    RESIDENTS: LONG OVERDUE

    Parow roads upgraded

    REYANA STEYN

    I

    twill be smoothdriving formotorists now

that Parow roads are being upgraded.

Improvements to Picton Road in Parow

Central and all roads in Parow West kicked

    off on Monday.

Roads will be milled out and resurfaced,

and bumpy roads are being re-tarred.

Other improvements will include all stop

streets being repainted; replacement of road

names and faulty traffic signs to be fixed.

These are busy roads and they must be

fixed, says Rick O Connell, councillor of

    the area.

    Upgrades

Hundreds of cars use the roads daily so

tomake things easier for people on theirway

to work the upgrading is taking place at

night to avoid any disruptions. The upgrade

to the roadswill also improve the lives ofmo-

torists and the entire community as it will

    prevent accidents from taking place.

He says the aimof the upgrade is to beauti-

fy the area andmake it safer for the commu-

    nity.

All the residents in the areawill be happy

as this road has been problematic for a

while. It will be safe for children and every-

one to walk on too, he added.

    High time

Parow resident Charne Hill says she uses

Picton Street frequently and that it is high

time that something is being done.

Im glad to see that the street is finally

being revamped to make it safe.

With the road in a bad condition it made

the area look bad and with the area it will

look much better. It was also easy for acci-

    dents to occur.

Another resident, Justin Prins, says he is

elated that the roadworks will be taking

    place at night.

I am happy that the road is being upgrad-

ed but also that they will only be working

on the roadatnight and that theupgradewill

not interfere while I drive to work.

O Connell says the full roadwork upgrade

is expected to be completed by the endof Feb-

    ruary.

    Verdagtemeld vermiste aan

    Charmaine Mare

    DESIRE RORKE

    as vermis aangemeld by dieKraaifontein-po-

    lisiekantoor kort na haar verdwyning.

Mare het drie weke gelede haar ouerhuis

in Kriel, Mpumalanga, verlaat om by haar

    Dievolgendedaghet ledevandieKraaifon-

tein-polisie plakkate met n foto van Mare

oral in die dorp aangebring. Twee dae later

het n verbyganger op haar erg verbrande

lyk in Darwinstraat afgekom.

vaagwas. De Jager is later ingeroep vir ver-

dere ondervraging en n soektog by die fami-

lie se huis het Mare se arms in n boks in die

    motorhuis opgelewer.

    moord.

Volgens kapt. Gerhard Niemand van die

Kraaifontein-polisie is die saak uitgestel tot

Donderdag vir verdere ondersoek, maar het

die beskuldigde intussen die slagogger se be-

    ne aanpolisie uitgewys,waarhydit langs die

    N2 naby Macassar gegooi het.

Die polisie het intussen bevestig die lyk-

skouing is afgehandel, maar hulle kan nog

nie bevestig of Mare verkrag is nie.

Onlangs is berigMare het Kaapstad toe ge-

komomkuns te studeer by n plaaslike kolle-

troubare bron betwis. Sy het net daar (by

die White-woning) opgedaag en daar was

geen sprake van enige formele losiesrelings

nie.

    Volgens dieselfde bron wasMare enWhite

se dogter vriende sedert hul jonger dae toe

    ANDR BAKKES

There has been a disconcerting rise in

    housebreaking incidents in Bothasig and

    surrounds recently where the perpetrators

gain entry into homes by stealthily remov-

    ing aluminium doors and windows.

House-owners who use these doors and

windows must be on their guard according

    to Bothasig police spokesperson, Const

    Noloyiso Rwexana.

    Unfortunately this warning comes too

late for a handful of Bothasig residents who

have already been burgled in this method.

One of these victims, Daniel Siebrits,

walked the extra mile by safeguarding his

homewhenhe inserted silicone into the cor-

ners of his aluminium window panes.

At the end of November Siebrits house

    was targeted by burglars.

The intruders removed the window of

my sons room. A noise woke him up, but

then he first went to the bathroom. When

he returned he saw someone with a flash-

light in his room. One of the intruders was

    halfway through the window opening,

grabbed my sons wallet from a table and

    ran off!

