Rush Enterprises to Receive $800,000 in Tasty Corporate WelfareLets just get right to it: On

    Monday night, Council went

ahead and approved 4-Bs plan to

give Rush Enterprises (2014 revenues $4.7

Billion) $800,000 in taxpayer funds to

preemptively stop Rush from moving out of the

area. No, Rush has not threatened to leave.

In fact, theyre about to sink $1.6 million into

refurbishing their offices, which indicates an

intent to stay right where they are.

    According to 4-B President Bob

Pennywise Gray, (in the June 26 Herald-

Zeitung), Rush didnt even ask for the money.

Also according to Gray, the money is for job

preservation, even though the plan allows

Rush to cut its workforce by about 25%

(per Gray, again, in the HZ, Rush employs

nearly 400 full-time staff members). Gray

continually touts how important it is that

Rush keep 300 jobs here, never mentioning

that they currently, according to his media

    statement, employ 400. Remember our

motto: An act of omission is an act of intent.

And thats a significant omission. A whopper,

    one might say.

The idea that we need to give a company

nearly a million dollars it didnt ask for, for

a job preservation plan that allows maybe

100 jobs to be eliminated, seems incredibly

suspect. We cant believe the guys at 4-B are

that stupid. Perhaps they are, but its just as

likely that the real motivation for the deal

simply isnt being discussed. Gray comes off

here as either simple-minded or dishonest.

Why hes allowing that is anybodys guess,

but since hes willing to take the hit, so be it.

Might be worth it to him.

    Our favorite living old man,

    Wayne Rudolph, got up in

    front of Council and delivered

a damn fine refutation of the

    $800,000 plan. We dont

have room for the whole thing,

but what follows is most of it, with

    Grays response immediately after.

Rudolph Throws DownTwo weeks ago, I requested Council to

veto a 4-B Board recommendation to give

$800,000 to Rush Enterprises, the richest

    corporation in New Braunfels. Following

my request, Mr Meek of the Chamber of

Commerce, and Mr Pogue, a member of

the 4-B Board, defended the $800,000 gift

as necessary to insure that Rush Enterprises

remain in the city for the next ten years. To

add frosting to this $800,000 cupcake,

Rush Enterprises would be allowed to reduce

its workforce by almost 25 percent, and it

would not even be required to increase the

    taxable valuation of its property.

At no time, has Rush Enterprises even

considered or threatened to move from New

Braunfels, a fact attested to by both the

Chamber and the 4-B Board. So the Chamber

and the 4-B Board want this Council to spend

$800,000 in taxpayer money because of

their completely unwarranted fear that Rush

Enterprises will move from New Braunfels.

Does this mean that hereafter, our taxpayers

will be expected to fund any other business,

whenever the Chamber and 4-B Board

    imagine they may be moving?

Do you think you can approve

this recommendation to fund the richest

corporation in New Braunfels and then say

no to other businesses that would likely

    expect to be treated equally?

    Continued from page 3.

Mr Meek testified that the Chamber

of Commerce surveys 51 city business

annually, to identify and assist them with

their needs. Have the Chamber and the

4-B Board ever offered any of these other

business the same deal they have offered

Rush Enterprises? Has any other business,

without even asking, been offered thousands

of tax dollars with the understanding that it

could reduce its workforce and not have

to increase the taxable valuation, only by

agreeing to remain in the city for ten years?

I dont think any city council has ever been

asked to approve such a sweetheart deal

    as this one.

And wasnt it not just a few years

ago that the 4-B Board was giving Rush

Enterprises an outright gift of a $95,000

generator which the Council wisely vetoed?

Why is our 4-B Board so eager to give

away our tax dollars to Rush Enterprises?

Mr Meek stated that this $800,000

handout was to help Rush Enterprises

modernize its 30 year-old office building.

    But Rush Enterprises has depreciated

that same building over those 30 years,

and has received for each of those years

both a state and federal depreciation tax

rebate. Those tax rebates were intended to

encourage Rush Enterprises to upgrade its

    headquarters building. Those tax rebates,

over the years, must have totaled tens of

thousands of dollars. Now the Chamber

and the 4-B Board want you to add another

$800,000 of our local taxes to the 30 years

of state and federal tax rebates already

    collected by Rush Enterprises.

