Two poachers were arrested when 676abalone with an estimated street valueof R119 000 were discovered in their ve-

hicle last week Wednesday.While theywere allegedly poaching abalo-

ne in Melkbosstrand. The local Anti-Poach-ing Unit (APU) kept an eye on them andalerted the police.When theofficers arrivedon scene the sus-

pects raced away in their vehicle and aftera high-speed pursuit the getaway car was fi-nallyhauled in thanks toMelkbosstrandandAtlantis police.Three suspects fled on foot, but two divers

were arrested.A member of the APU who wishes to re-

main anonymous says: “It is important notto reveal toomuch about our operations andmethods. The less these poachers know thebetter.”According to him the APU relayed infor-

mation of suspicious activity just off thecoast at about midnight.“We monitored the suspects closely for a

while,” he adds.The Melkbosstrand sector van was in the

immediate vicinitywhen the policewere no-tified and reacted quickly. When the policeapproached the vehicle it sped off and thechase ensued through Melkbosstrand andonto the old Mamre Road where police vehi-cles from Atlantis had set up a roadblock.The vehicle was also impoundedwhen the

two suspects were arrested.The APU member says there are between

10 and 15 dedicated volunteers who monitorthe coast along Melkbosstrand, but they arealways in need of more help.“We know which areas are being targeted

locally by poachers, but the same challengescan be found all along the coast, from Yz-erfontein to Pearly Beach. South Africa hasan endemic species of abalone that can befound nowhere else in the world.”

Grysbok has a close shaveA six-month-old baby grysbok, which wasinjured by a water mongoose on Intaka Is-land at Century City, is now back with hismother after being nursed back to healthby dedicated staff.

Alan Liebenberg, Century City’s envi-ronmental manager, said visitors to Inta-ka Island spotted the baby grysbok eing at-tacked by a water mongoose over the pastweekend.

“They managed to frighten off the watermongoose and summoned one of our rang-ers who carried the grysbokkie to safety.On examination by the vet it was estab-lished that its lame back leg was coveredin bites. Thankfully this was only tempo-rary and the bites were superficial. Thevet treated the grysbokkie and we kept itin a box in the Intaka Island Environmen-tal Education Centre with staff adminis-tering antibiotics and feeding it with a sy-ringe and a diet of water and fresh leaves.”

Liebenberg said after a few days it wasalmost fully recovered and it was releasedback onto the island.

“It cried for its mother who answered itscry and obviously came to fetch it as wesaw two sets of tracks close together ashort time later.”

Liebenberg said this was not the firsttime a grysbok had been attacked by a wa-ter mongoose on Intaka Island and the sizeof the water mongoose population on theisland was of growing concern to them.

“They are not only threatening the grys-bok but they have chased away many ofour nesting birds as they have been rob-bing the nests of eggs.”

Liebenberg said the Intaka Island Blou-

vlei Environmental Committee, whichoversees the running of Intaka Island,would be meeting with Cape Nature short-ly to try and find a solution to the problem.

He added that grysbok were returned toCentury City in 2010, 14 years after theyhad last been spotted in the area.

“One was a pregnant female, the othera younger male but the first offspring didnot survive long.”

Op Woensdag 23 Oktober het die HoërskoolBellville geskiedenis gemaak met die ope-ning van sy mini-astrobaan.

Dit was ’n droom van die beheerliggaamom hierdie astro-hokkieveld die lig te laatsien.

Dit was ’n uitsonderlike dag van groothistoriese waarde. Dit is die eerste keer indie geskiedenis dat die beheerliggaam diestap geneem het om ’n lening aan te gaanom ’n projek van hierdie omvang te voltooi.

Met die astro se opening het die skool ver-der geskiedenis gemaak deurdat die Hoër-skool Bellville se langslewende leerders,Margaretha Lochner en Andries du Plessis,die astro-baan geopen het.

Lochner was tot 1940 ’n leerder aan dieHoërskool Bellville. Sy was self ’n hokkie-speler. Op 11 Oktober 2013 het sy 90 jaar oudgeword.

Hierdie oudleerder is nog lus vir die leween sy sê dat sy ten minste drie maal ’n weektot 23:00 en self tot 0:00 saans brug en canas-ta saam met haar vriende speel.