His sons wallet was later recovered near

the N1, but Siebrits realised they might not

    be that lucky again.

He did some experimenting of his own

and saw that it is ridiculously easy to gain

access to a house through an aluminium

    door or window.

Rwexana agrees, but she cannot comment

on whether it is much safer if one adminis-

    ters silicone.

She reckons the bestway to secure oneself

is to install an alarm, and if there is already

one, one should never hesitate to activate it.

She explains: People think because they

are in the house that they dont need to acti-

vate it. That is when it is even more impor-

tant. Burglar bars are also advisable. Home-

owners should be on their guard, especially

now that this type of crime is on the in-

crease. People must also call the police im-

mediately when they hear any unfamiliar

noise. Plasma screens, laptops and cameras

are currently the most targeted items.

A camerawas indeed one of the items that

was stolen this January from the house of

Elsab Thiart when burglars gained entry

    through aluminium windows.

It happened so silently. I heard a very

faint noise, then I investigated and saw the

man in our living room. He quickly fled

through the removed window, but not be-

forehemanaged to get his hands onmycam-

era and more importantly my revolver. My

husband and grandson were in the house as

well, so I guess it could have been much

worse. Someone could have been injured...

We are now quite paranoid for our safety...

Siebrits and Thiart both say theyve

heard of other people in the vicinity who

were also victims of this mode of entry that

    burglars use.

In one incidentmost of the housewas ran-

sacked while the owners were still asleep.

The next day they discovered their window

    neatly lying in their garden.

Siebrits concludes: I see this as some-

thing that residents should be made aware

of as it is the safety of our residents that

comes first. It is very easy to secure these

type of windows and can be done by owners

themselves. Simply pull out the rubber on

the inside of the window one at a time and

pump silicone in the openings and press the

rubber back. In most instances it is will be

sufficient to do the corners and middle sec-

tion at lengths of about 20 to 30 cm.

    Burglars target aluminiumwindows

An angel sent to help Siemie

Many stars have joined hands to raise funds for Simone Pienaar who is in need of a cochlear

    operation.

    REYANA STEYN

An array of local artists will be performing

at Tygerberg High School in a bid to raise

funds for a little girl who is in dire need of

    a cochlear implant.

Artists lined up for 30 January include

Nic Stevens, Dillon Lerm, Viljoen Retief,

Waldo Lotz, Marius Swanepoel, Wilco van

Wyk, Waldo Dekkers and Charn Hugo.

The fundraiser was arranged by a Parow

teenager, Bianca Haller (17) and her mom,

    Liza de Jager.

    TygerBurger reported last year (Selfless

    teenager also raising funds, TygerBurger,

4 September 2012) that Simone Pienaar,

fondly known as Siemie to her family, was

diagnosed as being deaf when she was two

years old and needs a cochlear implant. She

has also been diagnosed with Fanconi syn-

drome a disorder of the kidney tubes.

The family from Boksburg, Gauteng has

had to watch their daughter deteriorate as

her condition worsens and they are unable

to raise the R200 000 needed for a cochlear

    implant operation.

Their medical aid will only cover R22 500.

Her operation has had to be postponedun-

til the funds can be raised.

We started to plan this event end of last

year and got the go ahead only last week

from all the performers, says Liza.

This will be an amazing show from the

first singer until the last one, they are all

great performers that no one should miss.

Bianca was delighted to have been able to

meet with Siemie in the holidays.

After seeing her I am even more excited

to help her now. It is really hard work but

I have great people who stand behind me

and help me where they can. I would like

to do some more shows if I can through the

year with other performers who would be

interested to help Siemie as well.

Liza says she cannot believe her daughter

    has taken this initiative.

I am so proud of her, for a 17-year-old to

do something like this takes a lot. I will

stand behind her all the way until she has

achievedwhat she wants to. She is really an

amazing child with so much care for some-

    one else.

An angel sent to help Siemie.

The showwill take place at 19:00 and tick-

ets cost R50 per person and people who are

interested can get them from Bianca at sec-

ond break every day at the school or contact

    Liza on 074 467 1560 or Jaco on 072 111 3434.

