The Parsha describes how Yosef Hatzadik was framed and wrongfully sentenced to prison. After 10 years in prison Yosef saw an opportunity to possibly get out. One of Pharaoh’s officers who was jailed was about to be released, and Yosef had just helped him out big-time. So Yosef asked him to return the favor by remembering him and getting him out. But the Torah tells us that the officer completely forgot about Yosef. Rashi (40:23) cites the Midrash as follows: “He forgot him”…Because Yosef depended on him to remember him, he was compelled to be imprisoned for two [more] years, as it is said: “Praised is the man who placed his trust in Hashem and did not turn to the conceited ( יםִ בָ הְ ר”) (Psalms 40:5). He should not have relied on Egyptians, who are called בַ הַ ר, conceited. The questions are obvious; What’s wrong with asking for help? Should Yosef have dismissed the opportunity? What about hishtadlus? Why was he punished for this? The great Chazon Ish wrote a sefer called Emuna u’Bitachon in which he addresses this issue (2:6) and explains as follows; "Yosef knew that his salvation was not dependent on any exertion on his part, and that everything comes from Hashem, but since human beings are obligated to act, and not to depend on miracles, Yosef obligated himself to make use of the opportunity and to enlist the help of the Chief Butler. But it is not the nature of [arrogant] people of that rank to remember and to do favors, and therefore this act of Yosef's was not appropriate - since it was an act of desperation. A desperate person does anything he can, even futile actions - which someone who trusts in Hashem should not do; he is not obligated to take such [desperate] actions. This act of Yosef's…since it was not obligatory, it was forbidden. Our Sages here are referring to Yosef's action, not to the extent of his trait of trust. Yosef knew that no human being could help him - only Hashem. But his feeling of obligation to ask the Chief Butler, according to the tradition of our Sages, came from a mistake in judgment; he should not have turned to arrogant (and therefore untrustworthy) sources of help" (Translated by Y. Goldstein, Published by Am Asefer) So in other words, asking the Egyptian officer for help is not reasonable hishtadlus, because it would be, lehavdil, like President Trump asking Democratic Nancy Pelosi (!) to help him avoid impeachment, or a Jew driving into Gaza and asking one of the locals to help him change a flat tire – these are not hishtadlus, they are last resort acts of desperation! A man of great faith such as Yosef, who knew that Hashem is in total control, should never have resorted to desperation. We are permitted and obligated to engage in hishtadlus - reasonable acts – but not in acts of desperation, for our faith in Hashem must express that in fact we are never desperate.

Dark Matters Health and Healing in the Parsha Daniel Wasserman, DOM

"In the beginning... the earth was empty... and 'darkness' was upon the face of the deep." (Bereishis 1:1-2)

"The word 'darkness' refers to the Greek exile who darkened the eyes of Israel..." (Bereishis Rabbah 2:4)

"And, Hashem said, "Let there be light!" (Bereishis 1:3) _________________________________________________________

Dr. Vera Rubin might not be a household name, but maybe she should be. After all, how many people can say that they proved the existence of dark matter, thereby opening up a new field of astrophysics and astronomy? As we will see, her groundbreaking research fits right into Chanukah's theme! Vera Rubin was born in 1928 to penniless Jewish parents who immigrated, like so many of our bubbes and zeides, from Europe. Before she even knew that there was a field of astronomy, she was captivated by the stars and their paths, staying up late at night to observe them. At 10 years old, she built a crude telescope out of cardboard and began tracking meteors. Dr. Rubin literally blazed new trails by becoming a groundbreaking female astrophysicist. However, being one of the first women in the field, university was an uphill battle. She was denied acceptance to Princeton because of her gender. (It would be another 27 years until a woman was allowed into their graduate program.) Instead she earned her Ph.D. from Georgetown University, already a mother of two. Her accomplishments in the field of astronomy are too numerous to list, and quite frankly, I don't understand most of the terminology...intergalactic planes, quasars, anisotropy in the expansion of the universe, gravitational lensing, and galaxy mergers. A summary of her research in layperson's terms can be found in her book, Bright Galaxies, Dark Matters. However, her main contribution was to substantiate the existence of dark matter. After observing 1000's of galaxies, she recognized an inconsistency in their distribution and movement that contradicted all of the existing theories. This became known as the Galaxy Rotation Problem and 'dark matter' was the hidden influencing factor. It turns out that the vast majority of the cosmos is occupied by 'dark matter' and its cousin 'dark energy'. The data she discovered was immensely controversial, and after fighting (despite being pregnant at the time) to be allowed to present her work at the American Astronomical Society, she was summarily rejected and ridiculed. It took decades, but eventually her theory was universally accepted. The New York Times best described her legacy when it says that she "ushered in a Copernican-scale change in the cosmological theory". So what is dark matter? The first thing to know is that the description 'dark' has nothing to do with a lack of light, but rather is referring to its hidden, imperceptible nature. By definition, 'dark matter' is a force that is not measurable, yet fills the universe and determines much of what goes on in our perceived reality. Wait a quantum clock's nanosecond! (1) Beyond measurement, (2) A force occupying the universe, (3) Determining our reality...This concept is sounding extremely familiar. We've been proclaiming Hashem's providence for 3500 years. And, much like Dr. Rubin, our efforts have also often been met with disbelief and ridicule. By fighting to have the concept of 'dark matter' accepted into mainstream scientific research circles, Vera Rubin helped bridge the illusory gap between science and Torah. Excuse the overt Chanukah reference, but she revealed a little more of the Hand that spins the cosmic dreidel. Lo and behold, Vera Rubin's 'light was extinguished' on the first night of Chanukah, three years ago. Dark matter as a possible cover up, or at least a wonderful analogy, for Hashem's providence aligns with a paradigm-shifting insight from the Kedushas Levi, the Berdichever Rav. In his discussion regarding the plague of Darkness, he zooms in on the verse that states, "The darkness was tangible" - "vayameish choshech" (Shemos 10:21). The Hebrew word translated as "tangible" can also mean "to remove". But, of course, that usage wouldn't make sense in this context, as the verse would then read, "The darkness was removed." After all, Hashem is bringing darkness, not 'removing' darkness...right?!? To demonstrate how removing 'darkness' can paradoxically result in darkness, he first lays down a cosmological synopsis. Before creation, only Hashem's infinite light existed. Due to its all-consuming, intense brightness, nothing else could exist without completely being nullified. In order for the world to be created, a series of veils and concealments had to be put into place to hide this light. This is termed "choshech", darkness. The miniscule amount of light that filters through is tolerated and compatible with our world. Hashem 'removing' darkness during the plague means that he removed some of those veils, thereby, allowing more of this original light to shine into the world. But, like staring into the sun, too much light is blinding, which is what the Egyptians suffered. B'nei Yisroel, however, were ready for this light, since Torah and mitzvos are like sunglasses on a sunny day, allowing the rays of the sun to be enjoyed. This is what the Gemara is inferring when it says that, "In the future, there won't be any Gehinom. Rather, Hashem will take the sun out of its sheath. Tzadikim will be cured by it, while Resha'im (evil ones) will be judged by it." (Nedarim 8a) The Talmud tells us that Adam HaRishon experienced the original light of creation for 36 hours before it was hidden away. (Yerushalmi, Brachos 8:5) The Bn'ei Yisaschar tells us that we can catch a glimmer of this light through the 36 candles of Chanukah, as well as through learning the 36 tractates of the Talmud...and Torah and Mitzvos, in general, since "Ner Mitzvah v'Torah Ohr" - "the mitzvah is a candle and the Torah is a lamp". (Mishlei 6:23) May we all have an enlightening Chanukah!