This proposal is an absolute insult to the

    taxpayers of New Braunfels.

Gray Delivers Flaccid Response; Wins Anyway(This is Grays full statement, minus his

greeting to Council. Emphasis is ours.)

    A little background on 4-B, a lot

of you know we invest in quality of life

projects, we also invest in jobs and

primary jobs, and the Rush proposal falls

in that, its a retention program. And we

voted unanimously in support of this, about

a month ago, and Im more strongly in

support of this vote today than I was even

30 days ago. I believe its a solid vote, and

if we could imagine and attract a company

to town that has high paying jobs, that

has hundreds of jobs, has benefits, has a

very substantial tax roll, and is a strong

corporate citizen, Rush would get a check

box, a check by every box. They are that

sort of corporate citizen and a high wage

    company here in town.

    Some criticize, did Rush even

threaten to move? No, they did not. But

its part of our retention program to go

out and speak to folks, and I point to our

suburb to the south, also known as San

    Antonio, AT&T made no announcement,

and gave no indications they were moving

to Dallas in 2009 they left and they took

over 1,000 senior jobs with them and it

was a body blow to our, to San Antonio,

to our neighbors, in terms of economic

development, in terms of prestige, in terms

of really, overall stature of San Antonio in

the country. (Editors Note: AT&T continues

to maintain a massive corporate presence

    in downtown San Antonio.)

We at 4-B have been proactive in our

job retention program, the way Mr Meek,

two weeks ago, discussed. Weve met

with almost 40 companies over the last

couple years on job retention. Sometimes

were criticized for not meeting and trying

to focus our efforts, and were only trying

to, uh, local companies, were only trying

    to attract companies from out-of-town.

This is one company who is in town, has

a strong history, has a great financial

standing, this is something we thought

that we could do for a local company, to

    help keep a company local.

Just the 300 jobs, its over 25 million dollars in annual payroll, they have over a million dollars in annual taxes in the community, its as Jeff pointed out in his preview, the payback period on this would be two-and-a-half years (Editors Note: This is not a loan. Thats money the City would be getting from Rush anyway.) I dont go to Las Vegas but if you see those sort of numbers and those sort of stats, I think its a pretty wise investment on our part for a small amount of money. Something if they were a foreign company and trying to move here, it would cost us much more than $800,000 so, its our proactive approach to try to keep companies in town. (Editors Note: Gray is the type of person Vegas likes to see in a casino. The type that equates gambling with investment.)

So to summarize, this is a job retention program, for an existing employer with 300 high wage jobs with benefits. Its second, they provide a strong personal and real tax base here in the community, one thats rising since 2014, a little over a million dollars, in city, county, and ISD. And third, theyre a strong corporate citizen. So I will hope that the 4-B $800,000 proposal, I would urge you to support our proposal.

The UpshotBoth Rudolph and District Two rep Aja Edwards brought up the issue of Rush being allowed to cut its workforce from 400 to 300 as part of the job preservation deal. Gray ignored that elephant in the room, but instead kept repeating the words job preservation and how important those 300 jobs are to the city. 4-B could have easily put strings on the deal requiring Rush to maintain, or even increase, their current employment numbers. The fact that they didnt, and that Gray refused to address the stats that both Rudolph and Edwards brought up, could well be an indication that Rush intends to layoff a quarter of its staff. If I were to return to Las Vegas, and then forced to bet on Rush either leaving town or laying off 100 people, Id put my money on the layoffs. Thats where this deal is pointing. Well keep an eye on it.

If Rush breaks the deal, they are only obligated to give back a pro-rated portion of the funds, rather than the entire $800,000. Should Rush decide to leave, they need only find a city willing to give them more than what theyd owe on the New Braunfels deal in order to come out ahead. Once again, no risk on the part of the recipient of 4-B funds, and in this case, no responsibility to maintain their employment numbers, along with tacit approval to fire a quarter of their staff. The longer Gray spoke, the more this seemed like a tribute deal motivated by corporate worship. A tithe, if you will, because were lucky to have such a great company here. I wanted hand him a warm towel when he finished.