Metro police officers arrested 41 suspects

for driving under the influence of alcohol

    and drug-related offences during patrols

and operations across the city this week-

end.Officers also issued 441 traffic fines and

    recorded 30 bylaw offences.

On Saturday 19 January officers arrested

10motorists for driving under the influence

of alcohol at a roadblock in Voortrekker

Road, Parow. Another four motorists were

arrested for the same offence in Atlantis.

A joint operation with the SAPS resulted

in the arrest of three motorists for driving

under the influence of alcohol, while anoth-

er three motorists were arrested for the

same offence in Parow, Bellville and the

    Cape Town CBD respectively.

    During routinepatrols in theMaitlandar-

ea, officers arrested one suspect for posses-

sion of illegal narcotics after he was found

with dagga. Officers arrested another sus-

pect in Lansport Road, Hanover Park, for

the same offence after he was found with 18

    packets of tik.

Police nabdrunk drivers, take drugs off street

Parow police arrested two suspects for

house robbery in Welgelegen last week.

The brazen suspects assaulted the domes-

tic worker with a gun and made off with

    items in the house.

On last Wednesday at 11:20 a domestic

worker in Kehrwieder Street noticed a sil-

ver-grey motor vehicle pass the residence

where she works and stop two houses

away, says Lieutenant Kevin L Williams,

    Parow police spokesperson.

While she was busy with the washing,

three men approached her and one spoke

Xhosa to her while the other two ran into

the house. She screamed and ran towards

the three-year-old child who was sitting in

    the front room.

Williams says in the house the woman

was grabbed and one man took out a gun

and demanded that she stop screaming and

hit her on her head with the gun.

Two of the suspects proceeded to the

rooms and the one with the gun moved out-

side and the woman had the opportunity to

activate the alarm system, he says.

The suspects fled the scene of the crime

with jewellery and a Samsung digital cam-

    era.

Police spotted the vehicle with two sus-

pects in 10th Avenue, Kensington and fol-

    lowed them to Maitland.

Two suspects aged 32 and 27 were arrest-

ed by Maitland police officers. They were

found with the stolen property in their pos-

session. They tried to sell the stolen proper-

    ty in Maitland.

The two suspects were arrested for house

robbery. One suspect is still at large and an-

yone with information can contact the po-

    lice on 021 929 7000 with information.

    Two arrested for house robbery

Since the inception of Operation Rubi-

con, much successes have been attained

    in the Parow area.

Operation Rubicon is the brainchild of

the cluster commander, Brig Darius van

der Ross, W/O Jacques Mostert of the

    Parow police said.

A plan was devised where members

from Parow such as shift, crime preven-

tion and sector managers work during

the hours in which these types of crimes

    are the most prevalent.

    Members from Parow have also

pledged to do extra duties during their

time off and are also supported by detec-

    tives and members, Mostert said.

They have also been joined by mem-

    bers ofBellville, Bothasig andGoodwood

who are also performing duties when

    they are on rest days.

According to Brig Van der Ross, the

fact that everyone is working together

shows the degree of support the cluster

stations have for each other and is also

    a force multiplier.

A large number of police members are

deployed on a daily basis, some in uni-

form and marked vehicles, while others

are in civilian clothes and unmarked ve-

    hicles.

Since the inception of the operation on

11 January, good successes have been

    achieved as numerous arrests were

made for the following crimes: posses-

sion of drugs and dangerous weapons, as

well as for murder and robbery.

    According to Mostert besides the

    drugs, various other dangerous items

which could have been used to commit

crimes have been taken off the street.

Themain goal of Operation Rubicon is

to turn up the heat even more on crimi-

nals in Bellville cluster, Mostert con-

    cluded.

    Turning up heat on crime

Three men have been arrested in connection

with the murder of a 34-year-old man who

was stabbed in the chest in Voortrekker

    Road.

The incident happened on Thursday 3 Jan-

    uary at 21:10.

A Parow police officer who was buying

himself food at Steers sawamancollapse out-

    side the food outlet.

