Texting has its own language.

We use that language as a life

line to connect to our friends

and family. We send pictures.

We chat. We text.

But texting while driving is

dangerous, and students at

Gunter High School were

reminded recently about the

risks. See story on page 2.

pledge banner. RIGHT: Superin-

tendent Dr. Siler handed out

Gunter High School students participated in an assembly centered on the dangers of texting and driving on September 27. The AT&T “It Can Wait” public awareness campaign is focused on a simple, powerful message: No text is worth dying for.

Those who send text messages while driving are 23 times more likely to be in a crash. The “It Can Wait” movement focuses on educating the public – especially teens – on the dangers of texting and driving.

The program calls on all drivers to take the no-texting-and-driving pledge, and share their promise with others via Twitter (#itcanwait) and Facebook.

GHS students watched a ten minute documentary told through the voice of teenagers who had been the cause of a texting while driving accident or who lost a loved one because of texting while driving. The video highlights the life-changing impact of texting while driving and encourages teens to take a pledge that says no text is worth the risk…it can wait!

Kevin Price, Fire Chief of Gunter Volunteer Fire and Rescue, shared with students his personal stories of responding to emergency calls caused by texting and the distraction of cell phones while driving.

“This is huge,” Price said. “Please don’t make us respond to an accident involving you. Driving is a privilege and getting behind the wheel is a great responsibility. Don’t abuse that privilege.”

Chief Price also relayed a message from Gunter Police Chief Bryce Kennedy that many of the drunk driving reports that the police receive are actually situations where the driver wasn’t drunk, but texting. The results can be the same: hurting yourself or hurting others.

Following the assembly, students were asked to sign the “It Can Wait” pledge banner and received orange thumb bands to wear as a reminder to not text and drive.

A recent survey reported by AT&T found that while 97 percent of teens say they know texting while driving is dangerous, 43 percent admit to doing so. 77 percent of those teens also said they’ve seen their parents text and drive – and 75 percent say it is “common” among their friends.

To reduce the temptation to look away from the road, the company developed the DriveMode™ mobile app that will automatically send a customizable reply to incoming texts, emails and wireless-originated calls – much like an “out-of-office” alert – notifying the sender or wireless caller that the user is driving and unable to respond.

For more information on the movement, watch the videos or sign the pledge online, visit www.itcanwait.com.

Be smart. Don’t text and drive. No text message is worth a life.

Garrett Hunter, Nate Yansky and Casen

Driskell proudly wear their thumb bands after

signing the “no texting while driving” pledge.

Natalie Newman and Jade

Allen sign the pledge and get

their bands.

When it comes to driving a vehicle, all text messages can – and should – wait.

Big Changes at GMS By Principal Pat Autry

You might read the title of this article and think it was going to be about the dress code changes this year

or personal electronic devices or even some new initiative we have going.

But it’s not. The is another kind of BIG CHANGE going on at GMS – not noticeable at any given moment –

but VERY obvious given the right circumstance.

At the end of the very first day of school, I saw two students walking down the hall side by side – a really

small 5th grader and a really TALL 8th grader – and I thought, “WOW! That’s what happens in the four years

at GMS. Our fifth graders are GREAT – very responsible and doing a fantastic job of learning how things

work in middle school. But compared to the 8th grader, that 5th grader was tiny!

In the four years we have them, our students grow from elementary kids to high school young adults,

each year becoming more and more responsible for their own learning. This doesn’t happen by chance,

but through great planning and distinct differences in requirements and expectations from year to year.

For example, in 5th grade, students complete their daily assignments in their planner and the parent

reviews and signs this each evening. In 8th grade, the students are still given a planner, but it is largely up

to them to use it to help organize their assignments, activities, etc.

While working to build a solid foundation for future studies in core classes, middle

school is also a place for trying new things and finding out what one likes and

his/her talents. Students can choose from several sports and arts activities to find

their passion. At GMS, we have almost 100% of our 7th and 8th graders involved in

one or more extracurricular activities!

We take all of this very seriously, working to help them develop academic skills,

character, and much more as they prepare for high school – and life.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION

Alvin Jackson from Centurion American Development Group gave an update on the Bridges Development Plan. He indicated that two home builders (Lion’s Gate Homes and Megatel Homes) have begun the process for home construction with each submitting requests for 25 home permits. The two builders have plans to construct 10-12 homes by the end of the year and the development hopes to build and sell 25-30 homes per year. Centurion American specializes in Master Planned Communities (Carter Ranch in Celina, The Trophy Club and the Resort in Eagle Mountain Lake in Fort Worth, to name a few). Mr. Jackson also gave an update on the resort pool that is almost complete as well as the future tennis courts and workout facilities.