$800,000 is less than two hours revenue to Rush, (2014 revenues $4.7 Billion), but its a huge amount of money to the Citys budget New Braunfels takes in less than three percent of what Rush does. With receipts of nearly $13 million a day, Rush wont even notice the cash, and it certainly wont inspire loyalty should they decide to move. Our roads and drainage, however, still arent up to par, and property taxes keep going up. Hooray.

Only District Ones George Green and District Twos Edwards voted against the plan.

    PROFITS TO BENEFIT

Saturday night approaches and you could spend it participating in the time honored American tradition of drinking beer in front of the TV while wearing a stained undershirt and boxers (granny panties, if youre a woman) with your hand partway inside those drawers.

Or You could go out to watch two world-

class ice sculptors compete with one another, drink wine and/or margaritas, listen to music, and eat samiches.

If you choose the first option, there is no hope and the terrorists have won. If you choose the latter, the festivities will be Saturday, August 1, at Longshot Wine Bar and Tasting Room on Landa Street.

Longshot is bringing ice artists Buddy The Viking Rasmussen and Reverend Butter (dont laugh at the mans name). From 8 to 10pm these two men will use frighteningly dangerous implements to create works of art from blocks of ice.

We want to bring something to New Braunfels thats unconventional but unique, said Longshots manager Charis Kempen. We dont really have things like that here. This is usually something you are more likely to see in San Antonio or Austin.

Ice sculpting, particularly during Texas summer, is certainly a transitory affair. Like Tibetan sand mandalas, the sculptures offer a lesson of impermanence of the material world. Water turns to ice, ice returns to water, which means the ice artists will create beautiful pieces that will, inevitably, end in their original states. Thus, the art in ice

carving is not just in the finished piece, but in its creation as well.

To say that the work produced by the Viking and the Reverend is good doesnt do their carving skills justice. Both men are World Ice Art Champions and produce exquisite pieces that range from mythological and religious symbols, to animals, furniture and even buildings. The art in ice carving is not just in the finished piece, but in its creation as well.

Keeping ice, well, ice, is certainly an interesting challenge in August, especially since the temperatures for New Braunfels this weekend are expected to reach above 600 degrees. Usually during an August in Texas, ice says Screw this! and hops aboard the hobo ice train in order to return to its Canadian breeding grounds, where it will spawn and die.

What makes the ice used for this Saturdays competition different is that it is very, very, very large. Viking Rasmussen and the most Rev. Butter will be using 1,000 pounds of ice, Kempen said. Thats a pretty big flock of ice, and would be interesting to see on its own. That much ice

will not melt in a hurry. Were also doing it later in the evening

so the temperatures will be a little cooler, she said. Where were located is pretty shaded and usually pretty cool year around because were near the Comal River. Our courtyard is pretty comfortable.

Kempen said the two men will sculpt, take a break, and sculpt some more. From the icy detritus, the artists will carve mugs, which patrons can purchase to hold their margaritas.

    We will be offering bottomless

margaritas for $20 but if you buy a frozen

carved ice mug from the artists, you can have

the margaritas for $15, she said.

For those who just are unable stop

themselves from touching stuff, it is highly

advisable to avoid the social faux pas of

chipping ice from the sculpture into your

drink. This is because you do not put ice into

    a glass of wine, neophyte!

    Owned and founded by Jasper

MacDonald, Longshot is one of a few true

Texas wineries in the New Braunfels area.

Longshot makes all of its own wine from

grapes the winery grows in Brownfield,

near Lubbock, Kempen said. The company

does everything from beginning to end, from

growing the grapes, picking the grapes,

pressing the grapes into wine and aging

    that wine in barrels.

For a nice chilled wine on a warm

    evening, Kempen said she recommends

patrons try their new Cactus White wine.

Its a chilled white wine with a beautiful

bouquet of honeysuckle and pear, the

manager said. The wine isnt too sweet and

easy to drink. The Cactus is from our painters

series. The Cactus White costs $6 per glass

    or $16 for a bottle.

