    FACE to FACE

    DESIRE RORKE

Kelly Baloyi, the matric student at the cen-

tre of the new FNB 2012 You Can Help, ad-

vertising campaign, might become a politi-

    cian herself one day.

So said her principal David Jantjies, at

Monument Park High School in Kraaifon-

tein, where she is currently head girl in ad-

dition to being on the junior council of the

    City of Cape Town.

Kelly is a fantastic bundle of energy. She

is a charismatic leader and makes things

happen. Everything she touches becomes a

success and from the outset she has always

wanted to study political sciences and law,

    Jantjies told TygerBurger last week.

In this advertisement which caused a

political uproar over the last two weeks

Kelly, although small of frame, shares her

hopes for South Africa in a powerful voice.

In the now controversial, but yet im-

    passioned speech, which Jantjies assured

us was written by Kelly herself, she talks

about the brave young people of Naledi

High School, who in 1976 took their first

steps to freedom, when protesting for

    equal education.

She then continues to say that, We are

not here today to talk about revolution, but

belief and what belief can do... There will

be a day...where the difficulties we see be-

fore us, the greed, mistrust and anger, will

    be behind us.

Therewill be a day that the violence and

indifference to it, will be a thing of the

past...a daywhenwe stop blaming each oth-

er and start helping each other... All the

great things we have done, we have done

together... And then she ends with ...and

that day should be today. Nkosi Sikelele iA-

    frica.

    The campaign was recorded Thursday

evening a fortnight ago on location at Nale-

di High School and broadcasted live on all

    channels including DStv.

According to Jantjies, the producers of

    this advertisement approached the school

as one of 1 600 others, and invited learners

to submit their speeches on the topic of

what our youth hopes for the future.

Kellys speech was one of 13 000 others

andwas finally chosenas the one to beused.

In a YouTube clip one of the producers of

the campaign describes Kelly and the im-

    pact she had on them.

She is incredibly charismatic and pow-

erful. We did not choose Kelly, she kinda

    chose us, he said.

Since then the ANC has unleashed a

scathing attack, accusing FNB of intention-

    ally targeting them.

They branded the campaign as a treach-

    erous attack, and a commercialmasquer-

    adingasyouthviews,whereasFNB insists

that the campaign was misinterpreted by

    the ANC.

The ANC added in a statement last week

that the bank should not use children to

make political statements in a manner dis-

respectful to elders that disregarded sacri-

fices made in the 18 years of democratic

government and that it was evident from

the advert that the views presented had

    been engineered

    and doctored.

    This furore con-

    tinued last week

    when ANC big-

    wigs and the exec-

    utive of FNB met

    at Luthuli House

    on Friday, after

    which the bank

    apologised to the

    ANC.

    To this, West-

    ern Cape premier

    Helen Zille tweet-

    ed on Saturday:

Saying that FNB caved in order to protect

the kids in the advert is a more devastating

statement on the ANC govt than anything

    the advert said.

    Meanwhile, Kelly continues her matric

year unabated and filled with enthusiasm,

    says Principal Jantjies.

As she returned from the filming of the

ad in Johannesburg on the Thursday night,

she immediately started getting ready to be

themaster of ceremonies at theGrade 8wel-

coming night, which took place at the

school the very next day, he said.

Jantjies describes her as a dynamic

learner who excels in culture, drama, liter-

ature, singing, dancing and academics in

addition to being a local youth leader.

She has always spoken out about drug

abuse and violence against women and

even organised a protestmarch last Decem-

    ber, he adds.

Shemakes people feel at ease andmakes

    them laugh.

    Since the controversy surrounding the

campaign started Kelly has been in school

every day, continuing hermatric year with

    ardour as she always has.

She has been barred by FNB to grant in-

    terviews.

    Kelly a future president?

Kelly Baloyi on set when the advertisement was shot.

Seven neat, new homes handed to owners

    TANDYLEE MARINUS

On 24 January, residents of Happy Valley

in Blackheath, saw an end to their struggle

for housing, when seven families were

handed over their keys to brand new hous-

    es.

There have been previous struggles and

delays regarding the construction and de-

velopment of the homes, because of a con-

    tract award dispute.

Ward councillor for the HappyValley ar-

ea and part of the housing committee, Bert

van Dalen said the construction of the

houses, which has since seen 70 families

    move induringNovember 2012,will see the

completion of 1 452 houses by the end of

    next year.

Present at the hand over ceremony was

the executive mayor of Cape Town, Patri-

cia de Lille, along with representatives

    from the construction company, communi-

    ty members, mayoral committee members

    and ward councillors.

The benefit of owning a home aremulti-

faceted. It restores individual dignity. It

provides a stable home for a family, she

    said.

    This formedpart of theR185millionHap-

py Valley Housing project, which has pre-

viously been home to 1 500 informal struc-

    tures.

The city aimed to establish a partnership

through an innovative way of providing

    housing needs to various residents.