Du Plessis was een van die eerste leerderswat in 1941 aan die Hoërskool Bellville ge-matrikuleer het. Hy, sy oorlede vrou, huldogter en kleinseun (dus drie geslagte), wasalmal leerders aan die Hoërskool Bellville.Hy het duidelik aangedui dat hy nie 89 jaarvoel nie. Hy doen nog elke oggend sy oefe-ninge in die gimnasium.

Lochner en Du Plessis het amptelik diebaan geopen deur elkeen ’n bal in die doel-hok te slaan. Dit was voorwaar ’n emosione-le oomblik. Al die eregaste en toeskouershet spontaan opgestaan en hulle toegejuig.

Deon du Plessis, die skoolhoof, het gesêdat elke droom ’n klein begin het. Die skoolse wens is dat elke hokkiespeler die kanssal aangryp om hom- of haarself te verbeterdeur van die pragtige fasiliteit gebruik temaak.

Hy het verder aangedui dat die baan indie skool se kleure voltooi is: Die rooi, sodathokkiespelers met vuur en krag sal speel;goud, sodat elke speler met die regte gesind-heid, naamlik met harte van goud, sal speel’en blou, sodat elke hokkiespeler met dietrots en tradisie van die Hoërskool Bellvillein gedagte hul drome sal verwesenlik.

The average false fire alarm costs the rate-payer between R2 000 to R3 000 per call, de-pending on the distances travelled and vehi-cles being mobilised.This could involve aminimumof onevehi-

cle, or a maximum of five response vehiclesfor such an alarm.This increases operating costs for the

service and ultimately affects the responsecapability of the Fire and Rescue Service.A false alarm call could ultimately result

in the loss of life or property due to responsevehicles having to be called from another in-cident, or fire station, with the resulting re-sponse times affecting emergency opera-

tions.This according to De Grendel Subcouncil

chairman James Vos who received this in-formation from the Fire andRescue servicesas well as a reliable security companysource.The Fire and Rescue service has regis-

tered over 160 false alarm incidents over theperiod April to June 2012.This equates to approximately 8% of inci-

dents responded to, being a waste of energyand ratepayers’ money.The number of false alarms for 2013 will

still be calculated at the end of the financialyear.

False fires ‘waste tax money’

Each year during fireworks season, count-less animals and humans are left injuredand traumatised by these so-called “festivepleasures”.Whether over Guy Fawkes (5 November),

Diwali (3 November), or on New Year’s eve,members of the public are urged to be mind-ful of the dangers of discharging fireworksas well as what the law says about the useof firecrackers.“The SPCA is opposed to the use of any

fireworkswhich emit a loudnoise, due to thetrauma and injuries they cause animals. Be-cause animals are able to hear awider rangeof sounds than humans can, the sound fromfireworks is at least seven times louder tothemand therefore their natural response isto try and escape the sound with sometimestragic consequences,” said Cape of GoodHope (CoGH) SPCA inspectorate manager,Moyo Ndukwana.The Animal Protection Act clearly states

that “it is illegal for anyperson to terrify anyanimal” yet despite the SPCA’s efforts to ed-ucate the public on the dangers and legali-ties of using fireworks and lobbying govern-ment for a total ban on the use of fireworks,injuries and trauma to animals occur eachyear during fireworks season.The Firearms and Explosives Ordinance

Act also makes it illegal for any child under

the age of 16 to use or buy fireworks and itis illegal to use or sell fireworks without anofficial permit except at an officially desig-nated site. A rare mugging in the parking area of CanalWalk Shopping Centre occurred last week.

It happened on Thursday night when awoman grabbed a cellphone out of the handof the victim sitting in a car.

The incident apparently happened nearentrance six, while the complainant wasdriving in her car, the suspect approachedher and started talking to her.

Within moments the suspect stuck herhand inside the vehicle and then ran to-wards a getaway car just a few metres away.

According to the victim there were fourother occupants in the dark-green ToyotaCorolla.

Milnerton police spokesperson, W/ODaphne O’Reilly, says Canal Walk is veryrarely targeted by opportunistic criminals,

so this is one of the first incidents she’sheard of.

