Dear Graduates,

Congratulations on graduating from Southern Adventist University. Contrary to what you may be thinking, you have come to a beginning, not an ending. By concluding a segment of your education, you are starting another. I hope the knowledge and experience you have developed at Southern will be the foundation from which you build upon for a lifetime.

We have sought to fulfill the education goal written by Ellen White in her book Education: “It is the work of true education to ... train the youth to be thinkers, and not mere reflectors of other men’s thought.”

I pray that: Your presence in the world upholds God’s values, rather than reflecting the world’s. Your work in the world goes beyond what is expected, not just mirroring others. Your relationships reflect Jesus, rather than the fads of society. Your political thoughts create trends, not reflect fashion. Your spiritual life transforms those around you, rather than imitating what others do.

God bless you as you transform your world!

Yours in Christ,

Gordon BietzPresident

All Thy works with joy surround Thee, Earth and heav’n reflect Thy rays,Stars and angels sing around Thee, Center of unbroken praise;

Field and forest, vale and mountain, Bloss’ming meadow, flashing sea,Chanting bird and flowing fountain Call us to rejoice in Thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving, Ever blessing, ever blest,Well-spring of the joy of living, Ocean-depth of happy rest!

Thou the Father, Christ our Brother—All who live in love are Thine:Teach us how to love each other, Lift us to the joy divine.

Please silence all electronic devices. Seating on Sunday in the Chattanooga Convention Center is on a first-come basis. Ushers will assist in filling all unoccupied seats 15 minutes before the program begins. Your consideration of others is appreciated as you cheer and take pictures of your graduate. Please do not stand in front of guests. Air horns and other noisemakers are not allowed. Guests are encouraged to remain seated until the conclusion of the recessional. Graduates and guests may connect at the designated locations of their school/department (see map on last page). Graduation DVD recordings of the services will be available through the Campus Shop a few weeks after commencement. Visit saucampusshop.com or call 423.236.2152 to order. To enable all students to have a photograph of their graduation, arrangements have been made with Grad Images for a professional photographer to record the moment each graduate receives his or her diploma, plus two additional poses. After graduation, a 5x7 photo will be sent to each graduate as a gift from the university. Graduates have the option of ordering additional prints from Grad Images.

The Class of 2015 is creating an endowed scholarship fund to benefit future students. Once fully funded at $25,000, the Students 2 Students Endowed Scholarship will provide an annual scholarship of at least $1,000 to a student with demonstrated financial need. By choosing an endowed scholarship as our class gift, we are leaving a legacy that will benefit Southern students in perpetuity. We extend our deepest thanks to all who have given alongside us to help make this possible. Fundraising for this will continue over the next three years, and all are invited to join us in building this endowment at southern.edu/classgift.

Joyce Azevedo joined the Biology Department faculty in the fall of 1992 after completing her doctorate degree in cellular and molecular biology at the University of California at Riverside. Her enthusiasm for biology is quickly recognized by her students. Azevedo’s students affectionately call her “Dr. Joyce” and realize that the depth of knowledge she has shared with them in class gives them an advantage in professional exams and later in professional and graduate schools. One student commented, “I looked forward to the Genetics and Cell and Molecular sections on my (MCAT) practice tests because I knew that I did not have to worry about it.”

Keith Snyder, Ph.D., chair of the Biology Department, said, “Dr. Azevedo is the consummate teacher. She is joyful, caring, and tough. Her mastery of the courses she teaches allows her to sim-plify difficult concepts. Her mentoring attitude carries students through the difficult parts of critical thinking, enabling them to achieve more than they ever thought possible. She is loved and highly respected by her peers and students.” This is reflected in student comments as well. One wrote “The instructor is full of energy! She was passionate about teaching! She could explain ideas in multiple ways and was interested in seeing the student succeed.” Another student said, “Dr. Azevedo com-bines academic excellence with biblical values. Although she doesn’t force her beliefs on the class, it is clear that she teaches rigorous biology classes from a biblical perspective. This is why I came to Southern, to learn from professors like her.”

In addition to teaching, Azevedo supervises student research regarding ancient DNA. Her stu-dents are using skills acquired under her watch to extract DNA samples from plant tissue embedded in peat that was collected from Banks Island, British Columbia.

In recognition of her outstanding abilities to inspire students, maintain high standards, and practice highly effective teaching, Southern Adventist University is proud to present Joyce Azevedo with the President’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

Harold C. Mayer, Ph.D., has been teaching at Southern Adventist University since 2004 and currently serves as a professor in the School of Physical Education, Health, and Wellness. Last July, Mayer presented at the second Global Conference on Health and Lifestyle in Geneva, Switzerland. His three-part series was on Intelligent Health Energy Balance and Marketing Physical Activity, outlining the best practices of lifestyle control for metabolism efficiency and follow through with active lifestyle.

As director of the Human Performance Lab in Southern’s Hulsey Wellness Center, Mayer is in early nearly every morning testing clients. Mayer regularly mentors students in human performance/exercise physiology research and testing. During the last 10 years, he has collected data in an ongoing research study on metabolic efficiency to establish the best practices for energy balance, endurance conditioning and weight control.