Also from the Painters series, Kempen

pointed to the Jo Ann Semi-Sweet White. She

also advises patrons to try the Longshot house

wine, the Sweet Red. The tasting room will

be open from noon-11 p.m., so you can dial

your wine in before the events begin.

Across Landa Street from what was

once the LCRA building (which used to be

the old mill), Longshot is located within the

oldest house in New Braunfels. Built in 1847,

the wine bar was once used to house the

mills managers. MacDonald has done well

to maintain the integrity of the buildings

    original design.

    While artistic ice competitors Buddy

the Viking (the son of Mjolnir and Yggdrasil

Rasmussen) and the Rev. Butter (the son of

Pontiff and Cardinal Butter) are certainly the

main attraction, there is a lot more going on

    at Longshot on Saturday.

Country and folk musician Austin Gilliam

will be performing between 7 and 10 pm,

and if youre hungry, Texas Po Boys will have

a food truck there to serve po boys, sliders

and bacon crack, which Kempen said is a

type of candied bacon. If you are wondering

what wine to drink with your candied bacon,

I have no idea, but Im sure the staff at

    Longshot can properly guide you.

The wine bar will also be selling tickets

for Casino Night, which will benefit the

    Comal County Childrens Advocacy. Tickets

are $60 and go to a most worthy cause.

Kempen also wants everyone to know

that children are allowed, so parents dont

have to find a babysitter or a designated

driver if the kids are really advanced.

Come on and check out something

different and something new, all while

keeping cool, she said. Everyone is

welcome because the event is family-and-pet-

friendly. There will definitely be something for

    everyone to do!

Have a Happy Bud Dallman Day!That was the statement on the cover of our July 16th edition, which featured a picture of the legendary Bud Dallman alongside two young swimmers, members of the Landa Park Dolphins, a swim team that Dallman coached for over 50 years. A little more than a week later, he was gone.

A man whose life took him from Wisconsin, to the Air Force and eventually to New Braunfels, Dallman made the most of his half century+ in South Texas. In addition to establishing the Dolphins, Dallman started the swim teams at both New Braunfels High School and Canyon High School, coaching three high school all-Americans and seven world and American record holders. At a larger scale, he introduced automatic timing to Texas and to the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation and also organized and staged the first major coaching clinic in Texas at Trinity University. As a swimmer himself, Dallmann medaled at the first World Masters Games in 1985 and the first FINA World Masters Swimming Championships in 1986, setting world records along the way. Dallman was later inducted into the Texas Swimming & Diving Hall of Fame.

But it was his influence on youth swimmers that truly resonated in the community. There are families of Dolphins all throughout New Braunfels. Children who are currently in the program are swimming the lanes at Landa Park because their parents did, and their parents before them, all coached by Bud and his staff. You talk to those swimmers, and what they learned most from Dallman wasnt necessarily the butterfly or the backstroke. They learned togetherness, a sense of belonging, what it meant to be dedicated and how to succeed in life.

Anytime I think of some of the great icons in sports to come from New Braunfels, I first think of the athletes. A list that includes Kliff Kingsbury, the greatest quarterback in

the history of New Braunfels High School who later went on to star at Texas Tech, reach the NFL and is now the Head Coach of his alma mater in Lubbock. Canyon High Schools Lance Berkman who one day could possibly join former teammate Craig Biggio in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Smithson Valley boasts its own football (Joe Pawelek, former Big XII defensive player of the year) and baseball (Jason LaRue, a 12-year MLB player) stars. NBHS has turned into a factory for tennis and track athletes now succeeding at the next level.

There have been coaches who have used their brief time in New Braunfels as a spring board for their careers, such as Karen Chisum, one time a Head Coach of the Unicorn Volleyball program (who help found the Fraulein Volleyfest nearly 40 years ago), now preparing for her 35th season of coaching just up road at Texas State University. Billy Gillespie, who once led Texas A&Ms mens basketball program to the Sweet 16, made one of his first head coaching stops at Canyon High School. Some coaches have planted their roots in Comal County, establishing distinguished programs such as Larry Hill (going on year 23 as Head Football Coach at Smithson Valley), CHS volleyball coach Heather Sanders and Unicorn tennis coach David Mueller.