The incident, according to her, couldhave been prevented if the complainantkept her phone concealed from the suspectduring the conversation.

“Something that happens far more regu-larly in the precinct is when people walkaround with their cellphones clearly visi-ble.

“We advise strongly against this, becauseit is tempting for opportunistic criminals tograb it and run away,” she explains.

According to the centre’s website, it hasemployed Fidelity Security Services.

Awitness to a crime inMaitland tried to cutoff the escape route of armed robbers, but inthe process his vehicle was hijacked.Two suspects from Nyanga have sincebeen arrested.Local police spokesperson, W/O Siyabule-la Vukubi, elaborates: “Last week Wednes-day at approximately 13:20 police were cal-led to attend a business robbery inVoortrek-ker Road. According to a Du Noon community lead-er, Andile Peter, about 15 000 people fromaroundCapeTownwill be gatheringat thelegislature onWednesdaymorningwherethey will be demanding better housing.

Thousands of these protesters will berepresenting Du Noon.

He also says that the strike will includethose who prefer going to work.

“We will stop them, because they tooneed new houses,” says Peter, before add-ing that people will meet at the legislatureat 10:00.

Milnerton police are completely una-ware of any protest or strike action, andspokesperson W/O Daphne O’Reilly saysthere has been no official application toprotest.

Buyelwa Mayende, secretary for Ward104 for the South African National CivicOrganisation (Sanco), says she is not inthe position to comment extensively, butshe concedes that there will indeed be alarge strike action.TygerBurger phoned a fewDuNoon res-

idents and all of themheard about the pos-sible protest, but not one could confirm it.

The rumour will only be confirmed ordenied on Wednesday morning.TygerBurgerwas first alerted to the pos-

sibility of anothermass action strike (sim-ilar to the one at the end of July) on theFacebook page, Du Noon.

The post, which was made on 28 Octo-ber, read: “It’s confirmed – the strike:Wednesday the 30th. Let’s get talking!”

This post quickly evoked several re-sponses.

The uncertainty around this possibilityalone has been keeping everyone in DuNoon and surrounds on their toes.TygerBurger reported on the previous

protest extensively in the article entitled“We want land or else...”

Back then thousands of peoplemarcheddown Koeberg Road and prevented otherDu Noon residents from going to work onthe day.

Traffic was also severely affected.In July Sanco secretary Mayende war-

StaceyMarinus fromDurbanville has beeninspiring others to take up acrobatics sincethe age of three.

Now in her 10th year, Stacey is still a nat-ural when it comes to contorting into posi-tions that make onlookers gasp for air.

She was recently honoured for being thebest “Title Junior Solo” performer in herage group at Sun City’s American DanceAwards. This is the third year running thatsomeone from Dance United School ofDance in Melkbosstrand has come backwith this prestigious award.

It also means she qualifies to compete inthe South African team at the NationalChampionships in Boston, USA, whichwillbe held next year July.

There will be more than 3 000 dancersthere next year.

Suffice to say her mother Karen and herteacher, the owner of the dance school, Lie-zl Künz, are both over the moon and beam-ing with pride.

WhenTygerBurger askedKarenwho Sta-cey got her abundant talent from shelaughed. One got the idea that she suddenlythought of her husband trying to touch theback of his head with his feet.

“Probably more from her mother,” shelaughs again. Karen wasn’t a dancer her-self, but she always wanted to do it.

Her teacher Liezl continues: “Thereweremore than 900 entries into this year’s eventat Sun City. This is a huge honour for Sta-cey.”

Liezl is just as proud of her other dancers,who also shone in Sun City.

Some 18 dancers participated and theycame back with nine “ultimate golds” plusspecial judges’ awards, four “ultimategolds”, one gold, one “high silver” and fourtrophies.

Stacey practises regularly and intensely,so it’s no surprise that her passion for whatshe does has brushed off on her peers atGene LouwPrimary School inDurbanville.

Liezl reckons not everyone can be cham-pion dancers, but every single person canbenefit from dancing. She says: “When myown child started doing hip-hop at my stu-dio his concentration levels increased tre-mendously in his school work.”

