ACCESSING E-BOOOKS WITHIN ATHENS

What is Athens, Dawson Books and

Ebrary?

When you log into Athens you will see the links to our e-book sites, as shown below:

• Athens is the platform which allows free access to our e-book collections.

• Dawson Books and ebrary are the two sites which host our e-book collections.

• Dawson Books is the site where we purchase and host e-books specifically bought for Ayrshire College.

• ebrary is the site which allows free access to around 400 additional e-books.

Accessing e-books in Dawson Books

Click on the Dawson Books link found in Athens.

To see all of the available e-books bought for Ayrshire College, in Dawson Books click on the ‘eBook Catalogue’ tab in the top left hand corner of the screen.

Selecting the e-booksScroll through the catalogue and select the e-books that are relevant to your course. Click on the small black star for each title, this will store each selected e-book in the ‘My Bookshelf’ area for easy access, and in your personal account. This account can be accessed by clicking on the ‘My Account’ tab at the top of the page.

Once you have selected a particular e-book, click the ‘read online’ icon to access the book.

Navigating through an e-bookNavigating through the e-book can be done three ways:

1. Use the ‘page forward’ or ‘page backward’ arrow keys to turn each page individually.

2. Click on the relevant contents page on the left-hand side of the screen.

3. Use the scroll bar on the top of the page.

FunctionsYou can take notes for each book by clicking on the ‘Notes’ tab.

Clicking on the ‘search’ tab allows you to search the

e-book for a selected word or subject.

To copy text from the e-book, click the ‘Copy’ tab and when prompted click OK. When a page or selected text is copied and pasted into a document it will allow automatic referencing.

To print pages, click on the ‘Print’ tab. When prompted, you will then be presented with various print options such as size, orientation, etc.

Accessing the e-books in ebrary

• Click on the ebrary link within Athens. Type into the search box the subject, keyword or author of the book you are looking for.

• You will be presented with a display page with links to e-books in relation to your search. Click on the title of any book you wish to access.

• Relevant books and personal notes can be stored in files accessed in the ‘Bookshelf’ tab.

• ebrary also provides an extensive range of ‘how-to’ guides via YouTube which simply and clearly explain the many functions that are possible with ebrary ebooks.

Navigating the e-books in ebrary

Once you have searched and selected a particular book to read, click on the title of the book and a page will be displayed, as per the following sample:

Functions with e-books in ebraryWhen you click on the text “Available for Online Reading” , the following page will be displayed which allows you to now read the e-book online, and also provides a number of functions such as copying, printing, adding notes, and referencing.
