moorakyne Avenue is one of Malvern’s most elegant – and pricey – streets. Tree-lined and tranquil,
most of the houses date from the 1930s, when the great Victorian property
Moorakyne and its land were subdivided.Moorakyne Avenue was created with a bend in the
road to allow for the retention of the mansion, but it was bulldozed in 1936.
No.11 was designed by Arnaud Wright in 1934 in an old-English style.
Beautifully renovated and updated, the house is ideal for a modern family. But it still retains its elegance and grace from another era.
In the front garden, moss fills the spaces between the crazy pavers. Out the back, its stately oak and elm trees give it the atmosphere of an English property, though it still has that Australian classic – an in-ground swimming pool.
This house impresses, from the wrought-iron finished entry door to the porch to the large, lush back garden.
From the wide entry hall sliding glass doors with bevelled-edged glass panels open into the formal sitting room where the brick-trimmed open fireplace is suitably impressive on a cold winter’s day.
The proportions of the rooms as well as their details
contribute to this property’s appeal: details such as the white-painted panelling on the walls that extends above head height and finishes with a notched trim.
The sitting room is divided from the dining room by sliding glass doors. All the windows have Georgian-style small panes and the dining room opens to an elevated balcony that overlooks the front garden. In summer everyone gravitates to this balcony from the dinner table, says the vendor.
Interiors are predominantly taupe and white with white-painted mantelpieces and door surrounds. The kitchen, while renovated to the highest standard, fits the house perfectly so that dark-stained timber benches contrast with the white cabinets below them. A lot of thought has gone into the kitchen cabinets as they echo the square panelling of the entry hall. Two stainless steel ovens in the bench along the window cater for modern family requirements, while the meals area at the end of the kitchen overlooks the back garden and swimming pool.
If you are looking for a massive family room, you won’t find one here. What you get is a spacious room just off the kitchen that complements the house, provides plenty of living space but is not so large that the cook has to use a megaphone to call people to dinner. An original fireplace has the brick surround and plaster moulding that was common in this era – and would be very hard to replicate.