Besides Stacey, other children from thedance school who qualified for the event inboston are Justin de Nobrega, Adrian Wil-liams, Mathew Fortuin (who was runner-up in the “SA TeenMale Dancer of the Year2013”), Juan-Marc Loretz, Luc Kunz andAshley Engelbrecht.

Other competitors were Stephanie Bar-nard, Tamsyn deWet, TevinWiener, Abby-Gail Engelbrecht, Jonathan Matroos, Adri-enne Victor, Bellannca Schelhase, KiaraKekana, Sarah O’Brien, Emily Heinz andJoy Brown.

In die praktyk gebeur dit natuurlik nie.By elke verkiesing kry jy nog derduisen-de mense wat eenvoudig nie die moeitegedoen het nie, of eenvoudig nie omgeenie. Baie redeneer dat “my stem tog geenverskil gaan maak nie”. In ’n demokra-tiese land is dit natuurlik nie ’n misdaadom nie te stem nie. Jy het die reg omsulke besluite vir jouself te neem.

The Nkqubela Project recently held their an-nual “Shoebox Party”with 217 children fromDu Noon aged between five and six years.The Nkqubela Project (which means

progress) is an umbrella project consisting ofeight daycare centres in Du Noon .Representatives managed to get 217 shoe-

boxes filled with toiletries, a toy, an item ofclothing, a colouring-in book and crayons, atennis ball for boys, a skipping rope for thegirls and sweets.These were handed over to the children on

19 October.The children were transported by Golden

Arrow buses and arrived in colour coded T-

shirts (signifying the day care centre theycome from).Upon arrival they each received a cold

drink and a packet of chips.There were 18 volunteers who helped out

during the day.This project is headed by Cathy Hartley

A 76-year-old senior citizen from Brooklyn,Sina van Wyk, says she was treated badlyby the City of Cape Town’s Dial-a-Ride(DAR) service.She claims that the service is terrible and

after she allegedly contacted themon sever-al occasions they refused to help her as theywere always overbooked.However, Ward 55 councillor Bernadette

le Roux sheds some light on the topic.“The procedure is that you have to book

at least one week in advance. Many peopleare confused.“Confusion sets in when a person re-

quests a booking and they are told DAR isfully booked for that date.“However, we will keep them on a wait-

ing list,” Le Roux said.She further added that people just pre-

sume that if they have not heard from DARthat it is fine to expect the service for thatday. Nevertheless, they are told theywill becontacted should there be a cancellation,”she said.But, Van Wyk said she had made book-

ings well in advance and also qualifies forthe service since she makes use of a wheel-chair.“I phoned to book a service multiple

times, and was told that they were fullybooked, even when I tried to book sevendays ahead of time. This is just simply im-possible,” Van Wyk said.Brett Herron, mayoral committee mem-

ber of transport forCapeTown takes onVanWyk’s allegations.He said that currently the city is operat-

ing with 30 vehicles while there are morethan 6 000 registered applicants, many ofwhom are on a waiting list.This might be one of the reasons why en-

quiries are back-logged and phones are con-stantly ringing.“Currently the service has 6 000 users,

and we are currently only able to transportan average of 296 passengers per day.“We occasionally receive complaints

about the service but these complaints arenot unique to the current service providerand we received occasional complaintsfrom the previous provider as well. Gener-ally speaking the users seem to be satisfiedwith the service,” Herron said.Herron added that the city is reviewing

the current DAR business plan and is seek-ing to integrate the service with the main-stream public transport system where it isaccessible in order to extend the service tomore people with disabilities.He added that the DAR public transport

service has limited capacity and is exclu-sively for those persons who are physicallyunable to access mainstream public trans-port. Applicants must also undergo an Oc-cupational Therapist assessment.“DAR’s challenge is to extend the service

to those who we are not currently able toaccommodate due to the service being over-subscribed. We are developing a policy onuniversal accessibility which will addressmobility for special needs commuters.“Our MyCiTi bus service is designed to