The Happy Valley Housing Project is a

good example of the successful implemen-

tation of the upgrading of Informal Settle-

ments Programme, which permits the con-

version of an informal area into a formal

    one, said De Lille.

    Beneficiaries for thenewhouseswere se-

lected according to criteria including: a

monthly salary of less than R3 500 per

month, have not owned a house before and

were on the waiting list at the city council.

Van Dalen agreed that the project was

indeed a successful one and that thehouses

are in good condition. The residents are

smiling and are very thankful for the hous-

    es, said Van Dalen.

    Someresidentswaited as longas 26 years

    on the waiting list.

This is an important illustration of our

common goal to build sustainable commu-

    nities, De Lille concluded.

    The Kraaifontein Waste Management Fa-

cility won an award for outstanding civil

engineering achievements of 2011/12 at the

recent South African Institution of Civil

    Engineering Awards.

    TheKraaifonteinWasteManagement Fa-

cility was one of three Cape Town-based

    projects to receive an award.

The R230 million facility is the first large

scale green fields refuse transfer station

in South Africa that is integrated with a

    mechanised material recovery facility, re-

    ceiving co-mingled recyclables, separated

    and collected at the source.

The key focus of the facility is to make

    waste management more sustainable by

providing a service that meets the new Na-

    tional Waste Regulations, reduces waste

    transportation costs, provides meaningful

    employment opportunities, diverts waste

from landfills and enhances the beneficia-

    tion of waste.

The facilitys success is primarily due to

the excellent teamwork and foresight of the

    citys Solid Waste Management depart-

ment, and thehighquality of civil engineer-

ing design and service provided by the con-

    tractors.

It is important to recognise hard work,

and show our appreciation for a team that

has done its utmost to provide a service

that is not only beneficial for all, but also

showcases an attempt to mitigate the ef-

fects of waste on our environment.

They have made us all proud with this

well deserved award, said the executive

mayor for the City of Cape Town, Patricia

    de Lille.

    Cease fire and

    start listening

    to real needs

Cease fire! one wants to scream. Can

everyone just put their guns, sticks,

stones, posters, and yes, pens down, shut

up and listen to each other? Can we stop

    destroying our surroundings and saddest

    of all, each other?

    Everywhere everyone is yelling for

this, demanding that. Youll swear every

single soul is being denied even the most

basic of rights. Who doesnt want more

money, a better house, better services,

    better education and more opportunities?

This need is insatiable the more you

have, the more you want especially

    political power.

In a democracy nobody gets what they

want. Everything is a compromise. We

strive towards being sort-of satisfied. To

get to this point, we should listen. Not

just shut up to reload the word gun, but

put you in the other partys shoes the

    real party understand their concerns

and their real needs, and stop focusing

on your own screwed up urge to get to

    the top.

What is prevalent everywhere, is people

trying to wipe each other out, whether by

weapons or words. Nobody is listening.

Least of all is anyone listening to the real

victims of all these egoistic wars and

struggles for power. Who are listening to

honest people just trying to get on with

their lives, doing their jobs, raising their

children? They are the people who have

to live with this dodge the bullets,

bearing the brunt of others greed.

    Please, just hold your fire.

    Wie n ander

    voorspoed gun, sal

    self oorvloed h.

    Wie die dors van

    ander les, sal self

    genoeg kry as hy

    dors het.

I refer to the letter (Cyclists

    should start thinking about the

    motorists on roads, TygerBur-

    ger, 23 January).

I am a cyclist and from your

letter I assume that you are

    not and never was one.

    The death of Burry Stander

had me questioning myself if I

    should continue to cycle or

    rather take up another sport

which I rather can do on a

    field or indoors.

    I cycle almost everyday and

when I get home, I thank the

Lord that I got back safely. I

agree with you that we as

cyclist have to look after our

own safety, but surely you as a

    motorist also have a responsi-

bility to look out for me.

    Numerous times we have near

misses of trucks and cars that

pass us within the safe 1.5

    meter zone.

Some cars will pass you just

to turn right in front of you so

that you have to slam on the

    brakes.

    You say that cyclist ride

    outside the yellow line and

that you have to sit behind

them. We have just been to

    Ireland in December, there the

cars do sit behind the cyclists,

where there is no yellow line,

and wait for a gap to pass

    them safely without putting

    anybodys lives in danger. And

that is the norm, because they

respect each others right to be

    on the road.

    You mention that you have

    to drive into the oncoming

traffic, but if you regard a

    cyclist as just another road

user, you will wait until it is

safe to pass like you will do

    with another motor vehicle.

    You also mention that

    Government should make it a

law that all cyclist must be

    registered and display a

    registration number. A big

    number of Mountain bikers in

    the Western Cape already

    belong to various clubs, like

    the Tygerberg Mountainbike

    Club (TBMC) and everybody

    displays their own specific

    about the motorists on roads,

    TygerBurger, 23 January).

I am both a cyclist and

    motorist and have travelled the

    Bottelary Road many times on

both of these forms of trans-

    port.