These are all big and important names to the local sports scene, each making an impact during their time in the area, no matter how long or brief its been.

Then theres Bud. A man who influenced generations of swimmers and families. A man who loved those he coached as much as he loved the water. A man whos legacy will live on for years to come. A man we lost. A man we say goodbye to. A man we say thank you to.

Have a Happy Bud Dallman Day.

Dear Mexican: I wasnt born in this country but I got here as quickly as I could at the age of ten. I was born in Mexico and live in Houston, a city that is bursting at the seams with Mexicans and Latinos from every country south of the border.

I think I have the solution to all this immigration debate. The light bulb went on recently when I was attending a breakfast put on by big-time real estate developers at a five-star hotel. They were pitching new communities being built in resort cities starting at a mere half a million dollars. So why not just annex Mexico? We make it easier for rich gabachos to go south with their money and create lots of jobs.

    El Coco

Dear Coconut: Isnt that what NAFTA did?

Dear Mexican: All my Mexican friends are second or third-generation, and really relate to Mexico in a generic way but are shaky on the details of history. Which grupo should they hang with? The bloodthirsty Were here to kill you and steal all your stuff conquistadores or the cut out your beating heart and worship anything that moves indios?

    White Who Likes Brown Power

Dear Gabacho: Gabachas, of course: the blonder, the better!

Dear Mexican: Why is it that you guys pack yourselves eight-deep in a pick-up truck cab that wouldnt hold me, my huntin dog, and my girlfriend n then drive down the freeway slower than Canadian snowbirds lookin for Sun City? Almost makes me want to reach back n grab my deer rifle outta the rack!

    Road-Raged Red Neck

Dear Gabacho: You do that, boy, and all those Mexicans will pour of the camioneta and give you some good ol fashioned chingazos like we always doand theres your answer.

Dear Mexican: Im going to graduate school for Mexican history and I had a professor of Chicano studies call me a Mexicanist. Have you heard of this term before? And what does it mean?

    La Sonorense

Dear Woman from Sonora: Yes, Ive heard of the termit means your professor is an insecure pendejo.

Dear Mexican: I love your articles and would invite you to El Tepayac in Boyle Heights for a burrito, but I dont have enough bus fare for the 47 family members you will probably bring along. But I need some love advice. I think I really fancy a Mexican lady that regularly recycles cans and bottles around my neighborhood. Shes like a 7 out of 10, wears jeans and boots, and looks like she can really please the right kind of guy. Im a middle-aged gero gabacho that isnt unpleasing to look at. Dolphins Remember Coach Bud

There is little that I can say about Coach Bud Dallmann that hasnt already been said. He was a great man who touched countless lives. He taught my children (as hed taught so many others children over the years) and he inspired me.

Ours is a swim family. Our kids have spent years getting up at the crack of dawn to make their way to the pool for their morning workouts. Sometimes Ive griped (under my breath) about getting up so early to haul the kids to the pool. My children go around smelling like chlorine. We plan family vacation based on when the kids are going to State. Year in and year out there has been a constant that I could count on: Coach Bud. Coach Bud was there at the pool every day in the early morning hours and every afternoon. He wasnt just passively sitting there, either. He was coaching! He was passing on hard-earned knowledge to young people and he was doing it with vim and vigor. Watch that flip-turn! Kick more. Youre not kicking enough. Good, job! Keep up the good work!

I swear that Coach Bud thrived on chlorine. I think the smell of it kept him young. Id greet him in the morning with, Good morning, Coach! How are you? and hed always reply, Too blessed to be stressed. He meant it. Bud Dallmann was one of those guys whod figured things out. He knew he had it good. He knew the value of giving to his community and the blessings that flowed from that. He felt blessed and the whole time it was he who was a blessing to us. He inspired me because he showed that happiness and contentment can be found in being there for others. Some folks just talk the talk. Coach Bud walked the walk. I miss him. My family misses him. New Braunfels has lost a great man and we are all the poorer for it.