When the officer went to check he saw the

man was holding his chest and blood was

coming from a wound near his heart, says

Lieutenant Kevin L Williams, Parow police

    spokesperson.

He contacted the ambulance, but on arriv-

al the man passed away. Later it was discov-

ered that the deceasedwas a 34-year-oldCam-

eroonian man who resided in Alcor Place in

    Voortrekker Road.

The Parow police started their investiga-

    tion and interviewedan eyewitnesswho said

it was three men who approached the man

and stabbed him. The suspects then fled the

    scene.

It is understood that an argument unfolded

    inside the deceased mans flat.

OnMonday last week at 16:10 Parow detec-

tives Warrant Officer Gideon Lotz and Con-

stable Songezo Mabonga arrested the sus-

pects from Elsies River aged between 21 and

    25.

One suspect has since turned state witness

against the others. The men will be charged

    with murder.

    Ooggetuie gesoek n ongeluk

    JANA BEKKER

Edward Jones (25) vanMonte Vista was vir

meer as n maand oor Kersfees en Nuwe-

jaar in die hospitaal nadat hy middel De-

sember in n tref-en-trap-ongeluk van sy

    motorfiets afgery is.

    Tygerberg-hospitaal ontslaan vyf weke n

    die ongeluk.

Eddie was op Saterdag 15 Desember om

ongeveer 21:00 op pad Danskraal toe om

vriende te ontmoet, toe n motor hom tref

    in Barnardstraat, Oakdale.

Ek weet ek het n kruising oorgesteek,

toe n motor oor n verkeerslig jaag. Verder

kleintoontjie gebreek. Dit was so hittete of

    s Edward.

Hy het reeds drie veloorplantings onder-

gaan. Vel van my linker- en regterbeen is

op my hak oorgeplant, s Eddie. Littekens

    stuur. Tussenmyvriende, familie enkolle-

gas was daar elke dag iemand wat vir my

kom kuier het, maar wanneer daar nie-

mandwas nie, was ek baie verveeld, s hy.

Veral my voet en ookmy ander been, waar

die vel afgehaal is vir die veloorplanting,

    pyn.

Terwyl ek in die hospitaal was, was die

pynnienaastenby so erg soos vandat ekont-

slaan is nie. Ek het in die hospitaal heeltyd

morfien ontvang, maar vandat ek by die

huis is, is dit baie, baie seer, s hy.

Eddie gaan nou tydelik by sy ma-hulle in

    Parow-Noord tuis. Hy hetmre (Donderdag

24 Januarie) weer opvolgafsprake by twee

    dokters.

tyd in my hele lewe, s hy.

    as beskermingsoffisier byDistrictWatch in

    Monte Vista begin werk.

Ooggetuies kan Cheri by 084 953 3569 bel.

Edward Jones is hier nog in sy

    hospitaalbed by die Tygerberg

hospitaal. Hy is op 15 Desember

    van sy motorfiets afgery. Di

    IrisHouse inWelgelegen started 2013with

    a bang.

On Friday 11 January, some of the Iris

House families, care team members and

founder Sue van der Linde, were filmed

live on the popular youth show

    Hecticnine9 on SABC 2.

Iris House is committed to enriching

the quality of life for special needs chil-

dren and young people with life-limiting

    or life-threatening conditions and provid-

    ing support for their families.

    Presenter Danilo interviewed Sue on

the set finding out what the centre offers

and also highlighting the needs of Iris

House in 2013 namely that they need a

    house.

Sue explained that they were hard at

work raising funds to purchase their own

property after a property on the grounds

of Karl Bremmer Hospital fell through.

    TheotherHecticnine9presenterAyanda

spoke with some of the families and chil-

dren getting a big hug from Julia Wright,

one of the IrisHouse children, who simply

    loves the show.

Iris House appealed for support tomake

the goal of R2 million rand in 2013 to pur-

chase their own property a reality.

They also encouraged peoplewith a pas-

sion for children in the northern suburbs

to join their growing volunteer team.