I do agree that there are

large groups of cyclists that use

    this very popular cycling route

from time to time, and also

    agree that some are misbehav-

ing by riding three or four

    abreast. The various Western

    Cape cycling clubs and regional

    bodies are working hard to

    address these problems.

    Cyclists, like all other

    vehicles, are not supposed to

    ride inside the yellow lines,

they do so out of courtesy to

    faster vehicles and for self

    preservation to some extent.

There needs to be a serious

paradigm shift in the way all

    road users in SA think

    motorists, cyclists, taxis, the

    whole lot, towards a mentality

    of live and let live.

    The Argus Cycle Tour is

coming up soon and the roads

are going to be flooded with

cyclists, so perhaps, if only for

    two months, motorists can

    accept them with some grace

then perhaps some lives can be

    saved and stress levels lowered

    I am deeply disappointed that

    the driver who knocked and

scratched my car just drove off.

    I parked behind Checkers

    supermarket on Sunday 13

January. I was in the store for

20 minutes and when I came

out my silver Polo was badly

    scratched by someone that did

not have the decency to wait

for me to come out the store or

    leave his/her phone number...

    come forward like a decent

    person and admit that you

damaged my vehicle and not a

In reply to Mr De Kocks letter

    (Cyclists should start thinking

    about the motorists on roads,

    TygerBurger, 23 January).

    Your statement that cyclists

    should take responsibility for

their own safety is correct, but

    I have a few concerns.

I am a cyclist myself and use

    the Bottelary Road regularly. I

always ride as far left on the

shoulder of the road as possi-

ble. At stop streets and robots I

go to the front, but always

ensure that I stay out of the

way of cars not to delay or

    obstruct them when they pull

away. Even though I am a very

    considerate cyclist, I have an

    unpleasant incident every

single time I go riding and not

once has it been my fault.

    What your article does not

    mention is the motorists total

    disregard of road rules, the

    impatience, intolerance and

    general lawlessness on our

roads the cause of death and

    serious accidents on our roads.

The solution is, we all need

to obey the rules of the road, to

    have respect for other road

users, to be more patient and

    tolerant towards one another.

the founder, Melvin Jones, was born in

    tes of America.

He once asked his associates in a busi-

ness circle What if you men who are

successful because of your drive, intelli-

gence and ambition were to put your

talents to work improving your commu-

    nities?

Thus, at his invitation, delegates from

mens clubs met in Chicago to lay the

    groundwork for such an organisation

and on June 7, 1917, LionsClubs Interna-

    tional was born.

    Jones eventually abandoned his insu-

rance agency to devote himself full-time

to Lions at its international headquar-

    ters in Chicago.

It was under his dynamic leadership

that Lions clubs earned the prestige ne-

The associations founder was also re-

cognised as a leader by those outside the

association. One of his greatest honours

was in 1945 when he represented Lions

Clubs International as a consultant in

San Francisco, California, at the organi-

    sation of the United Nations.

Jones personal code was: You cant

get very far until you start doing some-

    Valentines Day.

    Cassia, signature restaurant at the

    award-winning Nitida wine estate, will

The quartet, fresh from releasing their

portunity to set some time aside and really

spoil your significant other, she says, add-

teddies, ps. I love you chocolates and those

awful single fake roses in tacky cellophane

    Album journey of self discovery

around for 12 years. Jesse and JP are joined

by Hein Schultz on lead guitar and Logan

    Scott on bass.

JP says discovering the band has been

about themselves, as well as the music in-

    dustry.

We are getting to the point where when

we do the new album, well know exactly

what to do differently, he says.

Jesse says he has been working on many

projects and even doing some production

    work.

Im doing things I never thought Id do

    before, he says.

And were talking about recording a new

    single, Jesse adds.

We have a lot of plans, its just about get-

ting stuff in the right order, he says.

Those plans Jesse is talking about, include

a possible live DVD, to chronicle the bands

    12 years.

In April, they are going to KKNK and

theres a possibility of an overseas trip in the

    pipeline.

For now, they are busy with the final

touches on their album, before the launch.

I think it will be launched very soon, JP

says, urging fans to keep an eye out formore

    details.

JJB will be performing at Berties Moor-

ing on 10 February from 18:00.

    Entrance is free.

    LOUISA STEYL

This last year for the band has been a jour-

ney of discovering ourselves through the al-

    bum.

So explains JP Crouch, drummer for the

    Jesse Jordan Band.

    Thebandreleased thealbum,Ready for the

World, last year, and they are finally getting

ready to release the music video for the title

    track.

The bands meticulous nature meant they

worked on different concepts before they

were happy with the direction of the video.

JP says they had to decide between a sto-

ryline video or using conceptual visual ele-

    ments.

We kind of just had to workwith themes-

sage of the song, he says.

The result is amusic video that represents

    thebands journey, both tomeeting eachoth-

er and moving through the music industry.

We have tried to portray it as much as

possible without being too deliberate, JP

    says.

Jesse Jordan, the bands vocalist, points

out that the music video ends up where the

    band recorded the album.