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT

Student/Staff Recognition: The following organizations were recognized -10U All Star Baseball Team for their State Championship and the Gunter HS FFA for their National Chapter Rating at the Gold Level.

Back to School Update: Dr. Siler reported that all three campuses were off to a great start and there was much energy and excitement from our students and staff.

Enrollment Update: Our total district enrollment is 807. This is up 2 students from the first day of school. While this is 33 students less than last year, it is right at the number that was used to develop the 2012-13 budget. Dr. Siler also shared information on transfer students and noted that out-of-district students make up nearly 20% of our overall enrollment. Our enrollment from Tioga ISD is down 17 students and that trend will continue as they have recently opened up a high school in their district. Elementary - 271, Middle School - 241, High School- 295, District = 807.

A full Financial Report was given including account updates from Landmark Bank, Lone Star Investments, a General Operating Report, I&S Report, Grayson County Coop Report and a report from Workers Comp.

Communications: Dr. Siler discussed the annual joint Tioga/Gunter Joint Meeting which is tentatively slated for February or March.

AYP Results: Sara McCarty presented the results to the Board which noted that ALL campuses and the district MET AYP! This year, 71% of districts across the state failed to meet AYP which is a huge testament to the tremendous performance of the students and teachers of GISD!

Financial Planning for 2012-2013 and Beyond: Dr. Siler shared that the future budgeting process has already begun and shared that two budget board workshops were scheduled this fall to focus on future budget plans.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

The Capital Improvements Project Cost and Status Report was presented.

The HVAC units are still in the process of being installed in the Event Center (although the facility has been cool enough for events this past week). We anticipate installation of the first unit by the end of this week

The visitor press box is complete along with the handicap access and sidewalks throughout the complex.

Fall is finally here! October is finally here, and with October comes National Red Ribbon

Week. GISD will celebrate Red Ribbon Week on October 29 - November 2. We will have

various activities going on at each of the campuses during the week that will emphasize living a

drug free life.

The Red Ribbon Campaign® was started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered

DEA agent Kiki Camarena in 1985. This began the continuing tradition of displaying Red

Ribbons as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs. The mission of the Red Ribbon

Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a DRUG -

FREE AMERICA.

In schools more than ever, when everyone is wearing a red ribbon, that symbol carries the

message: “We Walk Away From Drugs!”

mericanos.

Hace veinte años, me fui a Argentina. Yo estaba viviendo con una familia, estudiando la economía y nadando con su

equipo nacional. En ese momento yo podía hablar español muy bien. Ahora… no mucho!

Dr. Siler spoke with the PADRES group at its September

meeting and shared a brief introduction of herself as

well as her goals for the students in Gunter ISD. Dr. Siler

began studying Spanish in 7th grade and studied all the

way through college. She even spent a summer in

Argentina living with a family and swimming with the

Argentinian National Swim Team. She’s quick to tell you

her Spanish is REALLY rusty, but the text of her speech is

below.

The Gunter Tigers are currently 4-1 and have had a tough non-district schedule. We were

excited to wrap up our non district competition with a 41-0 victory over Alvord on Friday

night.

We talk to our players each week about improving their play, out hustling and out hitting

their opponent. Hopefully, this is on display each Friday night and especially as we head into

district. Next week, we will have our bye week before we start district play against Bells on

October 12. All of our team goals are in front of us. We must continue to strive for excellence

on and off the field and continue to come together as a team. We would like to thank the

community for all of the support and look forward to seeing you at Homecoming.

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

SEPTEMBER

Fifth Grade: Zander Turner

Sixth Grade: Ana Mercado

Seventh Grade: Hunter Simco

Eighth Grade: Cameryn Warren

By: Zack Mitchell McConnell

It was June 9, 2012, at 3 am and 13 students

with 4 sponsors from GMS had just come home

from the trip of a lifetime. We had gone

absolutely everywhere on our Washington D.C.

trip sponsored by the courageous Mrs. Inglish.