In his spare time, Mayer practices what he preaches. At least once a day, he’s out leading a group of students on mountain bike excursions or fast and furious road bike rides. You could also find him giving lifestyle lectures for Focus HealthCare of Chattanooga’s 30-day live-in program.

Southern Adventist University is pleased to present the President’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship to Harold Mayer.

Stephen Ruf arrived on the campus of Southern Adventist University in 1996 after workng as a TV news reporter for WDEF in Chattanooga. He is an associate professor in the School of Journalism and Communication, teaching classes in broadcasting, journalism, and photography. He has served on numerous university committees and remains engaged in ongoing service to the greater community and his global church. As one administrator describes Ruf, “He is here to make the organization work.”

Ruf is highly respected by his colleagues as “a model of informed enthusiasm.” He uses Facebook to promote the university’s programs and “‘dazzles prospective students with what the School of Journalism and Communication can offer them.” He consistently and cheerfully assists anyone seek-ing his expertise, particularly in troubleshooting misbehaving cameras, computers, video projectors, sound systems, or wiring. He keeps his ear attuned to the media industry and uses his connections with communication professionals to secure meaningful internships and jobs for students.

Another colleague commented that Ruf’s life is one of constant service. In addition to video streaming funerals, graduations, weekend events, and special convocations, Ruf serves as an announcer on WSMC for “The Sound of Worship,” is a two-gallon donor for Blood Assurance, and volunteers as a TV technician for senior citizens needing assistance with low-power channels, such as 3ABN.

Ruf is the past president and a current member of the Society of Adventist Communicators. He has served the Seventh-day Adventist denomination as head writer and news producer for several General Conference gatherings.

Because of his example of emulating Christ’s quiet service behind the scenes whenever there is a need, Southern Adventist University is pleased to recognize Stephen Ruf as a worthy recipient of the Distinguished Service Medallion.

Loren Barnhurst, Ph.D., holds a high standard for every student but is also each student’s biggest advocate. One expressed it well by saying, “I have never had any other teacher who was so dedicated to helping students learn. He has created every resource a student could possibly need to succeed and made them all easily accessible on eClass.” Some of Barnhurst’s approaches are individualized and utilize unique learning experiences. He “makes up raps, fun phrases, animated videos, etc., all in an effort to help us succeed.”

Barnhurst’s care for students goes beyond learning strategies to master chemistry. One Air Force veteran and current student was impressed with Barnhurst’s Christ-like caring and compassion after the student explained to Barnhurst that he might seem depressed and detached from class because two close friends and previous supervisees had recently been killed in action. “To my surprise, Dr. Barnhurst asked if he could pray with me right then and there. I did not know that the loss of my best friends in war really touched his heart until my girlfriend (who took the same class at a different time) told me that Dr. Barnhurst cried in front of the class while giving the morning worship about friendships and how life is short.”

A student mentor in Barnhurst’s freshman-level Southern Connections class wrote that it was a privilege to work for him and see “firsthand how he truly cared for each and every student and their success both in and out of school. I have seen endless interactions between students and Dr. Barn-hurst, and each one is filled with his encouragement, willingness, understanding, and caring spirit.”

Because Loren Barnhurst consistently provides students with the tools to succeed and is always there for students by email and phone or in person, Southern Adventist University is proud to recog-nize him as a recipient of the President’s Award of Excellence for Commitment to Student Success.

Faculty and staff work side by side for the benefit of students at Southern Adventist University. “It is a rare day that Jamie Thompson isn’t spending large chunks of time assisting students,” writes a faculty member. “Her positive and energetic spirit are deeply attractive to students, and they frequently feel comfortable coming to her with questions they are reluctant to ask faculty.”

As office manager for both the English Department and History and Political Studies Department, Thompson shows her concern by consistently checking to make sure both faculty and students have their workplace, social, and spiritual needs met. One professor said “I see students in Jamie’s office on a regular basis, receiving advice and encouragement. She takes initiative in planning social events for our students, especially our student workers. She definitely goes above and beyond in giving her time and energy to support our majors. She orients new students, workers, professors, adjuncts, and chairs with diplomacy and practicality,” contributing to the success of programs as well as people.

Thompson is quick to “empathize with others’ struggles, such as a sick family member, and re-joices with them in triumphs, such as completing a senior project or getting a new job.” Perhaps her contributions are best summed up by the faculty member who commented that “our departments are richer and more nurturing because of Jamie’s consistent love for and service to our students.”

Because of her dedication to helping students succeed in their classes and assisting them in pre-paring for their chosen career, Southern Adventist University is proud to recognize Jamie Thompson as a recipient of the President’s Award of Excellence for Commitment to Student Success.

The mace is a traditional symbol used to communicate and designate authority. The Southern Adventist University mace was crafted in 1986 by John Durichek, a Southern alum. Southern’s mace represents its heritage and raison d’être (reason for existence). The base is of pine from Jones Hall, built in 1917 and razed in 1985. The main staff is of walnut. The seven rings represent completeness. The four-sided ebony segment is seen as Southern’s underlying educational philosophy—balanced mental, spiritual, physical, and social development for each student. The brass flames represent the Holy Spirit. Bearing the mace is the grand marshal, Lisa Clark Diller, chair of the University Senate and professor in the History and Political Studies Department. Her regalia is evergreen, the university’s traditional color.
