• Conclusion
Aikan® is a proprietary dry AD and compost Technology developed by the Solum Group
• Solum Group established in 1986 by Christian B. S. Christensen
• 250,000 tons of Biomass per year
• Employees: 40
• Since 2003 Solum has been operator of our Aikan facilities.
• In 2009, Solum Gruppen was awarded the Danish Liberal Party Climate and Environment Award, which was presented by the former Danish Prime Minister
• Aikan Technology aproved by Technical Comitee in Malaysia 2012.
Solum Group handles various waste streams and produces valuable primary products
Waste turned into :
Energy
Growth Media
Fertilizers
Other recyclables
Dry AD can help to make value out of waste that has an organic fraction !
Dry AD can be used for Municipal Solid Waste … Wet AD cannot
• Dry AD
– Robust towards impurities.
– Can handle different and fast shifting waste streams.
– Waste is not being moved during the process, avoiding risks for blockages of pumps, moving parts etc.
– Inhibition of biogas biology is avoided due to batch processing
• Wet AD
− Waste must be made into a pulp
− The pulp must be pumped into a reactor tank
− Impurities in MSW clog pumps and filters
− Wet AD process is sensible to inhibitation
Dry AD can be used for Municipal Solid Waste … Wet AD cannot
Technical Aspect:
Wet AD in principle
The performance of an Aikan ® Dry AD and Composting system relies on the 3 steps:
• Hydrolysis:
• Methane production:
• Composting:
Commercial Market Position - IP development
Unique 3-step integrated HSAD and IVC process Solid waste remains untouched inside the process module during methanation and composting
Patent 1 issued 2012 in US.
Patent 1 issued 2013 in US.
The Aikan brand is registered ® in EU and Thailand
Note (1): HSAD = High Solids Anaerobic Digestion. IVC = In Vessel Composting
Aikan Technology has the largest flexibility of all Dry AD systems on the market.
• Aikan is flexible
– Clean/pure organic waste => high quality compost
– Less clean waste => energy is extracted twice, Biogas is produced from organic fraction and the combustion value of the residues is increased during the proces, making the materials much more attractive for incineration and RDF
– Pre treatment for land filling for low quality input material
• Reduce volume of waste for land filling
• Reduce need for landfill gas collection
• Reduce leachate generation
• Reduce settling of landfill
• Substitute soil for daily cover
Aikan® Technology: A unique two phase AD and composting system
Organic fractions are first digested anaerobically
Waste mass is watered and methane-producing
bacteria are conveyed to the reactor tank for biogas
generation
… and then composted
Waste is untouched in the modules, and air is drawn
through it
Our secret is not
advanced technology -
it’s all biology!

Feedstock Options for Aikan Plant
The Aikan Dry AD Technology can use a very large variety of different organic feedstocks.
-Source-separated organic household waste -Municipal solid waste -Park and Garden Waste -Farm waste -Catering kitchen waste
-Grease trap waste -Energy crops -Screenings from other plants -Organic waste from agriculture -All kinds of horticultural waste -Food waste, including food wrapped in plastic -Organic residues from industrial food processing -(vegetables, oil, meat ++) -Dewatered sludge from sewage treatment plants.
Aikan Performance: Outputs from 1 ton (biodegradable organic waste – after removal of plastic)
• 350 kg of 0-10 mm compost
– Nutrient rich
– Fully sanitized
– Control and treatment of odours
– Stabilized organic matter
• Up to 60-100 m3 biogas (minimum 70 % methane)
• Biogas is flexible:
– Used for CHP - Equals approx 200 kWh electricity and 1400 MJ heat
– Transported in a pipe line to external power/heat plants
– Upgraded and used as fuel for cars
Aikan Performance
• High Methane Quality
Biogas produced at an Aikan plant contains on average 70 % methane. Depending on feedstock quality and other parameters, the day-to-day performance lies within 65 to 75 % percent methane.
Aikan Performance
1 ton of compost contains the following nutrients (example specification): -Nitrogen – total: 11.8 kg -Ammonium-nitrogen: 2.0 kg -Nitrate-nitrogen: 0.0 kg -Phosphorous – total: 6.5 kg -Potassium – total: 5.8 kg -Magnesium – total: 1.3 kg -Sulfur – total: 2.6 kg -Lv, conductivity value (10mS/cm): 18 -Lt, conductivity number (10mS/cm): 31 -pH-value, acidity: 7.2 -Rt, reactivity number: 7.3
Compost Quality
Compost delivered from an Aikan plant has a precisely defined quality and can be used as a substitute for conventional NPK fertilizer.
Aikan Dry AD can be pretreatment for incineration/ produce Refuse Derived Fuel
Incineration can be made more efficient and less costly through the use of Aikan Technology as pretreatment or to produce dry RDF:
• the Aikan process improves the calorific value of the organic matter and product residues / increases the heating value of the products for energy production
• The overall energy in the residues from the Aikan Dry AD System will be much higher than if the entire waste stream was incinerated. Reduced / removed need for support oil to maintain the incinerator temperature
• The CAPEX of the incinerator is considerably reduced as the Aikan process reduces the waste volume, without reducing the energy output from the incinerator
Aikan® stepwise - Simple and efficient
Waste Presorting
Biogas Compost
Recyclables RDF
Landfill
Easy handling of recyclables
• Presorting can be more or less sophisticated – Aikan works no matter which solution.
• Heat from biogas engine can be used for drying of recyclables and RDF – or drying of compost.
• Remaining impurities can, without health hazard, be sorted out after composting of the sanitized MSW
Technical Aspects
Land area requirements
(hectares)
20 modules; 4.4 hectare 35 modules; 6.2 hectare 50 modules; 11.0 hectare
Manpower requirements
- 20 to 40 during construction, and 5 to 10 new for operating a 20 module facility - many sorting persons can be employed in countries with cheap labor
Delivery time (design, build and commissioning)
Design 2 months Construction 8-12 months Commissioning 1 months
Planned Downtime
/Planned Maintenance schedule
No downtime. Waste can always be treated due to batch approach
Technical Aspect
Technical aspect: Robustness and no down time
• Strong machinery.
• Many standard components.
• Simple solutions.
• Treatment paradigm can be adapted to situation.
Technical Aspects: Flexibility via incremental expansion
Technical Aspects
Training is key. When supplying and commissioning a plant Solum secures the training of the staff. Plant manager will be trained in DK 2 weeks in advance. Local staff by PM and Solum at plant. One module is followed day by day.
Controlling and support. Run by PLC system. But people matter. Support by Solum via the Internet
Security high due to gas production in reactor tank
Our competitive advantage irt. Bekon, production of gas in the reactor tank instead of the modules.
