provinsiale hospitaal se trauma-eenheid, enbeland omstreeks 23:00 daar,” het sy gesê.

Opname“ ’n Dr. Vlok vanNetcare het deurgebel na

Eersterivier-hospitaal. Vlok het toe reedsklaar gereël vir Ilana se opname en vir ons’n brief gegee. Toe ons daar kom, toe gee onsdie brief. Hulle het ons geïgnoreer soos ’nstopstaat,” het Sharon haar weergawe vangebeure gegee.

“Daar is ons sleg behandel,” het Sharonbeweer. “Ek kan nie sê soos honde nie, wantbaie mense behandel hul troeteldiere metmeer respek. Géén behulpsaamheid nie,geenvriendelikheidnie, onswordnet aange-sê om te wag.

“Drie ure later gaanhoor ekwat die opont-houd is, want my suster krul van die pyn!Ek word gevra om ons beurt af te wag. Nánóg twee ure gaan vra ek weer, waar ek toemeegedeel word daar is net twee dokters endat hulle nou in sale besig is,” het Sharonverontwaardig vertel.

Sharon sê sy wou toe weet hoekom nie-mand hulle kom inlig het oor dié stand vansake nie, maar “weer ’n onbetrokke, on-vriendelike kyk, en ’n antwoord dat ekmoetwág”, sê sy.

“Ek besluit toe dat ek liewer my susterdaar gaan wegneem, want klaarblyklik be-sef níémand haar blindedermkan bars en sykan doodgaan nie.”

Dit help jou as ouerom die situasies beter te bestuur en geeook aan jou kind ’n boodskap sy ouershet die beheerkontroles stewig in hulhande.

Vestig ’n roetine en struktuur in diehuishouding wat konstant en stabiel endeurlopend is. Stel jou reëls in plek.Hoe minder reëls, hoe beter. Maarhierdie reëls is vas soos ’n ysterpen inbeton gegiet. Die kind leer hy kan niehierdie reëls buig nie.

Te veel reëls maak ditegter net te moelik en teonhanteerbaar vir dieouer. ’n Paar vaste reëlsmoet dus wel in plekwees.

Een so ’n reël kanbyvoorbeeld wees elkekind in hierdie huishou-ding is gehoorsaam aanpa en ma.

Dit sal aspekte insluit soos ouerlei-ding, gesinsleiding en terapie vir diekind. In terapie sal die kind onder meerleer van positiewe sosiale interaksies,hoe om konflik en woede te bestuur,hoe om te kommunikeer en sy behoeftesen gevoelens uit te spreek, en hoe omfrustrasies en probleme te hanteer.

As gevolg van beperkte ruimte kandie teenkantingsteuring nie hier volle-dig bespreek word nie.

Op Woensdag 23 Oktober het die HoërskoolBellville geskiedenis gemaak met die ope-ning van sy mini-astrobaan.

Dit was ’n droom van die beheerliggaamom hierdie astro-hokkieveld die lig te laatsien.

Dit was ’n uitsonderlike dag van groothistoriese waarde. Dit is die eerste keer indie geskiedenis dat die beheerliggaam diestap geneem het om ’n lening aan te gaanom ’n projek van hierdie omvang te voltooi.

Met die astro se opening het die skool ver-der geskiedenis gemaak deurdat die Hoër-skool Bellville se langslewende leerders,Margaretha Lochner en Andries du Plessis,die astro-baan geopen het.

Lochner was tot 1940 ’n leerder aan dieHoërskool Bellville. Sy was self ’n hokkie-speler. Op 11 Oktober 2013 het sy 90 jaar oudgeword.

Hierdie oudleerder is nog lus vir die leween sy sê dat sy ten minste drie maal ’n weektot 23:00 en self tot 0:00 saans brug en canas-ta saam met haar vriende speel.

Du Plessis was een van die eerste leerderswat in 1941 aan die Hoërskool Bellville ge-matrikuleer het. Hy, sy oorlede vrou, huldogter en kleinseun (dus drie geslagte), wasalmal leerders aan die Hoërskool Bellville.Hy het duidelik aangedui dat hy nie 89 jaarvoel nie. Hy doen nog elke oggend sy oefe-ninge in die gimnasium.

A Kuils River couple did their bit to encour-age parents of little ones with spina bifidaon World Spina Bifida Day – after havinglived with the condition themselves.

Husband and wife Lamees and ShafiekJaftha took part in the Red Cross War Memo-rial Children’s Hospital’s awareness eventon 23 October.

“Lamees (38) and several other former spi-na bifida patients of the hospital encouragedthe parents of young children with the dis-ease,” said Lauren O’Connor-May, principalcommunications officer at the hospital.

The former patients had a special meetand greet session with the little ones’ par-ents, explaining, encouraging and motivat-ing them how to better live with this birthdefect.

