FLAT CHARACTER• One-dimensional

• Only the basic characteristics necessary to perform their role

• Supporting roles only

ROUND CHARACTER• More facets to their

personality

• Develops throughout the story

• Not completely revealed until the end of story

• Personality is inconsistent.

STATIC CHARACTER• Traits are consistent

throughout

• No significant evolution of the character, no new characteristics introduced

DYNAMIC CHARACTER• Personality changes

throughout the story

• May go from weak to strong, and/or strong to weak

• Often the protagonist, but not always

STOCK CHARACTER• Represents stereotypical

traits

• May be represented by specific appearance, cultural, or situational traits

• easily recognizable, stereotypical traits

FOIL• Contrasting

characteristics to enhance those of another

• Often the antagonist, but not always

• Opposite of the hero

• Through the conversations, we gain insight into the main character’s background

• Sometimes has a temper, but still calm and wise