Every nowand again something spectacularhappens.Many people miss these fleeting and en-

chanting moments, but none of them was atthe Ostrich Range on Saturday.It was impossible not to be captivated by

the colour explosions.And underneath the blue and orange and

green and pink there were care-free hu-mans!More than 6 000 adults, teenagers and tod-

dlers made their way to the venue nearMelkbosstrand to party and paint theirhearts out in the FedGroupColourmeCrazy5 km Run and Colour Fest.Their immaculate white attire temporari-

ly glowed in the warm sunlight and then

tons of powder paint blotted out the sun.Soon people gathered at the starting line

in anticipation for the “paint stops” alongthe way. Once there the staff declared waron the masses and bombarded them withenough paint to thoroughly depress the pro-lific Picasso.Just a few paint stops later and evenmoth-

ers would not be able to recognise their ownchildren.Then the music festival began and people

bathed in hypnotic tunes until late.Once home, they bathed again.And again.And finally, the only thought that lingered

This year is quite a signifi-cant year for the WesternProvince Blood Transfu-

sionService as itmarks the 75thanniversary of the organisa-tion.On the historic day of 24 Octo-

ber 1938, the first meeting of theCape Peninsula Blood Transfu-sion Service was held. Todaythe organisation is known asone of the longest-runningblood transfusion services inAfrica.During the 1930s, blood trans-

fusion practice developed swift-ly in response to the demanddriven by the outbreak of theSecond World War. About 200blood donors enrolled withinthe first three months.Blood transfusionwas initial-

ly very basic as transfusionswere done directly from donorto recipient with only a screenseparating them from each oth-er.During its firstmonth of oper-

ations, the service performed amere 30 transfusions. In 1939,the service established its firstblood bank. Progress was madeand on 1 June 1942 the serviceobtained its own premises inCape Town where three donorscould be accommodated. At thistime blood was collected inglass Horlicks milk bottles,known as “May Wests”.During 1949 the first mobile

unit was put into action. Theservice began to recruit donorsthroughout the country and

this actively prompted thechange of name to the WesternProvince Blood TransfusionService.The increased demand for

blood saw a second mobile unitput into action.During the 60s over 50 000 do-

nors donated blood in the prov-ince and 352 clinicswere visitedby the mobile units. In 1969 theservice employed 160 staffmem-bers, which allowed for the col-lection and distribution of al-most 7 000 units of blood permonth.It was indeed a memorable

day for the organisation when,in 1966, the service was closelyinvolved with the first hearttransplant that took place atGroote Schuur Hospital.After severalmoves, the serv-

ice settled at its current head of-fice in Pinelands in April 1990.Blood donation takes only 20

to 30 minutes of your time, eve-ry 56 days. If you are betweenthe ages of 16 and 65, weighmore than 50 kg, are in goodgeneral health and lead a safesexual lifestyle, consider donat-ing blood. “Herleef is een van daaiprojekte wat na my toe ge-kom het,” verduidelik hy.

“Ek het altyd geweier(om ’n Christelike albumop te neem), omdat as jy so’n opname maak, word dit mos besigheid,”sê hy verder.

“In ’n geestelike wêreld voel ek moet daar’n vrye vloei van inligting in jou uitsettewees, want jy hoef dit nie te kontroleer nie,want die hart is mos reg.”

Chris het met Christian Art Media gewerktoe hy Droomland vrygestel het, wat hysaam met die Drakensbergse seunskoor op-geneem het.

Chris sê hy dink Christian Art Media hetdie versoek reg bewoord en hulle het homreg benader toe hulle verlede jaar navraagoor ’n geestelike album gedoen het. Boonophet hy gevoel dit is die regte tyd. “En toe geeek toe,” sê hy.

Die 12 liedjies op Herleef is geïnspireerdeur die teks van ou psalms en gesange enChris sê dit was ’n baie vinnige proses omdie teks te kies wat hy gebruik het.

“Ek het dieselfde proses gebruik as wat ekingespan het met die toonsetting van IngridJonker se werk,” sê Chris. Hy verduidelik:“Dis letterlik omdieboekoop te slaan, te kykna die gedig of na die teks, en as dit onmidde-lik tot jou spreek, dan weet jy dis reg.”