“Spina bifida is Latin for ‘split spine’. Itis a birth defect caused by the incompleteclosing of the embryonic neural tube. Some

vertebrae overlying the spinal cord are notfully formed and remain unfused and open,”Lauren explained.

“Spina bifida can be surgically closed af-ter birth, but this does not restore normalfunction to that part of the spinal cord,” shesaid. The condition is one of the most com-mon birth defects, with a worldwide inci-dence of about 1 in every 1 000 births.

“There is neither a single cause of spinabifida nor any known way to prevent it en-tirely. However, dietary supplementationwith folic acid has been shown to be helpfulin reducing the incidence of spina bifida by75 % in mothers who had prior spina bifidabirths,” she said.

Lauren noted that women wishing to con-ceive, and those in their first trimester, areadvised to take daily folic acid supplements.

She said the guests enjoyed and appreciat-ed the information exchange session.

If one drives past the firstcamera at 80km/h and thenaccelerates to 250kmh toapprox... 500m before the nextcamera and then stop, havelunch, coffee and have a shortrest and then proceed towardsthe next one you are a goodmotorist as the average speedon the measured distance willgive you a speed of maybe20km/h average. You mighthave obstructed other traffic ifyou were travelling all thetime but at least you are notspeeding.

These cameras are a waste ofmoney and if it is a highcollision frequency locationthan physical law enforcementshould be done.

’n Werksessie in Wesbank op 30 Septemberhet vrugte afgewerp deur vroue te bemagtigmet inligting.

Dié inligtingsessie, wat by Wesbank semultidoelsentrum gehou is, het sowat 48vroue en drie mans gelok, het Dawn Roode,die motiveringspreker en fasiliteerder vandie geleentheid, gesê.

Dawnhet die gehoor ingelig oor temas soos“Waarin is ek goed?”, hoe om selfvertroue tebou en hoe om jouself met positiewe woordeaan te spoor. Dit is gevolg deur ’n groepbe-spreking.

ma geleer het.”Dawn sê die werksessie was ’n reusesuk-

ses.“Wat so opvallend was, is dat elke persoon

Sy sê betrokkenes het gesê hulle sien uitna die opvolgwerksessie waar hulle terug-voering sal gee oor hoe hulle die inligting ge-deel het met ander in die gemeenskap.

“Die terugvoering was goed en baie het ge-voel meer mense moet die werksessies by-woon en dit moet in die ander dele van Wes-bank ook aangebied word.

“Ek het al die pad gesukkelmet my ID. Ek en iemand an-ders het dieselfde ID-nommergehad. Ek het al van 2003 af sógesukkel, en in November 2012is dit eers reggestel.

“Ek het nie ’n inkomste ommy kinders se geboorte te gaanopgee nie. Dis R75 wat betaalmoet word vir elk,” sê sy.

Haar kinders se ouderdommewissel van tien (skoolgaande),sewe, vyf, drie tot by die babavan elf maande.

Dan is daarAbigail (8).Tyger-Burger het haar in die middelvan die dag op straat aangetref.Haar ma werk heeldag en Abi-gail sit dan buite totdat diésaans terugkeer.

“My broer, ‘Dollas’ werk ook.Hy kom in die middae, dan komgee hy vir my kos. As hy klaargeëet het, sluit hy. Dan loop hyweer,” vertel sy.

Sy kan haar naam skryf. “Myma het my geleer.” Abigail sê sysit op hul muur, of speel bymaatjies wat nog nie skoolgaannie, of wag tot die skoolgaandekinders uit die skool kom.

Met ons besoek, omtrent15:00, het sy die heeldag nogniks geëet nie, omdat sy virhaar broer gewag het.

Nita Smit (23) se dogter is ookagt, en sy is ook nie laasjaarskool toe nie. Nita sê dis omdatsy ook sukkel om haar ID in diehande te kry. Haar dogter hetook nog nie ’n geboortesertifi-kaat nie, sê Nita, want sy konnog nie daarby uitkom om haarID te gaan afhaal nie.

“My kind dwaal maar hierrond en speel met die kleintjies.Sy kan nog nie haar naam skryfnie,” sê Nita. Joseph Adonis seseun is 11 en was nog nooit in’n skool nie. Sy probleem issoortgelyk aan Irene en Nitas’n: problememet die kinders segeboortesertifikate. “My kin-

ders se ma het hul geboortepa-piere kom haal. Sy woon inDelft. Ek weet nie of die rege-ring weet van hulle bestaan, ofnie. Ek verneem sy verdien Sas-sa-geld vir hulle, maar sy komnooit om die jongste kind seskoolgoed te kom uitsorteernie,” sê hy. Joseph se oudste is18, en hy het darem al die skool-banke gesien, sê hy.

