Backfiring from the chair:

Our Dullstroom breakfast run ended up being a full day run with the brave manne and poppies doing

a round trip of ± 620km, starting with breakfast at The Anvil Ale House and then an afterburner to

the now famous Ruby River Lodge.

Those in attendance:

Wells & Anita, Clive & Shirley, Peter & Eve, John (visitor), Lionel & Hannetjie, Big Rob, Mike O’D,

Nigel, Grant and Richard (visitor).

Our meeting point at Bimbo’s was under grey skies. Leaving at 07h30 we decided to take the toll

road out to Dullstroom as the hungry folk wanted to get there as quickly as possible! Arriving at

The Anvil Ale House we were met by very friendly staff and very quickly started placing our orders

for brekkies. The staff were somewhat frazzled by our group but coped pretty well, and the food

was good. I can most certainly vouch for the Trout Quiche. As for the beer, good, very good!

We left Dullstroom just as a thunderstorm was brewing and headed out to Loskop Dam via Belfast

and Stoffberg, the weather cleared up and not a drop of rain was experienced anywhere along our

route. At Ruby River the ladies wasted no time in taking off their boots and relaxing at the splash

pool,(note the no splashing sign).

The route back was a treacherous one as we contended with the local populations poor driving

habits and dodged a couple of goats on the Verena/Dennilton stretch. All in all it was a fantastic

ride and if anyone was as tired as I was, I’m sure they hit the sack pretty early.

Looking forward to many more day rides

Just a reminder: Don’t forget to complete the National Rally entry forms

and submit them along with your payment as instructed on the entry

form. I trust by now all have finalised their accommodation

requirements, if not – you are running out of time.

For those who don’t know;

Les has been in and out of hospital recently with severe pain caused in part by an operation he had

some time back. He is currently awaiting test results, please keep him in your prayers and thoughts as

we wish him a speedy recovery.

Robin is still taking it easy and misses the riding, wishing you all the best mate!

Rudi du Plessis will unfortunately be leaving UER as he is moving to George.

Till we ride again,

Captains Log: Sunday January 27th

We are sometimes most fortunate that the weather bureau makes mistakes as the expected

downpours on Sunday morning did not materialize and seven of us enjoyed a safe and brisk ride to

the Purple Cow restaurant in Centurion. The manne who came were:

Graham BMW 1300GT

Allen BMW 800ST

Gansen BMW 1200GS

Tjardt (Vis) Honda 800VFR

Nick Honda 1200VFR

Harry Honda 1300 Pan-euro

Trevor Triumph 1700T-bird S

Allen suggested that I lead the charge and Harry took up the rear-guard position as Mike C had

electricity problems at home and could not get his complex gate to open. We made good time to

Bapsfontein and cruised to the Rietvlei Dam turnoff.

There were no stragglers and we dondered on through Irene towards the Old Johannesburg Road

where I overshot the shortcut (new road to the P Cow). After a swift U-turn Allen took over as

arranged and we soon arrived at the restaurant to sit at a long table outside the main building.

Some of us availed ourselves of a fine brekky from the buffet and the rest ordered breakfast from

the a la carte menu. A couple of guys were flying model planes and helicopters to keep us amused

while we ate. Allen’s daughter Tammy also joined us for coffee and then it was time for us to leave

for other pastures back home.

Another fine ride, with very capable riders on magnificent steeds and we look forward to the next

sojourn into the unknown on Sunday morning as always.

Until next week when I’ll see-ya (disappearing) in da mirrors,

Twisty Two.

Cool-Dude!

On Saturday Erika & I attended the Suzuki 1500cc Trike Launch. What a machine, expertly built in

Germany and imported into the good old R.S.A. This trike looks like a pit-bull on steroids with the

growl to match. You don’t see many pit-bulls on the road so don’t expect to see many of these on the

road with the introductory price tag of R 350.000

Regard’s

Andrew Potgieter.
