Phoenix residents are reeling withshock after the body of a woman wasdiscovered in a wheelie bin on Monday
morning.Shortly after 10:00 on Monday, a man who
did not identify himself called theTygerBur-ger and explained he had witnessed police
arrive to tend to the body.According to provincial police spokesper-
son Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut, policeare investigating the circumstances sur-rounding the murder after the body was dis-covered in a wheelie bin in Taurus Roadaround 09:00.
He says the cause of her death and the mo-tive for the murder are yet to be established.
“No one has been arrested as yet, and we
make an appeal to the public to come for-ward with information that can assist withour investigation,” Traut says.
Amid reports the woman’s body was muti-lated, Milnerton police spokesperson War-rant Officer Daphne O’Reilly says at thisstage, police can only confirm the womansuffered injuries to her face.
On Monday, a community meeting wascalled about policing in Phoenix. Resident
Ursula Marshall says the incident hassparked renewed concerns about visible po-licing.
“There are five vans of which two are sta-tioned in Dunoon. This leaves other commu-nities from Brooklyn to Milnerton with verylittle resources and although we know Mil-nerton is recruiting, we need somethingdone,” she explains.

CorrectionOn the front page caption of TygerBur-ger Milnerton last week, we incorrectlystated the spray painted message wasdone by residents in Summer Greens. It should have read: “A march is beingorganised to address various issues inSummer Greens. Pictured is a messageto the municipality, spray-painted by aresident venting his anger. The marchis aimed at uniting residents to tacklethe decay of the suburb”. TygerBurgerapologises for the error.
MyCiTi commuters are urged to ensurethey get their myconnect cards renewedif they expire at the end of October.According to a statement by the City of
Cape Town’s transport department, com-muters can get their newmyconnect cardfree of charge if they replace their expir-ing cards by Saturday 31 October. Al-though the myconnect card expires, thecard balance (the Mover Points and mon-ey) doesnot expire andwill be transferredto the new myconnect card immediately, provided that commuters arrange for anew card before the end of October.Approximately 19 000 activemyconnect
cards expire by the end of this month.Commuters should look at the date on thefront of the card – shown as “valid thru10/15” – to determine whether the cardshould be replaced.
Importantly, if a commuter neglects toreplace an expired card by the deadline,a new card will have to be purchased forR20 and the commuter will have to wait30 days for any balance on the card to betransferred to the new card. Cards expir-ing at later dateswill not be replaced now.“The City is aware that it may be an in-
convenience for commuters to replacetheir expired cards. It is, however, be-yond our control as the myconnect cardis a bank card and all bank cards have ex-piry dates. We are trying our best tomakeit as easy as possible for commuters to geta new card, and this iswhy the City is car-rying the cost of the new cards for now,’says Citymayoral committeemember fortransport, Brett Herron.V You can call the transport information centreon 0800 65 64 63 for more information.