Iris House has a holistic approach to

caring for special needs children, this ex-

tends to educating people as to how to re-

spond to special needs children they may

encounter in their day to day lives, said

    Sue.

We are thrilled that South Africa got

to see some of our awesome children on

TV and realise they are just children and

    are not to be feared.

The children, parents and care givers

were treated to snacks and tons of fun

    backstage.

Iris House would like to thank the

Hecticnine9 crew and SABC 2 for giving

them the opportunity to highlight the

needs of special needs children every-

When Beakie had an unfortunate run-in

with a car in Simons Town in October, it

was clear that dining on fish would in fu-

ture present a problem for this cute pen-

guin. Knocked down by a speeding vehicle

his lower mandible was severely damaged

by the impact of the car and his lower beak

    split in half.

The bird was brought to the rehabilita-

    tion centre of theSouthernAfricanFounda-

tion for the Conservation of Coastal Birds

(Sanccob) in Table View where the veteri-

nary team tried several procedures, but to

    no avail.

Not ready to give up, Sanccobs rehabili-

    tation manager, Nicky Stander, consulted

a former Sanccob vet, Dr TertiusGous, who

in turn got in touch with Dr Gerard

    Steenkamp, an experiencedveterinaryden-

tist based at the University of Pretoria.

After examining photos of the penguins

beak, Dr Steenkamp was confident that he

could mend the mandible and offered to do

the reconstructive surgery free of charge.

Tracy Shaw, from the National Zoologi-

cal Gardens (NZG) in Pretoria agreed to

take care of the penguin at the zoo.

With a flight-sponsorship by Bid Air Car-

go (CapeTown), Beakiewas flown to Johan-

nesburg in his own personal enclosure

and was taken to the faculty of veterinary

science of the University of Pretoria in

Onderstepoort in preparation for the big

day. On 18 December, he underwent a CT

scan and Dr Steenkamp performed the sur-

    gery.

When the brave little patient came to, he

had a beautiful new beak, with the help of

some delicately placed stitches, pins, wire,

and dental acrylic. The operation was very

    successful andBeakiewas taken to theNZG

to get back on his feet.

Since the operation, Beakie has been un-

der the post-operative care of Dr Adrian

Tordiffe, who administered a 14-day course

of antibiotics to fight off any potential infec-

tions to the wound. The first few days he

was very sleepy and claimed a permanent

spot in the colonywhere he dozed alongside

his 32 new penguin friends. At first, he

wriggled a lot during feeding times, but be-

    camemore comfortable as thedayswentby.

After threeweeks, he surprised everyone at

the NZG by coming right up to the bucket

and taking his first fish all on his own.

    Nowhepusheshisway to thebucket and

is really starting to show his own special

personality. The big adventure of Beakie

has proved that the endangered African

    penguin ismost certainly themost resilient

of species, and we need to do everything in

our power to help save these incredible lit-

tle birds, said Francois Louw, of Sanccob.

Beakiewill be flown back to Sanccob and

released at Boulders Beach, Simons Town.

surgery to his beak after he was knocked

down by a vehicle in Simons Town.

    RAADSHEER DIRK SMIT

    SPEAKER: STAD KAAPSTAD

A dog that had been living on her own for

about four months at the Cobble Walk shop-

ping centre in Durbanville, has been cap-

tured recently and is now looking for a lova-

    ble forever home.

The dog, which has a keen preference for

KFC, has either run away from home or has

    been abandoned by her family.

Whichever it was, no family has come for-

ward to claim her so far, said Joan Master-

    son of the Petfinders organisation.

She evaded capture for months until we

managed to secure a humane dog trap from

    the SPCA.

We put some KFC in it and finally man-

aged to rescue this little dog on Sunday 13

January. She has turned out to be a real little

darling very playful, loves people and other

dogs and loves kids, said Masterson.

They now need to find a home for her as

the man who rescued her, has three large Al-

sations who are not taking too kindly to her.

However, we found that she has become

very attached to her rescue daddy as a home

was found for her with a family with a labra-

    dor.

The two dogs got on like a house on fire

until the rescue daddy left! she said.

