipating any need to increase the membership fees this year. The Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday 7th June at 11 am. Regards David Christian

TUESDAY – OPERA APPRECIATION
Fortnightly at 5 Bushlands Avenue, Mount Pleasant
Contact: Kevin Rigby (42284 2721) for any vacancies
TUESDAY LUNCH GROUP
Held on 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Builders Club Bistro. Although
only six of us were able to be at the February lunch we all enjoyed it. The
food is very good and very affordable at $8 for members and $10 for non-
members for the specials.
We are considering ways to attract more people to these lunches.
Perhaps we could choose a different venue each month. And it is not just
for women; we had one man join us last month and he survived. Any
suggestions?
See notice on sign-in table or contact: Christine White on 0409 669184

DAY TRIPS TERM 2
Unfortunately the information was not available in time for
printing of the newsletter. Trip sheets will be emailed to those
with email addresses and available on our web site and on the
first Monday of Term 2, 30th April.
HISTORICAL TOUR OF THE SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS
Our last trip for 2017 was to the lovely Southern Highlands via Mittagong, Berrima, and
Bowral. Our morning tea stop was very enjoyable, not just because of our favourite apple
slices, but I think we all appreciated the peace and tranquillity of Lake Alexandra Reserve.
Watching the dear little ducks on the water was a treat and so good for the soul.
Berrima Museum was interesting with lots of information given by the enthusiastic
volunteers. A lovely High Tea at the Centennial Vineyards went down well – a change from
the usual lunch time menu.
Our tour guide, Philip, gave us so much information as we drove around some back roads in
this beautiful part of our country. It was great to feel his enthusiasm and love of his home
territory – we could have gone on for days.
Our appreciation goes to Doreen, not just for this day, but for all the outings we’ve had this
year and the many hours she has spent organising every little detail to make everything run
smoothly for us. We are so lucky and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2018.
PS: Seen on an eatery in Mittagong on the way home – a sign which said “Our Mexican food
is so authentic that Donald Trump could build a wall around it”.

PHILOSOPHY AT THE FRAT – LYNDON STOREY
This event was a great success with attendance far exceeding expectations. Lyndon Storey
gave an interesting presentation which answered a lot of our questions about Humanism.
After the presentation we adjourned downstairs for coffee and a chat.
This was a first for the Philosophy Group but hopefully not the last. Our thanks to Stuart, Huw
and Gale for the work they do organizing the philosophy group.

RECONCILIATION DAY NOTE: Members of the Northern U3A Film Society will be invited to the
screening of BENEATH CLOUDS, May 31, in honour of the day.
May 3 *OCTOBER (TEN DAYS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD), USSR, 1927/28, 103 mins. Directed by
Sergei Eisenstein. Commissioned ten years after to celebrate the Russian Revolution, the film focusses
on the war in Leningrad; it takes place in the original locales, and, along with BATTLESHIP
POTEMKIN, the film pioneered the process of intellectual montage.
May 10 *TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT, USA, 1944, 103 mins. Directed by Howard Hawks. With
Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Walter Brennan. Loosely based on Hemingway’s novel, an
American charter boat captain and his mate become unwillingly involved in World War II Caribbean
politics; the upside is a romance with Lauren Bacall.
May 17 *REBECCA, 1940, USA, 130 mins. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. With Joan Fontaine, Laurence
Olivier, George Sanders. Based on Daphne du Maurier’s novel. A young woman’s romantic dreams
all seem to have come true when she marries a dashing man; things blacken as the ghost of the
husband’s first wife enters.
May 24 *BANGHU (LATE CHRYSANTHEMUMS) 1954, Japan, 97 mins. Directed by Mikio
Naruse. Combines three Fumiko Hayashi stories about ageing geishas, their family problems,
not to mention the post-war economy, and the friendship that sees them through.
May 31 BENEATH CLOUDS, 2010, Australia. 90 mins. Directed by Ivan Sen. With Dannielle Hall,
Damian Pitt. A search for identity and purpose in their everyday, meaningless lives brings
together two teenagers. On their journey they form a bond that transcends their individual
differences, yet leads each one to confront the reality of their choices.
June 7 STAGECOACH, 1939, USA, 96 mins. Directed by John Ford. With John Wayne, Claire Trevor,
John Carradine. A variety of townspeople find themselves sharing a stagecoach trip, each for their own
reasons. STAGECOACH is widely celebrated as the birth of the modern western film.
June 14 *GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933, USA, 98 mins. Directed by Busby Berkeley. With Dick Powell, Ruby
Keeler, Ginger Rogers. A backstage musical about the difficulties of putting on a show; features the
remarkable musical numbers of Berkeley: cinematic choreography of dazzling originality.
June 21 *LA STRADA, 1954, Italy, 104 mins. Directed by Federico Fellini. With Giulietta Masina (Fellini’s
wife), Anthony Quinn, and Richard Basehart, Young Gelsomina (Masina) is sold to a brutal circus
strongman. (Quinn), and drawn into his increasingly painful hostilities with a rival
strongman. Without abandoning his neo-realist background, Fellini develops a deeply emotional story.
June 28 FANTASIA, 1940, USA, 125 mins. Directed by Walt Disney. A celebration of the possibilities of
animation at the time, FANTASIA is far more than a simple cartoon as it reworks visual and story
ideas into new relationships with music.