Table View residents are preparing fora community walk through erf 1117 tofind out what is happening on this va-
cant land near West Beach. The plot, which is owned by the national
department of public works, has been a boneof contention as residents have often ques-tioned whether or not the amount of illegaldwellings are increasing.During a patrol with the Table View
Neighbourhood Watch (TVNW) severalmonths ago, TygerBurger established sever-al informal dwellings had sprung up amongthe thickvegetation. This excludes thedwell-ings in Happy Valley and Tokkie Town.During the patrol, a man who admitted to
smoking drugs in the bushes, said he oftenslept there after purchasing drugs in Park-lands. Meanwhile residents of Tokkie Townexpressed their fears about allegedgangstersmoving onto the land.Speaking at the monthly Table View Rate-
payers’ Association (TVRA) meeting, a resi-dent said he flew over the area for severaldays and could see various temporary dwell-ings being erected during the week.TVRA chairperson Leon Alhadeff ex-
plained that was why the association plansto host a community walk so residents couldget an idea of what was happening.“The purpose is to create further aware-
ness of what is happening on erf 1117 froma humane, a health and a safety perspective. It also allows the community the opportuni-ty to understand the concerns of those resi-dents who have raised red flags and to seefirst-hand what is really happening at grassroot levels. We have been told that there wasno expansion and that therewas only two ar-eas of habitation,” he says.Alhadeff explains the walk will give resi-
dents a chance to establish for themselveswhat is happening on this land.He further explains that the TVRA has
struggled to make contact with the relevant
officials at the department of public works.“We have managed to source direct con-
tact numbers and email addresses, allowingus to engage directly, andwe remain hopefulthat they will not only engage, but play anactive role in assisting to resolve the con-cerns of this community.”Alhadeff explains residents are concerned
about the longevity and sustainability oftheir investment in this area.“It is very clear to this community that
growth within erf 1117 is realised on a dailybasis.”He says while those occupying erf 1117 ha-
ve been identified as vulnerable, there is asignificant number of opportunists now resi-ding there by choice.During the meeting resident Stephen Twi-
ne made a heartfelt plea to residents to starttaking interest in the activities at erf 1117.Twine’s elderly parents were the victims
of a home invasion in Bermuda Crescent. Heexplains the dunes provide a perfect lookoutspot for criminals who can see directly intoresidents’ homes. These dunes on the vacantland have also been raised as a security riskby TVNW. A few days after the invasion hisfather, who was in shock after the incident, suffered a heart attack and passed away.“I have paid informants to find informati-
on and was given info that the culprits aremembers of the 26 Gang from Atlantis andare dropped off on a Sunday late afternoon. They build a temporary shelter in erf 1117,spend three days scoping the area out for li-kely low resistance targets, then break in onThursdays and Fridays,” he says.Twine further alleges these men are pic-
ked up late at night and they load the stolenitems onto bakkies. He believes the vacant property poses a se-
curity risk as access is not controlled.Alhadeff says the details for the communi-
ty walk will be released soon.V For more information, or if you would
like to attend the walk, email [email protected] and [email protected].

Marshall says residents agreed to posevarious questions on this topic during apublic meeting last night and wanted toknow if they could assist.During a Community Police Forum
(CPF) meeting in August, Milnerton po-lice station commander Brigadier Mari-us Stander highlighted the recruitmentfor the basic police development learningprogramme and explained the stationhad 40 vacancies. At the time he said the number of va-
cancies illustrated the shortages at thestation. He also issued a plea to residents to as-
sist with their recruitment drive.According to Marshall, the vacancies
at the station are a concern for many andresidents question whether those behindthis recent murder will be caught.“The problem is that someone killed
this woman, put her in a bin andwheeled
the bin to the field without being noticed. This incident was very traumatic for res-identswho have to cross this field as theygo towork. I heard about the body shortlyafter 07:00. We believe people walkingwith wheelie bins should be stopped andquestioned, especially since these bins gomissing every day,” she says.O’Reilly says police regularly stop and
search individuals seen with wheeliebins as it is often used to transport stolengoods.Commenting on the meeting, she ex-
plains, the station commander called apublic meeting on Tuesday to discuss therecently released crime statistics and toanswer questions.Meanwhile police have made a plea for
anyone with information on the murderto come forward. If you can assist call Crime Stop on

the Ysterplaat base opened its doors lastweek. The event has been running for 12 years
and on Friday Grade 10, 11 and 12 pupilsfrom various schools attended talks and ex-hibitions, and some were treated to a lei-sure flight around the peninsula.Commanding officer Colonel AJ De Cas-
tro says the purpose of the event was to ex-pose younger children to the Air Force andhopefully spark an interest in aviation.“We invited different flight clubs and
showed them the latest developments. Forthis year’s event we invited children fromdisadvantaged areas and gave them an in-sight into the Air Force. We combined theaviation team and also invited the Blood-hound supersonic car team to focus on vari-ous aspects,” he says. The Bloodhound project is a global engi-
neering adventure aimed at creating a car
that will attempt to break the world landspeed record to inspire the next generationto enjoy, explore and get involved in sci-ence, technology, engineering and mathe-matics.De Castro explains this was to give chil-

of recruitment for the Air Force, explainedhe was present to gather information onthose interested in applying.Among a long list of requirements,Mama
explains science and pure maths were es-sential subjects with geography an addedbonus. He explained applicants undergostrict medical and psychological examina-tions to ensure they are fit to be pilots. On the day, pupils were exposed to vari-