Missy, as the dog is now called, escaped

through a window to try and follow her res-

cue daddy after he left and he had to turn

around and go through a whole process of

searching for her again until she was found.

    So, she has separation issues.

We are looking for someone that will

adopt herwho is at homemost of the day, has

a very secure yard andwhowill give her spe-

cial love andattention so that she canbecome

an integrated part of a family again.

She would have to be an inside doggy. So

far we have not found that special person or

    family.

She is black and white, three years old

and the cutest little dog out. She is medium-

sized and in very good health. She will be

spayed before placing at her new home.

Anyone interested in adopting her, can

    contact Leon Butor on 021 976 1720 (o) or 082

    887 7352 with enquiries.

A strict home check will be done before

Missy is placed with anyone and follow-ups

about her well-being will also be done.

    ANDR BAKKES

The odds of finding someone who has

dedicated 20 years of his/her life to vol-

untary service is slim, so it is indeed a

long shot to find a husband and a wife

    who have done this together.

Gary (54) and Shirley Mller (51) of

Bothasig have been serving as volun-

teers for the City of Cape Towns Disas-

ter Risk Management Centre since the

    90s.

They have seen riots, blazing fires, fa-

tal accidents, gunshot and stab wounds,

    and people in desperate need.

    Alternatively, they have also wit-

nessed tears of joy, rejuvenation, recon-

ciliation and hugs that seem to last for-

    ever.

Making a difference for no compensa-

tion is probably the most noble thing

one cando in a society that has been con-

    sumed by isolation and self-interest.

They received a pat on the back by the

city inDecember last year at the first an-

    nual Disaster Risk Management Volun-

teer Awards along with 104 other vol-

    unteers.

    The volunteers outstanding dedica-

tion to duty, equates to 985 years of vol-

untary service to safeguard Cape Town.

About 45 of those years were contrib-

uted by the Mller-family, who are cur-

rently based in the Milnerton unit.

Says Gary: I started in May 1990 and

Shirley started one year after me. Those

days it was Civil Defence and then

changed to Civil Protection. It started

when we took our son to an open day at

Milnerton fire station. There was a stall

that elaborated a bit on this volunteer

programme and I thought it was fasci-

    nating!

Garys love for first-aid was the cata-

lyst for his enlistment and since then he

has used this knowledge to save hun-

    dreds of lives.

Just this Saturday he started at 18:30

and only signed off at 03:30. In this time

    theyattended toamotoraccident, a stab-

bing incident of a youngster, a house

robbery in Table View and a suspected

    heart attack at Killarney racetrack.

It often happens that injured or sick

people are taken to the fire station be-

fore they go to the hospital, so one mo-

ment the volunteers could be keeping

themselves busy in the operations room

and then they are tasked with emergen-

    cy CPR.

Gary spent more than 400 hours last

year doing voluntary work at the Mil-

nerton unit. He also works for ER24, so

    there is precious little Gary-time.

Shirley used to be more active in the

the care and comfort section of the unit,

but these days she has become less in-

volved due to the demands of her day-

time job at Trafalgar Property Manage-

    ment.

When asked why people should con-

    sider becoming volunteers she re-

sponds: The medical staff we have at

the moment are so over-worked. People

sit on their backsides and do nothing!

Why dont they give something back to

    the community?

Gary is also the chairperson of the lo-

cal neighbourhood watch, part of the

community policing forum and has pre-

viously helped out at the victim support

    unit.

Youngsters from as young as 16 can

    become volunteers at the Milnerton

unit, which keeps them off the streets.

Over the years there have also been

many who used this as a stepping stone

    to become firefighters and paramedics,

    he adds.

    Gary and Shirleys stories captivate

one and all, so in many ways they are

compensated in experiences and a feel-

    ing of making a difference.

Sometimes they will just walk around

in somemall then someonewill come up

to themand thank them for saving some-

ones life or delivering a baby.

Half of Du Noon can be named after

me since I delivered them into this

    world! laughs Gary.

    Volunteers enlistedwith the city have

played an important role in assisting

during major incidents and disasters in

Cape Town, such as major wildfires,

flooding and fires in the informal settle-

ments and even dealing with oil spills

    along the coastline.