“Dan vroetel jy rond op die kitaar tot jy’n akkoord kry en as jy daai akkoord kry,

Sunday 3 November sees the CapeMulti CarClub once again hosting their popular CapeClassic Car Show at the Northerns-Good-woodRugbyFields corner ofDeGrendal andMcIntyre Streets, Parow, just off the N1.The 2013 event promises to continue thetradition of offering family entertainment atan affordable price with no fewer than 34Classic Car and Motorcycle Clubs partici-pating of which the Crankhandle Club shallhave the largest display with 80 vehicles.Within this display will be the oldest carat the show, a 1901 Mercedes-Benz, sur-rounded by a selection of English cars of abygone era such as Austin, Morris, Bentleyand Rolls-Royce with the odd Armstrong-Siddeley in between.For speed enthusiasts the Western Prov-ince Motor Club will have a good turnout ofracing cars with drivers in attendance,while the Cape Street Rod Club will have aselection of gleaming American-style hot-

rods being shown –off complete with brightmetallic paint and chrome.Perhaps one of the most unusual exhibitswill be that of the Heritage Movement witha display ofWorldWar army vehicles whichthe public can view from close-up.All the sports car clubs such as GSM, Sun-beam, Austin-Healey, Alfa-Romeo and FordMustang have been allocated standsamongst many classic sedans of yesteryear.The organisers have seen fit to lay on agood deal of entertainment too.Add to this a Miniature Car Show in theMinor Hall, a Funland providing all the pop-ular rides and a large selection of refresh-ment and arts and craft stalls and both momand junior should be satisfied.The Cape Classic Car Show takes up fourrugby fields and trophies are awarded forthe Best Car Club display, Best Stall, OldestMotorcycle and Vintage Car from 1904 to1939, etc. The big event is sponsored jointlybyCARmagazine and Coca-Colawith a totalof 800 vehicles making-up the exhibition.

’n Baie geslaagde eerste skole-mini-ligakompetisie van die WestelikeProvinsie-kushengelassosiasie het

onlangs afgeskop by Soverby tussen Laai-plek en Dwarskersbos.

Dié eerste kompetisie van die 2013/2014-seisoen is goed bygewoon en het inskry-wings van hengelaars van skole reg oor dieKaapse Metropool gelok.

Ná ’n koel en winderige begin, het die 48jong hengelaars hul hoeke ingegooi.

In die hengeltyd van drie uur het 188 vis-se gebyt. Vir menige hengelaar was dit ’n

eerste dag langs die water met ’n visstok indie hand. Die beamptes moes bontstaan toedaar meer as een hengelaar op ’n slag ’n visgebring het om gemeet te word. Al die visis vinnig gemeet en toe teruggegooi.

Groenewald (6) gevang.Kay-Lee Goch (junior meisies, Laerskool

Bellpark) het drie sandhaaie gevang, ter-wyl Sarah Behardien se gesig opgehelderhet toe sy ook die eerste van drie sandhaaie

aan wal trek. Aa-Isha Davids (LS Habibia)loop voor in die juniormeisies-afdelingmet10 punte (5 visse), gevolg deurKristenKrige(Monumentpark) en Ashlee Potgieter (Nor-man Henshilwood) met 8 punte elk.

Die broers, Luca en Rene van Heerden(o.12, Laerskool Welgemoed), het mekaarbehoorlik opgekeil en onderskeidelik 14 (28punte) en 11 (22 punte) visse gevang, terwylShivaan Naicker (o.12, Laerskool Milner-ton) met 15 visse (30 punte) die voortou indie o.12-afdeling geneem het.

TophengelaarDie tophengelaar vir die dag was Beor

van Reenen (o.8, Laerskool Brackenfell)met 19 visse (38 punte), terwyl Thinus Me-lim (Monumentpark) die grootste vis ge-vang het van 84 cm, met Beor in die tweede-plek met ’n vis van 83 cm. Die o.16 afdelingse voorloper is Lian Rossouw (Welgemoed)met 10 punte.

Die afdelings waarin gehengel word, isdie waar hulp verleen word met slegs in-gooie en aas in die o.8-, o.12- en o.16-afde-lings, asook die junior meisies.

In die afdelings vir meer gevorderde hen-gelaars, waar hulle self alles moet doen,word sake uitgespook in die o.12-, o.16- enmeisies-afdelings.Alle hengelaarsmoet selfdie vis vang en daarmee spook tot op diewal. Alle vis wat gevang word, tel 2 punte,behalwe as die vis swaarder as 2 kg weeg,waar die werklike gewig dan gebruik word.