Van der Merwe created some400 films in the 1970s and ’80s, in-cluding Joe Bullet, one of thecountry’s first all-black castfilms.
His movies launched the ca-reers of many African actors andnurtured a generation of Africanfilm technicians and productionhands. The majority of his filmswere distributed by means of aninformal rural distribution net-work, reaching audiences esti-mated at well over hundreds ofthousands.
In 1973 the South African filmJoe Bullet was banned by theapartheid government after itssecond screening at the Eyethucinema in Soweto. Though theban was later lifted, producersnever pursued another releaseuntil 2013.
The film premiered at the 2014 DurbanInternational Film Festival. It also fea-
tured at the To Save and Project film pres-ervation festival in New York in Novem-
ber last year before beingscreenedat theCarthage interna-tional film festival in Tunisia, and the 65th Berlinale film festi-val in February 2015.
Established in 2005, AMAAaims to facilitate the develop-ment and relevance of Africanfilm and cinema by providing arewards and recognition plat-form for filmmakers on the conti-nent.
African film makers workhard with very little and have, not through serendipity butthrough sheer audacity, man-aged to build the third largestfilm industry in the world, andare poised to take poll position, beating America and India.
“I’ve had a good inning as afilmmaker and it’s probably timeto pack away the cameras andlights, but I want to make one lastfilm with an African producer,”Van der Merwe said on receivinghis award.
This will hopefully happen inthe near future.
Forty of Van der Merwe’s filmsare being restored by GravelRoad Studios and are being re-leased under Gravel Road’s Ret-
ro Afrika Bioscope label.V Visit www.retroafrika.com for more.

Award-winning local filmmaker Des-mondDenton aims to showcase SouthAfrican talent to the world with the
upcoming film Jerome.Denton, who boasts a mantelpiece lined
with local and international film awards, recently signed on as director for this film, which earlier this year started off as an up-liftment project for the gang-ridden commu-nity of Scottsdene in Kraaifontein.
As part of Imagenheart production com-pany, it is his vision to also take this featurewhich he describes as “an incredible storyof hope” to various international festivals.
“Jerome has the potential to inspire com-munities. My vision for this film trulystems from my passion to uplift, entertainand create films that are of high quality in-ternationally,” he said in a recent interviewwith TygerBurger.
Denton aims to use the film as a tool ofchange and says they are working with so-cial workers and community leaders for asimilar approach to the film Lenteblom.”
This film, which deals with the virgincure myth, was screened at thousands offarms in South Africa, and according toDenton had been very successfully imple-mented with HIV/Aids strategies and dis-cussions. Similarly, Jerome, that plays offin the midst of a troubled environment rifewith gangsterism and drugs, will bescreened at high schools across especiallythe Western Cape. The project will be completed in two sta-
ges – firstly a short film, then the feature.“The two stories however are sequential
– so it follows on each other. A very excitingangle to the Jerome project is that we areelevating the story with the elements of amusical. Various gifted dancers and musi-cians are already involved, and it resultedin the project doing a stage show later thisyear in preparation to the film,” he says.
Denton met the cast in Kraaifontein last
week. “The purpose of the meeting was toinclude them in the project. It is one thingto merely use people to make a film; it issomething different when they are part ofit, care about it and truly believe in it. Weare very excited to have award winningfilmmakers, community leaders as well asan acclaimed and upcoming cast involved. It is the perfect mix for a good film with im-pact,” he says.“It was very exciting hearing their very
personal stories – stories of pain and hope.It was incredible to see how real the storyof Jerome was by hearing these accounts ofpeople whose lives have been affected andin some cases destroyed by elements suchas tik and gangsterism, and exploring whatcan we do with this film to offer healthy al-ternative options for the youth. The film isa great opportunity for this.”
Filming is set to start early next year.“We furthermore are creating a book that
includes the personal stories, poems andscript of Jerome as part of the funding.”
In recent years Imagenheart was in-volved with big feature films such asMooi-rivier with Cobus van den Berg, and actorssuch as Mos Def (Italian Job) and variouscelebrities including chef Jamie Oliver,Desmond Tutu and PJ Powers. The Imagenheart team has also worked
on international films and series such asResident Evil and Black Sails.“But what excites me most is seeing peo-
ple on international level respond to ourfilms. We have won various internationalawards with the film Anderkant die stilte, which included best directed, best written, best actors and best produced,” he says.“The aim of this project is definitely to
first create an engaging heartfelt entertain-ing film, which – through the process – de-velops talent.”V Denton will be doing further castings for the theatre production as well as film and invites dancers, actors, creatives and marketing students to get intouch with the production team on the Facebookpage JEROME