V Contact Gary on 083 402 9218 if you want to

join any of the organisations he belongs to.

    Swaak ouers

    soms oor hul

    skuldige kroos

Hulle s as jy as ouer nog jou kinders

onder een kombers kan toemaak, het jy

nie bekommernisse nie. Dis eers wanneer

eintlike waarheid iets anders, iets lelikers

is.

    nie saak watter onverantwoordelikheid of

wil glo iewers is my liefkind steeds te

bespeur te midde van dit alles.

    Mas staan hulle moordenaar-kinders

hulle by die media.

spaar. Hulle wil h die kinders moet

steeds glo hul pas is goeie mense, mense

wat vir hulle lief is. Daarom sal ouers die

waarheid toesmeer ter wille van hul

    kinders.

    ouer is.

We would like to add our

    support to the sentiments

    expressed recently by Lilly of

La Rochelle and to the cam-

paign by the City of Cape

    Town to encourage residents to

    donate food, clothing and

    money to registered charities

    rather than directly to beggars.

In a recent cleanup of the

    Kenridge Park lower dam by

    the ratepayers association, we

    recovered four large bags of

    rubbish made up of clothing

    items, packaged food and drink

    containers.

It was fairly evident that the

    food and clothing had been

    provided by local residents as

acts of charity to our local

    community of homeless

    persons.

    It was equally evident that

    they had inspected the con-

    tents, removed anything to

their liking and tossed the rest

    into the dam.

    Perhaps the 10 empty bottles

    of brandy we recovered

    provide an indication of their

    real preferences.

In addition to using the dam

as a refuse dump, they also

    drop your unwanted fresh food

    donations into the park refuse

bins, where it sits festering in

the sun for as long as a week.

Spare a thought, if you will,

for the workers who have to

empty these bins, for I can

    assure you from personal

    experience that it leaves you

    needing a long shower, a

    change of clothes and a

    replacement breakfast.

    Epos

I just want to say thank you for

the article on the (New compu-

    ter scam, TygerBurger, 16

    January).

    On Friday afternoon, 18

January I received a call and

    answered the phone, but there

was no answer. I said hello

    several times, but no one

    answered.

I put down the phone and

    later again the same thing

happened. I kept quiet also and

heard a womans voice. I said

hello back and the call ended.

I gave the phone to my

    husband and then the call

ended. I went to inquire if the

    phone call could be traced.

They said no and told me to put

identify call on my phone or

    Thanks for the scam

    warning I could

    have been a victim

I write to you in light of the

    recent news events regarding

    cyclists safety on our roads.

I believe the safety of cyclists

    should be their responsibility

as well as the other road users,

    but more so their own.

I use the Bottelary Road on a

daily basis and it angers me to

    see the cyclists disregard for

    motor vehicles on the road.

    They drive outside the yellow

    line in groups resulting that

    motorists have to come to

    almost a standstill to ensure

    not knocking them, and then

the motorists has to either stick

    behind them or the motorists

    have to endanger their own

lives by having to drive far

    right into oncoming traffic just

    to avoid knocking them down.

    When we as motorists

    approach stop streets these

    cyclists will merely weave

through traffic and then stop in

    front of the motorists without

    any regard for us. Government

should pass a law that all

    cyclists should register their

    cycles and have a registration

    number displayed with the

    addition of rear view mirrors.

    Tsoenami-plant stonk haar

    ANDR BAKKES

Tannie Liekkie Jordaan (77) het n woon-

stel vol verrassings. In die een hoek is daar

n unieke koffietafel, in die ander is daar

tientalle porseleinpoppies en aan die ander

kant van die vertrek staan n skootreke-

    naar.

durend laat kopkrap? Die geleerdes noem

    dit n Kalanchoe daigremontiana Itulehti!

Ja, gelukkig is die naam selfs verwarren-

groot Latynse woorde is blykbaar Moeder

van duisende. Die plant staan ook bekend

as die Duiwel se Ruggraat, Alligator-