    Kerstan Copeland

If you ever asked Coach how he was doing, his answer was always humbly, Better than I deserve, but you would be hard pressed to find a kinder, more patient

or loving man than Coach Bud Dallmann. Since 1962, Bud taught children to swim competitively, who taught children to swim competitively, who now teach other children to swim competitively. And all that time he was on deck, involved in every aspect of the club he built from scratch, and positively affecting the lives of every single swimmer he met. All without taking a dime as head coach.

He was an Air Force veteran, a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, mentor and coach that made more of a positive impact in New Braunfels than most could make in three lifetimes. When you have coached thousands of swimmers in the community over the last 53 years, it is difficult not to run into generations of families who were somehow or another involved in his creation: the Landa Park Dolphins. If you have ever been to the Landa Park Aquatic Complex, you have him to thank.

As a coach, he nurtured a competitive spirit and a desire to challenge oneself, and taught discipline, humility, and that the clearest path to success is the elimination of doubt. He said that with the right attitude, you Can Do. This Can Do ideal has followed every swimmer that came through his program, not just in athletics, but into every area of our lives. For that, and the ability to instill this same attitude in our own children, and for the swimmers we coach, we will be eternally grateful.

He was a man of high standards, high standards for kids in the water, for his coaching staff and for the South Texas swimming community. He had a particular way of doing things, but when you look at his accolades on the local, state and national levels and the caliber of swimmers emerging from his program, you saw it worked. And while he may have been unwavering in his method of coaching, he was equally unwavering in his devotion to seeing and developing the best in others. He was always able find something special in a person and hold on to that like a vise, and if he loved you once, he always did. Forever.

And he was not only strong in spirit, but also of mind and body. It may be hard to imagine that a man, three years ago, at

92 got in the water and started the first leg of a 50 mile relay to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of the Dolphins swim team. Who over a decade and literally hundreds of kids later, could remember telling my mother to bring me over to the team after I completed the city swim course in 1989. Who remembered how I performed and conversations we had at a regional swim meet back in 1993. Who 20 years later had the same firm handshake, the same blue pin-stripped jump suit, even the same haircut. How could anyone not see this man as invincible... as immortal?

Even a broken arm and a bout with pneumonia couldnt keep him from cheering on swimmers at practice and Saturday meets. No doubt a lifetime of swimming kept him young, but so did surrounding himself with young people. If the fountain of youth exists, its waters are pumped into the Olympic pool that Bud Dallmann built in Landa Park.

After his hospitalization a few weeks ago, we had a hard time believing he wouldnt bounce back from this one, like all the others, and to return to the pool deck with his coaching staff. If you ever were a Dolphin, then you know his motto: Better today than yesterday, better tomorrow than today. It was a mantra about improving your time in the water, but all of us who cared about him wanted it to extend to his health as well. But late in the evening on July 24th, with his late wife on his mind, Coach Bud finished his last race, peacefully.

Right up to the very end, Coach was surrounded by his children and friends that love him deeply. He leaves his swim team in the very capable hands of his appointed new head coach, Paige Bird, a former Dolphin, a terrific athlete, and a caring coach who is equipped with all the qualities Bud would want to carry on his legacy.

Whenever someone asks me how I am doing, I will do my best to remember that I am blessed for all that I was given, earned and made. For all of us that knew Bud Dallmann, his spirit will endure in our hearts and continue to cheer us on. Because he deserved that and more.

Media NutsI would like to expand on something Mike Reynolds discussed in last weeks First Word column. This, I hope, will offer readers an insight into what journalists too often have to contend with.

Members of the media, for some reason, spend a great amount of time dealing with people whose relationship with sanity is the equivalent of a passing acquaintance whom they hate. Perhaps its because people take a personal interest in information because, once that information is digested, it becomes part of us. Maybe there are some people who cant handle information that doesnt fit their narrative of the world, so rather than alter that view, they get angry.