oorweldigend.

I read the front page article(“March for change”, TB 7October) and strongly disagreewith the caption and thepicture. That wall was notspray painted by angry resi-dents in protest against theCity of Cape Town. The truthis that Vincent Alexanderspray painted the wall and theresidents reported it to lawenforcement. He was finedR1 500 and was instructed toremove the graffiti, which hedid, and he has to appear incourt for his illegal actions on2 February.Your article has negative

SLICE OF LIFE
Please, turnoff yourcellphoneOur lives have become intrinsicallylinked with technology. Not feeling theweight of a cellphone in your pocketleaves you feeling vulnerable, naked. While we’re more connected than ever
before, we’ve forgotten how to trulyconnect with those around us. How oftendo you sit around a table with friends, with at least one person (if not all ofthem) glued to their phones? When did we forget our manners?
When did it become socially acceptable toignore your dinner company to reply to atext message or to answer emails whilein a meeting? And surely switching your phone off
during an event, concert, movie, weddingor church service should be a basiccourtesy. Yet we regularly find theromantic love scene in a movie or eventhe vows of a bride and groom interrupt-ed by the chirping of a phone. What does it say about us as a society
that money has to be spent on advertis-ing to ensure cellphones are turned offbefore a movie and priests have to startsermons by asking that cellphones beswitched off?It speaks to a lack of respect for others
that we can’t even manage simplecellphone etiquette. It’s really simple: ifyou wouldn’t talk during the event, others shouldn’t hear your cellphone. It’s a courtesy that we should expend
without thinking, as simple as sayingplease or thank you.So please turn off your cellphone.
Thank you.

