Women’s Lacrosse

Timing is everything. If not for a last-minute phone call

from then head women's lacrosse coach Jane Miller in

1986, Julie Myers may have lead Penn State to the 2004

national championship. Myers grew up wanting to go

to the University of Virginia because so many of her

neighbors and local

athletes from subur-

ban Philadelphia

were going to

Virginia. Just as the

dream didn't seem

possible, a last minute

scholarship opened

up and the Cavalier

coach called just

prior to the time that

the national letters

of intent were to be

signed. With offer

in hand, she decided on the spot to attend Virginia,

without ever making a visit. She shocked her parents

by telling them that she was going to Virginia and not

Penn State to play lacrosse and field hockey.

Myers is the first person in the history of the sport

to win a national championship as a player, an assistant

coach and as a head coach at the same institution. She

won the title as a starting center in 1991, earning

second-team All-America honors and was one of Miller’s

graduate assistant coaches on the 1993 championship

team. Now, in 2004, she brought the trophy home as

the head coach.

Myers credits being at the right place at the right

time as the basis for building her impressive resume.

After completing her playing career, she returned to

Virginia to pursue a master’s degree in teaching and was

a graduate assistant for the 1993 team. When assistant

coach Julie Dayton left the program to become the

head field hockey coach at Dartmouth after the ’93

season, Miller hired Myers to fill the vacancy. Then when

Miller retired from coaching after the 1995 season,

Myers was hired as the head coach and promptly led

the Cavaliers to the championship game, cementing her

future as Virginia’s head coach. After four runner-up

trophies in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2003, it was Myers’

time to win the title in 2004.