This is not to say that most readers are difficult rage monsters. Theyre not, but journalists are more likely to hear from the angry.

Also, this is not to say that there arent disturbed journalists. The media gives itself more awards than any other profession because journalists are underpaid, overworked, overstressed and riddled with the insecurities that come from people hating you.

Here are some of the categories of people that are very quick to pick up the phone or shoot off an email to tell us how to do our jobs or remind us how we ruined their lives:

Stop Making Me Mad with the NewsMy father, who was also a journalist, used to say that if you make both sides angry, then youre doing your job.

Some journalists will disagree with this contention, but experience has taught me that Dads rule is true. I have received more than numerous calls in the past for being a member of the liberal or right-wing media, all for the same story. We are also either muckraking malcontents or in the governments pocket.

This is price for truth. A few years ago, I received numerous

angry phone calls at a newspaper I worked at for writing in a headline that President George W. Bush wanted the government to be allowed to tap cell phones. How do you know what the president wants? I was asked. I pointed out that the president asked Congress for this authority, thus it is something he wants. This explanation only got in the way of their mad.

Youth Sports ParentsThere are some parents who have boundary issues and cannot differentiate their accomplishments with that of their children. Possibly the greatest number of angry calls I have received come from parents who feel that their children (themselves) did not receive the proper media attention for their (the parents) sports heroics.

I once got reamed out by a woman because the newspaper did not do a story about her son. Who pitched a no-hitter. In T-ball.

A sports editor I know once received a call from a grandmother who was angry that her granddaughter did not get more coverage for her performance during a preseason volleyball match. She ended the conversation by telling the editor that he was the reason the teenage suicide rate was so high.

The Deep ThroatsJournalism relies a great deal on tips from sources. However, a valuable source must have information that we can use, or at least a starting point from where we can begin an investigation.

Unfortunately, we get too many tips like this:Whistle sucker: You should look into

(put officials name here) relationship with (put entity here).

Reporter: What is (officials) relationship with (entity)? Do you have some information?

Whistle sucker: Im not going to do your job for you.

If you have a valid tip, great! But we really need something to go on. Making vague accusations or insinuating bizarre conspiracies without any supporting facts make it impossible for us to follow through.

Need a Civics LessonThere are people who will send newspapers letters or stories they have written. When the newspaper refuses to run that copy, the erstwhile writer will complain that the paper has violated his or her right to free press.

If someone wants to utilize their freedom of press, then they can start a newspaper. A newspaper is a privately owned business and what goes into to that newspaper is the prerogative of the owner. The owner has no obligation to print anything. The government has to honor the freedom of the press, not the press itself.

The Minnesota Windmill-Industrial ComplexLast weeks column focused on a personal

aspect of the Minnesota trip, but if you thought

you could get away from my politicizing

everything, you were dead wrong. Im going

to do that here. In fact, when I first considered

the time in Minnesota, it was pretty clear to

me that there was perhaps more to say about

Minnesota than could be placed in a single

column. That said, two things that I noticed

about the state fit so nicely into my general

commentary that they seem tailor-made for

my column. So here they are.

    Windmills. Minnesota, particularly the

western side of it, has a lot of windmills.

Thats not necessarily a bad thing. The

concept is sound, if old, and using them

to produce electricity seems like a fine

idea. Generally, when I find myself fighting

against wind power it has more to do with

government subsidies than with any real

    objection to wind per se.

In fact, windmills in Vermont have

always offered something of a political

mixed blessing. Liberals love the idea of wind

power because they hate fossil fuels, so you

would think that Vermont would be lousy with

them. Two things prevent this, really. The first

is that Vermont is insufficiently flat to provide

any substantial area for wind development

except for on its ridgelines. The second is

that liberals go apoplectic when you suggest

    putting windmills on THEIR ridgelines.

Suddenly you find liberals who are aware

that windmills actually kill a good number

of birds -- wouldnt it be sad if the windmill

lopped a bald eagle in two? and who can

do math, recognizing that a few windmills

in Vermont will not get us off of fossil fuels.

You can see how this would make me root for

windmills at least a little bit.