“To be part of a 75th anniversary isalways special, but to be part of amemorial event of that period in
time is really special.”So says Barrie Jones, treasurer and chor-ister of the Cape Welsh Choir. The all-malegroup will be presenting a very special con-cert to commemorate the 75th anniversaryof the Battle of Britain on Wednesday 28 Oc-tober.The choir has been presenting an annualcommemorative concert at the Simon’sTown Naval Base Church for the last 15years and has a long standing relationshipwith the organisers, the RAF Association ofSouth Africa. With the 75th anniversary being “quite amilestone”, this year’s concert will be some-thing very special.“For us it’s a big departure,” Barrie says, explaining that they would normally go onstage and sing in theWelshmale voice choirstyle. This time round, the Cape Welsh Choirhas put a full production or showcase togeth-er in the spirit of reflecting the “era and cir-cumstances” of the period around WorldWar Two.The concert takes place against the back-drop of a specially-built set that recreates atypical bomb shelter in the London Under-groundwith the choir dressed in clothes typ-ical of the era.“It sounds dramatic maybe, but they werehard times, so there are no pink shirts forexample. It’s all very staid, working-classstuff.”They’ll be singing medleys of a selectionof well-known songs from the time. “All ofthose songswere used to embolden that spir-it of resistance.” Barrie explains that musicwas used inWorldWarTwo to unifyBritain.
Many of the songs were popularised by “theforce’s sweetheart”, Vera Lynn.SouthAfrican soloist Yvette Elliott will bebringing her songs back to life, completewith period costumes. For a bit of variation, they’ll be joined by the “rousing” Cape FieldArtillery Pipes and Drums as well as guestsfrom the UK: the RAF Salon Orchestra withtheir big band sound and theQueen’s ColourSquadron with their precision marchingdisplay. All of this will be neatly threaded togetherwith a “well-constructed” narrative put to-gether by Reverend Ralph Thornley, a keenamateur historian. “He’s got a wealth of in-formation and knowledge.”Thornley’s narrative will tell the story ofthe four months of the Battle of Britain, in-
terspersed with audio visual clips to helprecreate the atmosphere around the war.“I think it’s going to be a very special occa-sion,” says Barrie, adding: “It’s going to bea once in a lifetime opportunity.”Made up of members from all over theCape Peninsula, the Cape Welsh Choir haspresented more than 800 concerts in its 33year existence. “So, we’ve got a few mile-stones of our own.”The choir’s primary focus is on fund-rais-ing for third parties and so far they’ve beenable tohelpotherorganisations raise anesti-mated R3 million.Three members – Alan Thompson fromPinelands, Ian Jones from Table View andFreddieAhern fromBrackenfell – have beenwith the choir since the very beginning.
While the average age of the choir mem-bers is 50 plus, they are always looking fornew and younger members and use everyconcert as a recruitment opportunity.Anybody interested in joining the choircan contact chairman Graham Tennison on021 696 1716 or 073 463 1028.The concert on Wednesday 28 Octobertakes place at the Claremont Civic Centrewith two performances at 15:00 and 19:30.Tickets cost R150 or R120 for the matineefrom Computicket and proceeds will go to-wards the RAF (SA) Benevolent Fund.V For more information about the Cape Welsh Choir, visit their website at capewelshchoir.co.za or findthem on Facebook. GREAT JAMA OBBOAND MAMA ZAITUNTraditional Healer
Luckily I came across AmaObbo through a friend.
He helped me and showedme my enemies through amirror. He did miracles inmy life. He told me all my
problems without mementioning anything tohim. He showed me thepeople who worked hardto see me suffering someof which were my friends
and relatives. Heperformed a special
prayer, washed away mybad luck and cleansed myhome. Gave me a love
potion with a ring for myfinancial problems in lessthan 5 days, my husbandcame back to me and wasalways by my side and myenemies confessed andasked forgiveness.Call Ama or Mama

Century City Athletic Club runnerTanya Posthumus-Fox won the Her-manus Whale Festival 21km race in
a time of 1:29:40.What makes this even more special is
that it was the first sub-90 minutes Tanyahas achieved in a 21km race.
Tanya, who came second in the samerace last year, says she felt more relaxedand calm than ever during a race.
Although it was only a week apart, Tan-ya competed in the Gun Run 21km on Sat-urday, the day after her 35th birthday.
“I kept the celebrations at bay untilafter the race!” she quipped, adding thatnormally she would not race again sosoon. She said her legs were stiff and sore, mostly because of all the hills in the Her-
manus race, but she will be visiting herphysiotherapist again this week to helprepair her body.
“However, it is now two years since Idid the Gun Run, and I really have a boneto pick with this particular race, as thelast time I did it I was forced to literallywalk the last 5km due to injury.”
She did the Gun Run in a time of 01:27:14making her the sixth out of 2 424 femalerunners to cross the line. She added thatthere are a couple of other track events(800m, 1500m and 5000m) on the horizon,as well as some shorter road races (10-15km).
“However, my next 21km road race aft-er Saturday is the HFPA half marathonin November in Bloubergstrand.”