Initially, our trip started in Williamsburg, VA

hearing the stories of haunted historical build-

ings, on a late night ghost tour in the dark

shadows of a time gone by. The next day, we

explored the Jamestown settlement and Coloni-

al Williamsburg where we were able to take a

look into the past. We discussed how people

functioned in period clothing and performed

daily duties. Then we were off to Mount Vernon

where we took a tour of George Washington’s

manor overlooking the Potomac River.

During a chartered bus ride, we whisked by

numerous landmarks for quick photos at the

Washington Monument, the White House,

Capitol Hill, the Vietnam Memorial, the Korean

Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, Martin

Luther King Jr. Memorial, the WWII Memorial,

the Iwo Jima Memorial, the Pentagon Memorial,

and the Lincoln Memorial.

Wrapping up the trip, we went to the Arlington

National Cemetery and Ford’s Theater where

Lincoln was assassinated. Did I mention the

breakfast we enjoyed at the Hard Rock

Café? We were also mesmerized by the exhib-

its at the renowned Smithsonian Museum.

After an amazing trip, we headed home to

use all our newly found historical knowledge

that we gained and incorporate these insights

into our daily lives.

On September 11, using Google Hangout, Ms. Racanelli's 6th Grade

class taught another 5th/6th grade class in Aguascalientes Mexico all

about figurative language. Kade McCarty taught them about hyperbole,

Hannah Kelley taught them about alliteration, and Braiden Clopton

taught them about onomatopoeias. The classes will meet again online to

learn more about the Mexican culture.

Using UStream, the 6th graders were able to stream their presentations

on Traits of Writing live. They invited parents to watch as their students

presented their topics. Additionally, they were able to record the broad-

cast for parents who couldn't make it live. If you want to check them out,

visit http://goo.gl/ue2xZ . The students commented that maybe they still

need to practice speaking loudly.

Recently, the 6th grade class had a

student who missed several days of

school due to illness but still wanted to

participate in class. The class hooked

her up with a Google Hangout and she

made it to all her classes via a webcam

and laptop. She didn't miss a thing.

6th grade has also setup their Google

IDs so they are looking forward to all

the collaboration that will be going on

very soon. The students are already

blogging about what's going on at

school. This allows them to practice

their writing skills for a public audience.

Ms. Racanelli is hoping that as the

year progresses, you will be able to

watch their writing abilities grow. You

can check out the blog post at http://

dracanelli.blogspot.com/.

GMS Rocks! From the Gunter Middle School PTO

The Gunter Middle School PTO has been very active so far this year,

hosting meals for the teachers, selling T-shirts, working concessions

and planning for a booth at the carnival on October 23.

If you don’t have your GMS Rocks! T-shirt yet, order forms are

available at the school. Plus, we will have forms available at the carni-

val. We’ve sold quite a few T-shirts so far and are planning a GMS

Spirit Day Oct. 19 where all students and staff at the school will re-

ceive a special prize for wearing their shirt that day.

We’ll also have loaded baked potatoes and drinks for sale at the car-

nival! Look for notices soon requesting donations of water, soft drinks,

potatoes and all the fixings. Money raised during this fun annual

event will support educational activities for students, as well as the

annual Star Student recognition program.

Finally, thanks to the many parents who have indicated an interest

to volunteer at the school. Your efforts are one of the reasons Gunter

Middle School is such a wonderful place for our hard-working students

and teachers. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to one of

the PTO officers:

Core Essential October

The night of October 31 sure would be boring without a hint of this month’s new value. But instead of passing out candy to three-dozen “pirates”, you will get to see everything from “hippies” to “wall street execs”, “dinosaurs” to “kangaroos”.

Why? Because this month we are all learning a little something about

Individuality - discovering who you are meant to be so you can make a difference.

Gunter Elementary School would

like to say a big THANK YOU to all

the parents, grandparents, and

friends for supporting us through

Target’s “2012 Take Charge of

Education Redcard” program.

We were given a check for $345 to

use for our students.

With this money we were able to

renew our subscription to

Brainpop, Brainpop Jr., and

Spanish Brainpop. Brainpop is an

online program with science and

social studies video clips that

enhance and enrich our science

and social studies student

objectives. Thank you again for

supporting Gunter Elementary

students. We appreciate it!

A BIG THANK YOU to The First

United Methodist Church of Celina

for their generous giving to our

students and teachers to help

alleviate the cost of school

suppl ies. The First United

Methodist Church provided a $225

Wal-Mart gift card to GES.

This money will be used to

provide school supplies for

students in need and also to help

support our classrooms with

needed supplies. We appreciate

the generosity and support greatly.