Hy en sy vrou is wettig ge-troud, maar sy stel glad nie inhul kinders belang nie, sê hy.

“My grootste wens is net datdié kind (11-jarige) geleerdheidkan kry. Ek makeer sy papiere,en sy ma sê sy sal sy skoolsakekom regmaak, maar sy stel gladnie belang nie. Die welsyn is aloplossing,” sê Joseph. “Ek wilnie hê hy moet tronk toe gaanen dáár gaan leer nie.”

Ricardo le Roux, ’n gemeen-skapsleier van Wesbank, is ewebesorg oor dié stand van sake.

“Skole benodig wel identifi-kasiedokumentewanneer vir ’nkindby ’n skool aansoek gedoenword. Maar in gevalle waar ou-ers nie hul IDkon bekomnie, endie kinders om dié rede nie in’n skool kon kom nie, moet dieouer die relevante distrikskan-toor kontak vir bystand.

“Die departement is verpligom alle kinders van skoolgaan-de ouderdom in ’n skool teplaas.”

A television station’s crew hit Eerste Riverwith some serious excitement last Saturdaywhen their road show auditioned youthsfrom the area.

The Cape Town TV Road Show saw 50 dif-ferent acts perform at the Eerste River HighSchool hall as a curtain raiser for their end-of-year regional Diamonds in the Ruff talentsearch.

“A strong crowdwas entertained by act af-ter act with performers like Goldilocks andRap Addicts getting the crowd begging formore,” said Aubrey Botha, Kuils River po-lice cluster CPF board chairperson and oneof the organisers of the event.

He said the 50 plus contestants stood wait-ing in eager anticipation for their momentin the spotlight, and of course a chance atgreat cash prizes at the function in Decem-ber.

“The focus of the road show was on talentand putting the Eerste River community onthe map,” Aubrey said.

The event was initiated by Gordon Tho-mas of Ward 16, and George Coerecius fromthe Eerste River Blue Downs RatepayersResidents’ Association. George gave anoverviewof thehistory andchallenges in thearea, Aubrey said. Toe dit goed afloop, het ek na diehuiswinkels gegaan en hulle het broodgeskenk. Toe het ek ook die kerk genader.Ons wil hulle leer van Jesus – al die mooidinge van Jesus,” sê sy.

“Ons gesels ookmet hulle oor loopbaneen waar sien hulle hulself oor tien jaar,”sê sy. En dis toe hoe die Good News Clubgestig is, sê sy, en sedertdien het die eer-ste 13 gegroei tot waar hulle deesdae na-der aan 48 kinders het wat kom inloer –vir ietsie te ete, én ietsie leersaam, sê sy.

A community organisation in Kuils Riversays parents are never too old, and it’s nev-er too late for them to learn new parentingskills.

For this reason Badisa recently provedthis mantra when they invited parentsfrom the Sarepta and Kalkfontein commu-nity to help them become better educatedin the needs of their children, and the par-ents’ responsibilities to their youngsters.

“This project is targeted at young, unedu-cated single or married parents, to empow-er them on how to successfully raise ahealthy and disciplined child,” said JevonBarry, a community developer at Badisa.

Badisa works according to models andguidelines as set out by the Department ofSocial Development, he says. The skillsthey wished to impart on the young par-ents, were to know the relevant rights andresponsibilities regarding the following:

Vthe rights of school children;Vwhy children should be at school;Vwhy children in the class need to listen;Vwhy children should respect the teach-

er;Vwhy children shouldn’t be absent from

school;Vtheir children’s needs at school.The were also informed about basic food

and nutritional requirements of children.This included a better understanding of thedifferent food groups and different nutri-ents needed for different age groups, appro-priate to their child’s developmental phas-es, as well as understanding best hygienepractices and the safety of their children.

During the Play and Creativity sessionparents were taught to understand why itis important for a child to play and how tomake easy and cheap but durable toys fortheir kids.

“We focused on the rights of the child andthe right to education and good health-care,” Jevon said.

They had 25 parents from the two farmsand Badisa hopes the outcome will be par-ents who will implement their new knowl-edge positively and be able to realisticallyassess and meet their children’s basicneeds and rights.

“The evening was very successful,” Jev-on said. Parents were treated to sponsoredmagazines and food.

“Herleef is een van daaiprojekte wat na my toe ge-kom het,” verduidelik hy.

“Ek het altyd geweier(om ’n Christelike albumop te neem), omdat as jy so’n opname maak, word dit mos besigheid,”sê hy verder.

“In ’n geestelike wêreld voel ek moet daar’n vrye vloei van inligting in jou uitsettewees, want jy hoef dit nie te kontroleer nie,want die hart is mos reg.”

Chris het met Christian Art Media gewerktoe hy Droomland vrygestel het, wat hysaam met die Drakensbergse seunskoor op-geneem het.

