A Piece of Solar History at Solar 2017The fifth Vanguard satellite created for launch in 1958. Seven were created, #4 made it into space. It was the first satellite to be solar powered. Communication with it was lost in 1964, but it remains the oldest manmade satellite still in orbit. Vanguard 1 was described by then-‐Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev as "the grapefruit satellite."