There are some differences in the

windmills in Minnesota, though. First, there

are lots of them. Lots and lots of them.

Hundreds of them. Second, its flat in

Minnesota. Windmills stand a better than

decent chance of actually working in this type

of environment. Third, theyre huge. Some are

100 meters tall or more (Editors Note: Thats

over 328 feet in American). If you put all this

together, theres good reason to believe that

wind power might work in Minnesota, and

it might actually make a substantial energy-

generating dent. Wind power might be cost

effective in some areas of the country, and

Minnesota and its Minnesotans are in a good

position to know if thats the case.

I began by searching the internet for

information on Minnesota and its windmills.

I found what I expected, a good amount of

    useless propaganda about global warming

and how capitalism is ruining the earth, but

nothing that I could use, some actual facts

and figures that show wind power to be

generating electricity at a lower rate than

fossil fuels when subsidies are removed from

the equation. (Feel free to email them to me

if you have them.) My mother started asking

people if they had noticed a difference in their

electric bills. This is genius, by the way. After

all, thats what we really care about, right. At

the end of the day, did my bill go down? She

got mostly blank stares. People had seen the

windmills, but had never connected the idea

to electricity prices. They hadnt noticed any

drop, but they hadnt been looking either.

Ultimately, I decided that its probably

too early to know for sure. This is primarily

because subsidies for wind power are just

now going away. There is some push to keep

them -- be sure to tell your congressperson no.

If wind is a good idea, it should probably

be able to make money without taxpayers

paying them for anything other than

electricity, and if your congressman says that

the oil companies get subsidies too, call him a

liar, and tell him to stop calling letting people

keep their profits, subsidies. Once wind is

forced to work in the market, we wont even

need numbers telling us how well it works. If

it doesnt work, it will go away.

While Im usually the guy who pooh-

poohs this sort of thing, I should point out

that windmills in Minnesota are ugly and

more than a little disturbing. Put 50 to 100

of these things along the highway in some

farmland and it can make you feel small. The

wide open spaces of the plain states do this

anyway, but with the windmills added in, the

effect is amplified. It looks a little like The Jolly

Green Giant a resident of Blue Earth, MN

is growing pinwheels to sell to Godzilla

and Mothra. Worse, they all have a single,

slow-blinking, red light on the turbine. I cant

decide what that looks like at night, but when

I dove by them in the dark, I always had

trouble sleeping that night. A last concern

I have is that these windmills may only be

there because someone is paying to have

them built. If this is the case, Minnesota can

look forward to having hundreds of windmills

slowly rotting away on farmland across the

state, and that would really be a shame.

The second thing I noted about Minnesota

is that they seem to have perfected the idea

of the municipal campground. This is by no

means an endorsement of government, but I

have to admit these local guys seem to have

their **** together. In much of Minnesota, it

appears that individual towns have their own

campgrounds. I would have expected that to

be an absolute disaster, but it wasnt. In fact,

most of the campgrounds looked like they

were being run like successful businesses.

    Obviously, the downside to this

activity is that it displaces possible private

business, and could be run poorly and using

government power to prevent competition or

to pad pockets, and that might be happening,

though I couldnt tell from my trip. In addition,

many of these towns had so little to offer in

the way of commerce, that it seems unlikely

that they would be stepping on any toes.

The benefits of a municipal campground

are the very amenities they offer to their

customers. Does your town want a swimming

pool? Build one for the campground. The

fees will pay for it over time and it can

be shared with the town. I saw the same

thing applied to disc golf courses, baseball

diamonds, pavilions used as meeting places,

boat accesses, beaches, batting cages, trails,

ponds and any number of other things that

a campground can use and that the town

might also use. Add to this the fact that the

campground brings commerce to the town

above and beyond simple camping fees,

and you have an idea that I think should be

considered everywhere. Heck, Im going to

try to get my town to build one.

I hope this offers some solace to those

who say I never have anything nice to say

about government. They are, for the most

part, right. I am an anarchist after all.

But, occasionally, very occasionally, I find

something that I find worthy of praise done

by government. This probably isnt what they

were looking for, but hey, its something.