Chris sê hy dink Christian Art Media hetdie versoek reg bewoord en hulle het homreg benader toe hulle verlede jaar navraagoor ’n geestelike album gedoen het. Boonophet hy gevoel dit is die regte tyd. “En toe geeek toe,” sê hy.

Die 12 liedjies op Herleef is geïnspireerdeur die teks van ou psalms en gesange enChris sê dit was ’n baie vinnige proses omdie teks te kies wat hy gebruik het.

“Ek het dieselfde proses gebruik as wat ekingespan het met die toonsetting van IngridJonker se werk,” sê Chris. Hy verduidelik:“Dis letterlik omdieboekoop te slaan, te kykna die gedig of na die teks, en as dit onmidde-lik tot jou spreek, dan weet jy dis reg.”

“Dan vroetel jy rond op die kitaar tot jy’n akkoord kry en as jy daai akkoord kry,

wat onmiddelik resoneermet die lied, dan gaan jyvoort,” sê hy.

Chris sê hy het omtrent90% van sy keuses gemaakdaar waar hy die psalm- engesange-boek oopgeslaanhet. “Ek het omtrent net 15keer die boek oopgemaak,want ek het 12 van hulle ge-toonset,” spot Chris.

Dit was belangrik virChris dat die opname vanHerleef nie te klinies is nie.Hy sêmetnuwedigitale op-

names is daar die ruimte om mikro-verande-rings te maak aan die musiek wat opgeneemis. Maar, sê Chris: “Dit het vir my begin voelof ons musiek doodsmoor om ’n volmaaktegeheelbeeld te vorm. Die siel daarvan gaanheeltemal verlore,” sê hy.

Chris sê: “Ek wou hê dat die album net uitdie bus moet val – net soos hy is, vratjies enal.Maardanhelp dit as jy ouenshetwatweetwat hulle doen,” voeg hy by. Chris praat vanAlbert Frost (kitaar), Schalk Joubert (bas)en Riaan van Rensburg (tromme), wat saammet hom aanHerleef gewerk het en in ’n ma-te bygedra het tot die groter gevoel van rockop die album.

Sunday 3 November sees the CapeMulti CarClub once again hosting their popular CapeClassic Car Show at the Northerns-Good-woodRugbyFields corner ofDeGrendal andMcIntyre Streets, Parow, just off the N1.The 2013 event promises to continue thetradition of offering family entertainment atan affordable price with no fewer than 34Classic Car and Motorcycle Clubs partici-pating of which the Crankhandle Club shallhave the largest display with 80 vehicles.Within this display will be the oldest carat the show, a 1901 Mercedes-Benz, sur-rounded by a selection of English cars of abygone era such as Austin, Morris, Bentleyand Rolls-Royce with the odd Armstrong-Siddeley in between.For speed enthusiasts the Western Prov-ince Motor Club will have a good turnout ofracing cars with drivers in attendance,while the Cape Street Rod Club will have aselection of gleaming American-style hot-

rods being shown –off complete with brightmetallic paint and chrome.Perhaps one of the most unusual exhibitswill be that of the Heritage Movement witha display ofWorldWar army vehicles whichthe public can view from close-up.All the sports car clubs such as GSM, Sun-beam, Austin-Healey, Alfa-Romeo and FordMustang have been allocated standsamongst many classic sedans of yesteryear.The organisers have seen fit to lay on agood deal of entertainment too.Add to this a Miniature Car Show in theMinor Hall, a Funland providing all the pop-ular rides and a large selection of refresh-ment and arts and craft stalls and both momand junior should be satisfied.The Cape Classic Car Show takes up fourrugby fields and trophies are awarded forthe Best Car Club display, Best Stall, OldestMotorcycle and Vintage Car from 1904 to1939, etc. The big event is sponsored jointlybyCARmagazine and Coca-Colawith a totalof 800 vehicles making-up the exhibition.

’n Baie geslaagde eerste skole-minili–gakompetisie van die Westelike Pro-vinsie-kushengelassosiasie het on-

langs afgeskop by Soverby tussen Laaipleken Dwarskersbos.Dié eerste kompetisie van die 2013/2014-

seisoen is goed bygewoon en het inskry-wings van hengelaars van skole reg oor dieKaapse Metropool gelok.Ná ’n koel en winderige begin, het die 48

jong hengelaars hul hoeke ingegooi.In die hengeltyd van drie ure het 188 visse

gebyt. Vir menige hengelaar was dit ’n eer-

ste dag langs die water met ’n visstok in diehand. Die beamptesmoes bontstaan toe daarmeer as een hengelaar op ’n slag ’n vis ge-bring het om gemeet te word. Al die vis isvinnig gemeet en toe teruggegooi.
