I. What is a Galaxy?
Galaxy: A grouping of billions of stars and
other matter held together by gravity
Asteroids, planets, stars, gas, moons, dust,
life, nebulas, black holes, manmade things,
rocks, gravity, red giants, comets, water,
light
II. Galaxy Names
Galaxies are named based on their shape.
Spiral, Elliptical, Irregular
Spiral Galaxy
The most common
type of galaxy
Have a lot of dust,
and hot, bright, young
stars.
Brightest Galaxies
Spiral around center
Elliptical Galaxy
Usually circular or
oval
Reddish -colored
Lack gas and dust for
new star formation
Elliptical Galaxy about 450 million light
years away
Thought to be as massive as 100 billion of
our suns
Irregular Galaxies
No definite shape
Chaotic clusters of
stars
Possibilities:
Two Galaxies Collide
Very young galaxies
that haven't yet
become symmetrical
When galaxies collide- Here are some
actual Hubble pictures of galaxies that are about to, are colliding,
or will soon collide.
III. Our Galaxy
Milky Way Galaxy
Spiral galaxy
Artist’s drawing of our galaxy, MW, if seen from above.
Can you find the sun?
